Delphine et Carole Insoumuses
Tumblr media
In the 14th arrondissement of Paris, a garden will soon be named after Carole Roussopoulos. On March 10, 11 and 12, the cinema L'Entrepôt took the opportunity to organize a weekend of screenings of the filmmaker’s films, a nice tribute to the director who ran this cinema from 1986 to 1994.
The first evening was devoted to the documentary Delphine et Carole Insoumuses by Callisto Mc Nulty, Carole's granddaughter. The title is based on the female collective Les Insoumuses composed of Carole Roussopoulos, Delphine Seyrig, Ioana Wieder and Nadja Ringart. However, this film only portrays two of them: Delphine and Carole. It consists mainly of video images from the ‘70s filmed by the two directors. It tells the story of their friendship and their careers. There is footage from Y’a qu’à pas baiser!, Le FHAR, SCUM Manifesto, Maso et Miso vont en bateau, Les prostituées de Lyon parlent or Sois belle et tais-toi.
The two women met at a video lesson, reserved for women, given in Paris by Carole. “Uneducated the way I was, I had no idea who she was”, said Carole, “Very quickly, Delphine understood the subversive use of video. We became friends and started working together”. They wanted to use this new technology to express themselves and give a voice to those who are silenced. As a continuation of this project, in 1982, Delphine Seyrig, Carole Roussopoulos and Ioana Wieder founded the Simone de Beauvoir Audiovisual Centre, which still gathers, produces and distributes audiovisual documents on the rights, struggles and creation of women’s art.
Delphine et Carole Insoumuses, is a wonderful dive into the work and commitment of these two women. They struggle with insolence, intransigence and a great deal of humor. We think in particular of Maso et Miso vont en bateau, a masterpiece of subversion and humor where the two filmmakers respond by intertitles to the remarks made by Françoise Giroud, then Secretary of State for the Status of Women.
Callisto Mc Nulty’s film is also a tribute to the feminism of the seventies. A joyful form a struggle such as the demonstration in tribute to the wife of the unknown soldier with the cult banner « There is even more unknown than the Unknown Soldier, his wife ».
Callisto Mc Nulty creates a magnificent montage that gives us an overview of the work of Delphine and Carole.  The different extracts make us want to (re)discover their filmography, so it was a very good choice to program this film at the beginning of this weekend! We come out of the screening with the desire to take a camera and document today's feminist struggles.
