La Violencia (Research I did for Encanto fic writers so you don't have to)
TW: Assassination and death
Long but necessary post
@yellowcry @miracles-and-butterflies @evostar (if you already knew about it, that's fine, but reblog so others can too.)
To put it simply;
During this time, an estimated 200,000 people lost their lives, with 112,000 of those deaths occurring between 1948 and 1950. Additionally, two million people were forcibly displaced from their homes, primarily to Venezuela.
The root of this conflict lies in the intense partisan rivalries between Colombia’s two traditional political parties: the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party. These tensions created a divide between liberals and conservatives, eventually leading to the partial collapse of the state and existing institutional structures. As violence escalated, economic motivations began to outweigh political ones, and armed bands took advantage of the chaos to commit robberies, assaults, and revenge against their neighbors.
More in depth;
La Violencia was a ten-year civil war in Colombia from 1948 to 1958, between the Colombian Conservative Party and the Colombian Liberal Party, fought mainly in the countryside.
Liberal hegemony continued through the 1930s and the World War II era, and Alfonso López Pumarejo was reelected in 1942; however, wartime conditions were not favourable to social change. In the elections of 1946, two Liberal candidates, Gabriel Turbay and Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, stood for election and thus split the Liberal vote. A Conservative, Mariano Ospina Pérez, took office.
Conservatives had been embittered by political sidelining and, since 1930, had suffered violent attacks at the hands of Liberal supporters. With the electoral victory of 1946 they instituted a series of crude reprisals against Liberals. It was the initiation of the period that was dubbed La Violencia. On April 9, 1948, Gaitán, leader of the left wing of the Liberal Party, was assassinated in broad daylight in downtown Bogotá. The resulting riot and property damage (estimated at $570 million throughout the country) came to be called the bogotazo.
La Violencia originated in an intense political feud between Liberals and Conservatives and had little to do with class conflict, foreign ideologies, or other matters outside Colombia.  Authoritative sources estimate that more than 200,000 persons lost their lives in the period between 1946 and 1964.
The most spectacular aspect of the violence, however, was the extreme cruelty perpetrated on the victims, which has been a topic of continuing study for Colombians. La Violencia intensified under the regime of Laureano Gómez (1950–53), who attempted to introduce a fascist state. His excesses brought his downfall by military coup—Colombia’s first in the 20th century. Gen. Gustavo Rojas Pinilla assumed the presidency in 1953 and, aided by his daughter, María Eugenia Rojas, began an effort to end La Violencia and to stimulate the economy.
Rojas was a populist leader who supported citizens’ demands for the redress of grievances against the elite. Support for Rojas began to collapse when it appeared that he would not be able to fulfill his promises, when he showed reluctance to give up power, and when the economy faltered as a result of a disastrous fall in coffee prices in 1957. He was driven from office that year by a military junta.
The arrangement for the National Front government—a coalition of Conservatives and Liberals—was made by Alberto Lleras Camargo, representing the Liberals, and Laureano Gómez, leader of the Conservative Party, in the Declaration of Sitges (1957).
The unique agreement provided for alternation of Conservatives and Liberals in the presidency, an equal sharing of ministerial and other government posts, and equal representation on all executive and legislative bodies. The agreement was to remain in force for 16 years—equivalent to four presidential terms, two each for Conservatives and Liberals. The question of what governmental structure would follow the National Front was left unsettled.
It had been contemplated that a Conservative would be the first to occupy the presidency in 1958. When the Conservative Party could not agree on a candidate, however, the National Front selected Lleras, who had previously served in that office for 12 months in 1945–46.
During Lleras’s tenure an agrarian reform law was brought into effect, national economic planning for development began, and Colombia became the showcase of the Alliance for Progress (a U.S. attempt to further economic development in Latin America). But severe economic difficulties caused by low coffee prices, domestic unemployment, and the apparent end of the effectiveness of import substitution were only partially offset by Alliance aid.
The Alliance increased Colombia’s economic dependence on the United States, which, to some Colombians, had serious disadvantages. By 1962 economic growth had come almost to a standstill.
The precarious state of the economy and the degree of social tension were revealed when only about half of those eligible to vote did so in the 1962 presidential elections, which brought Guillermo León Valencia, a Conservative, to the presidency.
During Valencia’s first year in office internal political pressures led to devaluation of the peso (Colombia’s currency), wage increases among unionized workers of some 40 percent, and the most rampant inflation since 1905. Extreme deflationary policies were applied in the next three years, raising the unemployment rates above 10 percent in the major cities and turning even more Colombians against the National Front.
Less than 40 percent of the electorate went to the polls in the 1964 congressional elections.
Marxist guerrilla groups began appearing in Colombia during Valencia’s presidency. The first was the National Liberation Army (Ejército de Liberación Nacional; ELN), which was created by a group of Colombian students who had studied in Cuba.
Founded in 1964, the ELN followed strategies espoused by Che Guevara. Another guerrilla group, which followed two years later, was the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia; FARC), which was more connected to Soviet-influenced communist movements. Much of FARC originated in the “resistance committees” that had appeared in Colombia during La Violencia.
Carlos Lleras Restrepo was the third National Front president (1966–70). He returned the economy to a sound footing, improved government planning for economic development, and pushed through political reforms essential to an orderly end to the Front (which seemed increasingly to constitute a monopoly of power by the Conservative-Liberal oligarchy).
Although the constitutional reform of 1968 stipulated that elections would become competitive again after 1974, the president was still required to give “adequate and equitable” representation to the second largest political party in his cabinet and in the filling of other bureaucratic posts.

What does this have to do with the madrigals?
Well, if you're planning on writing any madrigal (or all) outside of Encanto, La violencia is something you need to take into consideration. It's an important part of Colombia's culture and shouldn't be ignored.
(I just learned about it recently and in turn, need to rewrite some stuff. So I can only imagine that half of the Encanto fandom knows nothing about it)
What cities were safe you ask? I don't think there really was any.
Bogotá: As the capital of Colombia, Bogotá witnessed significant unrest during this period. Political factions clashed, leading to violence and instability.
Cali: Cali, located in the southwestern part of the country, also suffered from La Violencia. It was a hotspot for clashes between Liberal and Conservative supporters.
Medellín: Medellín, another major city, faced its share of violence. The conflict often played out in the streets, affecting civilians and communities.
Barranquilla: This coastal city experienced tensions between rival political groups, resulting in bloodshed and loss of life.
Cartagena: Cartagena, known for its historical significance, was not immune to the violence. The struggle between Liberals and Conservatives left scars on its urban landscape.
Cúcuta: Located near the border with Venezuela, Cúcuta also witnessed violence during La Violencia.
Palmira, Santa Marta, Soledad Atlántico, Armenia, Pereira, Neiva, Valledupar, Bucaramanga, Popayán, Villavicencio, and Soacha were other cities affected by the turmoil.
So, in either city, the madrigals would be exposed to this war if they chose to come out. Now, let's say Encanto is in the very center of Colombia (or at lease close to it) -
Tumblr media
(Right where the red dot is)
The closest area is Villavicencio, Puerto Lypez, and Bogota. All three cities that were affected by the war. And I'm not saying Villavicencio is THAT close to Encanto, probably a week trip at best, but still.
Why did I choose the center of Colombia?
Because I don't see it sitting anywhere else. And it's convenient fic wise. But you can do what you want.
Now I'm not saying the Madrigals won't experience fun in the new world. They most certainly will (culture and technology wise), but the war is really unavoidable for them.
That's all for now, but if you have anything to add or for me to correct, reblog or message me.

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — A bomb threat sent an anti-explosives unit scrambling into a bustling area of Ecuador’s tense capital Thursday while authorities in an eastern city reported a nightclub arson killed two people as the South American country staggers under a spike of violence blamed on drug gangs.
Police in the capital, Quito, said they evacuated people from the area surrounding the Playón de la Marín bus station when they were alerted about a backpack with an alleged explosive placed in a garbage can.
The backpack turned out to not have any explosives, authorities said, but it followed five similar incidents in the capital Wednesday with actual explosives. Those bombs — in two vehicles, at a pedestrian bridge and near a prison — caused minor damage but no deaths or injuries.
Meanwhile, authorities said unknown suspects set fire to a nightclub in the Amazon city of Coca, killing at least two people and injuring nine others. The blaze, which spread to 11 nearby stores, is under investigation, officials said.
Ecuador is in the grips of a crime wave tied to drug trafficking gangs. Ecuadoreans worry the violence will only escalate in a country where a presidential candidate was assassinated last year.
President Daniel Noboa, who earlier this week declared an emergency and a virtual war on the gangs by authorizing the military to act against them, said Thursday that Ecuador needs “tougher laws, honest judges” and the possibility of extraditing dangerous criminals in order to fight terrorism and organized crime.
“We are not going to let a group of terrorists stop the country,” Noboa said in a recorded message sent to media outlets in which he also presented the design of two new prisons. He said the corrections system has been “controlled by mafias” for decades and is in urgent need of new facilities.
Noboa said prisons will be built in two provinces and each will have super-, maximum- and high-security units and will be equipped with technology to block cellphone and satellite signals. He previously said the new prisons would be ready in 10 to 11 months.
Many people are staying at home and schools and stores have been shuttered as soldiers patrol the streets of Ecuador’s biggest cities.
Tensions heightened Tuesday when a group of men wielding explosives and guns invaded a television station’s live afternoon newscast in Guayaquil, the Pacific port city that has been the epicenter of a surge in violence that began roughly three years ago. Ecuadorians watched as the intruders threatened and assaulted employees at the station. No one was killed and 13 suspects were arrested, but the violent broadcast stunned much of the region.
Ecuadorian authorities attribute the country’s spike in violence to a power vacuum prompted by the killing in 2020 of Jorge Zambrano, alias “Rasquiña” or “JL,” the then-leader of the local Los Choneros gang. Members carry out contract killings, run extortion operations, move and sell drugs, and rule prisons.
Ecuador’s neighbors, Colombia and Peru, are the world’s largest cocaine producers. Los Choneros, one of the country’s most violent gangs, and similar groups linked to Mexican and Colombian cartels are fighting over drug-trafficking routes and control of territory, including in prisons, where more than 450 inmates have been slain since 2021.
A February 2021 riot among rival gang members at Ecuador’s most violent prison left at least 79 inmates dead. The following September, 116 inmates were killed in another gang battle at the same Litoral prison, with several of them beheaded.
The violence has spread from prisons to the streets, turning the once-peaceful Ecuador into one of the most violent countries in the region. Last year was Ecuador’s bloodiest on record, with more than 7,600 homicides, up from 4,600 in the prior year.
Gang members in prisons throughout the country have taken corrections personnel hostage since Sunday, when the current leader of Los Choneros vanished from prison.
On Thursday, inmates managed to increase to 178 the number of corrections personnel they are holding hostage, according to the prisons agency. A union that represents prison employees has asked officials to guarantee the “physical and psychological integrity” of the hostages.
Noboa, who took office in November, won a special presidential election with the promise of reducing the terrifying, drug-driven crime wave within 1 1/2 years in office. His anti-crime campaign proposals range from turning ships into floating jails to getting police more equipment.

Hotline miami is so cool to me from a literary and lore-based perspective because of how many different ways and levels on which you can interpret occurrences in the game. Is richard an angel of death through the series or something more innate to the human psyche? Were manny's levels even fucking real or were they all fantasies? If they were real, did he do them out of a sick sense of justice or was he targeting ongoing problems that were overshadowing his serial killings in hopes to bring his murderous persona more of the spotlight? WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED AT THE PHONE COMPANY BUILDING????? AND OH MY GOD THE PRISON RIOT LEVEL! Are the janitors organizing the riot? Is it to kill him off? Some other goal? Are they symbolic of the devs freeing richter from the violent life he's been forced into provided that he completes one final trial? If so, is that a parallel of the hanchman's "one last job" from earlier in the game? Is the level supposed to bring forth a depiction of animalistic amorality in richter slaying all in his path, both cop and crook, or is it him determinedly doing whatever he needs to do to escape before ultimately meeting his doom in *another* parallel to the henchman but with him being happy due to his actions being out of his own free will rather than the orders of another? I could ask so much more about richter ALONE but also is the New Russian Drug made of the same plant found all over hawaii during the russo-american war because they sure do have similar colors. If it *is* then does that make the hawaiian conflict and the russo-colombian drug wars another set of literary parallels? I absolutely *know* that the bodies being dissolved in acid in the sewer was there literarily to show the fans being in over their heads with their action hero fantasies they're trying to live out as opposed to the really fucked up and *real* violence that lies under their very feet but i am going to make an entire reblog to this about my theories regarding them and possible connections to an event in the first game and what those might mean. WHAT HAPPENED AT THE PHONE COMPANY AND WHY DID THE SON HAVE A FIRE AXE IN APOCALYPSE WHEN HE HAS A GUN IN DEATH WISH?!?!?!?! Was martin brown actually a fucked up person or was he just a method actor whose character was invading his psyche? Does tony actually have the same mask that jacket wore or is it from the guy that was tied to a chair in the booby-trapped room? If it isnt jacket's, is that a way to show how tony (like the rest of the fans) is merely following an idea he created in his head of who jacket was and why he did what he did instead of actually understanding him? WHICH APRIL 3RD DID RICHARD MEAN WHEN HE SAID THAT'S WHEN JACKET AND HIM MET? THE METRO? THE BOMBING OF SAN FRANCISCO? Is the use of the pig mask for martin, the first character you play as, meant to subtly show the shift in level design philosophy from the first game through its effect (more guns) therein? Is the whole "enemies frequently shoot you from offscreen" thing symbolic of how the odds are stacked against every character, foreshadowing of the ending, a spiteful jab at sequels, or a further extension of the theme of reality vs fantasy? If youre an english major or like literature, please please please play this series holy FUCK

Okay, I'll bite :D
What color is my aura?
😂 hi, @ato-the-bean! This has really taken on a life of its own! 😁 After much deliberation, and some Madeira this time, I am pleased to report that your aura is the color of Caño Cristales, or the River of Five Colors:
Tumblr media
This Colombian river, which is also sometimes referred to as a liquid rainbow, spends most of the year simply doing the ordinary yet indispensable work a river does for its ecosystem: carrying nutrients, fostering astonishing biodiversity, providing clean drinking water. But for four months of the year, this river is a riot of colors: red, yellow, orange, green, and blue, all courtesy of a simple plant that grows beneath the water’s surface.
This is a river, in other words, that knows its worth, and yet isn’t afraid to embrace whimsy, on its own terms, and in its own time. Like Caño Cristales, if there’s anything your aura reflects, it’s this: what a wondrous thing it is to know your place in the world, to have carved out a space or a home or a riverbed where you can make your mark on the world around you. And how much more incredible to keep something set aside that is just for you, with its own unexpected, buoyant beauty.

Whumpcember Day 14: Cornered
Yes this is a Gravity Falls fic no it has nothing to do with my usual fics and no I do not care because I rewatched the whole show and went down the rabbit hole of rereading half my bookmarked fanfics and I have *splays hand across chest dramatically like a lady in a 20th century drama about the Victorian era* emotions
Summary: angst b/n Stan and Ford post-Weirdmageddon. No ships, no actual malicious violence, but Stan has a very realistic flashback brought on by am amnesia episode.
Summary for those who haven't watched Gravity Falls: Stan and Ford are twin brothers who finally like each other again after ~40 years of angst. Stan suffered total amnesia recently and now has all of his memories back in canon, but it's fun to imagine that he has occasional lapses...and flashbacks.
@whumpcember
Stan was well and truly done for this time.
He’d thought that a dozen times before, sure, but all those times, he’d only escaped because of luck. In a random Colombian prison surrounded by members of the gang he recently betrayed, though? There was no luck here.
But Stan was determined to try anyway or at least fuck with those bastards up until his last breath, and so now, in the middle of a prison riot and with emergency lights flaring on and off in the halls, he ran as fast as he could through the maze of prison passageways, half-hoping he would find a place to hide and half-hoping that, in the more likely event that his pursuers caught up to him, he would’ve pissed them off royally. Judging by the angry shouts close behind, he already had.
His heart skipped a beat when he skidded around a corner and found locked doors ahead of him. The power outage that had given him the chance for this whole mess had somehow not affected these doors – they must be hooked up to an emergency generator. Stan ran up and tried to open them anyway, but sure enough, they were locked tight. He could pick it if he had the time, but…
Rico’s men rounded the corner and slowed their pace to advance, knowing that their prey was well and truly cornered.
Stan’s mind raced. Up until now, he’d thought he had accepted that they might want to kill him. But now, faced with the very real possibility, Stan desperately looked for an out. There had to be a weakness somewhere, there had to be – but then – but there wasn’t. The men grinned as his eyes widened in horror.
“No,” he whispered to himself. “Not like this…”
--Stan shot upright with a gasp and looked around in terror for the gang, because not being able to see where they were was even more terrifying than the sight of them creeping down the hallway. He clutched at his gut, half-sure that they had already gotten to him, because –
--because how else was he supposed to explain the fact that he was alone, in a comfortable bed, in a cabin room, wearing a sweater instead of a prison uniform?
Well, that was even more confusing. Heart racing, Stan slipped out of bed and froze when a floorboard creaked. But no one responded to the noise.
His head throbbed dully as he took in his surroundings. The room was…incredibly normal, and that’s what made it so strange. It held a dresser, various knickknacks, a box of magazines boasting pictures of fully-clothed women…a gentle, oddly soothing light was on on the bedstand, but the it was dark outside.
Stan raced to the window. Outside, it was pitch-black. Stan considered jumping, but his back protested at the mere thought. Since when did he have a bad back?
And why wasn’t he hurt aside from some random joint pains?
And how the hell did he get here?
Stan crept to the doorway and listened – nothing. No movement that he could detect. No cameras on the ceiling, either. There was a stairway leading down…Stan hesitated and then stole down, head still throbbing. He wobbled over the steps and nearly tripped several times, but he held on tight to the wall and then to the railing to keep himself from falling. The dim light didn’t help either, but at least it seemed to be growing brighter as he went forward…in fact, as he reached the bottom stair, he realized that most of the downstairs was fully lit…
He crept down a short hallway, still not sensing a sound. Only one door was open. Stan hoped that it would be an exit, but it turned out to lead to some sort of study instead. There was a large desk with piles upon piles of paper and books on it, as well as a lot of mugs, inside.
Stan quietly trod back, but, just as his toe crossed the threshold, a voice from behind the desk exclaimed, “Stanley! Wh-what are you doing up?”
Stan jumped and was about to flee when an older man with bushy hair and round glasses poked his head up from behind the teetering book piles. Stan’s jaw dropped, and the man suddenly looked rather sheepish. “I mean – er – I wasn’t staying up drinking coffee. Not at all. I don’t know where you get such ideas, Stan.”
“Who the fuck are you?”
The man’s sheepish smile fell. For some reason, Stan felt crushed at the sight of it, as if he had been the one to do something wrong. He didn’t like disappointing this guy, but why?
His head pounded with renewed vigor, and Stan swayed on his feet.
“Whoa, none of that,” the man said quickly, and he dashed forward, reaching an arm out. Stan backed away immediately.
“I said, who the fuck are you?!” He snarled, instinctively moving one arm up to defend his chest and the other to his pocket, which he only now realized was empty. Unarmed. “Get away!”
The other man stopped, surprisingly, and spread out his open palms in an apparent attempt to show Stan that he meant no harm. Yeah, right. I wake up in a weird house and this creep acts like it’s normal. No thank you. There’s something odd about the man’s hands, but Stan doesn’t let himself look away from his eyes for long enough to think about it.
“Easy, Stan. I think you’re having an amnesia attack again. It happens, Stan, but everything’s okay each time.”
“Amnesia? That’s a weird fuckin’ way to try and trick someone -- who are you working for? Tell me your name, you fucking freak!” Stan shouted.
The man took a half step back as if physically hurt, and again, that wounded expression made Stan feel wrong. This in turn only frustrated him more – and scared him, if he had to admit it. He racked his brain again, trying to think of anything that would clue him in on how he wound up here, but there was nothing.
The stranger sighed and nodded to himself, seemingly shrugging off the hurt. “My name is Stanford. Stanford Pines. But you usually call me Ford.”
“I don’t – I –”
Ford. Stanford Pines. Stan’s head spun and the headache intensified. A horrible realization struck him: this guy, or whoever he was working for, must’ve drugged him! That was it, that was why Stan couldn’t remember and why his head hurt so bad!
Before the man could get any closer, Stan bolted.
He was halfway through the kitchen and just about to reach the door when the man – how did he catch up with me? He’s an old geezer! – grabbed him by the shoulder and pulled him back firmly, the strength in the action making Stan gape. “How –”
“You can’t go out there on your own. It’s dangerous,” said the man, still holding onto him. “Please, let’s sit down and talk this through. I can explain –”
Stan threw him off with a grunt, trying to ignore his throbbing head, and spotted a knife holder on the table. A weapon! He lunged for it before Ford – don’t think about that name, names hurt – before the man could stop him. Knowing that he couldn’t run away, Stan held up the knife in both hands and tried to look imposing. Fuck, why were his knees hurting so bad?? The old bastard was slowly walking forward and Stan kept pace going backwards until his foot bumped into the wall. Fuck. He was cornered.
And the man was unarmed. Was he dropped on the head when he was a baby? Why was he walking towards the much younger guy who was holding a knife, as if he could somehow tell that Stan didn’t really want to hurt him?
Wait, why don’t I want to hurt him again? He kidnapped me! Moses, Stan, were you Stockholm syndrome’d in your sleep?!
“Stanley –”
“I don’t wanna hurt you, old man, even if you’re a freak,” he said, panting. His heart was pounding; he could hear the blood rush in his ears. “Just – just let me get out of here, don’t try to catch me, alright? Hell, I can stop asking questions, I’ll get you money, drugs, anything –”
“Stanley,” the man said firmly, “please put the knife down. You’re shaking. I don’t want you to hurt yourself.”
"What'd you drug me with? What are you gonna do to me?" Stan shouted, his voice cracking. "Are you gonna -- are you gonna keep me here? Did Rico sell me to you or some fucked up shit? Is this some kinda test? I'm not doing it anymore, Rico!" He yelled on the off-chance the crooked bastard was listening, somehow. "I'm not playing your sick fucking games! You should've just killed me back there!"
He couldn't do this anymore, he thought. He didn't know what sick things Rico had in store for him, but this clearly wasn't just about the money. This was about revenge. This was about making Stan pay. And from the looks of it, it wasn't just a catch-and-release kinda payback. This was the last time.
Stan looked down at his hands and swore. He was shaking like a leaf in a hurricane, and he didn’t even know why. A shiver ran down his spine; the knife clattered to the floor, and he didn’t even know if he’d done it on purpose or not.
He sunk to the hardwood floor and ran his hands down his face. His lip trembled. “I just…I just want to know what’s going on,” he said finally, voice cracking.
The man’s face softened into an expression that looked infuriatingly like pity. “I know, Stan, I know. But I promise, I won’t hurt you. I couldn’t.”
“Yeah you could,” Stan muttered, staring at the floorboards.
“I am able to hurt you, yes, but I could never bring myself to do so.” He smiled wryly. “If I was going to hurt you – if I was going to make absolutely certain that you could never leave this place – then I assure you, I would’ve done so already.”
Stan looked up. “Did you mean that to sound comforting?”
“I – yes, it was meant to be comforting. Sorry. I’m never good with this,” the man said, shaking his head at himself. “Can I help you up, at least?”
Stan stared at him. The man’s smile was soft and a little bit sad, but it was genuine and oddly…almost…brotherly. He stuck his hand out slowly, clearly trying not to startle him.
Stan took it.
Immediately, their fingers interlocked – not because the man was gripping him, but because it felt right. It felt like it fit. He blinked and looked down to find that six fingers were clasped in his, not five.
He looked to the man with an expression of awe and broke into a smile so wide that it hurt, but it didn’t matter because he was throwing himself into a hug with the man, who gaped in surprise but then grinned too.
“Sixer -- Ford!”
"Ack, Stan, I can't breathe!"
"I should've remembered you the second you started babbling about staying up drinking coffee. You're a terrible liar," Stan laughed.
Ford just shook his head and smiled. He went to say something, but he choked up midway through and gave up.
Furiously trying not to let Stan see him cry, he settled to express himself with another hug instead. Stan was perfectly happy with this.
And Ford was happy that he didn't have to use his stun gun on his own brother, because that would be a truly terrible thing to try and explain.

Death squads in Colombia.
Since 2021, Colombia has been rocked by massive anti-government protests, met by brutal police repression. The Escuadrones Móviles Antidisturbios (ESMAD), militarized police units, are the instrument of this violence, leaving a trail of injury and death.
Colombia has been in turmoil since April 28, 2021, following the Paro Nacional (general strike) in response to tax and other reforms affecting the health and pension systems. Faced with these unpopular measures, the population rose up in massive demonstrations. The Colombian government's response was brutal. The ESMAD, the Escuadrones Móviles Antidisturbios, militarized police units known for their excessive violence, were given free rein.
Thousands of victims
The figures speak for themselves: as of May 10, 2021, there were 980 reported disappearances, 962 arbitrary arrests, 1,443 victims of police violence, 111 cases of firearms used against civilians, 16 cases of sexual abuse perpetrated by the forces of law and order, and sadly, 47 deaths, including 37 demonstrators killed by the police or ESMADs on the very first day of the mobilizations. A total of 63 people were murdered during demonstrations linked to the general strike: 34 by the police and ESMAD, 10 by armed civilians and 19 without identified perpetrators. 67 people were seriously injured, 51 by the police and ESMAD, and 16 by armed civilian groups.
The history of ESMAD The Escuadrones Móviles Antidisturbios were created on February 24, 1999. Initially, these squadrons were intended to be temporary, set up as part of a plan to modernize the national police force. They were to "support departments and metropolitan police forces in the management and control of crowds and public spectacles". However, on April 14, 1999, the Director General of Police decided to make the mobile riot squadrons permanent, and they became the central body for maintaining law and order in Colombia's main regions. Despite numerous complaints from human rights organizations, the ESMAD continued to crack down, even increasing their numbers to a total of 3,876 police officers in October 2019, multiplying their initial strength by 18 in the twenty years of their existence. NGOs and the independent press are quick to dub them "death squads".
A history of atrocities
Between 1999 and 2019, the ESMAD killed 18 people in Bogotá, including eleven students and a minor. Victims were often beaten to death or succumbed to allegedly "non-lethal" weapons such as tear gas, ball projectiles used for policing, or other "unconventional weapons" such as batteries, screws, marbles, or explosive liquids. Atrocities have also been committed in the country's rural areas. The 2013 agricultural strike was marked by incessant ESMAD attacks, which resulted in 660 individual or collective human rights violations, 262 arbitrary arrests, 485 injuries (including 21 by gunshot), 52 cases of harassment and threats, listed by several independent sources.
In the face of such police violence, Colombians are calling for the immediate dissolution of the ESMAD. At this very moment, Colombia is facing a major crisis, with peaceful demonstrations being put down in bloodshed.

DAY 10 7.17.23
War and peace walking tour
Started in front of the gold museum
This was fascinating to have this context over a week of exploring the center of the city independently, monuments and museums, (busts, tombs in central cemetery) could be brought to life -without having had a timeline or fluid history spelled out for me (in english) -a history grounded in site, in architecture, in the physical space of the city—though so much of the cities original architecture no longer exists because it was burned down in riots after the assassination of working class, liberal Colombian politician of the people, for the people, by the people– Jeorge Eliecer Gaitan Ayala in 1948 by train station/train tracks which no longer functions or runs (is there is an underground city where train used to run–there is an entrance to go underground) Tour guide proposes: were the CIA formed in 1947 with mandate to spy on and dismantle socialist governments and destabilize communism part of this assassination?
and then in 1985–the Palace of Justice siege or Supreme Court bombing by M-19 group working for drug cartels (Pablo Escobar who had documents/evidence against him housed within the Supreme court and wanted it destroyed) PE said  “I rather have a grave site in Colombia than prison cell in the USA.” The bombing/raid left over 200 injured and 98 people killed–all 11 supreme court justices assassinated–Shed light on independence museum exhibit.
Lots about all the different presidents and political parties and military factions forming—FARC, ELN, EP, M-19, Paramilitaries--complicated and I am sure I am oversimplifying all of this --
How in the 1980s they all  became corrupt because of the drug cartels–and their ties to NYC and MIAMI–The poor are pushed out to the countryside and forced to work to produce cocaine and then poppies are introduced and the production of heroine in the 1990’s–then in 2016 there is the Historical Peace Accord/Agreement –but still conflict over unclaimed land and coca crops.
Men in suits standing around outside buildings in a specific square downtown close to site where the old train station is--later learned it was Emerald Market–trading grounds -seemed like the floor of a stock market -never would have known they were emerald trading. Then I noticed the neon emerald icon at the top of a building close by.
Guide emphasizes So much of history hidden or the people whose have been terrorized have been murdered, and their stories have been covered up ,
Ended in front of theater-where protest signs hung giving voice to indigenous women and young girls who have been raped by American military men who were sent here to “help” in the peace treaty.
The Guide compared the number of deaths and people missing from all of the drug violence to holocaust. Heavy, I think back to the film La Mujer Del Animal I saw the 3rd night.
An hour's gap between tours and I am right by the Botaro museum which is free and so I break the rules and go inside–housing his own artwork and his private collection of art he donated.
Then on the food tour I ran into the war and peace tour guide and he told me Botero always includes the Colors of Colombian flag, snake to indicate sin, gray skin tone to indicate corruption. I bet he is into Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code and I also told him he might like Adam Curtis Hypernormalization.
Food Tour
Street food
Empanadas
Arepas
Mazorca (roasted corn)
Ajiaco (chicken and potato soup with corn, capers, avocado and cream)
wafers with different sweet fillings
Fruit juice
Hot chocolate with cheese -delicious
Capybaras large rodent that is eaten -had a taxidermy version near tables where it was served!! I passed–too much. Talked to Kate who was a world traveler translator -freelance , could work from anywhere -LA  And traveling with mother who is Ukrainian and we ended up talking about fentanyl and opioid crisis in LA -and the mental health crisis at large, and homelessness which is also so visible and present here–and there is a whole economy or presence of trash pickers and sorters and what hard work that is, its own ecosystem, makes me curious about the sanitation department here and trash cycles and systems in general.

Party of Jagran Ki: Observing Otherworldliness Across Lines
Presentation:
The significance of preserving and celebrating traditions cannot be overstated in the fast-paced world of today, where cultures coexist and diversity thrives. The "Jagran Party," which is known for its mesmerizing devotional music and energetic performances, is one such vibrant and spiritually charged tradition. Let's set out on a journey to learn more about the essence of Jagran parties in various parts of the world, including India's Assam and Bihar, China, Colombia, and the Central African Republic.
Assam Jagran Party:
In the northeast of India, Assam is known for its extensive cultural heritage. Here, the Jagran Party tradition exemplifies the Assamese people's deep spirituality. Jagran parties, which are typically held during religious or auspicious occasions, bring together devotees to sing and dance in praise of deities. With the traditional sounds of dhol, cymbals, and flutes, an atmosphere of devotion and fervor is created by the music.
Party Jagran in Bihar:
Another manifestation of the Jagran Party tradition can be found as we move toward the eastern Indian state of Bihar. Jagran parties are celebrated with great enthusiasm in Bihar, which is known for its spiritual and historical significance. Devotees gather in large numbers as dusk falls to take part in the lively performances. An atmosphere of divine ecstasy is created by the mesmerizing voices of the singers and traditional instruments that lift the spirits of the audience.
In the Central African Republic, the Jagran Ki Party:
After traversing continents, we arrive in the Central African Republic, a country teeming with a plethora of distinct customs and cultures. The Jagran Ki Party has forged a place in the hearts of the locals despite its geographical separation from India. This one-of-a-kind and awe-inspiring experience is the result of combining African enthusiasm with Indian spirituality. Indian melodies and the drumming's rhythmic beats coexist harmoniously, captivating both locals and tourists.
China's Jagran Ki Party:
The celebration of the China Jagran Ki Party is set against a fascinating backdrop of ancient China's cultural tapestry. The Jagran tradition has gained popularity among China's Indian diaspora in recent years. Locals and expats alike gather at Jagran parties to soak in the divine atmosphere. An enchanting experience that bridges two distinct cultures is produced by the amalgamation of Indian devotional music and Chinese cultural influences.
Party Jagran Ki in Colombia:
We arrive in Colombia, a nation known for its lively music and joyful celebrations as we travel to South America. Surprisingly, the Jagran Ki Party in Colombia tradition has also established itself in this location. The spiritual fervor of the Jagran tradition and the fervor of the Colombian musicians blend seamlessly. The end result is a riot of vibrant costumes, energetic dances, and soulful music that transcends language barriers and unites people in celebration.
The tradition of the Jagran Ki Party is evidence of the universal language of spirituality, which transcends borders and brings people together for the celebration. The Jagran Ki Party demonstrates the beauty of cultural exchange and the power of devotion in a variety of settings, from the lush forests of Assam and Bihar in India to the far-flung regions of China, Colombia, and the Central African Republic. These celebrations serve as a reminder of our shared humanity and the joyful expression of spirituality that transcends borders in a world that frequently appears divided.

After the electoral authority declared him the victor and socialist rival Luisa Gonzalez conceded defeat, Noboa vowed that "tomorrow we begin work to rebuild a country that has been severely hit by violence, corruption and hatred."
Long a peaceful haven between major cocaine exporters Colombia and Peru, Ecuador has seen violence explode in recent years as enemy gangs with links to Mexican and Colombian cartels vie for control.
The fighting has seen at least 460 inmates massacred in prisons since February 2021 -- many beheaded or burned alive in mass riots.
The bloodbath has spilled into the streets, with gangs dangling headless corpses from city bridges and detonating car bombs outside police stations in a show of force.
In August, the violence claimed the life of anti-graft and anti-cartel presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, mowed down in a barrage of submachine-gun fire after a campaign speech.
He had been polling in second place.
A state of emergency was declared after former journalist Villavicencio's assassination, and Noboa and Gonzalez both campaigned, and voted, in bullet-proof vests and with heavy security details.
On Sunday, Noboa told supporters in his home town of Olon in the southwest his goal was "to restore peace... to bring back education to the youth" and create jobs.
'Destroyed' country
Ecuadorans voted for 10 hours Sunday with no reports of violence, watched over by some 100,000 police and soldiers.
"May we elect the best president because (he or she) will govern a country that is destroyed... to address all these problems such as insecurity," Indigenous voter Ramiro Duchitanga told AFP in Cuenca in Ecuador's south.
"It is a critical election," added Freddy Escobar, a popular 49-year-old singer in Quito, citing crime as his main worry. "I am voting in fear, not knowing what will happen."
The main concerns of Ecuadorans, according to opinion polls, are crime and violence in a country where the murder rate quadrupled in the four years to 2022.
Noboa, who obtained some 52 percent of the vote according to a near-complete count, was elected to only 16 months in office to complete the term of incumbent Guillermo Lasso, who called a snap vote to avoid possible impeachment for alleged embezzlement.
Under the law, Noboa can run again for the 2025-29 presidential term, and the one after that.
Both runoff candidates were relative unknowns in politics.
Noboa is the son of one of Ecuador's richest men, who himself has five failed presidential bids to his name.
The president-elect, whose only political experience is two years as a lawmaker, calls himself "center-left" but embraces neoliberal economic thinking.
He ran on the ticket of the brand-new National Democratic Action alliance, which incorporates parties from the center and left of the political spectrum.
Ecuador has a poverty rate of 27 percent, with a quarter of the population unemployed or holding down an informal job.
Opinion polls list unemployment as voters' second concern.
Noboa reiterated Sunday that he intends to "give progress to a country... that has all the elements to be a global example."
Gonzalez was the handpicked candidate of socialist ex-president Rafael Correa, who governed from 2007 to 2017 and lives in exile in Belgium to avoid serving an eight-year prison term for graft -- another major concern in the country.
From eight candidates, Gonzalez took the most votes in the first round in August with 34 percent, followed by Noboa with 23 percent.
On Sunday, she offered her "profound congratulations" to Noboa, "because this is democracy."
Addressing supporters in Quito, Gonzales also said she would not be claiming fraud.
With 13 lawmakers in his corner out of 137 in parliament, Noboa will not have an absolute majority backing his legislative projects, and with only 16 months in office, will face an uphill battle to push through any reforms, analysts say.
Voting is compulsory for 13.4 million eligible voters in the country of about 18 million, and the election authority said turnout was above 82 percent.
After images on social media showed a person appearing to fill out multiple ballots in favor of Noboa, the head of the National Electoral Commission, Diana Atamaint, promised an "immediate" investigation.
