DID NOT DIE IN VAIN -- 'TWAS ONCE A BELOVED PET AS WELL.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a real-life, and former "canary in the coalmine," inscribed with the legend: "In Memory of Little Joe. Died November 3rd 1875. Aged 3 Years."
OVERVIEW: "19th century coal miners would traditionally take canaries in cages down into the mine with them. The birds would act as an early warning system for carbon monoxide gas. When the canary stopped singing the miner would know that he had to escape the chamber he was in. This particular yellow canary was obviously a favoured pet as well as a working bird."

Kopalnia Węgla Brunatnego Bełchatów i Elektrownia Bełchatów
Odkrycie węgla brunatnego w regionie bełchatowskim nastąpiło w grudniu 1960 roku. Wydobycie pierwszych ton węgla miało miejsce 19 listopada 1980 roku. Projektowaną zdolność wydobywczą 38,5 mln ton rocznie kopalnia osiągnęła w 1988 roku.
Głównym odbiorcą węgla z kopalni jest Elektrownia Bełchatów - największa w Europie elektrownia węglowa. Produkuje około 20% energii elektrycznej w Polsce. Emituje najwięcej gazów cieplarnianych spośród wszystkich elektrowni świata.

Bełchatów Power Plant, Poland
Brown coal was discovered in the Bełchatów region in December 1960. The first tons of coal were extracted on November 19, 1980. The mine achieved its planned mining capacity of 38.5 million tons per year in 1988.
The main recipient of coal from the mine is the Bełchatów Power Plant - the largest coal-fired power plant in Europe. It produces about 20% of electricity in Poland.

A man has revealed why he got a “unique” tattoo of a Fife coal mine tower on his leg. Kilmarnock's Jack Jones got the unusual body art because it reminded him of his childhood holidays in the Kingdom. The Mary Pit Head winding structure at Lochore Meadows Country Park is the subject of this tattoo. Jack, 32 years old, spent many holidays under...

Coal and Energy Security
Tumblr media
India plans to reduce emission intensity of GDP by 45% and aims at generating 500 GW of Renewable Energy from installed capacity by 2030. But India’s energy security has to be met from external sources as more than 85% of petroleum requirements are still imported.  Coal, by installed capacity, till date generates 50% of the electricity in India. And 10% of India’s coal is imported. Along with meeting the climate change goals of the future, we may have to generate electricity from coal for the next 2 decades unless there is a new discovery of energy sources or some innovative development in the energy sector in India. The continual integration of renewable energy plants poses grid challenges and hence we have to rely on conventional sources to meet the energy deficits created by intermittent generation . Though we have provided must run status to renewable energy based generations, we should consider life cycle emission of these power plants before planning the phasing out of coal-based generation. Moreover to take the share of renewables from 42%+ to 70%+ would take time.  However a switch from coal to natural gas reduces emission intensity by half while keeping the energy security intact. And this may help our future planning.

101 Things You Should Know About the UK Tory Government
Thing 87
Sunak’s ministerial appointments have been besmirched by underlying scandal’s just waiting to surface. From tax avoidance to bullying, Sunak has been accused of neglect and weakness when appointing key personnel to his government.
Nadhim Zahawi, Dominic Raab, Gavin Williamson and Suella Braverman are the well-known faces of this sorry sordid story but there are others.
Rishi Sunak appointed Graham Stuart as Minister of State in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on 6 September 2022. Mr Stuart’s responsibilities, amongst others, include,
Net Zero Strategy, low carbon generation, international climate and climate change, electricity and gas wholesale markets, electricity and gas retail markets and green finance.
It is therefore very disturbing to learn that Stuart has recently made headlines by claiming that not all fossil fuels are the “spawn of the devil” and that issuing new oil and gas exploration licences was “good for the environment". He also supports opening up new coalmines.
As if that were not bad enough, it has now emerged that:
“…in 2019, Stuart received a £10,000 donation towards his re-election campaign from JR Rix & Sons, a Hull-based business primarily involved in the distribution and sale of fuel, including heating oil, diesel and petrol."  (Guardian: 26/01/23)
Caroline Lucas, Green Party MP for Brighton Pavillion is reported by the Guardian to have said:
“For dirty fossil fuel cash to go directly into the pockets of ministers, who then greenlight new oil & gas licences and a climate-wrecking coalmine, is nothing short of a scandal – and it will be the public and our planet paying the price. If Stuart doesn’t recognise this glaring conflict of interest, he shouldn’t be in the job."
Is there anyone in Rishi Sunak’s government who isn’t tainted with the stench of scandal?

At least 41 individuals have died and many more have been injured following a coal mine explosion in Turkey, officials in the country stated.
The blast occurred late Friday in the northern Turkish town of Amasra, on the coast of the Black Sea. A report from Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, per BBC News, stated that a minimum of 11 individuals have been injured and transported to area hospitals. One of these victims was later discharged.
At least 58 individuals working in the mine when the blast went off have been able to flee without harm, either from escaping themselves or being rescued. A total of 110 individuals had been in the mine when the accident occurred, BBC News reported, with at least half of them at a depth of almost 1,000 feet.
Emergency crews worked through the night into Saturday morning to continue and rescue survivors, as family and friends of those trapped reportedly started arriving at the mine awaiting news. The Associated Press reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived at the scene just as a 41st victim was pulled from the rubble.
“We don’t want to see deficiencies or unnecessary risks,” Erdogan stated, adding that an investigation into the explosion would quickly get underway.
BBC News reported that it was suspected the explosion was brought on by a flammable mixture of gasses that became trapped in the mine.
The worst mining disaster in Turkish history occurred in the town of Soma in 2014, when 301 individuals died in a blast.

Delighted to share that this photograph has been shortlisted for the British Photography Awards 2022. It’s one of three shortlisted images, spanning my photojournalistic work as well as my creative product photography, specialising in writing instruments. Alongside the judged categories, there is also a a public vote, which helps choose the separate People’s Choice Awards winners. I’d appreciate it tremendously if you would pop over to the shortlisted images of 2022 and cast your vote (it’s a single click. Links are on my blog post, via biog); thank you :) CAPTION: Shift Manager Miner Colin Evans, who has been a miner for 40 years, prepares the paperwork for the shift.
