Only in the last decade or so have there been any serious attempts to understand the origins of knitting. While the earliest extant examples of knitting all come from Egypt around 1000CE, the craft is certainly than that.

Archaeologist Claudia Sagona published "Two-needle knitting and cross-knit looping: early bronze age pottery imprints from anatolia and the caucasus" in the August 2018 issue of the Oxford Journal of Archaeology. In the article, she describes cloth imprints left as part of the creation process in Bronze Age clay pots found in modern day Turkey and Georgia. Some of these imprints (such as the one seen in the first image, dated to 3500 BCE) appears to have been made by two-needle knitted fabric worked in alternating rows of knit and purl at the gauge of 6 stitches per centimeter (15 stitches to the inch).

The second image shows the author's attempts to recreate the pattern in clay. The left example is done in knitting, the right in nailbinding. Nailbinding has long been believed to be the older of the two crafts and the finished products can look similar to unpracticed eyes. From this comparison, the imprint in the Bronze Age pot appears to indeed be knitted.

This imprint still leaves many questions - what the yarn was made of, for example, and whether the knitting was done flat or in the round - but it helps us come a little closer to understanding where and when knitting was developed.
