Second bird inspiration book idea:
Pygmy Falcons in the Kalahari Desert are allowed to stay near the Cliff Swallows nests even though they occasionally eat the swallow babies because they will also defend the nest from other predators.
So like, the Cliff Swallows will willingly let the Falcon stay and sacrifice some of their young to protect the rest.

BOTD: Cliff Swallow
Tumblr media
Photo: Becky Matsubara
"This swallow is probably far more common today than when the Pilgrims landed. Originally it built its jug-shaped mud nests on the sides of cliffs. However, the sides of barns and the supports of bridges provided sheltered sites that were far more widespread than the natural ones. Taking advantage of these artificial locations, the species has invaded many areas where it never nested before. Although it is continuing to spread in the east, it is still more common in the west, where practically every culvert and highway bridge seems to have its own Cliff Swallow colony."

so netflix have just gone ahead and confirmed their absolutely ridiculous aversion to letting interesting, creative, original shows carry on past the first season.
what they've just done is dug their own grave, and started a vicious cycle whereby people will be much, much more hesitant to watch new shows because there is no guarantee (hell, it's in fact unlikely) that it will get renewed and these stories will come to completion or get to continue past the limitations of a single series.
this reluctance will lead to lower viewing numbers, ones that, say, will not "meet the threshold to greenlight a second season". and on those grounds they won't renew the shows, meaning they'll have to either lower said threshold, or netflix will become nothing more than a wasteland of discarded shows that had the potential to be so much more.
for a streaming service that continues to lose hundreds of thousands of subscribers in each quarter, and when it comes to changing this claims to believe "the key is pleasing members", they are doing an atrocious job of pleasing members who have voiced their support for certain shows again, and again, only to be faced with more disappointment.
