I dreamed I got a helpful query rejection and they suggested the tone of my comp titles was wrong and Shrek would be a better comp. And then they gave me the names of agents that judge off pages only who wouldn’t be put off by my [apparently inadequate] query package.

Was remarkably sad to discover that the email was neither real nor useful.

I think a fundamental issue with ai recommended content (as opposed to recommendations and/or "ooh, that looks interesting" styles of discovery) lies in the fact that ai doesn't have the capacity to look beyond genre based recommendation.

Like, there's me scrolling around for something to watch on my streaming service of choice and I'm getting recommendations that I can trace back to the source — I know exactly what ai process led to recommending this thing to me and it's so painfully superficial.

"you might like [title] because you watched [fantasy series]" despite the fact that it doesn't have even a smidge of the same vibes, same style, same anything.

"you might like [title] because you watched star trek" Okay, but this sci-fi recommendation is... It's not very star trek-ish. There's no camp, there's no planet of the week, it's not nerds in space. It's a space action or a dystopian earth future or whatever.

It's worse in the "because you watched" sections where you can see that some of the recs are just "this was also popular"

And, to bring it all around to my life as an author (because when do I not?) It's one of the things I think is important if you can't fit it in your comp titles. My sci-fi novel (not fully announced yet) is like Star Trek TOS in the form of: it's focused on the dynamic of a small crew, there are episodic feels to the places we go and the people we meet, it has a cheerful and hopeful tone (balanced with edge-of-your-seat drama), there is a large alliance (but my protagonists don't technically work for them). It is not, however, "to go where no one has gone before" (yes, the updated gender inclusive one from a later series, get off my back), they only travel in the known systems. It is like Star Trek but it is also... Not.

Happy STS! What is some formative media that inspired your WIP and/or you?

Holy shit STS is still going??? How exciting!

The SOLE Project actually pulls some influence from the Maximum Ride novels. I read so many of those, and the “group of escaped lab kids” definitely stayed with me.

The LORE Series is… D&D I guess? Does that count as a media? I think it’s becoming one, if it wasn’t before.

That series is difficult to pin down, just because I’ve never successfully finished a first draft of the first book. And it’s presumptuous to say Tolkien, so.

LiaHT and that trilogy don’t have a lot of good comp titles? I hesitate to say Good Omens, just cuz that’s the only major angel/demon media out there. LiaHT doesn’t deal with an apocalypse, and it’s more “guardian angel assigned to someone” in its plot, too.

Honestly LiaHT just came from needing something to write as a queer person raised in the church.

And FLOAT is like if Maze Runner and Subnautica had a baby.

Hey can somebody help me with comp titles?? My brain is literally imploding trying to find some. I only read classic literature, and I’ve heard how bad it is to put classics as your comp titles if you’re not writing a remake of the story itself. But I have no other options here, I literally can’t tell what modern book or movie is similar to htkag. Literally nothing I read the description of is a perfect fit and I’m loosing my mind trying to figure it out

This is the original marker comp done for the opening shot of the main titles. These sorts of things are done for important shots (or any time you've got time to give something a bit more love). I remember that Art Director Rae McCarson also made a more purple version and a red/orange. I like that this one looked like a bit of a punk rock eyesore, so I went with that.

I always felt that the Grim & Evil titles were obnoxious in the WRONG way, and I wanted to make sure that the Billy & Mandy titles were CORRECTLY obnoxious.

It was a fun title sequence, with the exception of the fact that we had three days and zero extra dollars to put it together. Once we had the art assets, I took a weekend with my roommate La and girlfriend (all of whom worked on the show) and shot a bunch of extra stuff. We threw water balloons full of paint at poster board (which would later be used as mattes for the "splatter" transitions. We filmed smoke swirling in a tube and that can be seen swirling around the edges of the whole sequence. We did dumb little drawings of sharp-toothed Billys and Mandys. Many of those made it in as film scratches or pops. Most of it (like the infamous names on the tombstones) is really hard to see in SD.

Nice we had all of the stuff, editor Bobby Gibis and I spent a couple of days mashing it all together with the music.

My biggest regret is that we weren't given the time or budget for any actual animation, as I'd really wanted Billy & Mandy's sketelons to drop down followed by organs and skin as in the pilot. Instead we just had to use "electricity magic". Still, considering the resources we had... I'm pretty proud of what we were able to accomplish.

one of my favorite scenes in kinnporsche ep10 at the 42:10 mark when the Big Mafia Meeting is happening and Tankhun is like "where that ho cousin of ours Vegas at?" and Gun is sitting there with his Freddie from Scooby Doo ascot like "what's a vegas? anyway" and motions to his minions to reveal Ken's whole ass busted head in a box like didn't even try cleaning it up, or even cutting it at an even angle shit was titled and he was like "surprise! you're traitors head! I'm so cool hehehe" like opened that box up like a birthday cake you didn't order and Tankhun started gagging and waving his hands about like "arm! arm! get the Febreze please! oh god we are NEVER gonna get that out the table the fuck" and Kinn is having like his 4th internal mental breakdown of the week and his eyes are just screaming hello darkness my old friend while Korn looks on like, "what a basic bitch couldn't even cut a head straight shits titled af wait till I tell Namphueng about this later hehehe" and all the other bodyguards in the room are like, damn if this job didn't have dental man and Gun is all "he was selling our information!" and Tankhun doesn't buy that shit for a SECOND b/c he's the only bitch in the house with brain cells who's also not an evil flowers in the attic mofo wanna be bitch and Gun is like "I have never done anything wrong in my LIFE" and Korn steps in and is like, "I have gaslight gatekeep girlboss soup to make for my beautiful gay sons boyfriend later I don't have time for this" all while Ken's head is just chilling there at a 45 degree angle on the table in a room full of gucci suits
