SUBLIME CINEMA #629 - THE LIVES OF OTHERS
When asked in an interview how he prepared for the role of GDR Stasi captain Wiesler, the late Ulrich Muhe simply said ‘I remembered’. He was an East German actor and activist who himself was spied on and betrayed by a former wife; he didn’t have to travel far to evoke the perfect performance he delivered in this masterpiece.

FREIER FALL (2013) dir. Stephan Lacant With a promising police career and a baby on the way, Marc's life seems to be right on track; then, he meets fellow policeman Kay. During their regular jogs, Marc experiences a never-before-felt sense of ease and effortlessness, and what it means to fall in love with another man. Torn between his family and his new feelings for Kay, Marc sees his world careening more and more out of control. Suddenly, his life is in free fall and Marc realizes that, try as he may, he can't make everyone happy; least of all himself. (link in title)

SUBLIME CINEMA #632 - DAS BOOT
I love submarine movies, a kind of claustrophobic sub-genre: Run Silent, Run Deep, the Hunt for the Red October, Crimson Tide, the Abyss... I’m well into seeing people trapped in sardine cans, going mad and reckoning with human nature while the pressure outside the hatch threatens to engulf them all.
And especially this German film from Wolfgang Peterson, which is a complete classic and a real nail-biter.

COMING OUT (1989) dir. Heiner Carow Philipp, a closeted high-school teacher is dating a female colleague, Tanja, to keep up appearances. One night, by 'accident' he stumbles into a gay bar, meets and promptly falls in love with a young man named Matthias. Transformed by this love he is no longer afraid to face up to who he is. This was the last East German film released to the public prior to the German reunification, and the only gay-themed feature film made by DEFA. (link in title)
