A lot of them feel like another show with SM characters randomly in them #which is not a good thing necessarily but they're so interesting it's also not a bad thing. It's just a thing #which you don't really see as often with current anime #you can just really see how they were kind of taking a gamble with Sailor Moon and testing the waters to see what angles would do well #I think it started to understand its actual target audience at around the Rainbow Crystals arc and shifted focus there #which is also when Jupes arrived so the team dynamic really started to take hold & the true appeal of it as a Magical Girl codifier emerged #ANYWAY it was just interesting to note that while Sailor Moon could consistently achieve moodiness and tension visually #the WAYS they achieved that were pretty different in the first half of classic compared to any other season #HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! Familiarize yourself more w the genre really, that's like where a lot of ppl end up going wrong where they don't... interact with mg beyond Sailor Moon and even then, they also haven't really watched Sailor Moon recently. Like if Sailor Moon is your jam you gotta go and refresh your memory on the themes and story beats. But also watching multiple types of shows to see what the stories have in common beyond "they transform" because henshin heroes are a whole separate thing that encompasses more than just MG lol

Like a lot of people have the idea that all MG is similar in tone to just the most lighthearted and goofy moments of the silliest Precure seasons, even if they never actually watched Precure, which is why we have so many people r consistently surprised that Sailor Moon had any kind of stakes in it lol

Or same with Madoka which is an even worse scenario imo because its a MG series written by someone who wasn't familiar with the genre either, it's like copying someone's math exam when math is that persons worst subject. You're not gonna understand how they got the right answer or how they messed up on the wrong ones yk?

I think watching some more "classic" shows is a good way to get an idea of how the genre started out, if you want some magic idols you should be more familiar with Creamy Mami at least a little, but the ~classics~ aren't like the end all be all of the genre lol. And I think also being more familiar with influencial non-mg franchises is a good thing... like, henshin heroes is where I'm most invested and a lot of MG warriors are basically Girl Sentai. but it's not just Sentai that has had any kind of influence on that sub-genre, like. the Sentai Formula for fights is generally, we get a funky themed general who fucks everything up for the episode, the heroes defeat him, and then he gets really big and the heroes use their mech to defeat him for good.

Some MG has the like ridiculous themed kaijin villains and MOTW, like SM and Wedding Peach and early Precure definitely has a more sentai-like vibe.

but they don't do the "get big and die from being blown up by a mech" thing in mg lol. But then some shows have the girls basically fighting kaiju which feels more like it's taking cues from Ultraman to me.

And some seasons like Heartcatch and Happiness Charge have these like, little underling villains that give "Kamen Rider Grunt"

Straight up these are just the same type of guy.

I don't think watching a ton of Godzilla films will teach you the hidden intricacies of the MG genre but it will give you an idea of what a lot of writers probably have in mind when they make up monsters lol

Knowing how the actual genre works FIRST though, is going to do way better for people getting any kind of "magical girl vibes" from your story. a lot of these stories don't feel like MG bc the writers don't know the genre, and I feel like that's also how US stories end up just so different (not necesarily in a bad way), or only ever referencing SM. VS like, Italy where these stories were way more consistently available and easily accessible. Compare like, She-ra and Star Vs to like, Winx and WITCH lmao. like, in the US only the nerdiest of nerd girls were out here watching mermaid melody. we only got a handful of shows and half them never got finished lmao

Hi~ if you're interested, here's a scenario for you:

While talking with an acquaintance, the conversation drifts into the topic of anime since they learn you've watched quite a few shows already. They ask you for recommendations and, when pressed for specifics, they say something along the lines of "I don't really have a specific preference." (This is, of course, untrue—everyone has their yays and nays, and maybe this person just doesn't know theirs. Since they're just an acquaintance, you probably wouldn't know either.)

So as you look into their gleaming curious eyes:

What will you consider before giving a recommendation(s)?

What show(s) would you recommend?

(Note: this is entirely for funsies so please feel free to opt out or to take your time! ☺)

Damn this is like my worst nightmare come true 😂 It's so hard to give recommandation because it depends on one's personal taste, but also a person's state of mind (if you don't want to watch a drama because you're not in the mood for it, you won't want to watch a show even if it's the greatest drama ever produced), openess to new experiences, and tolerance to bullshit such as 2nd hand embarrassment/fanservice/anime grunts/etc.

I'm basing this a lot on the weeb/ass/shit scale, which grades anime by the amount of anime/japanese culture knowledge needed to enjoy it, the amount of fanservice, and its overall quality. But within each tier, you could probably create subtiers (genre subtier, trope subtier, music subtier, etc,).

To note: a lot of the recs are series I watched recently or remember at the top of my mind, so there's this bias to consider.

Depending on how well I know my acquaintance and their tastes, I would go like this:

entry level. something which is easily accessed and understood by most people with minimal (to none) anime/Japan culture knowledge: most if not all Studio Ghibli movies, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, maybe Inuyasha (because of like cultural osmosis and its impact on the early 2000s anime scene), Raven of the Inner Palace, Akagami no Shirayukihime, slice of life or introspective shows (such as Sousou no Frieren's first cour, Spy x Family)

slightly above entry level. something which needs a bit of trope/cultural knowledge (like the importance of high school student councils or usual HS/romance/love triangle tropes), but could be appreciated even without because of solid writing/animation and minimal (to none) fanservice/2nd hand embarrassment: Mob Psycho 100, Akatsuki no Yona, Noragami, Skip to Loafer, Kimi ni Todoke, Sailor Moon, Neon Genesis Evangelion to an extent (with warning about the way the plot goes wild and the fanservice and innuendo between teens and adults), Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, Detective Conan

something which requires a good grasp/recognition of tropes as well as willing to engage and think because of the way the anime is tackling and deconstructing tropes: Princess Tutu, RGU (with a lot of content warnings)

classic shonen vibes (aka fanservice galore, tournament arc/powering up tropes, etc): Kimetsu no Yaiba, early Naruto or Bleach

mindfuck but good: Mononoke, NGE (to an extent)

good/entertaining but the fanservice is going to be a MAJOR turn off: Soul Eater, Ranma 1/2, Lupin III movies/OVAs

You might have noticed but most of the series I've listed are relatively short, about 12-24 episodes (except for Inuyasha, SM, FMA, DetCo, and Ranma which are >100 episodes), since I think recommending a long-running series might scare some people away. That (and/or the pretty important amount of fanservice), is also why I didn't include big 'staples' like Naruto, Bleach, YYH, HXH, etc. regardless of my personal enjoyment or taste.

Most of what I like are fantasy/romances (like SAFT, My Happy Marriage, KamiHaji) or niche shows like Cybersix. I wouldn't recommend these to an acquaintance because of how close these series can be to me and how I don't want to put them up for judgement. I can be a bit defensive of my taste ^^

Thank you for the ask! It wasn't an easy exercise, but one I've been unconsciously doing on my own for a while, so it's nice to finally have it in writing if the need ever occurs!

I have to admit I enjoy the scrutinizing of '90s Guardians just because they're so fucking useless after R. I mean, one could dangle free Starlights tickets in their faces with the promise they're AT LEAST able to take out a MOTD or sub-Villain for them, and they'd still fail MISERABLY. LOL, they should've stayed in their Star Power form and not been given power ups in SuperS even though I always found it disgusting they're STILL in those forms BY THE FOURTH SEASON after R.

You need to se this Reddit post on people scructining Crystal Senshi in Sailor Moon Eternal on the scence where Usagi and Mamo disapper and everyone but Chibiusa and Hotaru stood there in shock which people are calling them useless and people bringing up the 90's senshi.

Which I love that someone bought up the kill count and the closest person to Usagi is Mako with 3.5 kills.

Take a moment and think about the fact each season is 38 to 46 episodes long.

Also being 200 episodes in the series.

Which filler episodes are roughly 50% of the damn show.

102 plot ( Begging of the season, Middle of the season and Season Finale Episodes)

98 filler.... (MOTD)

Which people are defeating their uselessness by saying " Oh the 90's anime is not perfect but at least they tired and they are more character."

That whole post got 120 plus comments trying to trash crystal senshi and once it's bought up that the 90's Senshi are ussless they want to get into excuse mode.

And they always bring up the fact the Senshi didn't killed the shittennou in Crystal when no other version besides the manga have them killed the Shittenou.

I mean people want to go on and on about Manga/Crystal just being power up for Usagi but at least they are freaking helping defeat the big bad. At least they are there for support and to lend their damn powers.

The 90's senshi can barely do that!

1.Sailor Moon Classic- Gets killed individually by DD girls which leaves Usa alone to face Beryl.. Comes back as ghost to give Usa energy to defeat Metallia. ( Not really Alone) 

2. Sailor Moon R Actively participates in the battle along with Mamoru and Chibiusa which they gives Usa energy. ( Almost the same set-up in the R movie and Usagi is not Alone)

3.Sailor Moon S Creates a barrier around the school ( which supposed to have been the outer jobs since they were the strongest) and gets beaten up badly by the death busters to brink of unconsciousness. Gives their energy to Usagi so she get turn into Super SM to save Saturn after she gives the Holy Gail to M9 thinking it was Hotaru.( Usagi pretty much goes alone since a big hand takes her.) 

4.Sailor Moon SuperS Become unconscious after the Usagi and Chibiusa use the power of the Golden Crystal as a Sprit Bomb as Usagi went to save Chibs from Nehellenia.( Usagi is alone)

5.Sailor Moon StarS Gets killed by Galaxia in one big blast while the outers betray Usa and kill Pluto and Saturn only for it to be a rouge before they die. The Starlights just stand there while she battles and then saves Galaxia.

But in Crystal they are useless...

I'm not the biggest fan of the manga myself and I straight up don't like Crystal, but I say watch what version you think you'll enjoy more!

I'm a massive fan of the 90'a anime, even tho I have my own problems with it, but it's genuine a joy to revisit. If you wanna bounce back and watch an episode or 2, just for light-hearted fun I really recommend these episodes:

Sm R (49, 56, 62, 65, 66, 71, 76, 78)

Sm S (92, 96, 103, 108, 109, 113)

Sm superS (134, 138, 141, 147, 152, 153)

Sailor Stars (177, 179, 185, 187, 188, 191)

These are not 'the best' or my favorite episodes btw, these are the kind of episodes that are perfect for a TV format, they're fun things you can lose yourself and have fun watching for 20 mins. Not too much narrative, but not extremely filler.

​Witch as a potential massive franchise was already dead by 2007 and Huntik came out later. Gormiti and anime definitely gave Huntik no space to breathe but also... no boys property has ever been as popular as Winx Club in Italy. Ever. Even the giant robots of the 70s came and went, while stuff like Lady Oscar regularly got reruns over 30 years of television. Italian culture favors the girly stuff. I'd say most of Europe, really.

Winx had no competition in 2009. What anime was airing in Italy? MyMelody? Kilari? Yes Pretty Cure 5 wasn't even an issue since it was on Rai.

Winx's competition in 2011 was Sailor Moon's revival and that one failed in ratings because Winx' reruns BLEW IT OUT OF THE WATER, merch after Season 1 SM was cancelled, though all seasons aired regularly. Have you noticed there's no italian Sailor Moon merch of anything past classic season 1?

I believe the audio censorship remaining intact despite the new additions and uncensored video killed its revival in Italy. Mediaset refused to buy Crystal after the 90s series failed to get enough traction again and like magic, the uncensored but mid Crystal on Rai Gulp, the same channel of Winx' numerous reruns, did shockingly well with the kids!

We still get international Marco Albiero merch but no dolls, toys, figures, stickers, magazines and stuff came out beyond season 1.

I was talking about Sailor Moon's youma with Lan the other day, specifically how they're portrayed in the classic anime, and hit upon something horrific:

Youma are the only monsters of the week that can take human form, and a few of them, most notably Thetis, are shown in human form in the Dark Kingdom/"Negaverse" when you'd think it wouldn't be necessary. We don't see how the existing youma were created (IIRC), but we do witness civilians being brainwashed and given the ability to become youma--the closest parallel in later MotWs are the Lemures, who are all the dreamless animated corpses of Nehelenia's court. The Seven Great Youma were reincarnated as humans (and one cat), the only time that MotW are ever shown to do this.

Ergo, the youma that weren't transformed civilians must be the members of the Earth Kingdom army that survived the assault on the Moon Kingdom.

An additional point of horror: I don't think it's too much of a stretch to assume that a youma's human form is their true one (though at least two were shown to copy other people's forms; chalk it up to Dark Kingdom magic). If everyone who reincarnates in SM looks the same in the past and the present... well, imagine Ryo Urawa's past self cutting down Moon Kingdom soldiers. Or worse, Grandpa Hino's guys fighting against Sailor Mars.

Haha yes, perfume is too literal even for a non-english speaker like me. And idk if it’s personal taste but i just don’t find perfume to sound beautiful. When you pronounce it, it doesn’t has a nice ring to it. And the font.. it’s really easy to make serif fonts look tacky nowadays because a lot of companies and designers promotes modernity, simplicity, elegance, cleanliness with sans serif (it’s basically just more popular nowadays but with reasonss). Not that you can’t use serif but look at the huge serif of the perfume font. It’s making it too crowded and it doesn’t help that the designer puts the letter very near to eo. Is it intentional? It’s way too sharp, looks like fork to me. The M and E is the worst. M reminds me of the mummy movie. Honestly this looks similar to the font I’ve made in my typo class. Especially the serif part. I still hate my font from back then with passion. (This is just just my analysis on the font, no hate intended tho i do hate the font🥲)

But the best part is I think it’s the only thing i find to be annoying. The bottle reminds me of lego people which cracks me up every now and then but honestly it could work with better typography. For the logo I think they want to give the imagery of love. And for the other promotional stuff, I don’t analyse it (photography and filmography is still a mystery to me) but I like them so far. Especially starting from blotter papers ( my fav is doyoung’s). I don’t remember much about tge bunny moon video. I like jungwoo’s the most for the musical film poster. It looks like coming of age movie poster. And his expression fits the quote very well. Something about sharing this love story with just us? Haha too lazy to open twitter now. And of course we’re getting lots and lots of doyoung. This promotion is getting me to be interested in jaehyun and jungwoo more as an individual artist and tgeir personality as well. I’m opening my senses to you jaehyunnnnn

You are right, the chosen font is too "toothy" for a love theme. Here what a font library gave me for "perfume". Mostly flowy, "handwritten" fonts to resemble spirals of aroma in the air and hint at a "personal touch".

Another direction is "clean", "classic", "sophisticated".

People react to lines, lines have character. Fonts is a difficult science to master (I suck at them, personally), but that's precisely why you shouldn't trust your inhouse "all-rounder" designer and hire a pro.

The bottle is generic, it's passable. I thought that there was an opportunity to tie the space/Moon theme in - make the bottle circular with rounded grooves or a narrow crescent on top to resemble a shape of the spacesuit helmet. Stylised enough to not be literal, just a hint at the shape.

I don't know if SM will really go for "homesickness" as fans proposed (at this point, looks more like they won't), however, space travel indeed has a strong association with it. Lovers separated by a journey is a long-lasting trope (a sailor/warrior and his wife, a knight and his ladylove).

I don't much like the bottle on the black cover because the cover is ultra masculine and dominant, meanwhile the rest of the image we are presented with is not.

The photographs and the videos are pretty good (except those pictures with weirdly angled limbs, from the "we sell clothes" series, the bar was lowered there). SM has a roster of good specialists it can contact quickly. I've watched a video with a Japanese MV maker, where he said the usual time frame is two weeks for everything, from the concept to the shooting. Therefore, they can do what they already know well quickly.

I think the problem with the logo and the fonts is that noone in SM (or, rather, among those who worked with DJJ) is aware of the problem. The logo had to be created quickly to handle it to the companies who prepared invitation cards and the bottle sculpture, who did the 3D rotating model for IG, that's why, I suspect, it was done by an inhouse designer.

The idea of the logo is not bad, I agree that it evokes "love knot" association. It looks OK in a small size and in 3D with moving reflections. Both hide the mistakes in lines and distances. It's like a circular shape with uneven wobbly edges against a proper circle. The circle is a perfect shape, the wobbly thing is not.

For me it's Jungwoo - Doyoung - Jaehyun.

Woo's is indeed like a scene from a drama, like he is looking at someone, they are having an intimate dialogue in an empty classroom. This Woo instantly resembles the Woo in his first MV cameo. (I guess they aimed for it).

Doyoung portrays "commitment" well, he looks like he waits, in pain, for someone. Stoic, but sad. Jaehyun is his romantic self, however, we saw better pictures with this angle, and the pose doesn't reflect "passion" well.

Still, it's just posters for socmed. It's appropriate quality for the task, with a lot of attention to details (the text, the phrases), so no complaints (the main font doesn't match the words well, but it's the album title's font, so it's just a passed down mistake).
