Day 16 - quarantine!

We spent the day lounging by the pool waiting anxiously for our negative COVID tests so we could sit at the bar. All day long, the beach bar, only a few meters away, tempted us, but alas, we could not oblige. We could even hear the dulcet tones of the blender mixing fruity drinks that were garnished by tropical flowers freshly picked from the adjacent foliage by the bartender. The sound of a blender working its cocktail magic is one of J’s favourite sounds, second only to the sound of ice clinking in a cocktail shaker. The hours ticked by with no test results. The assurance that ‘most’ results are received within 24 hours gave us scant comfort. Our expectation is that the exception to ‘most’ is results that are awaited on a Sunday. Despite multiple calls to the Front Desk who assured us they were “working on it”, night fell and with it, any hope of going to the bar or eating at the restaurant. With one last, longing glance at the bar, we trudged back to our room to order our quarantine dinner.

S’ suspicions from the night before proved sadly prescient. It was time for burgers. J got the beef burger but in silent protest, S got the fish burger. The real reason is we were concerned that two beef burgers made entirely differently would befuddle the room service staff. It has become very clear that with so many guests in quarantine, the kitchen staff is overwhelmed. They are forced to cover plates with clingwrap because they quickly run out of the normal room service food covers. However, we learned from last night’s mistake and made sure the wine was actually opened before it got here so we could drink it. And although they did not bring the ice bucket we ordered, a plastic bag of ice was brought to our room so we could refill our room’s ice bucket.

We did splurge, however, and get the spicy conch fritters (photo above). They were divine and the real star of the meal. We are saying a small prayer tonight that the COVID test results come in first thing. Otherwise, it is quarantine breakfast.

Despite all this and in case any of you who are still reading this blog think we are spoilt wankers, quarantine in the Bequia Beach Hotel, St Vincent and The Grenadines, beats the hell out of being locked down in a small, one bedroom flat in central London.
