Coheed and Cambria primer for L.S. Dunes fans
Travis Stever and Claudio Sanchez are the two core members of Coheed and Cambria and have been since the bands inception in 1999. Coheed primarily makes concept albums based on Claudio's sci-fi comic series The Amory Wars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The basic plot is that Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon are fighting against aspiring dictator Wilhelm Ryan, who started The Amory Wars with the goal to rule over the solar system Heaven’s Fence. Their son Claudio (we love a self insert) is a seemingly normal kid dragged into the fight, who may turn out to be the prophesied saviour.
"But what do they sound like?" Coheed mixes elements from a lot of genres and are most often described as prog rock. I would personally be more inclined to classify them as power metal or like, prog emo (emo used as a sort of catch all term for various pop influenced rock, metal, punk and hardcore music styles of the 00s). If you like Dunes there's definitely something in their discography you'd enjoy, especially given how similar Claudio and Anthony's vocals are.
You don't need to follow the storyline to enjoy their music though, here's a few of their more radio friendly songs I would recommend a new listener to start with:
Favor House Atlantic - every 00s band has at least one pop punk song
Ten Speed - slightly more prog influence, still pretty pop punk
Welcome Home - it's their most popular song for a reason
Shoulders - newer song, hard rock/metal vibes
Bonus: Jesse's Girl 2 ft Rick Springfield - Claudio wanted to write a sequel to Rick Springfield's 1981 classic Jesse's Girl, so he did.
If we define 'rock bands from the New York Metro area 1999-2002' as a scene, Coheed and Cambria were right there in the trenches with bands like Midtown, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday and My Chemical Romance. They were tour with these guys and most of the other "bandom" bands (The Used, Fall Out Boy, AFI etc.) and were hanging out in the background somewhere for a lot of iconic moments, like Warped 2004 (featured in LOTMS).
For example, you have probably seen a few photos of Adam and Gerard from backstage at the 2005 Concert for Tsunami Relief:

The handsome guy on the left is Claudio Sanchez ☝️
Or the 2003 Thursday/Thrice/Coheed tour which gave us some of the worlds most important images courtesy of Justin Borucki:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a roundabout way Coheed is actually responsible for giving MCR their first big break. In 2002 they were opening for Jimmy Eat World and had to cancel a show last minute, they were replaced by MCR who had only released Bullets a month prior.
Tumblr media
From Dan Ozzi's Sellout
So from what I can tell Travis has known Thursday and MCR since at least 2002 and Anthony since at least 2005 (Coheed/Thrice/Circa Survive tour). More recently Travis played with Thursday for their Signals V2 livestream (2021) and Coheed opened for MCROKC (2022).
I know I missed heaps of stuff but I hope this helps at least one Dunes fan understand Travis a little more! His connections to the band go just as deep as any of his bandmates but are a lot less straightforward.

Nu Metal MC
!silly little headcanons!
You are an MC who listens to metal, nu metal, and alternative music. Your music taste has rubbed off on the demon bros! Here's what I think they would listen to!
Lucifer
You can't tell me that Lucifer doesn't like System Of a Down. With their political, anti-war lyrics, Luci is on that like white on rice.
He claims he isn't fond of your music, but one time while walking past his study, you heard "Attack" by SOAD playing. He denies it to this day.
Asmo
He for SURE listens to the Deftones. Deftones were made for the horny bitches, and he's one of them.
He'll rub himself in front of the mirror with the Deftones playing in the background. We've all been there, I don't blame him.
Satan
He seems like a Limp Bizkit kind of man to me. He's so angry all the time, and once he heard you play Limp Bizkit near him, he wrote the band's name down on his bookmark for later.
When he's in a fit of rage he'll play a Bizkit song to help him let go of his anger. What can he say, it's just one of those days.
Mammon
He's a fan of Rage Against the Machine. He's the definition of " fuck you, I won't do what ya tell me."
He heard you play "Bulls on Parade" and that was it. If Lucifer tells him not to do something, he'll listen to Rage Against the Machine to pump himself up and do it anyway. No wonder he's always in trouble.
Beel
He is a man of good taste in food AND music. He likes Primus.
He thought they sounded kind of weird at first, but he then realized some of their songs are REALLY good to work out to. His favorite album is "Pork Soda", that's self-explanatory.
Belphie
Belphie is a Korn lover.
Belphie is a bratty one, and brats love Korn (as do I)
He heard you play " A.D.I.D.A.S" and the shit eating smirk this man had on his face makes your eyes roll just thinking about it. He'll tease you for listening to it, but for sure will jam out to it later in the attic.
Levi
He likes Coheed and Cambria due to the "viking battle" sounding music. (Best way I can describe it, but you know what I'm saying)
When he's in cosplay where swords are involved, he'll blast Coheed and pretend he's fighting a real-life boss battle in his room.
BONUS
Solomon
He's totally a Tool fan.
Fibonacci sequence ain't got nothing on him.

What kind of music do you like?
I say I have an edgy taste in music. I have moods. You can see some of the stuff I listen to on "music recs." I am bad with genre names.
-I listen to a lot of Tool, A Perfect Circle, Rishloo, Dream Theater, Caligula's Horse, Coheed & Cambria. I think the genre is called progressive rock. I think it's my go-to genre.
-I also listen to a lot of 90s bands and grungey stuff like Pearl Jam and Stabbing Westward (<- I got to see them live :'D).
-I love The Screaming Females, Kittie, Kidneythieves, Android Lust, and Garbage.
-I love Billy Talent, Tsunami Bomb, and Rise Against.
-I love the post-punk band She Past Away and got to see them live ^_^
-I like aggressive dark techno music and industrial such as Skinny Puppy(<- saw them ^_^), Dawn of Ashes, 3Teeth, Ho99o9, and Grendel.
-I love Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and The Sisters of Mercy.
-I have a Spanish rock/ska mood where I listen to the typical oldies such as Caifanes, Panteon Rococo, Salon Victoria, Molotov, Cafe Tacvba, Enanitos Verdes, Fobia, and Los Prisioneros.
-I like Cabaret Nocturne as chill background music.
-King Woman, Les Friction, Saint Mesa, The Rigs, The Epilogues, Florence + the Machine, The Amazing Devil, The Crane Wives.
-MCR will forever be dear to my heart and I know all their discography. Lol.

The Dark Sentencer, 2020.
Flashback Friday to some personal art of my OC, Evaline, from my wip novel The Soundless Sea. This painting is inspired by the Coheed and Cambria song of the same title. Some process notes/WIPs under the cut!
I don’t remember having much of an idea going into this. I think it was mostly an excuse to try photobashing a background instead of painting one. The sky and mountains are thus part-photo, part-painting and editing. The rest is painted from scratch, though judging by the WIPs I took the liberty of using photos? Textured brushes? To aid in texturing the bones. Ev’s shirt is also textured using a cloth pattern IIRC. It’s a nice example of how using textures/photos can really enhance an artwork, without stealing anything from the painting itself. I used to over-use photo textures pretty badly. These days I rarely incorporate them, aside from noise/canvas textures, but when I do I have learnt that less is definitely more.
The rest of the process is pretty straight-forward painting, coming up with ideas as I go along. Using a lot of textured brushes on whatever the fuck that skull spider thing is, to aid in the realism. It’s still one of my favourite personal pieces. It also won an art award at my old university (where I studied psychology, not art, go figure). The crowning achievement of my life thus far was hearing the vice-chancellor of the university quote the title of a Coheed and Cambria song. I don’t have many life achievements.
Anyway I’m not sure if this write-up has been helpful at all, or just me rambling nonsense, but without further ado here are some wips.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At some point I had to literally split the image into separate foreground and background PSDs and combine them at the end because my poor computer was struggling (I sometimes end up with a hundred or more layers) so here is a wip of the background by itself:

L.S. Dunes: Travis Stever’s yang to Frank Iero’s yin
Words by Ellie Robinson Photo by Mark Beemer November 17, 2022
Tumblr media
Travis Stever talks a lot.
That’s not an insult – the 43-year-old New Jerseyan just has a lot to say, and virtually all of it is fantastic. He’s impressively storied: most would know him as the lead guitarist in Coheed And Cambria, but he’s popped his head through many a musical window over some three decades: side-projects include Fire Deuce, The English Panther, Davenport Cabinet and Zero Trust (per Wikipedia, but I’m certain there’s more out there), and he also played lap-steel on My Brother’s Blood Machine, the 2006 debut from The Prize Fighter Inferno, the solo folktronica project of Coheed frontman Claudio Sanchez.
Stever’s latest project is L.S. Dunes, a post-hardcore supergroup* I can only accurately describe as “every mid-to-late 2000s emo fan’s wildest pipe-dream come true”. Stever plays guitar alongside Frank Iero (of My Chemical Romance, and his own mountain of side-projects), while Anthony Green (Circa Survive, Saosin) sings, Tim Payne (Thursday) plays bass, and Tucker Rule (also Thursday, but for a short time, Yellowcard too) plays drums. I write “supergroup” with an asterisk because although L.S. Dunes are a supergroup, etymologically, when I interviewed Stever for Australian Guitar #151, he fucking hated that I called them one.
Nevertheless, we got along like a house on fire, and I had a blast chatting with him about his new band and their debut album, Past Lives (out now on Fantasy Records). It was hard not to be engaged with everything he said: watching him wax lyrical about his impenetrable love for music, even over Zoom with our video link presenting him at approximately three pixels per inch, the glimmer in his eyes and wideness of his smile made it clear, Stever is living his dream. He’s just a kid that fell in love with rock ‘n’ roll, started jamming out for the hell of it – not to make bank, but simply because it was fun – and somewhere along the way, wound up turning it into his full-time gig (no pun intended).
It doesn’t seem to have gotten any less fun for him since then, either. Usually artists with careers as weighty as his appear at least a little burnt out on the music industry. You can tell when someone’s passion is genuine, and Stever’s certainly is.
The proof in the pudding, for me, was just how goddamn much Stever had to say about any and every topic. Our interview in Australian Guitar #151, spanning five questions across a hair over 1,000 words, was cut down from a transcript about four times as long. His unedited answers to those questions ran a solid 600-850 words apiece – well over 1,000 for the first – and there were still a few topics that we had to shave off for page space. One of those was actually my favourite from the entire chat: the creative chemistry that L.S. Dunes unlocked between Stever and Iero.
I opted not to run with that in the printed story because what did make it to the page is a lot more relevant to the origin story of L.S. Dunes and how that led to Past Lives shaping up in the way it did – which is ultimately the story I wanted to centre. But I think what Stever said about his creative dynamic with Iero – and how they each pushed the other to venture outside their comfort zones – adds a lot to the narrative surrounding L.S. Dunes. It also adds a twinge of contextual colour to songs like ‘Blender’ and ‘Sleep Cult’, which makes for a more gratifying listen when you really stop to soak in and digest Past Lives.
Ultimately, I think one of the coolest things about the “supergroup” concept is how idiosyncrasy can germinate when two artists of similar mind collaborate. Both Stever and Iero come from backgrounds of punk, rock and post-hardcore – even if their writing and playing styles are quite dissimilar – but when they joined forces to form L.S. Dunes, they started writing music that neither ever thought they would. And that’s so fucking cool.
So below is Stever’s commentary on his chemistry with Iero, as well as a couple of other offcuts from my interview with him. I’ve included those as well because at a base level, as a fan of music at the end of the day, I love reading about my favourite artists’ plans for the future – even if they never come to fruition – and about how they feel in the lead-up to a major release. I know that latter topic is now entirely irrelevant, because Past Lives came out a week ago, but, like, fuck it, it’s my blog, I make the rules.
You should read the Australian Guitar piece before you hit the jump, because it offers some solid context on exactly what L.S. Dunes is, how their collective ethos plays into everything, and why Stever and I were even talking to each other in the first place – and because the latter two of the three questions here were asked after the ones printed in AG, and some lines might be a bit confusing without that context.
So we’re about a month away from getting our hands on Past Lives. How does it feel to be here in the home stretch? You know, you’re always going to feel a little on edge when you’re about to release something that you poured your heart and soul into, no matter how much you believe in it. It’s exciting, but at the same time, you can feel the the vibes of danger – the danger of exposing the art that you created with your brothers, you know? And knowing that people are going to judge it. But that’s the gig, right. That’s the game. You know people are going to receive it however they choose to – but I’ve gotten nothing but positive feedback from everybody I’ve showed it to, so that’s a good sign!
Being the two guitarists in L.S. Dunes, how did you and Frank coalesce in the creative process? It goes back to what I was saying before, how there was no expectation. It’s really intriguing, because we communicate with each other through the guitars. And we were doing it over streams, online, through email [and] text – and we just knew, as soon as we started sending each other ideas, that it was going to work. And then, you know, it was just as relieving to get into an actual room together and be able to know that the spark was there [in real life], too.
I’ve got to be honest, after working with Frank [on this record], I had to go back and revisit a lot of the things he did in My Chem, and even a lot of his solo stuff – not that I didn’t fully respect everything he does before, but you know, after you see a person in a new light, you understand their musical language more. And I am so honoured to be in this band with him. He comes up with these riffs that are completely different from anything I’ve ever heard before. They’re all over the map – because you can say, “Oh, he comes up with these, really awesome, like, edgy punk riffs,” but that’s not true.
There’s a song at the end of the album that he wrote, ‘Sleep Cult’, where Anthony’s vocals almost have a doo-wop kind of feel. Frank had written that chord progression – that fingerpicking kind of thing – and I heard it while I was working on other guitars; we were in pre-production, getting ready to go over to Will Yip’s, and it was at the end of the session, we’d been working all day, and all of a sudden, he started playing this really beautiful chord progression. And so we recorded that, just as a rough little idea, but we wound up rolling with it. I just added some lap steel and some really delicate chords to it, just to give it a little nuance.
There are numerous parts on the album like that, which I think are probably the best parts of it. Another one that started out with Frank – which is probably my favourite [track] on the album right now – is ‘Blender’. I don’t want to get too dorky about it, but you know, that song is a really good example of what it was like to work with him. I sent him the guitar parts, and he really liked them – I think he was already fine and excited with everything I’d laid down… Because you know, that can always be a touchy thing. I mean, he pretty much had a hole-in-one with the ideas I would send him, and I always loved what he was playing – but I was open to him switching whatever he wanted.
In this case, I had written all the guitars that I was going to play, which was based on what he was playing and what Tim was playing. There were no vocals yet. And I’m so glad that we took our time with that song, because at the very last minute, I just switched it up completely, and I wound up harmonising a lot of the guitars [Frank] was playing instead. It was a completely different approach. That’s one of the things I loved about working on this record – the amount of time we were able to take to really think about it.
I’m not going to speak for Frank, but I think he was probably able to step out of his comfort zone [on this record]. Because there’s things he played on it where someone would probably be like, “Wow, I’ve never heard him play like that!” And for me, that feels really special because I got to [work with him] on those songs. And the same goes for me – there are a lot of [parts] on the record that are very different to [the parts] I would usually write.
We’ve already gone way over time, but I want to wrap up by looking to the future: what are your plans for Australia, and what’s the vibe on a second L.S. Dunes album? Believe me, we want to tour everywhere we can. I can only hope that we’re able to bring [L.S. Dunes] over to Australia – that would be amazing. As for other material… I mean, like I said, there’s just been an endless flow of material. There’s no shortage of stuff that we’ve been sending back and forth, and we already have a lot of surprises up our sleeves. But I just want to pay my respects to the album we’ve already created before we move on to the next thing, you know? I think it’s important that we get out there and show people what we can do on the live end… When everybody’s able to! And if we were able to bring that over there to Australia… I mean, yeah, of course we will!

Alright yall it's time to bake a cake for Jay! He's old like me now. I figured I'd post a step by step because I'm trying something a little experimental based on a nifty cake I saw on instagram:
Tumblr media
I don't really do cheesecake so I asked Jay what flavors he wanted and he voted for banana and strawberry. So this is going to be a Strawberry Banana Lemonade Cake! Time for ADHD baking with Sin.
Step one is to make the cake!! Here's what you need:
Tumblr media
The box mix called for 3 eggs, 1/2 c of oil and 1 c water. I'm doctoring it and doing 4 eggs, 1/2 c of melted butter, and whole milk instead of water. I also like to add almond extract to my "vanilla" cakes because it makes it taste amazing. Most people will say to "be sparing" with almond extract but fuck those people.
Turn on some Coheed and Cambria and preheat your oven to 350°F. Prep your baking pans.
I also just realized I need to soften 1 1/2 c butter for my buttercream so lemme go ahead and get that out lmao.
Ok back to pan prep. Butter and flour was good enough for my Granny, and it's good enough for me. I've never had a cake stick using this method.
Two 9" baking pans ready to go!
Tumblr media
My biggest tips for melting butter include cutting it is into cubes and microwaving on 30% heat for a minute at a time til it's all nice and liquidy. Also, cover your bowl or whatever it's in unless you want to have to clean that up later. I am very smart and have definitely never made that mistake.
Throw it all together and mix. I smelled the box mix and it seemed very sad so I added some vanilla on top of the almond extract and it tastes goooood.
Normally I weigh the bowl and try to get an even amount in both pans using a food scale. Today I forgot to do that! So we're doing our best out here. Fortunately for me somehow my baking pans weigh exactly the same so I was able to get roughly 455g in each pan.
Tumblr media
Into the oven! I had to dig the instructions out of the trash lmao. 350°F for 30 minutes and we'll see where we're at after that.
While those are baking, time to prep some other components. I went ahead and washed my mixing bowl for later because I am not a fancy person and only have the one. Also cubed my butter for the buttercream and set it aside.
TIME TO MAKE A STRAWBERRY SIMPLE SYRUP!!
I stole this recipe off of Pinterest (Strawberry Simple Syrup Recipe). It's basically 2 cups of strawberries (I'm using frozen), 2 cups of sugar, and 2 cups of water. I added a teeny tiny splash of lemon juice... because of course I did! Lemon tends to just kind of brighten up and make the strawberries taste more strawberry... strawberry-y. As long as you don't overdo it.
Tumblr media
Side note holy balls the cakes smell SO GOOD.
The recipe said to smash the strawberries with a spoon but I got frustrated very quickly and broke out the potato masher. Works great.
CAKES ARE DONE!
Tumblr media
Just gonna let those bitches cool for a bit. And also turn off the oven because it's hotter than hell outside!
Halfway through with the strawberries and they look like a fruity stew.
Tumblr media
I've learned over the years that getting a still-warm cake out of a pan is much easier than a fully cooled one so here we go.
Tumblr media
Other than being weirdly browned, they look great lol. Also don't mind the crackers in the background. Sometimes you need a snack when baking.
Time to strain some strawberry soup! I have a very technical straining method:
Tumblr media
It turned out so pretty and red!
Tumblr media
Alrighty. I can't do much now til the cakes and the syrup both cool down a bit. See you in part 2!

Top 10 instrumental songs. Go!
Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, okay... let me try this. Also, sorry if you meant like JUST ~real instruments and no electronic stuff included. I did try going more instrument-sounding and not just pure synthization, so like "Strobe" by Deadmau5 isn't here despite me loving the track. But like... there are things are are clearly synthetic here. Sorry. Was tempted to put "Sandstorm" by Darude anyways. Or cheat and put instrumental versions of songs, like "Every Night" by Exid which does actually have a really fun vocal-less version (if you don't mind being alarmed by a dial tone sound).
God, I know it's cheap to go for this song of all Ryuichi Sakamato songs but it's the first I ever heard by him (thanks Utada) and so... "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence." Achingly, deceptively simple-sounding. It conveys both aching and urgency.
"Your Hand in Mine" Explosions in the Sky. I use the term "cinematic" to describe music a lot but I think it really fits here. Like this is a track that plays during the trailer for an indie movie that blows everyone's tits off.
"Tocatta & Fugue in D Minor" specifically by Vanessa Mae. Her violin plus the more electronic sensibilities really feels electrifying.
"Viridis Quo" by Daft Punk. Galactic, otherworldly, a beat that syncs into your bones and rests behind your eyes.
"Sadness & Sorrow" from Naruto. It is sadness and it IS sorrow! Iconic.I couldn't find who originally performed the song? SHould look deeper for that. Guren by Yasuharu Takanashi is also a great, haunting track from the Naruto OST.
"Keeping the Blade" by Coheed & Cambria. Haunting. Feels like witnessing a forbidden love story and watching them fight to stay together. Without any words spoken.
"Wu Ji" by Lin Hai. All versions. Yes, it is from the Untamed. And yes it is beautiful!
"Ego Death" by Polyphia. Very different from other tracks on my list, this is guitar shredding. This is drum kits. This is bad ass.
"Aruarian Dance" by Nujabes. Would be wrong to not include Nujabes when his music was so... instrumental to my taste in music.
"Khun" by Kevin Penkin & Ben Matthews. Kick ass jazzy piano with a great overlay of... grainy (?) sound.
"Always You" by Malta. Great jazzy sound. Couldn't think of a song to kick off this list but needed to include this one.
I feel like a lot of these aren't really what people mean when tehy ask for instrumental? They normally mean more like... Yann Tiersen but my instrumental go tos are more Toconoma or like... the sims soundtrack. Or electronic fare like She.
If you were looking for instrumental music to put on while you write/study, maybe listen to the Imogen Heap collab album "Chordata Bytes." Or even the Tron: Legacy soundtrack by Daft Punk. They're kinda non-intrusive instrumentals, while Polyphia might be more distracting. Or try "Sharratt" by Bibio! I find songs with a ~looping sound, lots of repetition, are good for like taking over the background while you work.

Three
So, waaaaay back in the day I got dragged to an "emo" show with a girl I was dating at the time and wound up liking the opening band way more than I expected to.
Asked her who they were and she didn't know or care.
Bummer.
Wound up forgetting all about it until a couple years later when I woke up with one of the riffs from that show stuck in my head and wound up spending absolute ages trying to find any clue at all as to who the band might have been, but the only thing I could ever remember about them beside that one riff was that they had a guitarist who did a lot of weird, proggy, percussive tapping on an electric acoustic guitar and that they just generally kinda sounded like someone threw Rush, Yes, Fate's Warning, Genesis, King Crimson, and Van Der Graaf Generator in a blender with maybe just a splash of something like Coheed and Cambria.
It wasn't much to go on, and the search never yielded any results.
Eventually years passed and I forgot all about them again.
So it goes...
Well, flash forward to almost 20 years after that show and I'm on a wicked prog kick... Listening to music in the background as I'm working on other shit when, holy FUCK, Spotify pops the mystery song up at random right after a King Crimson album I was listening to ended.
Turns out it was the track "Wake Pig" by a band called Three and it's just about as cool and weird as I remember it being.
So stoked to have finally found them.
