certain movies that do not exist reminded me that i started reading house of leaves in like 2017 and still hadn’t finished it SO i finished it last night after like 5 years and I have many a thought

FIRST OF ALL good to know that it takes me nearly half a decade to finish a 700 page book. and this one has some pretty minimal pages so a normal 700 page book would probably take me 7. i am slow reader <:3c i havent looked SUPER far into all the little details and connections nor have i checked out much of the external stuff, but im satisfied rn with just having read it~ someday i might check out more

SECOND OF ALL i think i loved it. i think i loved it. i adored the navidson parts obviously and the various appendices were fine but many portions of johnny Really tested me LOL

PARTICULARLY at this one part in the middle where he was getting in contact with a bunch of sources and like translators and stuff for the manuscript and then he kept having sex with like every single woman within 3 sentences of meeting them LIKE okay. im biased. i cant take 99% of written sex scenes seriously. its a me problem. i think every word for cock and pussy is too funny. BUT THEN at one point he and this one woman were going at it after talking for like 1 minute and it was written so comically (he like. nutted so hard he ascended) that it started tipping me off to how unreliable of a narrator he was LOL so then i was less annoyed at his parts again. im of the opinion that like some of the sex scenes are likely real and some arent, like kyrie was probably real but the lady that made him nut in an arc shape was probably in his imagination, if that makes sense? thats just my own opinion though, for some people his sexcapades may have been realistic (I hear lots of people say hes a handsome young man? sorry he cant be that handsome) but in my circles of art analysis academia, like. nobody has sex. spending too much time analyzing paintings and not enough time analyzing bitches 😔. if that makes sense. i hear the environmental science faculty has some buckwild stuff going on tho ANYWAY sex rant over. EDIT13.06.23: NEVERMIND I NOW THINK THE COMICALLY IMMEDIATE SEX SCENES ARE HILARIOUS and also very thematically and narratively interesting. i understand now. i understand now. i was getting annoyed in the moment and i still do have trouble reading any written sex scene ever without laughing (my own problem) but i understand now

i also do find it interesting how many people find it to be a bit of a satire of academia, and i think Sort Of Maybe, but honestly i think its not annoying ENOUGH to be a Really Good satire LOL okay maybe this is cause i read papers analyzing media For Fun but like it was too fun to read to be a satire LIKE i kept forgetting that i wasnt just reading a normal essay until i out of habit reached for my phone to google a source only to remember that like a bunch of the sources are made up hfKJDSKDS i think i might have been spoiled tho, in highschool i read this book called Swann by carol shields that was like the most painful 400 pages ive ever read followed by the most pointed 100 pages of academic satire ive ever read using that 400 pages as setup. so now i think academic satire needs to hurt a little orz still fine tho i think im just picky

there was one other thing with the book that i was struggling a little with, and i think it was the books’ use of sexual assault? I’m not sure, i did read this book over the course of like 5 years so maybe i missed some nuances but because of the like 12 layers deep unreliable narrators it can be a little difficult to tell how much of anything is from the characters being flawed or the book being the debut novel from a writer in the 2000s (therefore likely not being perfect) (sorry if im not making any sense, I may be able to sorta articulate my thoughts okay sometimes but that doesnt make me a good writer LOL) like sometimes the way sexual assault and rape was brought up felt like it was missing something? like almost like the gravity of the situation hasnt been considered? The story’s writing of its female cast also was a bit difficult to grasp in general, i think most of it was intentional framing of johnny and zampano as having a lot of misogynistic (and near the end in johnnys case, genuinely violent and vile) mindsets as the plot seems largely sympathetic towards its female characters, but sometimes it almost feels like the narrative is a little distant towards them? or that might just be zampano again SHIT theres so many narrators in this book and you cant rely on a single one LOL

despite my complaints i think its like 95% great and I think i adored it tho LIKE OKAY

the baby story

the cyanosis baby i think really was the core of the story for me near the end. i think it really connected it all for me. i think it meant a lot to me at least. ive seen a couple theories similar to this around so im glad its not just me, but the concept that that baby is johnny and navidson and everything - ouugh magnifique

NOT in like a “it was all just a story the mother was telling her dying son for three days before his passing” way but in like. a shrodingers cat sorta way? dont talk to me about abstract complex and up to interpretation type stories like this BECAUSE if you like clear answers you will be So Annoyed with me HJKDSDHJRds sorry qwq ITS JUST im a visual novel fan and (especially since beating never7 (one of my favourite things on earth) speaking of shrodinger) i tend to think of time looping and winding and dimension hopping stories as sort of nebulously existing all at once, not in a clear and concise multiverse manner but in a very squishy manner, the true story will not exist until you turn the page/press the advance text button, and the true story will be reversed and changed depending on if you go back a page/reload an old save and go to a different part. all the existences are real all at once and none are, and there may be a split second where one is more real than the others, but its usually not that easy. if that makes sense

anyway the book in the end did have this really sort of beautiful theme of “cradling” (the cyanosis baby story, karen holding navidson, etc) which i think really does bring it back into a love story vs a horror story like the author says. i think i really loved it. the ways the explorations into the house were written (and i guess the best term for it would be “formatted”, or maybe “arranged”) was SO good and im like enamored with karen and pelafinas respective importance as sorts of “cores” of the stories (MANY THOUGHTS HEAD FULL)

now.... after five years.....i can finally....start a new book

can i please hear your thoughts about franema. blease. i know they have something going on between them

oh yes yes.... franema happy to talk about it. for starters just everything about how ema behaves herself in aa4 makes me believe that would be some excellent yuri because bitch4bitch femslash is always so important.

in general though i think they're two people whose lives are very centered around their work (as much of the main ace attorney cast is) but they center their work extremely differently in a way i think would cause the other person to question a lot about their own perspective. I think a situation where two characters can really ruffle each others feathers just by existing in proximity has a lot of good ship fodder.

i think in many ways franziska is what ema wanted to be. she's a child prodigy, competent and excelling in her field and earning respect from a very young age. meanwhile when she's several years older than fran was passing the bar ema is still just a high school student just dipping her nose into forensic science for the first time. by the time she's in her mid 20s ema still isn't at the level of career success fran reached in her teen years, being stuck as a detective after failures to pass the forensics exams. and i think it's really worth paying attention to the fact that Detective was specifically the job that lead to her sister's life turning to shit, so i think the longer and longer she stays trapped in that position the more she's gonna start feeling like the walls of her life are closing in on her. i know we don't know where fran is at career wise during this point in the timeline but my personal headcanon is that she ends up doing a lot of work with interprol and primarily specializing in prosecuting cases that take place across various countries' jurisdictions, and has had good success doing so.

Then on the flipside I think Fran see's ema's fully self-motivated passion for forensics as something enviable and admirable. Fran is i think someone who has spent her entire life running through a treadmill of carrots and sticks that dictated what her life was going to be like since she was born. Obviously prosecuting is the family trade and she was started extremely young, then pitted against someone much older for the majority of her childhood. I think the ebb and flow of validation or disinterest from her peers and family was such an overwhelming motivator that she never had the chance to even consider whether or not there's anything she's passionate about. As an adult, i think she does come to find an honest passion in her career but it's nothing like what ema has, it can't be decoupled from external validation, and that's something she's come to understand as a bit of a weakness.

Then interpersonally i feel like since ema is much more personable and socially adjusted than fran, i could feel that being something she instinctively kind of leverages against fran to try and level their playing field. like, okay, franziska may be this bigshot famous prosecutor (just like edgeworth, who ema wants sooo bad to impress) but ema can find ways to embarrass, frustrate, or otherwise fluster her in social settings so that's totally the same as being intellectual equals right. right. right. (<- thoughts of a girl who is definitely being normal about the situation). but i feel like fran could kind of learn to be grateful for the lack of deference ema treats her with and it could be a real first step to them actually getting to know each other better.

i feel like they'd have a lot of similar opinions on the broader aspects of life. i think they'd both be fine with a more casual relationship that involves a lot of traveling for work and isn't particularly romantic by a lot of people's standards. and i think it would be fun for them to fuck each other. overall it just works imo. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

It’s been a week since you found that crumpled note under your pillow. You could tell instantly by the terrible, yet somewhat cute, handwriting that it was Königs penmanship.

Will you go to the mall with me on Saturday to buy me civvy clothes?

The sound of your blood rushes to your ears. Is this him asking you on a date? Or was this just an invitation because he was to nervous to go on his own? Your heart flutters at the thought of walking around the mall with König by your side. You fold the note and tuck it safely into your breast pocket, smiling to yourself.

Saturday seems to take eons. You’re mind wanders during every meeting and debrief. The only thing in your mind during every moment of every day is your date with König. When Saturday finally rolls around you can’t get to the parking lot fast enough to meet him. You see him far before he sees you, and you’re surprised that he isn’t in his mask. Instead opting for a black baseball cap and a surgical mask, which with the ongoing pandemic made it look normal. His clothes on the other hand look liked they had been picked out of the trash from a Goodwill. His cargo pants were much too large and his black t-shirt was way too small, but it did show off his muscles.

“Hey big guy! You ready?” You shout to him across the parking lot. The sound of your voice puts him at ease almost immediately. His eyes light up and he rushes over to you. He’s different with you, softer, which you would never expect from a 6’9” German man. “You all ready to go?” He asks with such excitement he can barely contain himself. The entire ride to the mall you and König don’t stop talking, laughing and singing terribly to the songs on the radio.

But the moment you two step out of the car he freezes, car door still open. You can see the terror in his face as he sees the people lingering outside the mall. You rush over to the other side and put an arm on his bicep, “hey hey. It’s ok. I’m right here” you whisper as you look into his eyes. “It’s gonna be ok, I promise.” You grab onto his hand and that finally softens him. He comes back to you and to earth. “Ok. I believe you” he murmurs, looking back into your eyes and squeezes your hand.

As the two of you walk through the sliding glass doors into the noisy mall you can feel Königs grip tighten on yours. People begin to turn and see this hulking giant of a man and whisper to each other. You know König has some pretty severe anxiety, “hey. Anytime you need to leave we can leave” you say. He simply shakes his head, “No. I want to do this. With you” he whispers, eyes sinking to the floor. You cup his chin and raise his eyes back to yours “I want to do this with you too” you smile, “how about this, anytime you feel anxious you squeeze my hand and we’ll stop whatever it is we’re doing and I’ll tell you a joke?” “I don’t want to hurt you” he replies, gesturing at how his hand dwarfs yours. “Dont worry about it big guy, I can handle it”

You make your way through the stores, laughing at the outfits he tries to pick out for himself. König may be one of the best soldiers out there but he has the fashion sense of a dead snail. You help him choose some basic clothes, jeans, T-shirts that actually fit, and a new pair of sneakers. Surprisingly, he only squeezes your hand a few times the whole time you’re in the mall with him. You’re so proud. Once your shopping trip is over you take him to the food court to treat him to a soft pretzel and some boba.

As he bites into the pretzel his face twists into disgust. “This is your idea of a pretzel?” He mutters, spitting it out into a napkin. You can help but burst out laughing at the look of horror on his face. “Mother would be so dissapointed in this… abomination”. “Oh I am so sorry our food does not live up to your expectations my King” you retort. He laughs. A big hearty laugh you only hear when you’re alone, never ever in public. He takes a sip of the boba tea, fully expecting to hate it, but it takes him by surprise how much he loves it. “We should get this back on base” he says inbetween sips. “Indeed” you agree, seeing him so happy and worry free stirs something inside you. You want him to feel like this every day, all day. You promise yourself then and there that you would do everything possible to make sure that becomes reality. “I really had a great time today, König. Thank you for taking me” you declare.

“I would like to take you on more dates in the future” he responds. Eyes full of hope that you will agree.

“Nothing in this world would make me happier.” You smile, taking his hand in both of yours.

anyway im not rewriting all of that so here's the tl;dr: i like kaiba, he's iconic for a reason, but my 🔥🔥🔥est kaiba take is just that honestly i dont think he's nearly as deep a character as people want him to be, and that's not a bad thing. He fulfills the role he has in DM's narrative fantastically well, and he has his veins of things that could be interesting to discuss, but after 25 years it feels like it's just nonstop hitting bedrock when it comes to kaiba 'analysis.' I feel like i see the same 3-4 kaiba meta posts every other week (and i do sometimes wish that level of love and dedication to character analysis got extended to. any other yugioh character. i feel similarly about atem too tbh dfghd)

like with kaiba, it feels like a massive chunk of his implied depth is things fans have willed into existence through the sheer power of I Want it To Be That Deep. and i dont even think there's anything wrong with that, it just doesn't interest me very much. i like my kaiba discussion where the elephant of "this character is in many ways defined by stagnant growth and if this is left unchecked it's going to get really fucking bad" is Very in the room. kaiba is at his best to me when he's doing digital duel links necromancy, when his interpersonal relationships beyond mokuba are under the microscope and revealed to be, uh, hanging by a thread or two!

also, just, with not being terribly interested in it all, at this point now five yugiohs in and fully out in the spinoff reeds, i gotta say, every other yugioh rival is a more engaging character to me on a narrative and symbolic level than i have ever personally found kaiba. i honestly think a lot of them are also, by their series' end, far kinder people than seto kaiba is. 🤷‍♀️ maybe in another world another life kaiba could have dueled a robotic embodiment of all his negative traits and been humbled to some degree by that. what a world to think of

Some birds bond only with other birds, some only with humans, and some with both. Sammy had shown interest in other birds at Earth Angel, and had even spent time in her enclosure with a few favorites, but she hadn't found a mate. I was beginning to think she would never bond with anyone but me. It made me sad.

I think finally being in a fulfilling marriage myself made me realize how much Sammy was missing. There are plenty of unhappy marriages in the world - as a psychologist I see more than most people do - and a bad marriage can tear two people down. A good marriage is different. It can make us stronger; the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Still, humans can survive happily with no permanent partner. It's in a parrot's nature to want a mate.

Then Sammy met Little Girl and everything changed.

Little Girl was a Moluccan cockatoo, and with her pink-tinged feathers and bright crest, she looked a lot like Sammy. Unlike Sammy, she still had most of her feathers. She had spent years in a garage, usually with the door down. In that unventilated space, most of Little Girl's days were dark and stifling. She didn't have people or birds to interact with.

Her owner came out to the garage occasionally to give Little Girl food or clean her cage, but most of the time she sat alone. She didn't even have a window to watch the outside world. She was truly in solitary confinement.

The neighbors heard Little Girl's cries, and they called the police. The police visited, but there was little they could do. There aren't laws protecting lonely parrots. The most they could do was cite the owner for the noise, and they didn't even do that.

The neighbors kept complaining, though, trying to get something done for the bird. Eventually, the owner called us. She was tired of dealing with the neighbors.

When we came to pick up Little Girl, the owner wasn't there to say goodbye. She said she was busy and left her son to open the garage for us. She'd said on the phone before we arranged the pickup: "If she wasn't so noisy I wouldn't have put her in there."

We took Little Girl out of the garage and drove her to our veterinarian. Once he cleared her for Serenity Park, it was time to find her a perch.

We decided to place Little Girl with Sammy. Sammy was never aggressive with Mango; she just wasn't crazy about him. Maybe a different bird would work. Sammy hadn't been interested in any males, so maybe it was time to test her with a female. I've observed several parrots through the years who, like some humans, prefer their own gender. Somehow, Matt and I both felt it was a good match.

We introduced the two birds slowly. First, we let them see each other for a while. Then, when they seemed comfortable, we put them on opposite ends of the enclosure. We let the birds take their time approaching one another. For Sammy and Little Girl, comfort seemed to come right away. Once we introduced them, they didn't have time for any of the other birds. The two groomed each other. They shared a perch. They seemed to talk together in a language that was their own. They were physically affectionate. Little Girl had suffered for a long time, but she was no longer alone.

Sammy was enthralled by Little Girl. She still got excited when I came to visit, and she still let me cuddle her, but she'd soon move back to Little Girl's side. Sammy had been the first bird I'd been close to and I missed our special interactions, but I was thrilled for both of them.

We had both found our mates. Everything was as it should be.

I think for me it's like - sure, I'd be sad if Lloyd won, because I love Antigone, I wanna talk about her, and I want others to know (or learn!) about her and love her like I do! But there's no real gain to winning a silly Tumblr poll other than a but of happiness. So the fact that the second Antigone pulled ahead everyone immediately went "oh, those shitty Greek mythology fans, they WOULD pull a cheat like this to get ahead, especially after how they've been treating Ninjago fans this week".

Because, like, I'm not gonna say there haven't been some jerk Antigone voters in the notes. But first of all - nearly all the 'mean' Antigone voters in the notes are saying things like "How are we losing to a Lego ninja show??" which, while not kind, isn't exactly worth the demonization to immediately assume we're obsessive shitheads who would get bots together OR SPEND MONEY (what classics tumblr user has money to spend on dumb stuff like this, are they real, how can I live like them, let me know blease) to freak out over a. a Tumblr poll. (I'm not talking abt the people who are saying watching a kid's show makes you immature or uncultured, that's silly and wrong.)

Second of all, for as many mean Antigone voters, there are JUST AS MANY Ninjago fans in the notes going "Wow, vote Lloyd to fuck over Greek mythology fans" (augh Antigone isn't even Greek mythology, stop conflating everything that's old and Greek with mythology. Actually, stop conflating everything that's Greek at all with ancient Greece and mythology, but that's a tangent-), "These pretentious shitheads deserve to lose", "Greek tragedy enjoyers are classist and no one even knows who Antigone is these days, vote Lloyd because they deserve to lose", that kind of thing. Like, nothing TERRIBLE, but it's wild to me the leaps in logic right over their hypocrisy. It's shitty to shit on someone's interests because it's media intended for a younger audience, and it's shitty to shit on someone's interests because its media written a long time ago. But now that thoodleoo and Friday Afternoon are swinging in all these Antigone voters (because surprise, just because a story is over two thousand years old and some of us had to read it in school doesn't mean no one likes it! People have always been people, regardless of their time period, and people have always written stories worth reading that people will care about! It scares me seeing so many of my generation reject classic works out of hand! There's a kneejerk reaction to call something old pretentious, dull, irrelevant, and/or problematic, without actually engaging and understanding why it has been so long-lasting, and it's also scary seeing my generation refuse to understand that they are not inherently better just because they are newer, humans have always been writing beautiful and meaningful works!!! It's just this - hypocrisy, I think, for me. A lot of these people have come to the conclusion that because they are fans of children's media they are being persecuted, but on Tumblr, that's really not true. Most of active Tumblr watches children's media and cartoons, and that's great! There's a lot of good shows out there for kids that have great stories and messages! But they refuse to see they're doing the exact same thing they're accusing us of doing - rejecting a work and a work's fans because of how they generalize the culture. IE, classics culture has to be petty, pretentious, and shitty. That's what's making me upset. I know we have a bad rep for a reason (behold, the scores of shitty cishet rich white men and what they do with classic asethetics and work, good lord) but the same can be said of shitty kid's cartoon fans (I will not go into that kind of person but you know what I mean). There's always going to be bad people who like good things! But equating all people who like what has been a revolutionary and culturally germane tragedy for two thousand years because it is personally relevant and important to them with snobbish jerks who hate you just because you like cartoons, and then deciding there can't possibly be enough of us to win so we have to be cheating... yeahhh i just feel like people are making a lot of assumptions which like. yeah that's what people do. but it's frustrating, and also honestly if you reject ancient literature out of hand you might miss out on stuff you'd like! which i mean is also true of just about any media, like i'm not really into kids' shows but also if i mocked and refused to watch any kids' show i would be worse off for it.

there definitely are some antigone voters being genuinely nasty (and particularly in the replies to the poll there are a couple people who really feel the need to belittle people) but i also feel like i've seen pretty nasty stuff from both sides and it's just like... well it would be nice if it weren't like that! And Also most of what i've seen has been pretty lighthearted/all in good fun. so i don't really get the point of acting like either side is 1. a monolith and 2. universally acting in bad faith

i do think it would be silly for antigone to lose in round three of a poll about who's the most tragic character but it's not that big a deal 😭 and also yeah like. who's paying for this. i'm a phd student and i have to pay rent i am not out here buying tumblr votes
