Ms. Codex 1233 is a pretty amazing manuscript. Originally written in the early-to-mid 15th century, it was used continuously through the end of the 18th century. Written in Cologne and probably used by the canons in the Cologne Cathedral, this notated breviary (a liturgical book containing the canonical hours - daily prayers - with musical notation) includes notes and additions made up to 1794. It also includes splatters of candle wax and one page that got a little too close to a candle!

Maybe church music would be cooler if they wrote songs like Sleep Token or Ghost.

At the rainbow mass
Last week was Pride week here and it ended up in a rainbow mass at the church on the Sweden side.
Some hymns ("Jumalan kämmenellä" gave me nostalgia tears...). dance performance from local dance school. And the church's band also played few songs. They covered Loreen's Tattoo at the end.
There I thought what I've been thinking for a longest time. Tattoo is quite a boring song. Structurally. Okay sounding, but doesn't give much emotion.
Almost wanted to shout "Play Cha Cha Cha instead!" XD

As easter rapidly approaches, I have a Tip for string musicians. The #1 thing I've learned as a violinist who frequently plays 2nd/lower harmony parts with organ & brass is to completely disregard any dynamics, and play fortissimo all of the time. No one will hear you if you play mezzo forte, mezzo piano, and especially piano, and it will really mess with your confidence when you're standing next to your mom who played trumpet afterward and she's getting tons of compliments and you're getting none because no one could even hear you over her and the organ. So yeah. PLAY OUT!!!! Use open/higher strings as much as possible!! Brass is LOUD, and most organ stops are meant to sound like strings, so you need to play as loud as possible to be heard. After a few times, I got the memo and just played super loudly, and got compliments after! (not as many as my mom still, but that'll happen when you have a mother who is basically a professional-level trumpet player...)

I'm kind of into this hymn text about transcendence, gender, and God
...published by a male Episcopal priest in 1990.
Wondrous God, more named than known, give us, firm and certain grown, grace to doubt what we surmise, lest we miss the glad surprise when we find your truth exceeds all the forecasts of our creeds. Pregnant Silence, lively Calm, Singer of creation's psalm, great "I AM" of burning bush: still resist our urge to push till you fit the names we choose, shadows of the light we lose. Save us from proud, empty claims in our zeal to give you names. Let our notions be expressed not to limit but suggest views that icon-like disclose splendor more than we suppose. God not female, God not male, God for whom all labels fail, Truth beyond our verbal games, Life too vast to bound with names: from vain wordlust set us free to embrace your mystery.
Carl P. Daw, Jr., from A Year of Grace, 1990.
And he went to my seminary! That's neat.

SING A NEW SONG (or 14!)
Tuesday, May 16th, 7:30, Snow Recital Hall at BYU-Idaho. Come join in singing some of my original new tunes using forgotten hymn texts from the original 1835 hymnal of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, compiled by Emma Smith in answer to the Lord's request of her in section 25 of the Doctrine and Covenants.
If you know anyone that you think might be interested, please share this information!
We just held some rehearsals this weekend and I've got to say it was thrilling to hear these hymns brought to life by some very talented folks helping to introduce the melodies and accompany the singing.
It's is worth a watch even if you can't make it in person!
The event will be streaming live at this link: https://www.byui.edu/music/events/watch-live
This is the second event in the ongoing Michael Wahlquist Spring Semester Extravaganza(TM LOL), following the smash success of my prepared piano concert last month, available soon on YouTube.
The other two events coming up are:
June 6th: concert featuring my diverse and eclectic chamber and electronic music
July 10th: World Premier of my sacred oratorio Redeemed from the Fall, about the revelation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Adam and Eve after the Fall (with text from the scriptures).
