#circa retirement age

Hey DC x DP crowd! I've got a prompt for you, one I don't have the time or bandwidth to write but would love to see:
Danny met Dick Grayson as Robin during his time with the Teen Titans (circa 2000's tv show, details up to author about ages and timelines) and through the events, leaves Dick with an emergency contact if he ever runs into ghost trouble down the road.
Years go by, whether they keep in touch or not, before Dick realizes he's up against a situation he can't handle except to realize ghosts are involved (can be rogues, can be Jason's situation, whatever). So he tells the Bats and Birds he has a contact he can call, but it's cashing in a big favor to do so.
Danny gets pulled in, much older and retired from heroing, and is very nonchalant about whatever it is they need.
Honestly the details are up to the writer, but I'm craving a Teen Titans past meetup story and I've been entrenched in the Jason/Danny and Tim/Danny corner so much I'd love to see Dick accidentally be the introduction. Though I'm happy with most pairings or no pairings, I wanted to offer the idea.
Might write an open ended oneshot, who knows.
Have fun! feel free to link stuff in the notes or dm me if you know one that exists!

Do you ever get caught up in the immensity of the Guilty Gear fandom that used to exist? Not that it was particularly large, but it felt different.
Around 20 deadlinks in and I start to feel like I’m walking in an abandoned city of skyscrapers when I’m barely medieval. Where did they all go? Did they used to be a nation?
I do... Last night I spent 3 hours going through just Livejournal links and blog archives, not even Dreamwidth or Geocities webrings, and it was like that. Some of the core people went off to college/post-college jobs, like Ed Chang. Most of the original GG fandom left, I think, because they would be in their 40s now. Isn't that crazy to think about?
Some LJ profiles had birthyears that were like 1980, 1982. They would've been in their teens or early 20s at the peak of Sol/Ky discourse circa 2004. Wonder what they would think knowing people like you and I have been sifting through those old posts haha
It is sad how much is gone too though... I used to be in the Doctor Who fandom with a big interest on the pre-reboot stuff (so media before the 8th Doctor's movie in the mid '90s) and it was insane anytime any of the fan media from that popped up. Doctor Who cosplay photos from 1970 will change a man. Sitting there, wondering what those teens-now-retirement-age-adults are up to. How much of their original fandom is gone... Some Classic Who episodes/media only survived because dedicated fans recorded it and kept it safe. The BBC wrote over or threw out original episode reels from the '60s and '70s. Their GG Vastedge... It can be recovered, but it will never be whole again.
I wish there was less petty arguing in fandoms. It makes it hard to want to record what's happening in the moment. In 2043—20 years from now—how much of what we're talking about and making now will be archived? How much of it do people feel should be archived? I think it's all important, honestly. Fandoms are such a uniquely human experience and Guilty Gear's is fascinating for how closely it's managed to close the gap between its Japanese and English-speaking communities, and for the large amount of LGBT people in it.
Tumblr, Livejournal, Dreamwidth, Twitter, and Neocities are not permanent things. If you love something, make copies of it and copies of those copies. Rehost things, keep records. Think about the city of dead links and deleted Tinypic image hosts. Some of the GG stuff we have now only exists because the original poster 22 years ago kept copies in two places.

Get to know you: Sims Style
Ty for the tag @executables-sims. ^^
What’s your favorite Sims death?
idk this time, whoops. I haven't had a sim die in my game except by old age for a while. 🤔
Alpha CC or Maxis Match?
Both? Is that an option? Both. Really, I like aspects of both and so I blend both in my game. Alpha hair and clay hair, maxis match objects and realistic objects, whatever, if it fits in my game I'll use it.
Do you cheat your sims weight?
I used the SimBlender to change some of the models fit states on my last download post; otherwise, no.
Do you move objects?
I move so many objects, baby 😎
Favorite Mod?
My enormous hacks folder makes this hard to answer, lol. I'll shout out Epi's Baby Personality mod, b/c finally I'm getting some sims with more than 0 to 1 nice points born in Middleground again.
First Expansion/Game Pack/Stuff Pack?
It was Pets. Because I've always been an animal lover and it came out right after I started playing.
Do you pronounce live mode like aLIVE or LIVing?
It's still LIV mode and I'll still die on this hill.
Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made?
Made? Idk, I don't often make sims to play (I think I picked Jackie from Far Valley last time), so I'll show you my favorite born in-game sim!
Tumblr media
is anyone surprised (if you're new here, that's Clara Blanch)
Have you made a simself?
Yeah, but she no longer exists in my sim bin and no one gets to see her.
Which is your favorite EA hair color?
Black? I guess? Idk, I don't really have a favorite hair color.
Favorite EA hair?
Hmm, I don't remember what I answered last time I did this one. I think the little half-up ponytail from Seasons.
Favorite life stage?
Is it a cop-out if I say everything besides the infant stage? (Does that one even count? They're basically potatoes.) Playing this hood for so long, I've come to enjoy playing sims through each of their life stages. Toddler and kid are cute; teen stage is fun because I get to explore their personality and interests more, and ofc there's budding romances for sims who are into that; adult stage, I get to build their lives and see what their own family turns out like; and elders in my game usually get to relax and savor things once they retire, and spend a lot of time with their family and friends and hobbies, which can be a nice change of pace.
Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay?
insert both is good gif from @executables-sims's post here
Are you a CC creator?
Sometimes!
Do you have any Simblr friends or a Sim Squad?
Yeah, though the concept of a sim squad is so funny to me for some reason.
Do you have any sims merch?
Nope
Do you have a YouTube for sims?
Nooooope. I like to watch some simmers, especially speedbuilds (shout out to @kayleigh-83 and @nervosims for their great speedbuild vids!), but no one would enjoy me flitting back and forth between seven different things at once, lmao
How has your “Sims style” changed throughout your years of playing?
Play style or aesthetic style? They've both changed over time. Gameplay wise, I really only stick with Middleground and my rotational play now, whereas I used to start (and abandon) a lot of legacies, tried at least one BACC, just random sims that were fun to play. Aesthetically... hmm, you know, I'm not sure this has changed *that* much. Here's Clara circa 2011:
Tumblr media
I use more matte skins now, and the style of clothing I download has probably changed the most, but I could absolutely recreate this pic without downloading anything new, including the CC stuff in the background.
Who’s your favorite CC creator?
Don't make me pick one!! If you're really interested, check my sims pinterest in my pinned post, I'm sure there's patterns there.
How long have you had Simblr?
*checks archive* ...Ten years next May, yikes!
What expansion/gamepack is your favorite?
Hmmm, I'm going to say Apartment Life this time. I've really been enjoying playing witches lately, and it added a lot of buy/build items I like. Or maybe Uni??? No, AL it is.
Tagging, uhhh, I'm a little late so sorry if you already did this and I missed it!: @isimchi, @tvickiesims, @episims, @anachronisims, @sushigal007

Alexander Leslie, the Earl of Leven died April 4th 1661.
Leslie’s birthdate is unknown, he was born circa 1580 illegitimate, the son of a Captain at Blair Castle and a mother sometimes described as "a wench in Rannoch" At an early age, Alexander was fostered out to the Campbells of Glenorchy. The fosterage bond was strong and still written about by Leslie into the 1640s. Indeed, it was this link that brought Leslie into the orbit of the House of Argyll as Lord Lorne, the son of the marquis of Argyll was also a Glenorchy fosterling. This relationship perhaps explains the presence of Campbells in the same regiments as Leslie in Sweden, most notably Captain Charles Campbell (Karl Kammel), whose portrait hangs to this day in the beautiful Skokloster Castle on Lake Mälaren.
Leslie was a soldier who plied his trade very well serving in the Dutch Army before being offered a captaincy in the Swedish Army by King Gustavus Adolphus and in 1622 he raised the Vermlands Regiment for the King. He spent 30 years in Sweden, rising to the rank of Field Marshal before retiring in 1638.
But he was not finished with soldiering, in 1639 he was made Lord General of the Army of the Covenant, approaching 60 he was no spring chicken in those days. He faced Charles I at Duns (this is the origin of the rhyme 'There was a Crooked Man' see below), where a price of £500 was put on his head. To me his greatest victory was when captured Edinburgh Castle with a thousand men, not losing a single soldier. He went on to march into England in 1640 and defeated the King’s soldiers at the Battle of Newburn. They held Newcastle, obtaining a stranglehold on London's coal supply. Charles I had no choice but to agree to a truce, under which the Scottish army in northern England would be paid daily expenses, pending a final treaty of peace.
To raise the necessary funds Charles had to call the Long Parliament, thus setting in motion a process that would lead to the outbreak of the English Civil War two years later. In 1644 another victory came when he commanded combined armies of Scottish and English at what is said to be the largest battle fought on the British Isles. Leslie's reputation, guile and discretion were frequently noted and he was much admired.
His army held Charles I as a prisoner for a time before handing the king to his Presbyterian allies unaware that these would soon lose power to the Independents. He stood his ground though occupying the north of England with his Scottish soldiers refusing to hand over control until all his men had been given the back pay they were due. The final instalment of this came in January 1647 after which Leven marched his army back across the Scottish border.
General Alexander retired after this and took no part in the battles that saw Cromwell's army invade Scotland. During these times Cromwell had him arrested and held in the Tower of London for some time, until he was released on providing a bond of £20,000. He was again arrested in London but Christina, Queen of Sweden negotiated his release.
Sir Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven died in 1661 at Balgonie Castle, Fife in his late 70's a good age at any time, let alone in the 17th century.
When you look back at all of our Military men through the centuries Alexander Leslie is certainly a man who can stand proud with them all, he’s often overlooked due to the circumstances surrounding the wars of the Three Kingdoms and the way Charles I was executed after Leslie handed him over to the English.

hello esteemed intern. I bring food for thought. my partner (whose ygo knowledge is all from me) asked me if I thought Kaiba would play a merciless meta deck if he were a real person in tournaments circa 2023. I said "probably to prove he can, but he wouldn't enjoy it." do you have any thoughts on the matter? or perhaps some speculation on whether DM in-universe could ever reach the million-chains-one-turn-fatality brokenness stage?
i must confess i have negative knowledge about the card game IRL. but i can answer in the abstract: kaiba would play any deck just to prove he can play it and win with it, but if offered the choice, he'd say "fuck off i love dragons" and choose his beautiful sexy fish lizard over anything else. we have SEEN him do this.
however i have no doubt in my mind that in-verse duel monsters reaches insane heights of complexity and some random nobody whoever from ARC-V could probably stomp on yuugi, atem, and kaiba alike in about three turns but kaiba retires to a private island at the age of 32 or dies in the 5Ds explosion with yuugi or he's in aaru drinking ancient egyptian margaritas for all eternity so he never has to worry about that

I'm interested in Deimos, in general, care to ellaborate on them?
(what's their taste favorite food?)
YES ABSOLUTELY (bit of a long one again, sorry!)
Deimos, as previously stated, is the Embodiment of Human Fear - human fear specifically, being a result of rather than a wielder (as all the embodiments are really) and only coming into existence once homo sapiens became a thing (twice), but he is the fear by all accounts. Some miscellaneous stuff: 1. Essentially retired by this point in terms of his title. The Embodiments as a whole used to be a lot more 'around' per se, but the lot of them all kind of split off and humans do all the fear-mongering for him now, which is both fascinating and sad.
2. Bit of a bastard (/aff), likes to poke fun in his own eloquent way but knows when to back off. Maybe backs off a little too often, he prefers to avoid conflict when the option is available. Can and will read anyone like a picture book made for five y/o's and is a huge Shakespeare nerd (which probably has something to do with a chance encounter in London circa. 1592) 3. He's gone by countless names and forms, and the very notion of sticking to binary gender is laughable, (though he/him is the latest preference,) but 'Deimos' kind of became the default after Locke threw it at him as a nickname and it stuck 4. He's fond of referencing pop culture, (something of which Locke has no hope of ever understanding,) but it's either pop culture thats slightly too old for the current age or slightly too new. Slightly too old is self-explanatory, but what I mean by slightly too new is that since its naturally ingrained in him to pick up on the social patterns of humans, he will slightly nudge something forward in the public consciousness attuning to those patterns that will inevitably pick up in popularity because he finds it incredibly amusing. 5. Alas, he can't take credit for TikTok trends 6. Literally radiates terror to anything in a five mile radius that isn't dead. When he and Locke used to meet up in various points in history, they'd meet at around midnight to early morning as to not alert the local population, which unfortunately had the additional consequence of freaking out the local wildlife. Locke had to reason with the outraged birds that they could sing at dusk instead, saying that its just like morning but backwards. It took much convincing every time. and a hefty bribe of seeds. 7. Found the Woods a little while after he and Locke split up for the last time. To his knowledge, this vast stretch of wooded area somehow exists in several places simultaneously all over the globe while also not technically existing at all, looking at a decent map. Those that enter with good intentions exit, and those who enter without seem to blip off the face of the earth. It's usually pretty silent. And theres a big hecking house plop in the middle of it in pristine condition, looking wildly different in appearance depending on who's looking at it - so naturally he sets up camp in it and stays there for the next 300-something years 8. HAVE SOME CONCEPT ART, he does little things with his appearance every now and then for fun (colorful markings, scales, runic symbols, that sort of thing) but generally keeps up the base appearance of not quite fitting in seamlessly with reality, like a memory blurred around the edges.
Tumblr media
the odd cross where his face should be is to remind myself where the heck he's looking lmao (he likes dressing casual-fancy because it makes him feel sophisticated) 9. He was close with another embodiment of fear early on in his existence - Phobos was moreso the reaction to fear and wasn't restricted to just humans for Some Reason. The two of them haven't spoken in ages though, for good cause. 10. He was debating reaching out to Locke for a while before they ended up in the woods themselves- despite his own interests, he's always preferred to let them do what they wish, especially given the extenuating circumstances 11. However, these extenuating circumstances say nothing on a plethora of curious children dragging the android in to stay a while (12. he doesn't really need to eat, and he has to fashion a whole digestive system for that, but Deimos does have a fondness for sweets - pastry items, chocolate, you name it. He'd also never admit it in front of the children ever)

A VERY DESCRIPTIVE PROFILE OF YOUR MUSE. Repost with the information of your muse, including headcanons, etc. if you fail to achieve some of the facts, add some other of your own!
Tumblr media
NAME: Hriob Riebe Zagel, past incarnation was known by Krakonoš/Rübezahl depending on the region, other past (known) incarnations include Gammal vän Kunskap, Vǫlundr, Unferth, Fergus MacRoich, and Humbaba of the Cedar Forest. 'True' Names and identity are extremely important to Hriob, not only due to his Fae nature.
NICKNAME: Being of Fae nature, nicknames are both important and paid little attention to. Hriob has been known to others as Rob, Robby, Hiro, 'Oh no its You Again', and a variety of similar nicknames. On rare occasion, Hriob will 'borrow' one of his predecessor's preferred aliases, 'John', when he wishes to remain as anonymous as possible.
TITLE(S):  Hriob's more proper titles, againLord of Fantastic Weather, Prince of Gnomes, King under the Mountain, The Brewer of God-Booze, the Lonely Forest Sage, Herr Erlkönig
AGE: Apparent physical age is set somewhere nebulously between 27 and 31. However, due to a number of factors, including a non-linear experience of passage through time and space, and extremely reduced aging rates from multiple factors, Hriob's 'True' age - discounting his past incarnations entirely, is closer to over a hundred years at least but still unknown even to him. With his past incarnations, he is at least well over 4,000 years (with Humbaba being recorded during the 3rd Dynasty of Ur circa 2100 B.C.E.) with estimates going as far as over twice that time frame.
SPECIES: Human-Fae Hybrid. Specifically, Hriob is a Greater Fae Lord - a being on par with the likes of King Oberon and Queen Titania - with incorporated traits of other magical entities, inhabiting a human body with a number of small 'tweaks' as symptoms of his long-term presence within it. He can transform into a far more bestial, Chimeric-looking form when emotionally charged or in dire circumstances, but he tends to prefer being 'as human as possible'.
SEX: Male
NATIONALITY: Czech/German/Polish. Exact percentages are, if known, not disclosed publicly.
INTERESTS: Nature, animals, science (especially physics, biology, metallurgy, and computer science), philosophy, culinary arts (especially baking and brewing),
PROFESSION: Normally, Hriob is 'self-employed' - running an entrepreneurial enterprise selling alcoholic beverages of his own design through a craft-brewing business, specializing in magically and alchemically over-charged varieties of such, but overall he considers this a 'side-hustle' in the long term: a surprisingly profitable hobby but a hobby nonetheless. His true 'profession', such as it is, is a Servant of Gaia - the Collective Life Force of the Planet(s), a Scholar of the Arcane, and a self-made Humanitarian worker specializing in problem-cases involving those tied up with the mystical world.
This varies but generally holds true for other verses: One verse has him effectively retire from his self-imposed jobs, Another has him shift focus to Education specifically as well as Vigilantism, but there is a Specific Timeline where he expands his one-man efforts into a full, highly specialized and exceptional organization of roughly-like-minded individuals.
BODY TYPE: The best description for his figure is trapezoidal, meaning he is somewhat top-heavy with broad, wide shoulders, but despite being rather stocky and solidly built he is not perfectly square either. In regards to musculature he fits the 'Strongman' typology, being large and not especially tone in his physique but far from 'overweight' - instead being covered in large, thick layers of softer, 'working' muscle.
EYES: Soft Slate/Stormcloud Grey. Have an Icy Azure coloration in the right light, either from the presence of a tapetum lucidum in his retinal structures, ambient glow from use of magic, or both.
HAIR: Very dark Red hair, more like the dark crimson of drying blood than what most people consider 'red' hair. This shade darkens and saturates further in the presence of bountiful ambient life and/or magic, and conversely lightens/washes out as the area around him becomes more 'dead' in either respect. His hair style is essentially all-but-untameable bedhead with wavy, almost feathery locks reaching as far down as mid-neck at their longest.
SKIN: Very pale and light skin, marred with many old scars of all kinds, but especially those left by stab and slash wounds. The hands in particular are rather calloused and rough, from countless kinds of activities including cooking, woodworking, metalworking, rock climbing, leather-working, and handwriting.
POSTURE: Usually upright and strong, almost tree-like, with a penchant for expressive, animated arm-sweeping when excitable. Has a bit of a slouch when sitting somewhere for too long.
HEIGHT: 7'10". Transformed 'Monster' state reaches 15', 17' when antlers are counted, with a wingspan over 45' from tip to tip.
VOICE: Hriob has a low, deep baritone for his normal speaking voice, but has been known to reach low tenors and deep double-bass at times when pushing the limits of his range. While extremely loud when shouting, his average tone often comes across as both soft and breathy, yet oddly resonant and clear to listener's ears.
While there are multiple possible voiceclaims for him, ranging from Villie Valo of HIM to Yoann Lemoine of Woodkid, but at moment the best fit is Vincent "Jake" Jones of the band Aether Realm.
SIGNATURE OUTFIT: While variations exist for most any given timeline, most often Hriob sticks to a simple formula with his clothing; a nearly-full-body underlayer, with comfortably warm or potentially reinforced clothes on top, ending with a notably large cloak and walking stick of some variety. His secondary outfits almost always are some variety of formalwear or suit, though some verses reverse the priority of both outfits.
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Verse dependent. Some verses allow for limited polyamory, but generally he sticks to single-target devotions.
COMPANIONS: Verse dependent. At present in most verses he has three different Familiars bound to him; an Owl, a Swedish Valhund, and a Piebald Bull Moose.
ANTAGONISTS: Verse dependent
STRENGTHS: Kind, gentle, strong paternal instincts, takes promises seriously, extremely potent empathy, Physically powerful, durable, and enduring to superhuman levels, extremely quick reflexes, highly adaptable, intelligent, and cunning. Master of many forms of magic and related arcane topics. Effectively immune to disease, toxins, and poisons.
WEAKNESSES: Chronic Interventionism, prone to manipulating people even if with good intentions, emotions can run rampant even if honed with logic, powers and strength of power/health are all co-dependent on the presence of ambient life and magic around him.
FRUITS: Hriob primarily favors berries like blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries, as well as citrus such as Grapefruits and Blood Oranges. Other fruits of note include Pomegranates, Apples, figs, and cherries.
DRINKS: Herbal teas of many varieties, especially self-made blends. Black and Green teas are secondary to herbal blends, but not unappreciated, with Chai, Oolong, and Earl Grey being close favorites among those varieties.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: Hriob is supernaturally immune to the effects of alcohol, but nonetheless heavily prefers most form of beers, especially Mead, as his primary form of beverage outside of teas. He is equally decent with wines and other harder spirits, with Rum being a standout favorite among those, but for the most part he prefers lighter grain-based alcohols... with the seasonal exception of a heavy focus on Eggnog around the Holidays.
SMOKES: Hriob does not enjoy the smell of any kind of smoke, save perhaps incense or woods used to cure or roast meats. Tobacco and Marijuana both are hard passes for him in such a form.
DRUGS: Hriob does not touch pharmaceuticals or recreational drugs outside of Alcohol, in no small part due to his effective immunity to nearly all of them. His
DRIVER'S LICENSE: Hriob, for several reasons, has almost unanimously been disallowed from operating any vehicle of any kind, but generally prefers walking anyways. For long distances, he generally uses his mastery of Space-Time Magic to effectively teleport himself to where he needs to be directly. If in an Urban setting where appearances need to be maintained, he will use Public Transport.

Just want you to know that your Pseudo-Democratic Valinor post gave me the mental image of Master Samwise Gardner, formerly Gamgee, High King Of The Noldor.
I'm not even mad, that's hilarious to me.
I mean, by the early Fourth Age, the politics of Eldamar are definitely shaped by:
comfortable peace for longer than many people remember
old family feuds that are maintained partly out of real grievance, partly as a hobby
absolutely everybody knows absolutely everybody else, including all newborns
care for simple growing things (as well as, admittedly, elaborately constructed palaces made entirely of gemstones or something)
So...yeah, being High King in early Fourth Age Tirion is probably very much like being Mayor of Hobbiton! Sam would do fine. He came here to retire, though, so he wouldn't want to do it for long... Fortunately, when they semi-accidentally elected Frodo immediately upon his arrival in Valinor (and Frodo really just wanted to retire), they hastily passed a new law stating that, while the usual term for High Kingship is 100 years, in the case of more change- and weariness-prone mortals, it would be one year only.
(How was Frodo "semi-accidentally" elected High King of the Noldor? Well...
Over the years, the High Kingship has become a primarily ceremonial role, though the High King is the only one allowed to declare war and/or blasphemous rebellion on behalf of the Noldor, and might be called upon to decide judicial or moral arguments that lesser kings dispute. Most centuries, the position is held by Arafinwë, on account of historically famous common sense, unassuming but raw badassery, and the tendency of the general Noldorin populace to hew stubbornly to the line of Finwë in leadership positions. ["General Noldorin populace" being at this point roughly defined as, "all those who register to vote for and respect the authority of the High King of the Noldor", with established legal complications involving where people live, what guild they are or are not part of, and also most parts of the political system are experimentally changed every 500 years on average...but the High Kingship remains, because, essentially, everyone is more comfortable with a proven-responsible referee.]
It's usually Arafinwë, but because it's increasingly ceremonial, sometimes someone else is elected as sort of a popular award of great recognition. A painter named Helyanwillë was elected after unveiling her mountainside-sized mural of the Ainulindalë, to gaze upon which brings an echo of the Great Music to mind. The three-elf team who cracked the secrets of generating and taming lightning to run through wires and power things like dishwashers were jointly elected in TA 1200. There was a brief run of electing the old kings of Beleriand circa the 5000th anniversary of Dagor Bragollach: Fingon had a good term, Finrod threw some amazing parties, and then Turgon, after acting exasperated but tolerant in the whole run-up to his election, turned around and exerted the High King's right to not be ceremonial, and redesigned and remodeled the entirety of Tirion, and much of the surrounding infrastructure.
The people elected Arafinwë again after that.
[To be clear, Fingolfin is also around, and probably elected High King once or twice...as a vacation from his usual job, which is whatever title is given, by appointment or election, to the person who is actually doing politics and managing the function of the government. Every couple millennia when they invert the political structure to see what happens and Fingolfin has to win his way to the top again, it's like a pumpkin full of red meat thrown into his enclosure. His chief competition in this is Satarissë, second-youngest daughter of Finrod and Amarië, who ruthlessly leverages her unprecedented levels of Everyone's Favorite Baby Princess power for political advantage.
Every formal governmental structure includes unwritten assumptions about norms, and the Noldor's generally center around an assumption that Fingolfin will be in the upper echelon of management while Arafinwë is the safety net of common sense (eg, "Doom means Doom", "killing is always bad", "only try to 1v1 a Vala when you have immediate backup.") When Fëanor is one day returned from Mandos, people are going to SCRAMBLE to codify those unwritten rules before he breaks them all (again).]
...So, everyone knows the Ringbearers are coming soon, that Galadriel is coming home at last and Elrond is coming home for the first time and also little mortals called hobbits are coming, hobbits who defeated Sauron, which everyone is ??!!?!!! over. And either the timing works out to have an election or they decide to throw out the usual schedule, and the debate is: who do we honor first, Galadriel or Elrond?! Galadriel, our long-lost princess, ever-bold and much favored among the Sindar and Silvan with whom she made her home; we must welcome her! Elrond, heir to so much, host to so many, eagerly awaited by so many he has lost or never got the chance to meet; we must welcome him! Ooh, or what about the hobbits, I mean, they [one of them??] actually defeated Sauron, surely that's worthy of a crown...
The eager, excited debates start the second Barad-Dur hits the ground and the wise and foresightful see a change in the world, confirmed when Círdan sends word ahead [someone sailing earlier? A message in a bottle carried by Ossë?]
Then Findis, daughter of Finwë and Indis, publishes her most recent philosophical dialogue with the Powers of the World. Like many before, it is an account of a recent conversation [eg, yesterday] with Mandos on matters of Fate, Justice, the roles of Elves, Ainur, and stranger things in the Great Music...punishment and pity, forgiveness and forbearance... It concludes, though Mandos entreats her to stop, with her declaration that she is done waiting for a resolution that will never come, she is done tolerating a sentence that is already twice as long as Manwë gave his brother, without opportunity for repentance and reformation; a new Age of peace is dawning and she is willing to risk a little danger in it - so if Mandos doesn't release her half-brother and nephews in the next 100 years, she will find a way to cast her own fëa into utter dissolution in the Void; let not just Mandos but Manwë and Varda hear her words, and Eru hold her to them!
...And before anyone has fully processed that, Elrond, Galadriel, and the hobbits arrive, and on the boat with them, they've brought Maglor. Some people, knowing Elrond either in his youth in the War of Wrath or in his wisdom in later days, aren't surprised that Elrond did this, but Galadriel?!
In the ensuing confusion, the Younger Mr. Baggins election campaign slips through to victory, to the surprise of all and to Frodo's tired and frankly embarrassed dismay. Someone reassures him that it's just ceremonial, except for the authority to declare war, and he just needs to officially "re-appoint" Fingolfin to do the actual governing. This reassures Frodo very little.)
(A few hundred years later, some people are like, "hey, you know, Celebrimbor has been managing his terrible older relatives really well, and obviously his Rings came in CLUTCH for the whole Third Age. We should totally elect him--" To which Celebrimbor says, "oh Lord to Whom All Birds are Sacred, please NO, do NOT do that." To which his supporters says, "alright, let's get Huan elected as an honorable stand-in" and they almost, almost pull it off, but lose out in the end because their candidate a) isn't very good at giving speeches, and b) already has a full-time job being hunting partner/parole officer for Celegorm specifically, but probably he keeps an eye on all the whole Oath-bound family.)

B I O
childhood & adolescence: kaia grew up with a single mother in the bronx. her father, whom her mother didn't really speak about often, passed away just months before she was born. from a young age, it was quite difficult for her to deal with the fact that she grew up without a dad. she absolutely adored her mother, but being teased by other children for not having both parents in her life caused her a lot of inner turmoil. it didn't help that she was a rather awkward looking child - as most people go through their ugly duckling stages. despite being a shy, introverted girl, kaia had a very short tempered fuse - a trait that she inherited from her mother. her peers assumed that her quiet demeanor would make her an easy target for bullying, but she quickly proved them wrong after getting into a scuffle here and there; scuffles where she primarily came out on top.
her mother, tired of being called to her school for her fighting bullies, decided that she needed to redirect her short fuse into another avenue; which was when she introduced a ten year old kaia to music. her mother was an amateur musician in her youth, but retired and laid her music dreams to rest when she got pregnant with kaia. it became quite obvious that the music gene was passed onto her, because she took to it like a fish takes to water and fell in love with the art of music.
by the time she was fifteen years old, kaia had somehow landed herself a record deal and was placed in the lineup of america's next big girl group - KYC; the acronym standing for kaia, yolanda and carrie. three young girls with big voices. they took the country, and the world, by storm and became pop-r&b sensations by the time kaia was eighteen years old. and if she were being honest, she couldn't deny the fact that she loved it. she loved the fame and fortune that came along with being a singer, and she knew that the feeling would never die down or go away.
early & mid twenties: KYC lasted for five years before the trio decided to part ways in order to pursue their own artistic avenues. yolanda became a producer and did behind the scenes work. carrie became an actress. and kaia? she continued on the music path, debuting as a soloist and pushing her fame to the next level. awards, accolades and other accomplishments began swarming in, and for quite some time she loved it. she loved performing, giving her all to music and pleasing her fans as well as the general public. that is until she began to realize what a toll it was taking on her mental health and psyche. always being followed, never having a moment to herself, always having to live up to everyone's expectations. it was tiring and mentally draining. by the time she was twenty five and released her fifth solo album (her label had been working her like a dog, pushing her to release something at least once a year), she was done. she didn't want the fame anymore. she had experienced it, basked in it, and was over it. ten years of being in the spotlight was more than enough for her. she released her sixth album, her farewell album, on her twenty sixth birthday and hasn't looked back since.
current day: kaia has been living in south korea for two years now. after moving to the country for a change of scenery and to be closer to her cousin, tasha, kaia's been happier, healthier and calmer. gone are her anxiety attacks and worries of public scrutiny. while she still does get a little attention here and there, as well as occasionally being photographed or asked for a selfie or autograph by fans who recognize her, she's living a rather quiet and unassuming life in south korea. she's landed a job as the head vocal coach at canvas labs and enjoys her work there. although she can be a bit of a hard ass and very tough on the idols when it comes to their vocal training, it's only because she takes singing very seriously and wants them to be the best that they can be - and she doesn't want their poor vocal skills to reflect badly on her.
C O N N E C T I O N S
ex ( multiple ): kaia has had a few significant others in her life; some of them she parted with on friendly terms, others not so friendly.
fwb ( multiple ): self explanatory.
true friends ( multiple ): people that are actually friends with kaia because of who she is, not who she used to be.
music mentee: this person is interested in picking up a few music lessons and vocal coaching, and kaia can't help but give them a helping hand.
best friend / platonic soulmate: self explanatory.
gaming buddy ( multiple ): self explanatory.
sense of calm: one of the few people that can calm kaia down when her short fuse explodes.
sibling figure: kaia has taken this person under their wing as a younger sibling of sorts. she dotes on them, fusses over them and overall just babies them.
instigator: this person loves to push kaia's buttons until she bites back, because they love seeing how feisty she gets.
note: if you can't find anything to your liking here, we can always brainstorm!

Over much of last calendar year, I managed to read through the entirety of the celebrated newspaper comic strip For Better or For Worse (prior to Lynn Johnston's proper semi-retirement which led to this weird rehashing of strips from decades earlier in the timeline whose process I don't completely understand and didn't feel like getting into). In other words, I was reading all the way through all of the FBoFW comics on the archives on GoComics from 1979 to 2008. I briefly brought this up back in May actually. Since I finished a little while ago, this isn't as fresh on my mind as it was, and anyway I've been spending too much time off-task lately and have a backlog of other things I want to talk about on this microblog, so although I'm going to try to keep this from getting too long I do want to jot down some of my thoughts as I did when I finished reading through Luann a few years back.
(Warning: this got quite long anyway.)
FBoFW was a part of my life growing up, firstly because I began reading it in the newspaper circa 1996 (although I remember considering it one of the less entertaining, "grown-up" strips at first and don't think I was regularly keeping up with it until sometime in the early 00's), and secondly because it was my mom's favorite comic strip (apart from perhaps Peanuts) and we had several book collections of FBoFW (mostly from the earlier years) around the house. Reading through this archive helped me fill in all the gaps, including many of the comics in the last couple of years of the strip's life when I was living away from my parents in college.
1) The two parents of the main Patterson family, Elly and John, remind me a ton of my parents now, looking back. The reason my mom loved the strip was of course that she related a ton to Elly (both stay-at-home moms of around the same age, although my mom didn't start having children nearly as early). Elly's brother is even similar in ways to my mom's brother, who also plays the trumpet. I was telling my mom this when I recently visited her, and she took it as a compliment as she likes Elly (I like Elly too but she very visibly has flaws especially in the earlier years of the strip's life). I was more taken aback at how strongly John reminds me of my dad, his personality in general I think particularly in his love of "getting away" and enjoying hobbies, making things, and doing repairs on the side of a very stimulating but sometimes taxing job; trains and building train sets aren't really my dad's thing, but my dad's hobbies are of a very similar flavor. (John however is an even more visibly flawed character, even more markedly during the early years.)
2) There is a certain undercurrent of... nastiness?... in the gags of FBoFW in the early years. I didn't really remember having this impression before, maybe because it was normalized to me when I was younger or times have changed or something. Leaving aside John frequently expressing sexist attitudes and cracking hurtful jokes about Elly, there's one particular example of this which sticks in my mind as it's in direct contrast to how my (otherwise quite similar) family operated when I was growing up: Elly's cooking. My mom did all the cooking too, and we all complimented her on how great it was. Elly does all the cooking and all we get is one crack after another about how much everyone dislikes it: the children prefer "the stuff from the can", while John is constantly rude about how low-quality he thinks it is. (Apparently it's bad to make casseroles a lot or something.) And the bemusing thing is that the joke never seems to land completely on the children and John for being so unappreciative: the strip is sympathetic to Elly for trying her best, but it's kind of implied (without being outright clarified) that Elly's cooking is objectively sub-par. In this one regard, FBoFW echoes a more traditional norm in comic strips where the comedy is derived from everyone being bad at every (often gender-based) role they're given (see The Lockhorns for a particularly tiresome example). There is pretty much none of this unpleasant tinge to the comic in later years, and to me this was an improvement.
3) FBoFW follows an arc similar to that of Luann (which I talked about frequently in my Luann post linked to above) where (1) the earlier period of the strip feels more like a dysfunctional family sitcom where each of the characters is dysfunctional in the way expected by their traditional role; (2) the family is an "everyman" family where, for all its issues, each person's flaws and problems are considered the "average" ones to have with nobody having any kind of extraordinary trait (exception: Lizzie sucking her thumb into late childhood and being treated with a contraption to keep in her mouth; later exception: April suffering the trauma of nearly drowning and feeling like it was her fault that the family dog died after rescuing her); (3) eventually we see that all the other families in the strip's universe are more severely dysfunctional in non-average ways; so (4) by the later years, the main family is treated as the model family that everyone outside it wishes they had. In FBoFW's case, we have Lawrence raised by a single mother after his father abandoned them, Gordon's father being an abusive alcoholic, Deanna's mom being extremely controlling, Candace's upbringing being completely dysfunctional (I can't remember exactly why), Becky somehow having a similarly damaging background due to her parents' divorce, Weed's parents being super wealthy, absent, and not seeing him as a person with his own goals... the list goes on and on. The Pattersons, like the deGroots from Luann, have become almost the ideal family by the final 5-10 years or so.
4) Feminism plays a major role in the background culture shown through the dynamics of the characters in the first several years, and only in the first several years. John's colleague and sometimes-friend Ted is shown as the quintessential chauvinist pig, while John himself has a chauvinistic streak that he later grow out of, and this supplies plenty of fodder. Reading the first several years of the comic is worth it just for getting a flavor of the common discourse around feminism and changing gender roles from 1979 to 1982-ish.
5) Similarly, reading the devastating (and at the time extremely controversial) arc about Lawrence coming out as gay in 1993 is also very educational. What floored me on reading this in 2022 was not the hostile way Lawrence's stepfather initially reacted, but how Lawrence's lifelong best friend Michael reacted: in an accepting way but only after kicking things in anger and rage at how Lawrence has a terrible unspeakable condition that Michael never imagined in his worst nightmares anyone he actually knew well could possibly have.
6) The comments on GoComics under each strip are, as I mentioned in the post I linked to at the very top, were generally of very low quality. (I thought it wouldn't be possible to get any lower, actually, until I more recently switched to reading Baby Blues from GoComics and discovered I was mistaken!) Perhaps the most interesting content in them was frequent debates, in the later years of the strip, over the morality of each supporting character. What is quite striking to me is how much persistent hate there was for certain (male, intentionally sympathetic) characters. John got the most hate of all; during the first few years he somewhat deserved it, but later on it just seemed that some people were trying to see the worst in him (one persistent commenter, who is clearly older, very un-PC, and openly anti-woke, repeatedly made it clear that he loathed John with a burning fire and thought he was a terrible husband throughout). What took me aback more was how critical everyone was of Anthony, who the cartoonist clearly wants us to think of as a really sweet, gentle guy perfect for Elizabeth. A lot of people wouldn't let him off the hook for his one really poorly-timed moment of telling Liz to "wait for me [to divorce my wife so we can be together]" within an hour of rescuing her from a violent sexual assault, but at least one commenter concocted arguments for why everything Anthony ever did was terrible. There was one and only one character around whom all commenters could rally in hating, though: Mike's mother-in-law Mira Sobrinski. It was simultaneously gratifying and disturbing to see the set of regular commentators, usually so snipey towards each other, teeing each other off in long comment threads where they virtually "cooperate" in setting up cartoonish ways for Mira to suffer.
7) Very sad events take place in FBoFW, rather controversially for a newspaper comic of the time, I think (I know Charles Schultz was appalled at the writing decision that the family dog was going to get killed off). The characters are pretty much never shown grieving or crying over them (Elly and her brother sort of take their mother's death in stride, nobody actually cries during the dramatic arc of the dog dying, etc.). The strip avoids wallowing in pure sadness. But some of these arcs can be intensely poignantly emotional. The sight of April's pet rabbit drawing its last breaths in her arms touched me more deeply than the more dramatic death of the dog, in fact. But what really gutted me more than anything else wasn't even a death: it was Grandpa Jim's severe decline due to strokes. I remembered it happening at the time the strip was coming out and not being so bothered by it, but as someone slightly older now, the sight of someone becoming a rigid husk on the outside of their former self, with all of their long-term memories and feelings still intact but very difficult to express, just really gets to me. Here is an example of a strip that makes me start to choke up every time.
8) Lizzie is intent, upon entering first grade, on getting her ears pierced like all the other first-grade girls. What?! Has this been normal for 6-year-olds since the 80's and was I just not paying attention when I was in first grade a decade later? On a related vein, a few years after this, Lizzie is mortified at having to get glasses because then she'd be "the kid with glasses". There were... quite a few kids with glasses (including me starting in 4th grade) in each of my classes from mid- elementary school on; why is this treated as such an abnormality?
9) With certain exceptions like Lizzie's lingering habit of thumb-sucking, each of the Patterson children's development is supposed to model the normal emotional development of your average Joe Child/Teenager. One thing that struck me as being considered absolute and universal by the cartoonist in teenage culture was the boys' sudden obsession with cars from the age of 15 or so. It was shown with Michael, then with Elizabeth's male peers, then again with April's male peers, that at a certain age boys are really into girls, then suddenly they're so into cars that they forget entirely about girls (in one strip which stretches the usual standard of realisticness), Michael runs into his girlfriend Martha who he's been completely infatuated with for years and is still dating and momentarily forgets her name because he's so preoccupied with checking out cars. This is not at all how I remember male teenagerhood, but maybe I'm just really atypical (it was not considered a given that I'd ever get a car or even a driver's license as a teenager, and in fact I didn't get my license until 20 or my first car until almost 26).
10) There's a point in the late-middle part of the strip's history -- I forgot to note the year, but it's abrupt and maybe around 20001-ish -- when the cartoonist becomes fond of daily comics being exactly five panels long. I remember this being jarring enough that I noticed it back when they were coming out in the paper, as well as reading through the archives 20 years later. It's interesting that this became such a strong preference of Lynn Jonston's: it's very rare for newspaper comics since 1950 (and distinguishes FBoFW stylistically from others) and feels rhythmically awkward and exotic in much the way that 5/4 time signatures in music do.
11) Those noses. Ugh, those noses. I mean, specifically of the Patterson kids. Little ovals right below the eyes that don't resemble the noses of the either parent or of hardly any person of any age I've encountered, and which each grows out of by full adulthood (April, being more of an early bloomer, grows out of this as a preteen). I have always been irrationally annoyed by this artistic quirk and could write a whole post on it, but that would be time none of us could ever get back again so I won't.

was writing down some lore notes about kneve & wynnie in LA, especially when they're middle aged/elderly uhmmm here
they finally get a nice little house in one of the neighborhoods in southern LA by the time theyre older adults and move out of their broken & cramped apartment! yay!
wynnie retires at around the age of 68 (circa 1963). she then volunteers at an old folks home for a couple days of the week to do something with her time.
kneve's nightclub singing, band, & recording gigs dry up by the time she's 45 (circa 1937), so she begins doing seamstress and laundering work for all the women in her neighborhood/apartment complex for some cash, and also finds a job at a hotel lobby as a desk woman. with the great depression and everything work was hard to find for her for awhile, but wynnie's nursing job was pretty steady, with a few pay cuts, of course.
just because kneve stops doing musician work in nightclubs doesn't mean she doesn't love a party, however. whenever she has some extra cash to spare for a drink or two (so not 24/7...) she'll drop by her old stomping grounds to see the fresh faces getting a taste of the LA nightlife.
kneve eventually is able to reconnect with her brother and sister, as well as her nieces and nephews. kneve's niece, lola reyes-roach and her kids, helps take care of her, as well as her "best friend and lifelong companion", wynnifred, of course, in their old age during the 1970's when they are both in their 80s and need some help around the house.
eventually, kneve passes on of complications from bone cancer in 1979 at the age of 87. wynnifred lives to the age of 97, eventually passing peacefully in her sleep of old age. lola discovered her the next day. wynnifred sat with kneve as she passed on in her room at an orange county hospital.

Earl Moran - "Marilyn Nude" - Circa 1960 - Brown & Bigelow Calendar Co. - Moran moved to Las Vegas after retiring from his calendar work for B&B and produced a series of nudes, mostly of his favorite model Marilyn Monroe. Moran lived a long life to the age of 91, passing away in 1984. An amazing artist, and his series of nudes at the end of his career might have been some of his best.

WA Watch: Rushmore (1998)
I figure this is me and my nephew in about 8 years
Watched:  07/16/2023
Format:  Streaming Amazon
Viewing:  Unknown
Director:  Wes Anderson
Recently, I was watching some old Bugs Bunny cartoons, circa 1940, and I was surprised to see the name "Charles M. Jones" in the credits.  While "Chuck Jones" is synonymous with WB animation, he's really associated with a certain artistic style and flair that is characterized in certain styles of background, character design and with his comedic timing in everything from "What's Opera, Doc?" to The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.  But there was his name in plain text.
He had not yet timed how long it took an anvil to fall or for Wile E. Coyote to hang in mid-air before plummeting for maximum comedic effect.  He hadn't quite gotten the rise of an eyebrow or a sly look to the viewer.  But.  It's there.
Jamie was the one who requested a watch of Rushmore (1998) a film we saw together way back at the Arbor IV upon its release.  And we've watched a number of times over the years.  And, for her, it was an academic exercise in "what was he doing in 1998?  and how does it true up to what's there in 2023 with Asteroid City?"
It's interesting how Anderson springs into a form we all would have been fine with here in 1998 and with his second feature (after the excellent Bottle Rocket).  He's locking in on some of the themes he'd return to (certainly distant, bad dads), certain camera shots/ edits, formal dialog fit more for a 20th century short story than a film in the naturalist mode, aesthetics of symmetry and retro-ism.
It's also curious to ponder how much of the Wes Anderson story that Owen Wilson occupies.  The two were roommates at the University of Texas, and Anderson - maybe UT's brightest star in film - did not actually participate in the film program, but got a Philosophy degree.*  Bottle Rocket was a deep partnership between Anderson and the Wilson brothers and he'd co-star in the film as well as co-writing and appearing in Royal Tenenbaums.  And, of course, he appears in numerous other Anderson pictures, including French Dispatch, which I haven't seen yet.
I assume the pacing of events means Anderson and Wilson wrote Rushmore while in their mid-20's to late-20's, and while there's certainly a level of goofiness to the proceedings and it is, in part, about a middle-aged man in a juvenile spat with a 15-year-old, there's some great character stuff that rings even more true here as I roll towards 50.
I don't know that Anderson could do Rushmore again.  Maybe.  He's never quite given up on teen geniuses, including underperforming teen and adult geniuses.  He's still working through dead parents, bad parents, indifferent parents.  He's still invested in messy romance treated as a matter-of-fact.  I'm not sure a studio would be as ready to fund a movie about a teen and teacher with a complex relationship in the last 20 years.
But, in general, there's nothing  - to me - about Rushmore that doesn't work.
I'm glad it's shot in Houston.  Bleak, wintery Houston in all its no-zoning-laws glory and mix of industrial mess and bucolic park-like environs.  I love that dumb town.
And, of course, it really gave the world Jason Schwartzman and a new view of Bill Murray.  Co-star Olivia Williams has remained feverishly busy, appearing in American works, from The Sixth Sense to Hyde Park on the Hudson (reteamed with Murray).
But the film also has Brian Cox, briefly Connie Nielsen, Luke and Andrew Wilson, and the late Seymour Cassel.  Sara Tanaka and Mason Gamble seem to have retired from acting - but I think Tanaka is a cardiologist now?
Anyway, 25 years later, the movie still works as well as it ever did, and at this point, it's much more than a curious artifact of Anderson's early work - it's clearly pointing the way he's headed.
*Little tip for you brainiacs like me who burned through 5 years of college and panicked in their 4th year and also got a history degree
