Book Review: Rise of the Vicious Princess By: C.J. Redwine
Post By: BookGirl Rise or the Vicious Princess By: C.J. Redwine Cover: So this cover did grab my attention but probably not for the best reasons. I didn’t really get it. I think the thing in the middle is a sword but I really wasn’t sure until I got a closer look. So it did get me to pick up the book. The sword appears to be underwater so I thought perhaps this was a mermaid story. However no…

Tumblr media
Princess Charis Willowthorn is the dutiful sword of Calera. Raised to be ruthless and cunning, her only goal is to hold her war-torn kingdom together long enough to find a path toward peace with their ancient foe, Montevallo, even if the cost is her own heart. When violence erupts in the castle itself and an unseen enemy begins sinking Calera’s ships, Charis realizes a threat much greater than Montevallo is coming for her people. So she forms a plan. By day, she is Calera’s formidable princess intent on forging an alliance with Montevallo. By night, she disguises herself as a smuggler and roams the sea with a trusted group of loyalists, hunting for their new enemies. And through it all, there’s the one boy she can’t have—who guards her life but steals her heart. But her enemies are much closer than Charis realizes, and her heart isn’t the only thing she has left to lose.

The Shadow Queen
Review #407 Warning, there are spoilers. I believe this is a standalone within a series of other retellings featuring different couples. by CJ Redwine. I had a hard time rating this one (see why below) but will settle on 4.2/5 stars for this YA fast paced fantasy with lots of action. I love that it’s about the most powerful instead of the most beautiful. “Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the…

❤️
1. share your favorite memory of this year
There's been many good ones this year, so I don't know if I can pic a favorite 🤔 but the medieval festival week is definitely a good memory, especially the consert with Jordbrand 😊
3. list the top five books you read this year
In no particular order: Dark earth by Rebecca Stott, The Wish Granter by CJ Redwine, Wolfsbane by Michelle Paver, Heart's blood by Juliet Marillier, Uprooted by Naomi Novik
6. what is the one new thing you discovered this year (could be a place/hobby/song etc)?
Hmmm...i discovered the musical Anastasia, which I now love:D
10. your personal song of the year
I have no idea what this means but.... Pancakes for dinner by Lizzy McAlpine or Like my father by JAX, because I relate to the lyrics and they've felt very relevant for me this year
11.what is an achievement that you are proud of this year?
That I saved Liv's life. You know the story, but for those who don't: I live on a farm with sheep (not my farm nor my sheep sadly, but I live here so mine by proxy i guess). This year was the first year I was present for the lambing season and helped out quite a lot. Now one of the first lambs of the season was a set of twins, and the lambing went wrong. The first lamb was really big and got stuck, and when we finally got him out, the second one was in quite a bad shape. She was super small and weak and couldn't stand up, so she couldn't suckle (feed). The owner was convinced she wouldn't make it but I wanted to try anyway, so I spent hours in the sheep pen, just holding her to keep her warm, tried to teach her to stand and held her up against her mother so she could feed every hour. First night I woke up every hour to go out and feed her, second and third night every other hour. She had learned how to stand and walk by the fourth day and against all odds she made it and is now a fully grown healthy sheep 🐑 i named her Liv, which is an old Scandinavian name that means Life
22.list any three new things you learned this year (could be recipes, a new skill, etc.)
New embroidery technics, Norwegian (still far from fluent, but much better at it now), how to felt wool

THE BLOOD SPELL - 9.5/10
*some spoilers*
- morning nerds! this weekend’s read was the blood spell by C.J Redwine and honestly i loved this one.
- it’s a cool retelling of cinderella with more magic, drama and cats with serious main character energy.
- the way kellan (the prince) and blue (cinderella) grew their friendship from childhood friends holding grudges to more of a support system was very well done. and the way they bonded over their grief was worked into the story well.
- also nessa deserves the world. that girl came up with her own form of sign language when she couldn’t form words and has so much attitude and determination. it’s perfect. and points to kellan for declaring that anyone who hadn’t bothered to learn her signs would not be considered for his betrothal.
- i think adopting pepperell as cat number four would be the smartest move for me as an adult.
- and overall the way in which the original story of cinderella was used as the base for the plot was in my opinion very well executed. it followed the story and all the important characters were represented but without it being cheesy and overly forced.
- there are a few other books in this author’s ravenspire collection which i would gladly read one of these days. have a bitchin sunday!

Book of the Month: The Blood Spell by C.J. Redwine
Tumblr media
I do believe that the majority of my month this time has been all fairy tale retellings! I guess I have to switch up my genres a bit this April. But no one does retellings, especially of the princess variety, quite like Redwine, and they always deliver. This one was a Cinderella retelling if you couldn’t tell by the pumpkin on the cover, and is about a girl named Blue who is trying to hide her magic from the world. But when her father is murdered and a cruel woman steps in to take over the shop that Blue’s father owned as well as their house, she has to find a way out without magic. Unfortunately, the only person that can help is Kellan, the prince that she’s hated since she was a child. And now that Kellan is back from boarding school and trying to find a suitable girl to marry, all he wants is to escape. But when a magical force starts terrorizing the kingdom, Kellan and Blue must work together to find out what’s causing it. And the more time the two spend together, they quickly start to realize that they may have been wrong about each other all these years. This was one of my favorites in the series, and I loved the story and the characters and, as always, the magic. Kellan was a side character in The Traitor Prince, so it was cool to see someone I was a little familiar with in this one. I loved Blue as well, and thought she was the perfect embodiment of a Cinderella character, one who is kind and brave and puts others before herself. And her chemistry with Kellan was off the charts, especially when they bantered. Another one of my favorite things about Redwine’s novels is that she always has the perspectives of the heroine, the love interest, and the villain, and they are always written so unbelievably well. If you like Cinderella, or just a really great fantasy story filled with magic and adventure and a little bit of romance, do not miss out on this one, even if you’ve never read any of her others. The other stories in this series include The Shadow Queen, The Wish Granter, and The Traitor Prince, which I just reviewed a few weeks ago. Happy reading!

I just finished a book and I just have to recommend it, especially to anyone who loves the classic fairytales
Blood Spell by C. J. Redwine is one of a series of standalone retellings of classic fairytales called Ravenspire. Set in a magical world with epic magic, endearing characters, and astounding plot, you'll never be bored reading any of these books. Even if you know how the old fairytales go, you'll always be on the edge of your seat with these incredibly imaginative renditions. Blood Spell is an incredible, yet discreet shout out to the story of Cinderella. Magic, murder, mystery, romance, action, and villainy make up the 436 pages.
I was worried this was going to be childish or predictable, but I had nothing to fear. This was a great book and I want to recommend it to everyone. You can find out more about The Blood Spell and the Ravenspire series here.
And the pic below is a beautifully illustrated map of the fairytale world that all of these books take place in.
