reading the witcher books after watching the netflix series is such a slap to the face (positive) mostly because of how much sweeter geralt is to everyone but also just because of. everything. I’m mostly talking about how he treats dandelion (jaskier) because the show did them dirty
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(all from the last wish and sword of destiny)
netflix geralt: jaskier we aren’t friends >:(
book geralt, absolutely unprompted: ah yes, my dear friend dandelion
and ALSO his dynamic with ciri is absolutely GOLD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(-sword of destiny) like. god I’m liable to get emotional, geralt, stop being sweet
I don’t have pictures but his relationship with yennefer is also so much better in the books and get this
the geraskier mountain divorce didn’t happen
tl;dr if you liked the netflix series (or even if you didn’t) you should definitely check out the books. the characters are so much more developed and the writing style is gorgeous. I’ve read three of them since getting the series last week.

One of the standout moments for me in The Witcher Season 3 is the subtle yet powerful detail involving Jaskier. It occurs when he strikes a deal, offering to bring Ciri to Redania if Radvoid eliminates Rience. In that fleeting moment, we witness Jaskier rubbing his fingers, the same fingers that were burned by Rience. This visual storytelling is incredibly impactful because it conveys Jaskier's profound fear of Rience without uttering a single word.
Personally, I enjoy delving into theories and crafting fanfiction centered around Jaskier retaining physical scars from his torture at the hands of Rience. Although the show does not explore this aspect, it does bring attention to Jaskier's psychological scars, which are just as compelling.
An alternative approach that works equally well is highlighting Jaskier's intelligence throughout the series, particularly in the third season. For example, there's a scene where Jaskier impresses Rience by discussing his ability to discern if someone is drunk or not. This skill suggests that Jaskier has honed his perception of people, seeing them for who they truly are rather than how they present themselves. One can easily imagine that Jaskier acquired this skill as a survival mechanism while performing in taverns, possibly with Geralt coming to his aid during instances of assault, be it physical or sexual. Despite Geralt not always being by his side and not being a formidable fighter, Jaskier's cleverness shines through.
Illustrating Jaskier's intense trauma in relation to Rience is effective because the show consistently demonstrates that his greatest strength lies in his ability to communicate. Not only does Jaskier excel in singing, but he also possesses the gift of persuasive speech. While he often finds himself talking his way into trouble, he also has a knack for talking himself out of it. An excellent example is when he assumes the persona of Sandpiper to secure passage to safety. Jaskier achieves this feat through his words rather than physical combat.
Thus, the scene where Jaskier remains silent about the horrors inflicted upon him by Rience perfectly aligns with his character. It exemplifies the depth of his fear, leaving him uncharacteristically wordless. This nuanced portrayal resonates strongly because it showcases the vulnerability of a character who usually wields words as his most potent weapon.

Shut Up and Dance With Me
Geralt has always known that soft things aren’t meant for him.
It’s why he pushed Jaskier away. It’s why he keeps away from towns when he’s not working. It’s why he denied his Child Surprise so vehemently for so many years. He was told that the world would have nothing for him but roughness, so he roughened himself in preparation and never truly relaxed.
Until now, that is.
He’d stumbled over his apology to Jaskier—not the one in the prison cell, his real apology—and the bard had laughed at him. He’d panicked for about two seconds, which was as long as it took for Jaskier to close the distance between them and pull Geralt into an embrace.
“I’ll always forgive you, dear heart,” he’d said. “It might make me fucking stupid, but that’s never stopped me before.”
“Taking my lines now, huh?” Geralt had replied, hugging Jaskier back with a bone-deep warmth he’d never felt before.
Maybe he’d never felt warm before because he never let himself get close enough to the heat.
Now, Jaskier is strumming his lute and singing some silly song about shutting up and dancing, and Ciri is giggling as she leads Geralt through the steps of a dance. Her hair is loose around her shoulders, and she’s wearing a dress that Jaskier and Yennefer had managed to produce from someplace or another.
“Spin me,” she says, laughing too much for it to sound like a proper order, but he obeys anyway, smiling indulgently as he grabs his daughter by the waist and lifts her up, spinning around a few times before setting her down, grasping her hand, and twirling her on her own feet. She laughs harder, her joy ringing out into the snow, into the music.
The music stops, but Jaskier keeps singing, and Geralt glances over to see the bard dancing with Lambert, both men laughing just as much as Ciri. It only takes another second for her to notice, and she spins once more with Geralt before reaching out to switch, falling into a waltz with Jaskier and leaving the two witchers to quickly decide whether to continue dancing.
Lambert decides for both of them, hooking his elbow around Geralt’s and skipping in a circle, dragging Geralt with him.
They switch directions a few times, and then Ciri is shoving her way between them to dance with Lambert, leaving Geralt to be caught deftly by Jaskier and maneuvered into a different dance, one that causes them to be pressed close together. Jaskier keeps singing, keeps grinning, but his eyes have softened as he gazes up at Geralt’s face.
Geralt, feeling seen and insecure, dares a glance toward his brother and daughter. Lambert, roaring with laughter, is throwing Ciri into the air and catching her with ease. Jaskier has gone through enough choruses that they both know the words, so as Lambert heaves Ciri upwards again, they’re both singing along.
“She said ‘shut up and dance with me!’”
Jaskier stops singing to chuckle at them, but joins back in during the next repetition, with one notable change.
“This witcher is my destiny,” he says teasingly, and looks nothing but delighted by the concept, unlike everyone else forced into Geralt’s life by destiny.
The thing is, Jaskier wasn’t a result of destiny. He’s here by choice, and if he’s so happy to joke that he’s destined to be here, with Geralt, then—
Geralt kisses him.
Jaskier makes a surprised humming sound and returns the kiss eagerly, his hands going from Geralt’s shoulders to the back of his neck as he stands up on his toes to get closer.
“Oi, bard, the song doesn’t end in the middle of the lyric like that, right? Why’d—oh,” Lambert says. “About time. Fucking morons.”
“Gross,” says Ciri. “But yeah. It is about time.”
Maybe Geralt wasn’t meant for soft things. But he’s learning, day by day, that maybe that doesn’t mean he has to live a life without them.
and here’s the rest of the drawing of all the dance combinations! the fic took me like 10 minutes and the drawing took a few hours😭

Whenever Radovid pays a visit to collect Jaskier, they embark on a delightful date. Radovid has experienced firsthand the fierce protectiveness of Jaskier's unconventional family.
As soon as Radovid knocks on the door, Ciri bombards him with inquiries about his intentions towards Jaskier. Her curiosity is relentless, ensuring that Radovid is fully aware of the consequences of any ill will towards their beloved bard.
Yennefer, not one to mince words, issues a stern warning, threatening to transform Radovid into a helpless rat and crush him under her foot should he dare to harm their cherished troubadour.
Meanwhile, Geralt quietly occupies a corner, meticulously sharpening an imposingly large knife while emitting low growls that send shivers down Radovid's spine. His menacing presence is undeniably terrifying, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
To say that Radovid is petrified of the formidable Jaskier family would be a colossal understatement. Nevertheless, Jaskier remains blissfully unaware of the underlying tension, thoroughly enjoying their delightful date without a care in the world.

It's Raining Witchers
A/N: I currently have eight requests on my list. I am slowly making my way through them. I’m not sure if I will do them in order or if I will write them depending on my mood. A couple of them are smut requests so I’m not sure when I’ll get those out either. This fic was anon requested.
Pairings: Geralt x Reader
Summary: You weren’t showing off when you scaled up on top of buildings through your own wit and muscles. It was a necessity you had learned early on in life. Most people just found it unusual. Geralt and Ciri were not most people.
Or, “Geralt and Ciri's reaction to reader who knows how to parkour.”
Word count: 339
Warnings: none
Geralt
“Where did you learn how to climb walls?” Geralt teased from the ground as he watched you scale up the castle walls with nothing but your own limbs. “Is it magic?” It was dark out and neither of you wanted to be seen. Your voices were hushed despite the distance between you.
You scoffed down at him from a gargoyle’s ledge. “It’s no magic, Geralt. It just takes practice.”
Geralt gave you an unconvinced look and a smile that would have most running for the hills. You personally found the expression endearing. “I’ve lived quite a few decades longer than you and I haven’t been able to manage anything like that.”
You sat on the ledge and smiled down at him. “You had me fooled. What with the twirls and swift skips you do while fighting.”
“There’s no magic there,” Geralt began. “Only Vesemir’s constant lectures on proper form.”
Ciri
“Could you teach me how to do that?”
You had leapt from the balcony onto the slanted rooftops in less than three jumps. The wind was brisk and cold this high up on the castle. The sky was endless and not a cloud was in sight. “Geralt would kill me if he found you up here.” The shingles were loose and you almost lost your footing more times than you would like to admit.
Ciri rolled her eyes at your concern and crossed her arms. “That’s only if he finds out. You know you aren’t in trouble unless you get caught.”
“I think your father would have a few choice words about that.” You tried to scold her but your heart wasn’t in it.
“Would you teach me or would you rather I learn on my own?”
You gave her an unamused look. “Would you promise not to tell Geralt?”
Ciri lit up in a smile. “Cross my heart.” She bounced on the balls of her feet in excitement. “What do I have to do first?”
“Promise you won’t haunt me if you throw yourself off the balcony.”
