[Rezension] Der größte Spaß, den wir je hatten – Claire Lombardo

Inhalt: Wie hält man das Glück der eigenen Eltern aus? Vierzig glückliche Ehejahre: Für die vier erwachsenen Sorenson-Schwestern sind ihre Eltern ein nahezu unerreichbares Vorbild – und eine ständige Provokation! Wendy, früh verwitwet, tröstet sich mit Alkohol und jungen Männern. Violet mutiert von der Prozessanwältin zur Vollzeitmutter. Liza, eine der jüngsten Professorinnen des Landes, bekommt ein Kind, von dem sie nicht weiß, ob sie es will. Und Grace, das Nesthäkchen, bei dem alle Rat suchen, lebt eine Lüge, die niemand ahnt. Was die vier ungleichen Schwestern vereint, ist die Angst, niemals so glücklich zu werden wie die eigenen Eltern. Dann platzt Jonah in ihre Mitte, vor fünfzehn Jahren von Violet zur Adoption freigegeben. Und Glück ist auf einmal das geringste Problem.

Rezension: Familienromane, sind etwas was ich nicht so oft lese, auch wenn es immer wieder spannend ist in andere Familien einzutauchen, wie z.B. „Die unsterbliche Familie Salz“. Nun lernte ich also die Familie Sorenson kennen mit den Eltern Marilyn und David, die eine mehr oder weniger perfekte Ehe führen und sich auch Jahrzehnte nach der Hochzeit noch immer lieben und es anderen auch zeigen. Ihre Kinder haben ständig das Gefühl, nicht an ihre Eltern heranreichen zu können. Die älteste, Wendy, hat ihre große Liebe kennengelernt und sie auch wieder beerdigt und keiner der nachfolgenden Männer kann auch nur im Geringsten an ihre große Liebe heranreichen. Dazu hat sie noch eine Totgeburt hinter sich und versucht nun, mit Alkohol und Männern ihre Gefühle zu betäuben. Violet ist die zweite Tochter von Marilyn und David und ist so etwas wie die perfekte Tochter mit dem perfekten Mann und den perfekten kleinen Söhnen, und die so gar nichts an sich heranlässt und alles kontrolliert und plant. Liza, kommt danach und sie hat einen eher depressiven Lebensgefährten von dem sie dann auch noch schwanger wird. Sie geht ihm fremd und er trennt sich dann auch von Liza. Nun zum Nesthäkchen, Grace, die weit von ihren Eltern wegzieht und ihrer Familie erzählt, wie toll es in ihrem Leben laufe. Das ist allerdings mehr oder weniger eine Lüge. Dann taucht Jonah auf die Bildfläche auf. Er ist ausgerechnet der Sohn von Violet, dieser ach so perfekten Mutter und Ehefrau, den sie zu Adoption freigegeben hat. Beim ersten Treffen zusammen mit Wendy konnte sie ihn noch nicht einmal ansprechen. Sie verhält sich wie eine Rabenmutter und sucht auch keinen Kontakt zu ihm. Jonah wird immer mehr zum Katalysator in der Familie. Er lebt erst bei Wendy und dann bei Marilyn und David, die er zunehmend liebt und Wendy ist auch immer mehr wie eine große Schwester für Jonah und hilft ihm einige Male aus der Patsche, auch wenn sie ihn aus verschiedenen Gründen vorher auf die Straße setzt bzw. zu ihren Eltern abschiebt, was für Jonah ein Glücksfall ist. Das Buch hat über 700 Seiten und man kann es sehr gut lesen. Man wird gut unterhalten. Ich habe ja nun schon einiges erzählt über die Familie Sorenson, aber man kann noch viel mehr erleben. Von Seite zu Seite wird man immer mehr Mitglied dieser Familie mit ihren Schattenseiten, aber auch mit einigen lustigen Situationen, wie es halt in einer normalen Familie so ablaufen könnte. Gut, diese Familie ist gut situiert, also Vater Arzt, Wendy hat reich geheiratet, Violet hat einen Anwalt geheiratet und hat selbst Jura studiert, Liza ist Professorin und dann Grace, die nichts auf die Reihe bekommt, aber es ist nie abgehoben oder so, dass man denkt, als Ottonormalverbraucher kann man sich da nicht reindenken und reinfühlen. Ich sage, nein, dem ist nicht so. Was mich am Anfang ein wenig irritiert hat, war das hin und her switchen zwischen den einzelnen Personen. Hat man dies einmal verstanden, dass man auch mal in einem Kapitel zwischen allen Familienmitgliedern hin und herschalten kann und dadurch immer wieder die verschiedenen Standpunkte kennenlernt, wird man von Seite zu Seite immer besser und intelligenter unterhalten. Für mich einfach ein Roman zum Lachen, Nachdenken und Weinen. Man hat alle Emotionen, die man auch so aus der Familie kennt, mit allen Missverständnissen und unausgesprochenen Worten, die man gelegentlich runterschluckt. Mich würde es auch mal reizen, was die Autorin noch so schreibt. Es müssen ja nicht immer 700 Seiten sein, aber den Schreibstil finde ich interessant und angenehm zu lesen, auch ehrlich und nicht zu abgehoben. So kann ich mir sicherlich noch einige Romane vorstellen und ich hoffe, sie auch. Auch wenn Familie nicht immer der größte Spaß ist, den man je hatte -aber so ist nun mal das Familienleben, mit einem Auf und Ab und kleineren und größeren Lügen oder Missverständnissen.

Violet, is the perfect stay-at-home-mom, but battles anxiety and self-doubt when the darkest part of her past resurfaces. Liza is a newly tenured professor, who finds herself pregnant with a baby she’s not sure she wants by a man she’s not sure she loves. Grace is the youngest daughter, who begins living a lie that no one in her family even suspects. Above it all, the daughters share the lingering fear that they will never find a love quite like their parents’.

REVIEW

Hold on tight because THE MOST FUN WE EVER HAD is a hefty family drama set in Chicago, and spread over half a century. It’s a serious reading commitment at 530 pages, but well worth the effort. The writing beautifully weaves the past and the present into a unique tapestry of one family’s story of significant life-altering events. I absolutely loved how many of the dramatic events in the story happened in the midst of the beautiful ginkgo tree in the Sorenson’s backyard.

The wide-breadth of characters are so well developed you may think that author Claire Lombardo was perhaps writing about your family or maybe the family next door. She certainly seems to knows her way around family dynamics. The family situations were realistic and relatable. As the youngest of four siblings in my own family, I could totally understand and appreciate Grace’s feelings as the forgotten child.

This debut novel is slammed full of both heart-wrenching and joyful moments. Lombardo easily captures the multitude of family feelings swirling around births, deaths, infidelities, secrets and lies.

My favorite part of the novel was the story involving Violet’s dark past coming to light. Don’t we all have some hidden secret we wish would stay buried forever? But what if...? And then there is Wendy, my favorite character, who loves to throw verbal bombs at family members and then delight in watching the implosions. But she so much more complicated that that! Loved her dynamic take charge personality! She certainly makes the story interesting...

I listened to the audio version of this book and initially found it a little difficult to follow as the story jumped from character to character and back and forth in time. After getting a grasp of the characters, all was good.

Violet is trying to deal with her husband and two young children while a past secret threatens to tear her family apart. Liza is a professor with a fulfilling career but her love life is a mess. Her partner is suffering from depression forcing her to play the role of a caregiver to her partner as well as her unborn child. Grace, the baby of the family, is drained from the expectations that her family. A recent graduate who fails to get accepted at any university, she lies to her parents about commencing law school leading her to narrate a few more lies until it threatens to drive her insane with hatred for herself. Despite all these challenges, the family pulls through each struggle stronger because of the love and care they have for each other. There are family clashes due to the generation gap but beneath it all there is the hope that no matter what happens they will overcome it all. 📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖⁣ ⁣ Hello everyone and hope your week is going well so far. Today I’m back with a review of The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo, which is on the Women’s Prize long-list this year and was a novel I was nervous yet determined to read.⁣ ⁣ Why was I nervous? Well, I’ve heard mixed things. Things that made me screw up my face and wonder if I could read it myself. Basically, it’s a family drama revolving around parents - Marilyn and David and their four daughters Wendy, Violet, Liza and Grace. The parents are madly in love and this love has an effect on the children for their entire lives. ⁣ ⁣ This all sounds very nice and perfectly lovely BUT there were some moments in the writing where I really did cringe, particularly in the beginning. I read out a passage to Mr B once and he told me to put the book down immediately 😂 Then there were other moments where a character would say something and I questioned the authenticity of it. In other words, would they really say that in that way in real life? I’m not so sure. ⁣ ⁣ After the above mentioned passage, I forced myself to continue and funnily enough, after about 100 pages, I became really invested in the characters, specifically the four daughters. I cared what they went through in the past, I was interested in what they were going through in the present and I was intrigued what their future might hold. ⁣ ⁣ Yes there were little quirks that could have been ironed out and yes, Marilyn and David were incredibly irritating at points! However, I think they might have needed to be like that for the reader to realise what effect their “perfect” relationship had on the rest of their family.
