Dare I say Rzecki x Wokulski

hey. uh. we put your classic lit boyfriend into the tumblr fandom. yeah, he's gay now and being shipped with his homoerotic literary foil. no, we can't undo it. if it's any consolation, they're making posts about you too. you're the girlboss who is the only one with the braincell. um sorry about that.

July 29 — Some symbolism of the Demeter.
As so many already picked up on, there’s irony in the ship being called the Demeter, after the goddess of fertility and harvest, when the crew is being picked off one by one (I mean, Dracula is kind of harvesting them).
Another part of Demeter’s myth is how she rescued her daughter, Persephone, from Hades and the Underworld (well, bargained for her).
The Demeter (the Big D?) ship is also slipping between worlds, from the old world to the new, to deliver Dracula to England. You could say the ship is bringing a piece of the underworld/hell to the surface, but also that the Demeter is birthing evil into England through Dracula’s arrival.
Equally, The Big D is in this in-between state of unreality and reality as it becomes a phantom ship with the hard swings in mood, which are highlighted in these logs. This hits back to the in-between nature of Demeter rescuing Persephone and also that of Dracula as a vamp.
Just to throw it out there, Drac Daddy is also traveling in boxes of soil, which can be seen as a gift from Demeter. Plus, he feeds on blood, and in the myth evil (Hades) had stolen Demeter’s blood (her daughter).
Fun stuff.

so one of the things about me is I'm a massive Coriolanus apologist
and it never gets brought up enough when people start talking about homeoerotic Shakespeare plays.
So here's the set up. Disillusioned roman general Martius Coriolanus has left Rome to find his nemesis Aufidius, because Aufidius is the only person he feels any connection to or respects anymore. (Which is already such a good set up. my god.)
And this is what Aufidius says when they meet:
AUFIDIUS: Let me twine Mine arms about that body, whereagainst My grainèd ash an hundred times hath broke And scarred the moon with splinters.
(so at the VERY LEAST they embrace, and mOST productions have Coriolanius not wearing a shirt, so Aufidius can literally trace his scars, because Coriolanus having a lot of scars is v important plot point...)
AUFIDIUS: Here I clip The anvil of my sword and do contest As hotly and as nobly with thy love As ever in ambitious strength I did Contend against thy valor. Know thou first, I loved the maid I married; never man Sighed truer breath. But that I see thee here, Thou noble thing, more dances my rapt heart Than when I first my wedded mistress saw Bestride my threshold. (...) Thou hast beat me out Twelve several times, and I have nightly since Dreamt of encounters ’twixt thyself and me; We have been down together in my sleep, Unbuckling helms, fisting each other’s throat, And waked half dead with nothing.
(At then Aufidius just makes him co-captain of his forces.)
(it's honestly one of the reasons I think this play is kind of C-squad, it's been harder to teach historically because like what could the non-homoerotic interpretation of that speech even be?)

I picked up Baldick’s In Frankenstein's Shadow on a whim the other day (not necessarily an endorsement because I’ve barely cracked the text, but he does have some interesting stuff to say) & I’m kind of dying to hear your other Frankenstein discourse opinions….
shfjshdk ok this is gonna be like a very specific & niche complaint but I’ve come across it multiple times since reading the book & I think it’s incredibly silly…… but several times I’ve seen people say that any interpretation of the text that reads subliminal homosexual desire into victor’s creation of the creature is gross & problematic because it’s pseudo incest and therefore not valid. which I find silly on multiple fronts…….
like first of all if you’re doing a queer reading of the novel which by the way there are loads of legitimate academic articles that do exactly that, you cannot just stop at art of victor & henry clerval wearing flower crowns…… look at the material. victor spent his whole life under the pressure & expectation of his family to marry a girl who he thought of as a sister, he had a close intimate friendship with clerval, and when he moved away from his family he became obsessed with the creation of a perfect man who he wanted to be as beautiful & well proportioned as possible & have a working dick….. and then when this man is actually brought to life, victor is suffused with horror, revulsion, guilt, & shame, and spends the rest of his life running from it. there’s 100% a reading here of this being symbolic of his repressed homosexuality that he then tries to escape!
and just, the fact that people protest this on grounds of pseudo incest? in this GOTHIC NOVEL? why are you reading gothic literature if this bothers you? in the same novel alone, victor is canonically engaged to his cousin/adoptive sister! the author mary shelley wrote another novel about unrequited father daughter incest! like….. what are we doing people

the ships i like
red and blue characters, enemies to lovers, opposites attract, friends to lovers, even better is friends to enemies to friends to lovers, basically, i need that slow burn 400k pining yearning loving someone so much someone so opposite to you that you feel like tearing through your skin AND their skin and hoping that you can burn off the physical barriers that separate your fucking conscious soul from their own like you want to crawl into their skin and organs and beating heart and lay your ephemeral self up to it and just lay there until you are no longer two separate beings but I want it so even though you want to be the same you love someone so much you want to be there forever with them i want it to also hurt because how can you really love someone exactly like yourself i want it to be reflective like a broken mirror is like a shattered window like you can see yourself in their eyes and what fear what you see but how can you run when it's yourself how can you run when you know that they want the same things that you do when you know they want to be held and they want to be loved all the same i want them to be opposites on different sides of the board and even so they move the chess pieces between them to get to one another whether that be through playing the game or sweeping the whole board aside i want them to be broken and imperfect and "let me fill the cracks in you with my own imperfect pieces" i want it to be "you are jagged and you make me bleed endlessly, oh how perfect that both you and i love the taste of iron and tears" i want them to hurt each other i want them to mend each other i want it to be snapping, biting, starving lone wolves meeting in the dead of winter knowing they could choose to fight and kill one another for the potential of sustinence, for the glimmer of hope that might come regardless of looming death, that to be unselfish means to perish but despite all rational thought or instinct instead choose to keep one another company through the promise of the unknown to provide comfort and "don't worry i'll be here beside you" through the void because despite the helpessness of it despite the option for selflishness all they choose each other all they choose is a fleeting moment of partnership though the cold, through the unforgiving, through the pain, through the loss, despite it all there's still an "i'm here. i'm still here. i will stay right here. your hands and knees and mouth are covered with blood but what choice did you have what choice did i have i am the same i understand i am right here."
yeah i like those ships

my special talent in the Large Fandom I have a sideblog for is that things I actually spend time on tend to flop (esp. relative to the fandom’s size) but I have multiple joke posts in rotation with notes in the thousands
