The Clownverse:

This is just the very basics of my clownverse. Future world building will come soon.

Nonclowns are not yet covered in this post

True Clowns:

Originated from earth

Fully sapient and sentient (the same as a human)

Lack ears, but do have hearing organs

Only have 4 fingers (including the thumb)

The average height is between 5 and 7 feet

Always bright and colorful and has a happy demeanor

Always extroverted and kind

No specific breeds, just varying color schemes and general themes

Their skin markings are their pigment, not makeup

Eye colors are similar to that of humans, with the exception of violet

Humanoid figure, does not move on all fours

Has blunted teeth but sharper cuspids than humans

They honk to communicate, which is a language in and of itself

Clowns can learn any language just like a human

Pet Clowns:

Originated from earth

Fully sentient, similar to that of a house pet like a dog

Have ears, unlike true Clowns

Can have anywhere from 2 to 6 fingers (including the thumb, or lack thereof)

Size varies wildly from clowns that are inches tall, all the way to 8ft giants

Breeds very heavily from clown to clown

Bred for specific traits, looks, personalities, and performing

Their skin markings are also their skin pigment, although some clowns lack markings all together, and owners opt to paint their faces

Eye color can be anything in the ROYGBIV spectrum (yellow/orange are uncommon, though)

Generally humanoid figure but has the ability to move on all fours

Teeth and oral anatomy vary depending on the breed

Can speak but generally will just repeat phrases like a parrot does

They have the ability to honk and squeak to communicate with other pet clowns. This is not a true language and is just tonal, comparable to dogs

Cosmic Clowns:

They come from deep space or other planets

Fully sapient and sentient, some all-knowing

They mimic both pet clowns and true clowns

Some wear makeup, and some mimic the facial markings of clowns

Teeth are usually very, very sharp

Can be hostile or peaceful

Eye color is always bright orange/yellow

Mimics the humanoid form but doesn't always move properly

Has the ability to physically morph in unnatural ways

They can speak any language, some even speak in tongues

Mostly live underground in areas of low population

So basically, True Clowns evolved alongside humans, whereas Pet Clowns evolved similar to the way monkeys did. Cosmic Clowns are a whole other thing entirely.

The Clownverse: All about True Clowns

[A general overview of True Clown Culture]

True Clowns started off in humid/temperate climates and have spread to most places around the world. They mainly stick to anywhere warm as they need optimal areas to perform.

Performances came about as an offshoot of mating dances. These slowly became general entertainment. This can be anything from acrobatics to juggling and even tumbling.

Because many live in warmer climates, thick outfits that require multiple layers have been phased out in the modern day. These thicker outfits once symbolized status but now are relics of the past. some opt to keep and preserve the outfits as they've been passed down through the generations.

Ruffle neck collars, gloves, and puffballs/buttons are still a staple in many looks

A lack of ears means they also do not wear traditional glasses

True Clowns have a language all their own. The following phrases are a sample of their language. Keep in mind these phrases are made using their vocal cords, not physical instruments.

Honk, short and friendly 》”hello” Honk, long and excited 》 “hello friend!!!” Honk, short and simple 》 “Yes” Scoff or hiss》 “No” Hiss, high intensity 》 “go away/get away from me” Small trumpet 》 “Bye” Honk, small trumpet 》 “follow me” Trumpet 》 “over here/there” Trumpet, long 》 “watch me/this!”

Bright, vibrant colors are of high value in clown society. In the old days, the brightest colors would attract a mate the best. This value has been carried through their people. Along with the value of these bright colors, there is also a set of laws all clowns abide by, less they be shunned.

No adult themes may be displayed in public performances

Swearing, alcohol and any illicit substance is strictly forbidden

Hateful actions towards other clowns are not tolerated (including physical violence)

These things have created multiple counterculture movements among the community. Underground clubs are not unheard of if you look in the right places. The clowns that frequent these clubs are often times shunned by the wider community.

• clowns show no bare skin, covering it with clothing, makeup and other. this is necessary, as bare clown skin is unfit for exposure and is easily irritated and will start shedding to create a barrier, forming something resembling clothes; however, that is not good for general clown health

• clowns hatch from eggs. clown babies have the eggshell as their first outfit

• clowns, being so bright and colorful, are deadly poisonous to most creatures around them. even contact with their bare skin might leave a nasty chemical burn; this is another reason to cover skin at all times, as different clown sub-species might not be immune to each other poisons

• clowns are omnivorous, with different species having a varied diet; however, all of them have a love for monosaccarides (glucose, fructose, etc) and carbohydrates in general. they also might crave mineral rocks to gather chemicals needed to produce pigments

• clown clothing is a biological part of them, and can be impacted by diet, stress, etc
