Clone Trooper Rambles
Today’s journal/creative writing practice. As always, featuring a bunch of clone troopers who inexplicably roast me for no reason.
Captains, Again
“Why is everyone dressed like that?” Hound asked, gaze critical.
“This movie is set a few hundred years ago in Earth’s history,” I answered, glad it was a slow point in the film, plot-wise. “The basics are that England had colonies everywhere and the colonies were held by military power. However, the militaries and merchants traveled only by ships and the guns took forever to reload, so many ships were vulnerable to attacks. Pirates took advantage of this and preyed on ships and cargo as they crossed the ocean.”
“So, like Hondo Ohnaka?” Rex crinkled his nose in distaste.
“Yeah, pretty much,” I admitted, feeling more than a little stupid for failing to draw a correlation between ocean piracy and space piracy. It would have been a much shorter explanation.
As Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl progressed, the gathered group of troopers continued to draw correlations that I hadn’t. But they didn’t always focus on the plot. Eventually, the conversation turned to certain connections and their implications, which is a fancy way of saying that most of the points went as follows:
“Hondo is definitely Captain Jack Sparrow,” Tup said, glancing around the room for support.
“Obviously,” Crosshair snorted. “But who else is which character?”
“General Kenobi is most like Commodore Norrington,” Echo suggested.
“Then who would be Elizabeth?” Jesse asked, swatting at Tup’s hand as the younger clone tried to steal some of Jesse’s mountain of snacks.
“No one. Jedi can’t have attachments, remember?” Boss said imperiously.
Sinker nodded in agreement. “But Grievous is definitely Barbossa!”
I tried not to frown at that, thinking about Barbossa’s redemption in later installments of the franchise. Not super in line with Grievous, but I didn’t want to explain that and ruin a pretty major character arc. Despite my best efforts, the bit of the sentiment that came through anyway drew the attention of some of the troopers.
“What’s wrong?” Rex asked, eyeing my expression.
“Sinker is and she knows it,” Wooley told him, interrupting his own heated conversation with Boost. “Dooku is clearly Barbossa.”
“Don’t be a di’kut,” Wrecker reprimanded, half-emerging from his typical nest of blankets to make his point. “Dooku would never work that closely with his own men.”
The trooper dissolved into shouts of laughter at Wrecker’s comment and I couldn’t fight back a grin of my own.
“Aw, don’t worry about her,” Sinker said with a smirk that immediately warned me that he was going to say something sassy. “She’s just upset that we’re comparing Hondo and Jack Sparrow.”
There was a trap there, I knew there was, but I still had to ask: “Why would I be upset about that? It’s the funniest thing you guys have said all day.”
That caused some good-natured grumbling from the troopers who thought they were comedic geniuses, but my attention was fixed on Sinker, whose triumphant expression had stretched even wider.
With more than a bit of relish in his voice, he said, “Because you have a thing for captains. I heard all about it from Thire.”
“Shut up, I do not,” I told him immediately, but everyone was already gone.
Troopers were howling with laughter, Cody even slapping Rex on the shoulder in teasing congratulations while Fives and Scorch complained that officers had all the luck.
“Wait,” Echo said loudly, halting the chaos for a moment. For that alone, he had earned my eternal gratitude. “If that were true, she wouldn’t be bothered by the comparison since Hondo is a captain, too. Logically, she can’t have a thing about all captains, because she doesn’t like Hondo.”
I mentally took back all of the nice things I had just thought about Echo. This was going to go from bad to worse in three… two…
“Echo, haven’t you seen it?” Jesse asked gleefully.
Tup guffawed, pointing into the kitchen. “Look behind you, vod!”
Echo turned around and I could see the moment his eyes landed on the small Hondo Ohnaka Pop figure, brought home from a visit to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. I had thought it was unobtrusive, tucked away into the small gap between the top of a cabinet and the ceiling just above it, but of course the troopers had seen it.
The laughter was deafening then. Despite how many times I tried to explain that the tiny pirate bobblehead belonged to my roommate Elena, my voice was lost to the teasing tide, and I just turned my attention back to the film.
