~How would the companions/advisors/LIs react to the Inquisitor being turned into a cat by apostates, and suddenly being in danger from aggressive nobles with allergies and refugees looking to ‘fortify’ their next meal. Meanwhile, the Inquisitor’s totally nonchalant and just living the best life~
“Companions (+Romanced) reacting to Inquisitor turned into a Cat”
God bless all of you. I love you all. This request kept making me giggle, thank you, @sacredpigeon, for this thought! (I think the void ate this ask, but i had it saved in my document, so all good!) Now we go through who’s a cat person and who’s not.
-Lord Lex
Cullen
-The commander of the Inquisition should be calm and complete in any situation. Not this situation though, my man is panicking. What does he do?! You’re a cat! What kind of magic is this?! How do you reverse this?! He holds you under your armpits and holds you out, trying to figure out what to do. Goes to all of the magic users and begs them for help. If romanced, he tries to see if you're still in there, asking for any sign. If given a sign, it gives him a bit of comfort though he still doesn’t know what to do with you. Promises to fix this, awkwardly patting your head and yelling at anyone who goes too close to you.
(Please picture a poor soldier being yelled at not to get too close to the Inquisitor and all they see is some cat walking around.)
Josephine
-Josey is trying so hard not to gush over this beautiful cat that the companions brought back-wait, it’s who now. See, it’s a little hard to accept that the cat in front of her is the Inquisitor when there’s literally just a cat in front of her. Do anything to prove it’s you and she’ll be convinced, even if it’s a bit skeptical. She’s trying so hard to treat it like a serious situation, but she really can’t when you’re at the war table and there’s just a cat there with a serious face. If romanced, she’s adoring you, petting and kissing you, telling you how pretty/handsome you are. Keeps you close so that no one bothers you while trying her best to get someone to reverse it.
Leliana
-Don’t laugh, don’t laugh, don’t laugh, don’t laugh, don’t- Ok but this is really funny. Leliana is trying so hard to keep a straight face while the others explain what happened to you. She’ll look you dead in the eye, and tell you to nod your head or shake your head before asking you several questions. If you’re still conscious and answer properly, you’ll notice a big smile growing on her face that she is failing to hide. She promises through her laughter that she’ll help find someone to fix it. Later asks if you can understand what her ravens can say.
Vivienne
-Just acting really annoyed. On the opposite side of the cat-loving spectrum, so she’s trying to hide her dislike for the small felines while still addressing you as if nothing happened. Madam Vivienne will not treat you any differently and, as such, will expect the same from you. If you’re more cat conscious than your own, she’ll pass the responsibility onto someone who loves cats, specifically Dorian. You have witnessed both having a conversation about you, Dorian calling you little baby while Vivienne calls you menace or beasty.
Varric
-This has to be one of the goofiest things he’s ever seen and yet no one would believe him if he told this story. Hell, half his stories that are true no one believes. He’s split on treating you like the Inquisitor still or treating you like a cat. Settles on a middle, calling you the “Inquisipurr”. Tries different things to see if you still have your consciousness or if you’re just a cat at the moment. Blink once for yes and blink twice for no. Hiss if you thin Cassandra should be nicer.
Cole
-Number one cat translator. Sort of. He can convey what you’re thinking, especially if you keep your mind. Doesn’t even mind it and still treats you like his friend. But most find it funny when he adds in a random meow because that’s how your mind is currently. Also with the occasional “The Inquisitor wants your attention” and then pointing down at the cat. It's the Cullen thing, but more people are obligated to think that that's just how Cole is instead of thinking he's a lunatic.
Solas
-Honestly? This is some bewildering magic, and he’s pretty sure the caster might have messed up. He’ll admit that it’s adorable, but he’d rather make sure you're safe before anything else. Solas will be one of the main people trying to look for a way to turn you back while also keeping an eye on you. Constantly goes between treating you like a cat and petting you before remembering that this cat is the Inquisitor and acting like nothing happened. If romanced, he tries to get you to follow him so that he can keep an eye on you. Or else, just holds you wherever he goes, holding you away from others when they talk to him.
Cassandra
-Ok, don’t panic. Or freeze. Both would be bad. Cassandra does both. She’s just…so confused and worried but what does she do about it? She tries to corral you to safety, afraid she or someone or something might hurt you. Then immediately goes to find a magic user and get them to figure out how to fix you. She’ll stay by your side the whole time. If romanced, she’ll put you on eye level and talk to you to calm you down, even if you don’t understand or look more calm than she feels right now. Cassandra promises to care for you as long as it takes to turn you back.
The Iron Bull
-What the fuck. WHAT THE FUCK. You’re so small and weird and WHAT. What does he do?! Bull’s trying to keep an eye on you while also trying to get someone to help you that knows what you’re dealing with. If you try to nudge up against him or climb him, he just tries to relax as much as possible, making sure you’re not gonna hurt yourself while an animal. If romanced, he just yoinks you up by the scruff of your neck and onto his shoulder, keeping a hand over you while looking for one of your magical companions.
Dorian
-You know those pet owners you just gasp and say “Look at you!” and pick up their cat real gently like just to hold them close to their chest while petting them? Dorian. He’s treating you like an actual cat while smiling the whole time, both because it’s funny and I do think he loves cats. Even risking cat hair on his outfit and notes. If romanced, he’ll even bring you up to look him in the eye while baby-praising you. “You are stunning, yes you are.” Doesn’t know if you’re fully conscious or not, but has to make sure you know he loves you no matter what.
Sera
-This is so funny and yet so cursed at the same time. She, too, is panicking while laughing at how stupid this is. What in the absolute shit magic is this? She really doesn’t want to touch you in case it’s contagious (Sera, that’s not how magic works) so it’s even funnier seeing her dance around away from you, yelling at you to stop it. If romanced, Sera makes a long scratching stick to pat you on the head and show you affection. She loves you but not risking it.
Blackwall
-Definition of panicked and protective. Whether you’re in a romance with Blackwall or not, he’s trying to hold on to you, his arms carefully around you and close to him. He can’t lose you if you’re close to him. Also, he’s used to nails of animals digging into him. Though if you are in a relationship and people are currently trying to fix your situation, some do spot him cuddling you, scratching your ears and kissing your head, assuring you that you’ll be fine.

“Solas?“
“Yes, Vhenan."
“What are you drawing?“
He still has his eyes on the piece of parchment in front of him, but slows down the repetetive movements of his hand tracing the shapes on paper, as if that might offer him more time to find his answer. "Oh, just some practice. It helps me sort my thoughts," he says with the casual air of somebody trying to evade a question.
“Can I see, then?“
He glances up briefly and notices she has stopped reading her book on the early history of Neromanian magic. She has one elbow propped up on the table and rests her chin on her hand. She is looking at him expectantly, her book clearly forgotten.
He pauses the scratchy movements of his pencil and says rather hesitantly.
"It's not finished."
She leans forward a bit more, trying to catch a glimpse at his paper. He subtly angles it away from her. She might have barely noticed, had she not noted his newfound secrecy regarding his recent drawings. She has become increasingly curious over the past few weeks, and his forced casual demeanor after her question only fills her with more anticipation.
It makes her think of the first time he showed her his artwork. …
The first time she had walked into the rotunda in Skyhold and found Solas high up on the scaffolding with a paint brush in his hands and a concentrated look on his face, she was surprised to learn of his motivation.
"History needs to be documented," he had said when she asked him what he was working on.
After climbing down the scaffolding and taking a step back to admire the process of his work, he continued, "Not by the words of diplomats, but through the eyes of those skilled in artistry. Words will be forgotten, but images? Those will hold significance across time."
She had been moved then. By the bold lines in the fresco and the fierce look in his eyes as he regarded her as he spoke. Like she was someone worthy of admiration. Like he truly saw her. It reminded her of his words before their first kiss.
'You change everything.' He had said.
She didn't really believe him then. She didn't want to be put on a pedestal, far removed from the world and the simple and nomadic lifestyle of her clan that she was accustomed to. She missed roaming mountains and hills, not fighting blighted Templars and navigating treacherous games of power with nobles. That life had seemed like such a long time ago, even though it had barely been a year.
But perhaps she didn't need to suffer though all of this alone. She had her friends. Dorian with his jokes. Varric with his stories. Cassandra with her quiet support and camaderie. Iron Bull helping her with her fighting stances and teaching her new drinking games with Cullen. Even Cole, though he was still figuring out what the word friend even meant. She would help him with that, she had decided then. Friends; they made the aching pull of homesickness more bearable.
But Solas.
Who was he to her? She could call him her friend the supposed. She had the feeling they were becoming closer and yet there was an undeniable distance. Always leaving space for interpretation and mystery while never backing away from any of her questions. So much knowledge he shared, and still she had the feeling she barely knew him at all. He had slowly and unknowingly developed a talent for surprising her with new insights and he did so later again that same evening.
The next hour passed quickly while they were still talking about art and the different depictions of elven lore. He had stared at her intently for a moment, considering her.
"I want to show you something." he had said.
She never passed up an opportunity to learn more so she had indulged him, following him to a plain-looking crate to the side of the room. He removed the protective wards with a wave of his hand. He then uncovered some, by the looks of it, handbound books. He observed them one by one carefully, with a nod of acceptance when he seemingly found what he was looking for and handed her one of the books.
As she opened the first few pages she discovered they were sketchbooks filled with rough outlines in preparation for the next installment of the mural.
Excitedly he pointed to notes in the margin and spoke of where he learned the techniques for collecting and grinding his own pigments. There was a red ocre in the Western Approach that he had recently discovered on one of their missions which was apparently incredibly well suited for his purpose. At her encouragement he had shown her more of of his other drawings too. First of symbolism and color studies, but then more personal ones: of the views of the mountains from Skyhold, running Halla, drying herbs and even of some of the members of the inquisition she recognized.
In turn she told him about how she used to carve wood, especially when winters were rough and her clan was stuck in the same place for long waiting out the biting cold and punishing snow. To keep her fingers from freezing and her mind from wandering to dark places, she had started to carve.
"I haven't had the time since, well you know, this whole mess." she waved the fingers of her marked hand which flashed a sliver of green. Solas had looked thoughtful after her comment, almost like there was a tinge of regret behind his eyes.
The conversation steered in a different direction afterwards, like the seriousness of their predicament weighted more heavily on their shoulders than before. The mysterious books disappeared back into the chest and not long after she had excused herself and called it a night. Somehow she couldn't shake the feeling she had overstepped.
A few days later she returned from a short scouting mission. She climbed the steps to her sleeping quarters, exhausted. She hardly noticed there was an odd-shaped package leaning against her bedroom door until she almost stumbled over it. Her tiredness trading itself for curiosity, she moved to pick it up.
There was no note attached but once she unwrapped the bundle she discovered a beautiful and distinctive elven carving knife and a solid piece of oak wood.
She couldn't help the warm feeling that spread though her body, feeling the comforting weight of the wood and the cool metal of the knife in her hands.
….
She shakes her head as she's brought back to the present. That same rotunda they have since spend so much of their time together. Researching, reading and talking. There had been barely an evening where she didn't end up in the rotunda with Solas. At least when she wasn't away from Skyhold, trying to save the world on missions throughout Thedas.
She looks at Solas from her spot at the table with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
It takes a lot of effort to hide her smile.
Whith an amused tilt to the corner of her lips she says, "You know, Dorian told me he found some sketchbooks laying around, depicting a rather familiar elf. Anything you would know about that?"
Is he… Is he blushing?
"Um, Well you see." he cleares his throat trying to school his expression. "Those were private… And hidden for a reason."
She can't contain a smile. Solas flustered, that's a rare sight.
"You've seen them?" he askes quietly. She notices he has started fumbling with the edges of the paper. She didn't believe his ears could turn a brighter shade of pink.
"Maybe," she says while averting her eyes to the ceiling. She glances back to him out of the corner of her eyes.
Solas looks at her like she has grown an extra pair of ears.
She leans back in her chair and stretches out her legs comfortably under the table. Knowing she has him she doesn't want to push more and decides to spare him some of her teasing. She turns to look at him and softens her expression.
"I rather liked them."
Knowing that is probably not enough to explain why she had looked at his private belongings without permission and seeing the dumbfounded expression on his face slowly making space for embarrassment she decides to tell the whole story.
"I know shouldn't have overstepped, but Dorian said he had something urgent to discuss and before I was even halfway up the stairs he assaulted me with flying books, shouting about discovering my secret admirer. Either I would have stumbled to death or caught them. And, well… Once I started looking I couldn't look away… " she trails off with a slight tinge of shame in her voice.
"You liked them?“
She lookes at him, surprised by the hopefulness in his voice.
A wave of understanding washes over her.
He hid the drawings from her, not because he didn't want her to see them but because he was afraid of her rejection. Even though they had spent the last few months becoming more and more tangled up with each other, stealing fleeting glances and sometimes passionate kisses, they still hadn't really taken a moment to talk about what there was between them.
When she saw the drawings he made of her she had finally understood his interest in her was genuine and went beyond anything resembling a casual dalliance - something she can now confess to have been rather afraid of, because she had developed deeper feelings for him from the moment he started sharing detailed stories dreamt in the fade and his perspective on magic intertwined with life. And then there had been that first kiss… Wel let's just say she's in way too deep to turn back now.
And for all the effort he put into keeping emotional distance between them, he had apparently failed from the moment he had started putting her likeless on paper. For she could see the passion and emotion in the lines, soft shadows and hidden meanings. It made them stand out from all the other drawings she had seen by his hand.
What he couldn't yet put into words, he had found a different way of showing.
"Yes I-" suddenly feeling unsure she pauses for a moment and crosses her arms looking for the right words. "The drawings, they reminded me of who I could be." She takes a deep breath finds her courage and continues. "Someone who people will tell stories about. Not stories about Divine intervention, but of an elven woman's fight for justice. For a kinder world. Somehow I never really managed to see myself that way when I look in the mirror. But those drawings… I guess it's easier to understand who I've become by seeing myself through your eyes. To see the change I'm part of, but most of all to remind myself of where I came from."
She had uncrossed her arms and angled her body towards him over the table. A determined expression rests on her face. He hadn't taken his eyes of her from the moment she started talking.
He looks at her thoughtfully for a moment, considering his reply.
"Very well" he says while some of the tension visibly drains away from his body. She raises her eyebrows in question. "Then it's only time you started showing me your carvings in return. Some good blocks of wood have gone missing. I overheard Blackwall complaining about recently." He shares the accusations with a bemused smile on his lips.
Now it was her turn to blush.
"I was planning on showing you, but first I wanted to practice… " she trailed off her sentence, knowing she doesn't actually have a valid excuse for hiding it from him. And it was not like she hadn't backed him into a corner first.
Feeling relieved he wasn't pulling away at her recent discovery she changes her mind with newfound courage and stands up abruptly while extending her hand in invitation. The purpose of their late night reading session forgotten.
"You're right. And I'm willing to offer you a tour of my recent carving exploits, but only if you can refrain from commenting over the woodchips carpeting the floor." He starts to move as if to get up but she makes him pause as she isn't done yet. "But in turn I will pose for your next drawing." Solas looks at her confused for a moment, as if considering her question.
She pauzes for a moment and adds without hesitation.
"Naked."
"What?"
"That's right."
From a balcony upstairs they could hear some muffled movement followed by a familiar voice echoing down "You know Solas, if you're looking for nude models you only need to ask!"
"Dorian!" they say in unison, horrified.
Solas quickly tucks the sketches under his arm and stands up to grasp her hand, surprising her by pulling her close so fast she has to steady herself with her other hand landing on his chest.
Only a breath away from her ear he says softly so only she can hear.
"It seems like you found yourself a deal, ma Vhenan."
She squeezes his hand in response and when she looks at him there isn't a hint of his previous embarrassment. Instead there is a look of hunger and challenge in his eyes. It's so easy then, to lean over and kiss him, her lips a promise and Dorian's earlier interuption temporarily forgotten. Before she can get lost in the soft press of his lips she pulls back and feels a delighted thrill in the way he slightly chases them as she takes a step back. With a teasing smile on her lips she tugs on his hand bringing him back to reality and encouraging him to follow. As they make their way quietly towards the door she throws a judgemental look over her shoulder towards where she imagines Dorian to be hiding.
She is just able to make out a muffled conversation on the first floor "… These lovesick fools seem to keep forgetting this is a public space, if they don't want an audience they should find a room!"
Not sure if she should be terribly embarrassed or slightly thankful for Dorians intervention she doesn't manage to hide her smile.
"Let's get out of here then." she says as they start to make their way through Skyhold.
He squeezes her hand.
"Gladly."

Hello! Love your blog! I had a kind of a silly/fun reaction. How would the DA:I companions and advisors react to a playful Inquisitor sneaking up behind them and giving them a quick tickle attack? 😊
I guess this is mostly under the assumption that they are all close w/the Inquisitor, and comfortable with sudden physical contact. Enjoy!
Cassandra yelps, a high pitched squeak that has her clapping her hands to her mouth with a horrified expression, utterly mortified at the sound she just made. She blushes furiously, but she's not going to stoop to the Inquisitor's level of childishness and return the tickle attack. She will rise above. Forget this affront to her reputation. Or so she would have the Inquisitor think... for a good tactician never reveals their cards, and always has a plan of (tickle) attack.
Varric laughs. He laughs and laughs and laughs until tears stream from his eyes and his stomach hurts. For him, it really dispells the notion of the Inquisitor being this large figure at the front of a huge military force. It's utterly ridiculous, and definitely not the intended effect the Inquisitor wanted on him.
Solas is taken off guard. He's seen and done it all, so it takes something truly special to leave him stunned. Something like a tickle attack. He stands there in a horrific, drawn out silence after the Inquisitor's attempt to tickle him, trying to process what just happened. Solas spends the next thirty seconds resembling a dumbstruck fish. He hastily closes his mouth and reaches a tense agreement with the Inquisitor to never speak of this again.
Oh, the indignity. Dorian is actually appalled at the noise he makes, which is something between a giggle and a squeak, and turns swiftly on the Inquisitor with (playful) murder in his eyes. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty, oh no, and so he rolls his sleeves up and prepares himself for an all out tickle war. Naturally, the Tevene in him begs him not to stoop so low. His pride, on the other hand, begs him to take revenge.
Sera screams bloody murder. Good luck hiding from her, for the Inquisitor chose the wrong person to start a tickle fight with. This girl is ruthless. She'll hide in the rafters and swoop down upon the Inquisitor when they least expect it. Throw in a few lobbed pies and that'll make the experience downright messy. Never mind playful, she's starting a war.
Blackwall is really ticklish, and ticklish everywhere. He can sense someone creeping about and probably assumes the worst. To be tickled instead of receiving a knife in the back is an odd kind of relief. To him, it helps to maintain a sense of normalcy. Yes, the world has gone mad, but people can still have tickle fights and laugh like children. Normalcy is the best kind of revenge.
Cole isn't ticklish. Still, he understands the concept. It's likely that he'd ask the Inquisitor why they felt the need to try and ambush him like that. He gets that they're trying to be playful and get him to laugh, but there are easier ways to do it!
The Iron Bull is not ticklish. He's not, so don't bother even trying. Except he's totally lying. Ask Krem and he'd say, "The boss is ticklish behind the ears. Don't ask how I know." He'd probably bark out a laugh, then full on lose it at the attempt to tickle him. Though he'd likely not retaliate unless he knew for sure the Inquisitor is comfortable with unexpected physical contact.
Vivienne isn't actually ticklish. Unlike Bull, when she says it, she means it. Any attempt to tickle her will be met with extreme retribution. Messing with the Iron Lady means snowballs flung at high speeds into the back of the Inquisitor's head when they least expect it. Vivienne is all smiles, icy and sharp, and when confronted all she has to say is, "What ever do you mean, my dear?"
He'd have to be really close to the Inquisitor for Cullen to be even slightly comfortable with that sudden movement. His knee-jerk reaction would be to panic. He'd also probably try to defend himself or physically remove himself from the situation. If he is comfortable, well, this man grew up with siblings. He's gonna tickle the Inquisitor right back, maybe even give into childish impulse and full body slam them into the floor... and apologise profusely after. And fix his hair.
Leliana sees it coming from a mile away. She'd turn swiftly and catch the Inquisitor's wrists in her hands, then offer them a knowing smile that simultaneously warms and terrifies. "I wish you luck for your next attempt." Is that a threat or a challenge? You decide.
Josephine would yelp with surprise, then erupt into giggles despite herself. She feels just like a young girl again, having tickle fights with Yvette until her tutors reprimanded her for terribly unlady-like behaviour. Josie would never in a million years dream of actually retaliating, but she sure thinks about it. A lot.

Cold and Dark (F!LavellanxCullen)
AN: Initially posted this on ao3 but I never go on there so I deleted it and decided to share here instead. (Using the default name, Ellana.)
Orders, pleas, prayers, and screams drown out the sound of the distant marching and the flames starting to engulf Haven. A trebuchet is aimed for the mountain top, but before it can be fired, a blighted looking creature approaches. Ellana urges her companions to get moving, hoping they won't stop when they realize she's no longer behind them. Ellana had planned to linger to set off the trebuchet, what she did not plan was almost being hit directly by the creature.
One moment, Ellana fears her life will end at the hands of the one that calls himself Corypheus, and in the next moment, she is falling through an opening in the ground, unsure of what her fate is any longer.
When she comes to, she finds herself in a dark, cold, and empty cave. She gets up, doing her best to ignore the pain that lances throughout her whole body. Nothing appears to be broken, just bruised with some scrapes here and there. Ellana lets out a hiss when she tries to look around, the back of her head throbbing, she remembers then, how Corypheus had thrown her against the trebuchet. The pain finally catching up now that her adrenaline is wearing out.
It's okay, nothing she can't handle.
Once she makes it out of the cave, she realizes how bad the situation is. The aftermath of the avalanche is making it nearly impossible to see, but she has to pick a direction and move forward. She finds a couple of campfires, and although they are old, they at least let her know she is going in the right direction.
Eventually the strong wind dies down as she continues up the mountain, but she is beyond exhausted. The cold is becoming unbearable, if she was cold before it's nothing to what she feels now. In fact, the cold seems to numb her to the pain she was feeling before, save for the scrapes that she's praying won't become infected. The sound of her teeth chattering surrounds her as she keeps trekking upwards. Just reach the top of the mountain. She keeps repeating to herself. But then what? What if there is no sign of anyone?
Ellana has been avoiding thinking about the others, afraid that there's a possibility she failed and the old campfires she found were of a very small group of survivors. Did her companions make it? A part of her regretted asking them to stay behind with her but they didn't even hesitate to follow her. Her mind then wanders to her last conversation with Cullen. "But what of your escape?" "Perhaps you'll surprise it, find a way." "If we are to have a chance, if you are to have a chance, let that thing hear you."
Ellana herself hadn't said much at the time. What could she possibly say to someone she's still getting to know but also likes? She finds it ridiculous to be thinking of something so trivial when her life is on the line, as well as the impending danger on all of Thedas if they can't figure out a way to put an end to Corypheus and his plans. Then a dark thought crosses her mind, Do they still need her? Does she want them to need her?
She is tired, and not just from trudging through the snow for who knows how long. Securing the templars aid took a toll on her. Being brought into her own mind and being forced to see what the envy demon planned to do while pretending to be her. Cole helped so much, but there was no time for her to discuss what happened, on a deeper level, with someone else.
Nightmares had kept her from getting a full night's rest. Ellana always waved away Josephine's comments about how she would wake before even Cullen. Most of those early mornings Ellana spent collecting elfroot, it benefitted Adan as well as gave her an excuse to wander away from everyone until she felt ready to rejoin everyone. On a few rare occasions, Cullen happened to wake at the same hours. Ellana noticed the look in his eyes, mirroring her own. A part of her wanted to bring up what had happened, if anyone, maybe he would understand. But she'd always back out and instead would ask him to spar with her. His eyes would lose the darkness to them, and she'd feel her mind clear.
Now though, all Ellana could think about was what was waiting for her at the top. Another campfire. As she walked past it, she felt the smallest bit of warmth. Looking back at it as she paused, she realized there were embers. A spark of hope ignited in her, as much as she didn't want to get her hopes up. Her body had reached past its limit but she couldn't stop now, if she stopped she wouldn't be able to get up again.
A few more steps, if they're nearby, she'll be able to see them from the top.
As Ellana reaches the top, she notices lights in the distance. Before she can react, she sees several figures running toward her. As they become clearer, a wave of relief washes over her. Inquisition soldiers, Cassandra and… Cullen. "There! It's her!"
They found her. Unable to stay standing any longer, Ellana falls to her knees.
The inquisition soldiers begin to reach for her but Cullen stops them, "I'll carry her." The soldiers step back as Cullen removes his mantle and drapes it across Ellana. The action doesn't even register to Ellana, nor what he's saying, until he reaches down and scoops her up in his arms. However, Ellana doesn't have the energy to react like she normally would at such a display; instead, she simply curls up against his chest, holding onto his mantle with what strength she has left. Through her teeth chattering, she thinks she hears Cullen say, "I'm sorry, my armor plate must not be helping with the cold." She's not sure though, her consciousness keeps slipping away even though she wants to stay awake as much as she can.
Her teeth chattering doesn't begin to subside until they near the campsite, but she's still very cold. To the left of her, Cassandra speaks quietly, "Commander." That single words earns a sigh from Cullen and she feels herself being handed off to one of the soldiers after a beat of silence. Ah, it must be a warning. Now is not the time for there to be new rumors surrounding her. Ellana opens her eyes and looks toward Cullen. He looks worried, well more worried than usual.
Something unspoken passes between them and she misses his warmth as soon as he lets her go onto the waiting soldier's arms. From the corner of her eye, Ellana sees another soldier approaching with a thick blanket. The soldier absentmindedly reaches for Cullen's mantle, which appears to have been a mistake. Cullen stops the soldier's hand in place, but seems to realize the situation he got himself into. He clears his throat and clarifies, "I'll do it." The soldier, afraid to say anything, simply nods and waits with the blanket in hand.
Cullen gently removes his mantle but instead of putting it on, grabs the blanket from the waiting soldier, and puts it over Ellana. It's not until he steps back and nods at the soldier in dismissal that he puts his mantle back on. At that final sight, Ellana can't help but be glad that she kept going.

The Inner Circle Crushing on Someone from a Different Background -- Part Three
this request comes from anon, who asks: 'Head canons for the main dragon age squard (if you feel up to it of course!!!!) About them crushing on someone from a different background (example: cullen and someone rich)'
I ended up splitting this up because I got carried away... my bad. If you want any of these to be revisited or you want me to go into more detail, feel free to shoot me another ask! The same can be said if you want DA characters from different games.
Part One (Blackwall, Cassandra, Cole) Part Two (Cullen, Dorian, The Iron Bull) Part Three (Josephine, Leliana, Sera)
Tumblr media
JOSEPHINE:
The Montilyet family, while of note, had to carefully tend to their money and businesses in the aftermath of being barred from Orlais. Still, Josephine and her siblings regularly interacted as (and with) members of the nobility in Antiva and Orlais. Josephine herself, while a romantic, is particularly understanding of many different aspects of life and knowledgeable on things outside of the upper class.
Station in society has very little to do with Josephine falling in love. For her, it comes down to a matter of character. She has a soft spot for the romantic, but places good-deeds and honor above all else. Meeting someone of a more humble origin isn’t necessarily how she expected to fall in love, but somehow she’s enamored with a stablehand for the Inquisition. They’re very kind, always tending to the requests she has within record time, and respecting those around them regardless of occupation.
Josephine falls hard. At first she denies it; she has very little time for romance when there are holes in the sky, plus someone back in Orlais has already spoken for her. Yet, she can’t help but be consumed by the gentle stable hand–and the concept that their love might be forbidden. She doesn’t give into fairytales as easily as her sister does, however, so she dismisses her feelings away as a crush. To her, it’s not only illogical to fall in love during wartime, but it’s also improbable that she would get to pick her spouse as the eldest of her family that borders on ruin.
It takes some meddling from Leliana for Josephine to confess her feelings. After that, it’s only a matter of time before her beloved stablehand somehow catches wind of it. They’d never believe that Lady Josephine would ever reciprocate their feelings, so they didn’t dare try anything. But, with rumors of her feeling the same, it was now or never. It takes a while before Josephine is comfortable with the concept of a long term relationship during such trying times. However, if they can fall in love while holes are in the sky, then telling her family and other suitors should be a piece of cake.
LELIANA:
Leliana grew up across Thedas, parts of her life being contributed to Orlais and others to Ferelden. Having been a bard in the Orlesian court and a Sister in the Chantry, Leliana is influenced by a number of places and cultures. She grew up being tossed from place to place, never having much of a clue of where she would land next.
When she meets someone that catches her interest, she never anticipates that they’ll be so different from her in origin. She likely anticipates that they’ll also have been raised in the church, but instead it’s quite the opposite. They’re oblivious. They don’t seem to have much care or awareness of the world around them, only interacting with the world that they directly make contact with.
When Leliana first meets them, I think they frustrate her quite a bit. Leliana has always had to be very careful with every choice she made as a young woman, so when she meets someone who she sees as “careless” she wants nothing to do with them. She keeps her distance, making sure that they operate through Leliana, Cullen, or even the Inquisitor. Yet, she can’t deny that they’re quite attractive–even if their actions seem so odd to her.
After a close call in the field, they’re humbled quite a bit and become aware of the stakes of Thedas that Leliana had warned them of. Following said close call, they become more conscious of their actions and try to be more careful on the field. This change probably makes Leliana’s romantic interest deeper, rather than it just being physically attractive. They even approach Leliana for advice–an action that moves Leliana and makes her consider how they’ve changed. It takes a while for either of them to be fully comfortable with one another, but after some humbling experiences the two draw closer.
SERA:
Variety is the spice of life for Sera. Everything new or different is automatically better in her book. She seeks adventure in the mundane and hardly ever takes the easy way out. In fact, anything similar to her upbringing is a little stale to her in some way. However, Sera’s past is a bit of a mixed bag. Her early life was spent in an elven alienage before she was taken in by a human woman. So anything outside of the realm of Ferelden qualifies as different. Yet, Sera rebukes her own connection to the upper class–citing it as her cause to protect the “little people” of Thedas.
Upon meeting someone of the upper class, Sera would quickly group them in with all of the other nobility that she and the Friends of Red Jenny hate. Someone with such a high position and influence isn’t to be trusted in her eyes, especially when they could turn at a moment's notice. She keeps her distance, even reporting them to the Inquisitor on several occasions–so that they can keep an eye on them, of course. Sera even plays pranks on them since they make such an obvious target for the Friends of Red Jenny. However, as Sera watches from the shadows she begins to reconsider her opinion.
They’re of noble birth and have a substantial amount of money, but they use it in such a way that many other powerful people do not. They support the people of Haven, and they help purchase blankets for the displaced villagers of the Hinterlands. In fact, most of their money goes to people who need it more rather than keeping for themselves. Sera wants to change her perspective entirely, but a deep part of her is afraid that it’s all an elaborate trick being played on her.
She confronts them in the middle of the night, even drawing her bow in their face. Yet, they don’t seem afraid in the slightest. In fact, they seem relieved that it’s Sera. It takes a bit of discussion for Sera to put her bow away, and even longer for her to realize that she might’ve been wrong about them. Those seeds of doubt develop further into romance, but her eventual partner doesn’t have an issue using their station to support the people of Thedas.

Because I can, have some DAI cooking headcanons
Iron Bull: very good at it. He doesn’t cook for the Chargers, but he enjoys it once in a while and he knows how to make plain food taste good, and he’ll compromise on his less local spices for the good of the group
Cassandra: surprisingly skilled. Her uncle made one comment, once that cooking was beneath people of their class. She went straight to the kitchen the next morning and learned everything she could
Leliana: doesn’t do it often, especially these days, but she used to enjoy it and it might be good for her to cook more. She’s good at it and it involves way less life or death
Varric: doesn’t advertise, doesn’t volunteer if someone else speaks up first, but he’s pretty good. Makes plain food taste good, middle of the road tastes that isn’t too much for any palate
Blackwall: actually a little less good than people expect. He can cook on a fire and make it work, but he punishes himself with plain food and he never cooked for anyone else, so he can cook things the way he likes them, and if you don’t like them that way you’re fucked
Solas: excellent cook, this far down the list because he will 1000% over season to spite whoever else is with him, double especially if it’s Dorian or Vivienne. He learned he had a higher spice tolerance and now he only cooks with ghost peppers
Sera: competent cook, got her own recipe in the reference books (it’s for corn), but she can will and does whip out the most random flavour combinations. Some of them work
Cullen: has very expensive tastes and is 1000% incapable of meeting them himself. He knows this though, and will therefore never complain unless he’s paying for a meal and expected better. Has burned water
Josephine: has travelled enough through various stages of her life to understand the importance of buying good supplies and hiring a good cook. Leliana has tried to teach her more than once… Josephine still jokes it’s Leliana’s only failure
Vivienne: used to pride herself on never having needed to learn; has absolutely no idea how the hell ingredients become food, especially because she usually only eats fancy food. Insists on trying to approach cooking as a form of alchemy. It really, really doesn’t work
Dorian: started out very into the “adventure” of eating rations and preserved travel foods. Insists he still is solely to seem better than Vivienne and so he will never be asked to cook and accidentally reveal his secret: he can NEVER successfully tell the sugar from the salt. Underseasons in self defense
Cole: has dangerously flexible ideas as to what counts as food. Banned from cooking or helping cook to prevent loss of life
And our Four Heralds AU beans, just because I know y’all don’t care about them But I Do!
Corin Cadash: the best of the four by a mile. Good grasp of flavours, genuinely enjoys the experience (and distraction from their chronic pain), considers anything done in 20 minutes of effort or less an acceptable depression meal and knows what seasonings need to be cooked to be good and what can be added after to personal taste
Séamus Trevelyan: competent, doesn’t usually burn things, the taste of food is generally at least a little improved by his cooking it. Not fancy, but knows what he’s good at and sticks to it
Tavi Adaar: a little over-flexible on what is considered edible to non-qunari, but nothing worse than a stomach bug. Can break down and butcher a carcass like no other, but not the one you’d ask to cook it
Lluciano Lavellan: knows every single plant on Thedas, where it comes from, how to grow it, and every single use for it. Grew up with parents whose idea of cooking was “boil it white”, so if it can be eaten raw without dying he will. Only slowly being convinced that cooking can actually make food taste good. Bites raw onions and potatoes if not stopped

playing dragon age inquisition but it's only my commentary out of context
"I have two theories. One makes more sense but I'm going with 'solas is a furry king' for now. No, I will not elaborate"
"of COURSE I am taking the gay gang"
"Cullen is one of those guys who need to figure out that boys are hot too once he's over his other stuff. one thing at a time"
"THOSE BASTARDS ARE NOT LETTING ME PET THE DOG??? homophobia. transphobia. worse than what they did to krem's dialogue options"
(about trespasser) "I want to do two things once I meet that guy again. Fuck him. And redeem him. But I'm fine as long as I get one of those things. Spoiler: it's not the redeeming part"
"ONE WOULD HAVE THOUGHT WE HAVE INQUISITION AGENTS TO DELIVER RANDOM LETTERS TO THE OTHER END OF THE HINTERLANDS. THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE AGENTS FOR. WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THIS SHIT"
not a quote from me but I think it's important to mention the moment I fell from a cliff, face planted on the ground with approx. 1 HP left, right next to a camping spot. Cue Dorian: THIS IS A GOOD SPOT TO SET UP CAMP
Me, still on the ground: JA MIR GEHT'S GUT, DANKE DER NACHFRAGE
"Lace was right. We should just let the bad guys claim this desert"
"I don't know what's worse. Mr. 'i'm not like other elves' guy or Little Miss 'I'm not an elf, obviously, because I was raised by humans! how dare you!'. I think they can share the first place"
"blackwall i don't care that you would have liked to be there for this mission, i am not taking you out of the stables to pick up a single artifact"

Hello! For no particular reason whatsoever (jk this is for the Arlathan Exchange), what is Eira Lavellan's canon timeline of events in DAI? How does her relationship with Solas evolve?
Oh hello anon, and thank you for the ask! 👀
Great question! Definitely not helped by the fact that most of my published fics are post-trespasser stuff and aus and smut 😂
This is gonna be a LONG one. So I'm putting it under a cut and tagging it with "OC lore" to make it easy to find. Feel free to skim as needed! Some of this may be a bit repetitive from my exchange letter.
Before I start though, I just want to make it super clear that you absolutely don't have to use my OC, and I will love whatever you make whether it's an OC or a generic Lavellan. 💛
Eira's timeline follows the in-game canon pretty closely, except I usually lengthen the amount of time the events of Inquisition take (because a single year feels very unbelievable to me.)
Before the events of the game start, she's in her mid-thirties, has been the First of her clan for many years, and is probably expecting to become the clan's Keeper in the next few years or so. Her father is a halla keeper and her mother works with textiles. Her name is Eira (loosely translated as "snow" in Elvhen) because she was born during a rare cold snap, during which the snow stuck around for longer than usual.
When she was a child, she thought she'd become a halla keeper like her dad, but then her magic revealed itself and she became the clan's First instead. Her clan travels around the Amaranthine Ocean's coast outside of Wycome, sticking to forests when they aren't trading with humans. They take their halla up into the mountains in the spring to graze and harvest their wool. (I like to imagine halla are similar to different breeds of cashmere goats!)
As the Herald, Eira sides with the mages. She doesn't love being the so-called "Herald of Andraste," but is shrewd about her position -- she has the Anchor, there's a hole in the sky, someone has to deal with (and if she can leverage that position to help her people, she will). She's patient (if at times a bit cold) with her advisors and new companions. She warms up to most everyone eventually (particularly becoming friends with Dorian, Bull, Cole, and Cassandra) but is keenly aware of her position and the weight and baggage that the title of Herald and later Inquisitor hold. I haven't actually decided how she deals with the Winter Palace yet. My gut says she probably finds a way to ally with Briala. Later on she also allies with the wardens, much to Solas’s chagrin.
Other decisions: she becomes a knight enchanter, she saves the Chargers, she (gently) convinces Solas to spare the mages who accidentally kill Wisdom, she keeps Cole as a spirit, she helps Vivienne with the wyvern heart, she helps Cullen stop lyrium, and she forgives Blackwall. She does not drink from the Well (which she later feels regret and grief about). She keeps her vallaslin. Her clan survives the events of Inquisition, and she maintains a good relationship with them.
Her "sit in judgement" decisions rely on empathy and the desire to see people become better. She isn't cruel and doesn't enjoy suffering, and doesn't make decisions out of revenge. She's diplomatic where she can be, and values harm reduction. If someone can be better, and be useful or helpful (like in the case of sparing Alexius and having him study under the Inquisition's watch), she'll pursue that. This of course informs her desire to save Solas at the end of trespasser. She not only sees him as worth saving but as capable of being saved.
I'd say her relationship with Solas also develops pretty closely to what we see in canon. They start as kind of hesitant allies, then become friends, and then realize they have feelings for each other, have the Fade kiss, etc. In the very beginning, they're kind of wary of each other, but Eira soon comes to enjoy talking with Solas. While she does disagree with him on several subjects (like the Dalish), she finds that he's usually open to hearing her out and admitting when he's wrong, which she respects. She almost sees him as an odd sort of puzzle, and is kind of compelled by him, and starts to enjoy their discussions and their arguments. Having spent much of her life aware and embedded in Dalish politics, she's used to dealing with difficult people, so I don't think she's too put off by Solas’s more difficult nature. It helps that he does seem to genuinely care about helping people -- that means a lot to her. Here's a summary (from a wip of course 😂) of that relationship stage from Solas’s POV:
Still they argue often. He challenges her Dalish beliefs about spirits and the Fade, about their gods and their stories, and she challenges his own assumptions in turn. He finds she is not as ignorant as he once feared. He finds instead that her beliefs are nuanced, her opinions carefully crafted and born from research, from a life spent in the scholarly pursuits of magic and history. He begins to enjoy their arguments, their rhetorical sparring and endless discussions. He begins, despite himself, to look forward to them.
She surprises and confounds him at every junction. He fears, even, that she has become a friend.
They don't develop a Proper Relationship until after Solas's balcony confession scene, and probably have their first time sometime shortly after that. And while Solas is quick to say "I love you," she's a lot more hesitant. That level of emotional intimacy is a bit difficult for her.
Because of who they both are as people, they're a little cautious and awkward around each other at first. Eira's worst fears revolve around losing control, and so emotional vulnerability can be difficult for her. She's always wary of pushing Solas’s boundaries and is very gentle and careful with him. She probably realizes she loves him sometime mid-game, and probably at a really innocuous moment when they're traveling or something. By the time the Winter Palace happens, I'd say they're very comfortable with each other and at like, the peak point of their relationship in terms of comfort, vulnerability, and trust (it's a smut fic, but this is a pretty good summary of their dynamic at that point.)
To me her relationship with Solas is all about like...two very guarded people who haven't had a relationship in a long time learning to be *people* with each other. With Solas she doesn't have to be the "Inquisitor" (him calling her this post-breakup hurts even more for this reason), and can just be her nerdy awkward self around him. Similarly, Solas can mostly forget his own position while he's with her. They still enjoy the occasional verbal sparring match and banter, but there's an undercurrent of love and trust.
Eira knows throughout most of the relationship that Solas has secrets and a past he won't share. She's patient with him about it, and never pushes him. When he breaks up with her, she assumes it's likely related to that. She's angry and bitter, but she doesn't hate him.
After he leaves, though, she's pretty wrecked and heartbroken. It takes a lot for her to open up and trust someone, so to have him leave (without even saying goodbye!) feels like a stark betrayal. She can't stand the way her friends seem to pity her and feel bad for her, either. Leading up to Trespasser, she sort of just squares that part of herself away and focuses on the Inquisition.
During Trespasser, she learns that Solas is Fen’Harel before he can reveal it to her himself. Her reaction is less shock and horror and more a grim "this makes sense." She's mostly upset that he never trusted her enough to tell her.
Post-Trespasser, she's determined to save both Solas AND the world, in part because it's what she *wants* and in part because she's convinced that its the only way forward. She has a theory that the Veil is already failing, and that if Solas dies bringing it down -- that's just one less powerful ally the world has against the Evanuris and all the other horrors to come.
Post-Tespasser Eira is reclusive, secretive, and kind of a hot mess. She's that meme of the big conspiracy theory board with all the red lines connecting everything.
Tumblr media
She disbands the Inquisition, convinced that it only presents Solas more opportunities to spy. She takes heart in Leliana's assurances that they have their own network of contacts and spies, and also in the fact that Cassandra as the Divine is a powerful ally. She spends her time traveling and learning everything she can about the Veil and Solas’s plans, making time for her clan and her friends where she can.
In my happy ending au, I basically skip over how this would all actually resolve because I simply don't have enough information. The basics: she and Solas are together, and the Veil is peacefully coming down, though there may be issues to deal with once that happens. It takes awhile for her to trust him again, and to work through all of her complicated feelings. Their relationship is pretty delicate for awhile, but eventually becomes fairly healthy and loving.
Okay 😂 that was a lot! I hope that answers your questions, and if not feel free to send another ask if you need to! And again, feel free to use your own OC or a generic one! I promise I will love whatever you create 💛💛💛

“Companions React to Inquisitor hiding their newest injuries”
Hahahaha. So many feels. Also, don't worry if some stuff might move. Ficing things.
-Lord Lex
Cullen
-It would take this man forever to notice. Not out of negligence but he tries to mind his own business. The first time he sees it, possibly a time when you drop the enchantment, he’s startled and asks how it’s happened before apologizing for intruding on the matter. If you tell him the truth, he’ll be outraged and ask if you’d like him to do something about it.
Josephine
-Pays a little more attention than Cullen but still tries to respect your privacy. She knows something’s up, whether it be flinching or turning your face in an unusual fashion. When her concern grows, she tries to bring it up as delicately as possible. If you show her, she’s horrified and tells you how sorry she is and how she’ll do anything in her power to reprimand the person.
Leliana
-More or less one of the first to notice but won’t bring it up. It’s your business, she will not intrude on it. Now if you do bring it up and/or show her, she will be livid. The thought of you getting hurt because of some noble snob and she had not been told goes against her job. You can bet she will find a way to make that noble’s life a living hell and that he begs for death. Yeah, she’s a little ticked.
Vivienne
-Do not, whatever you do, tell her it’s new. If she gets even a whiff that you have an untreated injury that you’re hiding with magic, she’s going to give you a lecture. If it’s new? Oh she’s going to be on a man hunt. Will demand to know who hurt you so that she can repay the favor. The Ice Queen will not hesitate, bitch.
Varric
-He knows. He just does. He knows how to hide secrets well but he can also tell when others are hiding something. But he’ll respect your choice…unless it’s something that is harming you/has harmed you. Then he’s gonna oh-so-subtley and very gently tell Cassandra to check on you. What? He’s not a touchy-feely person but he’ll make sure his friends are good, healthy, and not badly injured.
Cole
-Cole knows it’s there and may or may not know the reason behind it. But he knows it hurts, so you’ll usually find things that make you happy suddenly pop up almost out of thin air. Will even leave solvents or herbs that can help with injuries becuase you flinch from it. Doesn’t mean to but he will point it out if some pain starts to settle in or someone sees you flinch.
Solas
-Oh? Illusionary magic? Whatever for? Solas can recognize it a mile away and yet won’t bother you about it unless it starts to become worrisome. Will pull you away from others and try to ask you if it’s something he can assist with. If you do allow him to help, he’ll either help try to heal it or help you to better hide it. It’s your choice after all.
Cassandra
-Remember the last post that said she’d be livid? Yeah, this is worse. Worse for the person who caused it, not you. She’ll respect your space but will try to make sure it’s not cuasing you any pain. Josephine does tell you that someone who seems to have a connection to the Pentaghasts had been seen threatening the nobleman. Cassandra will not confirm nor deny anything.
The Iron Bull
-Once more, believes people should show their scars with pride. But will respect you wanting to keep it hidden. Of course, he can tell when a scar is recent. And there’s a reason he’s known (or was known) as one of the best damn spies. He’ll find the noble and do whatever he thinks will fit for what the noble did. The punishment should match the crime, after all.
Dorian
-He knows due to his years of study with the different types of magic. Plus, traces of magic just so happened to suddenly appear around your face after that stiff night at that party? He can connect the dots. His first question is would you like some help with trying to heal it. His next question is how do you want like your noble served? Burned, fried, or frozen?
Sera
-People think Sera is stupid or oblivious. On the contrary, she’s observant when she wants to be. And she can see something is up with your face. Unlike the others, though, she’ll question and get into your business. If you tell her what happened, she’ll nod say ok and walk away. Which is very worrying. Until you find out someone had filled up said noble’s house with bees. It’s a big house.
Blackwall
-Forgive him, he tries to mind his business. Also doesn’t notice things immediately. If you let it slip, he’ll feel stupid that he hadn’t noticed and ask if you need to talk about it or if you need anything to soothe the pain. Another person who, if you tell him what had happened, will be outraged and promise you that the noble will get their comuppance. Don’t worry about him talking to Sera later about how many bees she needs, it’s a different matter. Definitely.

For the DA prompts, DA:I - anything that deals with the way you can screw up table missions until the elf inquisitor to lose their entire clan. (And a table mission being the ONLY TIME THIS IS ACKNOWLEDGED OR MENTIONED IN THE GAME OMFG.) Your choice of characters but even years later I'm salty about BioWare dropping the ball BIG TIME on this and will seek out any and all opportunities to redress this CRIME OF STORYTELLING.
Omg I hate those missions! The fact there's like one right choice each time or else they and/or a bunch of other people die and even if it basically worked the last round it kills them the next time you choose it or vice versa fills me with fury every time! How are those even equivalent to shit like some Trevalyn cousins pretending to be closer to the Inquisitor than they are and everything basically working out regardless of your choice? It's like top 3 worst advisor choice moments.
Request Post Is Here
So, the first time I played an elven Inquisitor they were a female elf romancing Cullen and that's sort of always stuck in my head.
This is set immediately after the results of the last choice.
XxX
News of Clan Lavellan's fate cast a sober air across the Inquisition. Cullen still sent troops on the off chance that some of her clan yet survived, but Ellana had little hope.
She had been cautious, over and over again, choosing more often than not to avoid using their troops in case her clan thought they were under attack or the people decided to retaliate against them once the troops were no longer there, but now she wished she hadn't.
In her dreams, she sends twice the number Cullen would have. And Elven scouts before them so Deshanna was warned. A letter would be sent back, scolding her for being so overprotective, but with undertones of love.
Ellana would never receive another letter from her clan. She'd never hear Deshanna's gentle voice or the laughter of the children or....
Spread around her on the floor of her room was every piece of correspondence, every note and recommendation her Advisors had given about her clan. She could trace the horrible path of destruction and distrust, could see exactly where, suddenly, she'd had too much hope. Too much faith.
She'd been spending too long among the shems, had internalized too much of her position and titles.
"There's no telling if it would have gone differently." Cullen's voice pulled her from the downward spiral of her thoughts and she looked up to see him at the top of her stairs, Cole peeking at her through the railing lower down them.
"They would not have attacked the Inquisition! Some of these cities are Inquisition allies!" she gave the protest that had been swimming in her head for hours, since the news had first reached them.
He walked forward, kneeling on the floor on the other side of the pile before he was too close and looming too tall. Perhaps all of his time praying had made him sensitive to such things and she still had enough reason left within her to appreciate it.
Reaching out, hesitating just long enough that she could have stopped him, he took up one of Leliana's recommendations, smoothing down the wrinkles Ellana had made as she gripped it. "Though a lie might bring you comfort, I cannot offer one. You will never stop second-guessing your choices in this. The pain will become duller, less pronounced. Eventually you might go days, even weeks without thinking of it. And while it does not help now, at least you will have the comfort in knowing you were trying to do what was best, to save as many lives as possible."
"By hesitating, by using shem diplomacy when I should have shown my power," she bit out, her hand back on his final recommendation, the one she hadn't taken.
Cullen shook his head. "When this first started...do you remember, those weeks ago? I recommended sending troops in immediately," he gave a wry, humorless smile, "I fear that is my answer to most anything these days. In retrospect, I know that would have been the wrong choice. If...if it was the right choice this time--and we cannot know that--you were still not wrong to hesitate."
She let herself dwell on those words, remembering the recommendation he spoke of as she had only just reread it. He'd backed down as soon as she pointed out that her clan might react poorly to shem troops marching towards them. And she still knew she'd been right on that account.
"You each offer advice based on your expertise and I don't push you for more. You're no diplomat, but if I'd had you reach out to the other city-states instead of Josie, it might have gone differently." She knew he had close contacts high up in Kirkwall and Starkhaven, ones who might have been willing to leverage their own connections in the rest of the Marches.
"I...don't know." He wanted to say more, she could tell, could imagine him wondering if the people he knew had done less than their best because it was a stranger asking--she had not meant to give him another reason to blame himself, they both had more than enough of that.
When she'd pulled out these notes, she'd seen files upon files of other ones. All of the records of the important missions were kept in the same place, at least the ones that wouldn't give too much away if spies got ahold of them. It had reminded her of other choices she'd made, of other results they'd had.
How many people had she gotten killed over the last year, by doing what felt like the right thing?
Horribly, none of that mattered as much as this time. No one else mattered as much as her family had.
She was expected to save the world, but she couldn't even protect the people who mattered most to her.
"Ellana." Cullen interrupted her thoughts again.
His odd shem eyes were bright with unshed tears--for her grief, for her pain. She crawled across the strewn papers to push into his arms, uncaring if the hesitant thing between them allowed for such closeness. For now she just needed to soak up the warmth in his broad form and pretend like her world wasn't falling apart while she was tasked to keep everyone else's together.

One year for his birthday, someone leaves a chessboard for Cullen on the desk in his office. It's beautifully made with various types of wood from all over Thedas and a thin gold inlay. However, there's only one pawn and a note with no name. "King's pawn to E4." Exactly where the single white pawn sits.
He sits on it for a while as well, mulling it over throughout the day, and then decides to leave a note before he heads out for the night. "Knight to C6." The next morning, there's a black knight on C6 and a second white pawn moved into position on the board.
This continues for several weeks. Much to his disappointment, his opponent isn't able to make a move every night. He asks everyone about the gift and no one admits to it.
Sera turns her nose up at the stuffy, fancy-pants game. Bull just shrugs. Josephine smiles like she knows something but won't say. Blackwall swears it wasn't him but wishes he could take credit for the beautiful handiwork. Dorian says it isn't him, but he'd love to play on the exquisite board once his current game is finished. Not even Varric will spill. (But it sure isn't Hawke fucking with him.) Cullen even tried to trick Cole into giving it away but he was surprisingly tight-lipped.
Of course, his love swears it wasn't them. After many thorough interrogations, he believes them. Once the game ends with his loss, he gets no more notes and no more leads.
It isn't until years later when one of his new puppies eats a rook that he learns it was his sweetheart, who intended to take it to the grave. There was no way they could replace the piece and not give it away so they admit the truth.
A game is played to break in the new rook and after that, a thorough punishment.

NSB (Straud Legacy) Gen 8 Ep. 156: A Creative Crises
To make the most of his remaining family time, elder Jack happily turned his “time off” into official retirement from the spy business.
For his much younger husband though, that extra family time and arranging the complicated overthrow of the corrupt precinct leadership left very little time to practice his longstanding hobby/calling of creative comedy. Trapped between competing priorities, Peachy hit a breaking point.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
The obvious solution, of course, was to get back into comedy gigs, but he hated to lose any of his irreplaceable time with Jack or drag loving Papa Jack away from little Luigi to visit venues together. His job already kept him from his two best guys more than he liked, and so as much as he missed performing, he found it hard to justify spending even more time away from them for what was still essentially a hobby.
His creative mind threw all sorts of ideas around, including one vivid dream about running his own business selling his culinary creations. He woke up with a smile on his face, but in the light of day the avid chef quickly realized that a second job was the opposite of what he needed.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
Watching how much joy Jack found in woodworking in the backyard with their boy, Peachy tried to join him in building a treehouse, but found the project too advanced for his amateur skills. With so much to learn and hands used to paperwork and kneading dough, wood was literally too hard a medium.
Next, he tried fabric and needlepoint, which he could bring with him wherever his loved ones were. While that was easier, all the pinching and poking of his fingers, and the distraction of trying to master new skills, seemed to be a bad solution that took his attention away from those family moments.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
Finally, he had to admit that biting the bullet and scheduling some time to focus on continuing his comedic mastery was the best plan.
Jack reminded Peachy that comedy had always been part of their life together, and no one had ever asked him to give it up. As much as they loved their boy, an occasional date night event with just the two of them certainly wouldn’t be wasting the time they had together. They hit the rec room computer and picked out an open mic event on a night that super nanny Cole was available to look after Luigi for them.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
The night out and his return to making sims laugh from the stage made Peachy feel worlds better.
His old friends Noah the Strangerville lab tech and Cullen from high school showed up to support him and enjoy some adult conversation at the bar afterward. Revisiting their past gave Peachy the drive he needed to set things in motion to secure his future.
He and Jack set another date, this time to see their co-conspirators in the project to secure the precinct and bring Nancy to justice. Once they brought the Landgraab matriarch’s criminal enterprise down, peachy could leave law enforcement with a clear conscience and focus on his comedy career.

Wife had an idea for a DAI fic that we’re too lazy to write but here is the rough outline
After defeating a dragon, Lady Inquisitor Trevelyan and crew go out for drinks in the local bar. It is quite the party to the point of memories are blurred and mistakes were made by many. Afterward, they have an uneventful trip back to Skyhold. Cole greets the inquisitor, “There is 2 of you now, but the other is smaller and unaware.”
Inquisitor nods, “Nice seeing you too, Cole. There is more than two of us,” points to the others.
About 2 months later, Trevelyan finally gets Cole’s cryptic message and calls an emergency meeting with the inner circle. They meet in the war room as that is the best, most secluded place in Skyhold.
“So, you all remember the bar, after defeating the dragon. Well after many drinks, Many Drinks, I awoke in a strange bed alone. It must have been a man’s bed though. But I don’t remember him at all. So I don’t know what the baby is going be or what it’ll look like.”
Josephine steps up, “What baby, may I ask?”
Trevelyan, “my baby.”
Everyone, “What?!?!”
“Well, I didn’t bring you all here just to brag about my sex life,”
Bull, “but you can anytime you want.”
Varric, “I could take notes and use it in the next swords and shields,”
“enough!” rings out Cassandra, “You are really pregnant?”
Trevelyan nods. Cassandra sighs, annoyed, pinching the bridge of her nose before turning to the council, “Cullen, we need a full guard duty on the herald arranged now. Liliana, have your spies stop any rumor that she is pregnant. If anything, send out fake rumors to explain the herald’s absence from the front. Josephine, arrange for some of the best doctor’s in Feralden and Orlais to come to Skyhold. Inquisitor, Do you know how far along you are?”
Trevelyan laughing, “Cassandra, calm down. It’s just a baby.”
Sera, “after the dragon fight? That was 2 months ago, I think. I barely remember fighting the dragon after how much we drank.”
Trevelyan, “not helping, Sera.” But before she knew it, she was basically on lock down in Skyhold.
As she thought more about it, she reached out to Solas for help. “You have been in the fade many times. And you have travelled a lot. You know this isn’t an uncommon occurrence.”
Solas sighs, “Yes but Cassandra and Josephine are getting you the best medical minds available, you and the baby will be fine.”
“But you don’t know that. I don’t know that. And if something should happen to me, I still have to defeat Corypheus, let alone survive the labor, I need to know my child will be taken care of.”
Solas groans, “So what is your plan? Tell me again.”
Trevelyan goes on a long plan of basically pairing up everyone in the inquisition. Cassandra with Varric, Sera with Dagna, Vivienne with Blackwall, Josephine with Cullen, Dorian with The Iron Bull, Krem with Scout. There were pro and cons to every pair, and back up plans for each pair.
Cole joins in to offer his assistance, “This isn’t needed. But doing this will help the hurt in you. It may help the hurt in others.”
Trevelyan, “See, even Cole thinks this is a good idea.”
Solas, “Fine, I will help you play matchmaker to all of Skyhold. In the meantime, to help prepare you, I will consult the spirits in the fade to find things to help make your pregnancy easier.” Trevelyan hugs Solas, “thank you.”
As the months go on and the pairings slowly come together, Solas tells stories of the fade to help calm Trevelyan as she starts to get stir crazy. She is often found on the lounge in the rotunda as Solas talks. Sometimes she is awake, sometimes not. He brings list of items to Liliana and Josephine, often to create potions and salves he learned from the fade to help with pregnancy pains. Slowly over the next 5 to 6 months while scheming, getting the others together, and talking frequently Solas and Trevelyn find themselves in love and Solas actually confesses when she is going into labor.
By the time the baby arrives, everything goes smoothly, no complications. Everyone in the inner circle act as extra aunts and uncles except Solas who is now delegated as father and has to change his plans since he now has a baby to care for.
