when the prayer comes on in the morning, i do the sign of the cross. i don't pretend to tie my shoes or sit down anymore. i have ceased my acts of defiance to a higher power, however, not because i have become a devotee.

but it was the way you closed your eyes, with your head bowed and your long fingers touching your forehead, then chest and shoulders made you feel like my god. i too bow, and touch my fingers to my forehead, chest, shoulders—not in servitude, but in love and devotion to you. i try to grasp the feeling that prayer should give one, yet all i have to do is think of you to feel faith. to be a person of love is to be a follower of the divine.
