Why I don't like Unity
There's three reasons, basically, besides my personal inability to get any custom character assets into Unity, Unreal, or Godot.
Let me tell you below the readmore.
Reason #1: it managed to fucking bluescreen my system just trying to start.
How do you fuck that up? I download an installer and run it. This gives me a launcher. From there, I'm supposed to install the actual product I wanted to begin with. That's bad enough, to be honest. But then the fucking launcher managed to break so badly, I had my first BSOD in several months. With all I do to my poor laptops, I so very rarely got crashes like that it honestly threw me the fuck off.
If the launcher is gonna play like that, forget about installing the actual product.
Reason #2: CPU pegging up the ass.
On my previous laptop, attempting to run basically any Unity-based game would peg the CPU, all cores, until the poor thing ran so hot within mere minutes, it'd commit preventative sudoku. Maybe if I was lucky, I'd get a chance to set all the things to "lowest", and that might let me, I dunno, play long enough to get through the goddamn tutorial?
And I'm not even talking about state-of-the-art 3D games, but simple 2D games with low-resolution pixel art. Why would those run a dual-core at 200% until it fucking kills itself? Makes no sense.
Now, Phil Fortier of Icefall Games is an acquaintance of mine via SCI shenanigans, and when he released Snow Spirit (soon to be rereleased as part of Chronicles of Cascadia), I lamented to him about how his use of Unity would mean I couldn't run any of his stuff. So Phil looked into it and found a Big Fucking Thing to optimize. This basically makes Phil's SCI games the only things made in Unity that I can personally trust won't Do That.
Reason #3: About those 2D games...
I'm gonna dip into my Twitter archives for a bit and repost some stuff for this part.
*wavy flashback effect*
This is Angel Jump, a simple little arcade jumping game that's available on itch.io:
Tumblr media
It's delightfully low resolution and has like four seconds of audio all added up. Can't be more than a few MB, depending on which sane development framework they used, right?
33 MB, actually. Because Unity. Let's see how it breaks down:
Unity main exe: 623 KB
Main game assets file: 1.19 MB together
A folder full of support DLLs like terrain and cloth: 7.17 MB, 90% or more of them never called because this is a 2D pixel-art game.
Unity's default resources: 3.41 MB. Mind that of these, only the splash logo is actually used because Angel Jump was made in the free edition.
Mono embedded runtime: 2.61 MB, and each game gets its own copy, much like how Electron apps each have their own copies of Chromium.
And another 17 MB for the Unity Player.
All in all, 33 MB of files for a game like that. Why? Because Unity is a bloated crapsack, I'd conclude from a cursory study like that. Let's compare that to some other games.
This is Elevator Girl, which is not on itch.io.
Tumblr media
It has a lot of different animations and three fairly long background music tracks. It's only one file, 18.7 MB. I'm willing to bet most of that is the BGM, but I can't confirm it because it's just the one file.
And just for some historical perspective, the entire Crystal Caves trilogy is 1.31 MB, including some chaff. Commander Keen 4 on its own is 740 KB. Now, Keen and Elevator Girl both have OPL soundtracks, but the latter's is probably streamed.
Noxico is only 1.25 MB to download as a .7z file. Its only optimization that I myself actively apply is that I crunch the PNG files. The rest is text, and since the game uses a .zip file by another name as a game data source... yeah. That's a cheap win.
Now, back to Angel Jump. I went through the game's own resources to see what size it could conceivably have if it was not made in Unity. 54 textures, ten of them actually used. Tiny font stored in a weird way, possibly for distance field trickery which has no business in a 2D pixel game if you ask me. 921 KB of WAV files, high-quality bleepity-bloops, two of them jingles. 4.22 KB of PNG files, crunched like Noxico, for all but the creator's logo and the font. 973 KB for a copy of SDL, and I'd estimate at worst two MB for the main EXE.
The entire Angel Jump game could be no more than 4 MB and a half-dozen files, It's actually 33.2 MB, 92 files.
There's a more general computer programming issue that this reliance on Unity for even the simplest, smallest games seems to spring from: the bigger and better the computers get, the more lazy the developers get. Only have like four MHz, 640 KB of RAM and, what, 720 KB of diskette space, and no guarantee of an HDD? Better make the most of it, developers! But now the pressure's off and there's no more reason to exert any effort into keeping small games actually small.
*sigh*

Is LA Tap Water Safe To Drink in [year]? (According To Data)
Tumblr media
Wondering whether you can safely drink LA tap water? When you compare the quality of the tap water in LA, how does it compare to the water in other cities and states? And does Los Angeles tap water contain any dangerous contaminants above state or national guidelines? You'll find the answers to these questions and more in this guide. 📌 Key Takeaways: - LA tap water is considered generally safe to drink. - Like all US water supplies, Los Angeles tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). - The five biggest problem contaminants in LA tap water are arsenic, bromate, chromium 6, radiological contaminants, and TTHMs (trihalomethanes) - but these are all present at acceptable levels according to the Safe Drinking Water Act. 🚰 Can You Drink LA Tap Water? Yes, you can drink tap water in Los Angeles, since this water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency - as with all other municipal water supplies in the United States. LA tap water is considered safe and clean and doesn't violate any state or national standards for particular contaminants. LA's drinking water quality isn't perfect, but the contaminants present in the water are all found at lower levels than the EPA's Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs). With that said, there are debates over the safety of even trace amounts of these contaminants in drinking water, and the Environmental Working Group has set its own Health Guidelines, of which 9 of the contaminants in LA's tap water exceed. As an independent organization, the Environmental Working Group doesn't have any legal power over water utilities, and the EWG Health Guidelines are simply that: guidelines. But the EWG believes that, due to the potential dangers of certain drinking water contaminants, the MCLs set by the EPA aren't stringent enough. So, based on the EPA guidelines, tap water in LA is legally safe to drink. But the EWG believes that it isn't. We'll discuss the 9 contaminants affecting Los Angeles water quality later in this article. It's also worth noting that the EPA doesn't regulate all contaminants that get into national tap water supplies, including the drinking water in LA. For instance, the EPA only regulates 90 chemicals, but there are thousands of chemicals used in various manufacturing processes, many of which run off into our surface water sources. 👨‍🔧 Check out our post to learn which states have the worst quality drinking water. 🗺️ Where Does the Tap Water in LA Come From? Most of the drinking water imported into Los Angeles is from the Los Angeles Aqueduct system, which is located in Mono Basin and Owens Valley. Some of LA's water is also pumped up and processed from groundwater supplies. Due to the lack of open space and heavy paving in Los Angeles, there isn't much opportunity for rainwater (the little that LA has) to seep into the ground and recharge the underground aquifers. That's why a good portion of LA's water is imported into the city. LA has also recently started recycling its wastewater, which should help to reduce issues with the city's dwindling natural water supplies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdhEZZKPqWw 📉 Who Regulates LA Drinking Water? The City of Los Angeles tap water is managed by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Adhering to the EPA's National Primary Drinking Water Regulations, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power monitors more than 200 contaminants in the City's drinking water supply every year. The organization samples and tests water at various citywide locations. How is it determined which contaminants should be removed? The EPA's guidelines were produced in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The National Primary Drinking Water Regulations highlight 6 groups of contaminants that must be monitored and removed from water: microorganisms, disinfectants, disinfection byproducts, organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, and radionuclides. All water treatment facilities, including those in LA, must ensure that their public tap water supplies don't exceed the maximum amounts of these contaminants. If they do, the EPA will enforce the facility to take action against this problem - and requires proof of cooperation. Los Angeles (talk · contribs), CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons 🧪 Los Angeles Water Quality Report The most recent Water Quality Report (or Consumer Confidence Report) available for online viewing for LA tap water is dated from January to December 2021. The report isn't one of the easiest Consumer Confidence Reports to read. Some cities clearly outline the contaminants of most concern in the water, or the contaminants that have been found at the highest levels, but the Los Angeles Water Quality Report simply lists contaminants on a very large table packed with abbreviations. It appears that nitrate, TTHMs, chloride, iron, calcium, magnesium, uranium, and several other minerals were all detected in trace amounts in LA's tap water. None of these appear to exceed the legal limit. However, because trace amounts of these contaminants were detected, it means that LA's water isn't 100% pure and healthy. The Water Quality Report also shares test results for lead in consumer taps, based on 23 sites tested. In no sites was lead detected above the Regulatory Action Level (AL) - but that doesn't mean that trace levels of lead below the AL weren't detected. We suggest reading the Los Angeles 2021 Water Quality Report and deciding whether you want any further information (contact the City if so) or whether you've seen enough to know that you want to filter your water. ☣️ Contaminants Found Above Guidelines in Tap Water in Los Angeles According to the Los Angeles Water Quality Report, no contaminants were detected above the legal limit according to EPA guidelines. So, for this section, we'll look at the EWG's tougher guidelines (which, remember, are not legally enforceable), and which contaminants in LA tap water exceed these particular guidelines. There are 9 contaminants that exceed the EWG's Health Guidelines from January 2021-March 2021 (the latest data provided): Arsenic The EWG's recommended Health Guideline for arsenic, a highly toxic carcinogenic contaminant, is 0.004 PPB (parts per billion). 1.72 PPB of arsenic was detected in LA's tap water - that's 430x the recommended Health Guideline. Note, however, that the EPA's official legal limit for arsenic is 10 PPB. Bromate 0.735 PPB of bromate, a carcinogenic disinfection byproduct formed by ozone disinfection, was detected in LA water - 7.3x the EWG's recommended Health Guideline of 0.1 PPB. Again, the EPA's official legal limit for bromate is 10 PPB. Hexavalent Chromium The EWG has set a Health Guideline of 0.02 PPB of hexavalent chromium (or chromium-6), the dangerous, carcinogenic form of chromium that's often found in water due to industrial pollution and is difficult to remove with standard filtration methods. 0.586 PPB of hexavalent chromium - 29x the EWG's Health Guideline - was detected in LA water. There is no EPA legal limit for this contaminant. Haloacetic acids (HAA5)† and Haloacetic acids (HAA9)† HAA5 and HAA9 are two haloacetic acids produced as chlorination disinfection byproducts. 10.3 PPB - 11.0 PPB of these contaminants were found in LA's tap water - 103-184x the EWG's Health Guidelines of 0.1 PPB and 0.06 PPB. The EPA has a legal limit of 60 PPB for HAA5, and no legal limit for HAA9. Nitrate and Nitrite Nitrate and nitrite are forms of nitrogen that have serious health effects when consumed in excess. 1.07 PPM of these contaminants were detected in LA's water system 7.6x the EWG's recommended Health Guideline of 0.14 PPM. The legal limit set by the federal government for these contaminants is 10 PPM. Total trihalomethanes (TTHMs)† Total trihalomethanes, or TTHMs, are another disinfection byproduct with potential health effects including cancer. 26.6 PPB of TTHMs were detected in LA's water, which doesn't exceed the federal legal limit of 80 PPB - but DOES go 177x over the EWG's recommended Health Guidelines of 0.15 PPB. Uranium 3.00 pCi/L (picoCurie per liter) of uranium, a radioactive heavy metal with carcinogenic effects and other health risks, was detected in LA's water. The legal limits for uranium contaminant levels are 20 pCi/L. However, the EWG Health Guideline for uranium is 0.43 pCi/L - and LA's water contains 7x this amount. 🧫 Main Contaminants Found in LA Tap Water Again, the most helpful resource we found for listing the main contaminants in Los Angeles tap water is the EWG Tap Water Database for the City. The EWG detected 30 contaminants present in LA tap water, including: - Aluminum - A heavy metal that may irritate the gastrointestinal tract in large amounts. - Barium - Another heavy metal commonly found in groundwater due to its presence in certain types of sedimentary and igneous rocks. Ingesting large amounts of barium in water may lead to vomiting, blood pressure fluctuations, difficulty breathing, and muscle weakness. - Total chromium - Refers to all chromium compounds in a water supply, including harmless chromium-3 and dangerous chromium-6. High levels of chromium-6 in water may cause liver and kidney damage, various cancers, and eye irritation. - Disinfection byproducts - Such as bromide, bromodichloromethane, chlorate, 1,1-dichloroethane, dichloroacetic acid, and trihalomethanes, which have several known health effects, including fertility problems and cancer. - Fluoride - LA's water supply is fluoridated. Fluoride is a mineral with dental health benefits, but its use in drinking water is controversial. In excess, fluoride may cause dental fluorosis (staining of the teeth) and skeletal fluorosis (a metabolic bone disease). - Nitrite - A form of nitrogen and another contaminant found in groundwater supplies in areas with agricultural and urban runoff or municipal wastewater treatment plants. Large amounts of nitrites in drinking water can cause methemoglobinemia, a condition that affects the blood's ability to carry oxygen. - Selenium - A trace mineral needed in small amounts by the human body. Selenium usually gets into water through natural deposits, mining activity, and agricultural runoff, and may cause skin discoloration, hair loss, and tooth decay if consumed in excess. 🏢 LA Drinking Water in Public Places We know about LA's local tap water quality, but what can you expect from the water in public places, like restaurants, hotels, and bars? You can get free tap water from pretty much every restaurant in the City, and it's the same water that's delivered to homes in residential areas. Restaurants aren't legally required to serve free tap water to customers, and California is under water restrictions due to the drought risk. You should also get a good supply of drinking water in hotel rooms, and hotels should let you know if water isn't safe to drink. In this case, you should still be able to get drinkable water at the hotel bar. You'll struggle to find drinking water fountains in LA, which means you'll probably end up drinking bottled water while you're out and about. Popular bottled water brands sold in most grocery stores in the City are Aquafina, Dasani, Fiji Water, and Smartwater. 💬 Frequently Asked Questions Is Los Angeles water hard or soft? Yes, the water in Los Angeles is either hard or very hard. The water hardness in LA is around 127 PPM or 7 GPG, which is slightly lower than the state's average water hardness. Because LA has hard water, residents will likely notice the effects of calcium and magnesium hardness minerals in their water systems, including limescale buildup, soap scum, and dry skin and hair. Is it safe to drink Los Angeles tap water? Yes, according to the most recent LA Water Quality Report, Los Angeles water is safe to drink and doesn't have any violations for various contaminants regulated by the EPA. However, many people in LA choose to filter their water with a water treatment system at home (such as a reverse osmosis system) to remove trace levels of regulated and unregulated contaminants present, such as arsenic, disinfection byproducts, and nitrite. Does LA tap water have lead? According to the Consumer Confidence Report for LA in 2021, lead levels in tap water provided by the City were lower than the legal Regulatory Action Level across 23 testing locations. However, this doesn't mean that no lead is present in LA water supplies at all. We recommend testing your water for this toxic heavy metal if you're concerned. Does LA tap water have chlorine? Yes, many water supplies in LA are disinfected with chlorine or chloramine (a combination of chlorine or ammonia), so a good portion of LA's water contains this chemical. However, some of LA's water is now disinfected with UV treatment, eliminating the need for chlorination. Many water filters are capable of removing chlorine from a water supply, including activated carbon filter systems. Can you drink sink water in Los Angeles? Yes, you can drink sink water in Los Angeles. However, it's best to drink only from kitchen sinks and hotel sinks when you know that the water is safe. Other sinks, like bathroom sinks, may use fixtures made from harmful metals that leach into your tap water, so they're not necessarily safe. Read the full article

Why is capsule compatible Nespresso so expensive?
Coffee is a beverage that is loved by everyone. It is to be consumed in your leisure time. You can enjoy various brands of coffee that you will easily get in the market. You can check on the various coffee beans that are available online too. They are offered at reasonable rates and also you may get discounts if you buy them in bulk quantities. Check all the features of the brand before you go to buy any brand of coffee.
Is it safe to use capsule compatible nespresso?
The capsules from Nespresso compatible are completely safe. The differences between ground coffee and capsule coffee have been investigated by academics. They determined that the cappuccino in Nespresso appropriate cups has somewhat more chromium, copper, tin, nickel, copper, zinc, and ethanolamine than brewed coffee, not to the point where it is detrimental to health.
Why are Nespresso capsules costly? Elaborate it.
For a myriad of purposes, capsule compatible Nespresso will cost more than coffee beans. You're paying the price for the extra storage, apparatus, and personnel it takes to create mono coffee pods. Because manufacturers utilize titanium instead of polyester and implement a superior packaging technique that keeps the caffeine younger, Nespresso compliant capsules seem to be more premium than other branded coffee beans. However, we believe that in this case, the extra expense is justified in exchange for a better-tasting coffee and is also a recyclable item.

Elder Dragon Highlander
Commander is a format of Magic the Gathering that has become almost completely detached from its original premise. Much of what the format is is built upon the concept of Elder Dragon Highlander- 21 Commander damage is lethal because that’s 3 hits from an Elder Dragon, the slow grindy format built to accommodate the original 5’s heavy mana investment and limited effects.
But that was a long time ago, and the designers at WoTC have opted to attach the moniker of Elder Dragon to a number of additional cards. 21 total cards hold the name, 4 cycles of 5 apiece with one straggler at the back.
What is considered “elder” is largely to do with lore, I think, but due to its association with such iconic cards, it’s interesting to see how and what the label is attached to.
I’ll, uh….do cube something next week? I dunno. But this is the Elder Dragons.
 The original 5
Tumblr media
The first elder dragon cycle is kind of iconic of Magic in general. Released in Legends, they were the first tricoloured cards in the entire game, were I believe the biggest and most expensive cards of the time, and all represented characters from the comics that I think just about everyone forgets existed.
Tumblr media
They do not even remotely resemble modern design. Clunky is one thing, but the quintuplets are almost aberrant to what would be considered attractive Magic cards. A monstrous investment of mana in multiple colours that has a continuous upkeep of more mana, all for an arguably understatted flying creature with one extra ability. Chromium gets Rampage, a keyword that started in Legends, ended in Mirage, and doesn’t have reminder text despite being arguably confusing. Palladia-Mors gets Trample, making it arguably one of the best ones. Vaevictis Asmadi gets Firebreathing in all 3 of its colours, in case 8+3+3+3… wasn’t enough mana-shaped eggs in one basket for you. Arcades gets a bonus ability in toughness-breathing, to make up for it’s deliberately mediocre ability- the “oh cool I can use this with vigilance” eureka/fun brain moment quashed by its pointless limitation.
Tumblr media
And then, of course, there’s Nicol Bolas. Somehow one of the game’s most iconic characters, in an art rendition that makes a powerful villain look like a gentle draconic geriatric. (EDITORS NOTE: still Rad here but I just now noticed this mf has a fucking dragon nipple, wtf?) I suppose Bolas becoming so well known was inevitable, if only because it was the only one of the most popular cycles with an actually cool and powerful ability. There are currently 210 more Bolas decks than any other member of this cycle, and that difference also happens to be twice what the other four have combined.
Bolas is arguably the only one that stood the test of time, the only one to ever show up independently of the other 4. I suppose we’ll see if any of the rest do the same, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up.
(Elder) Dragons of Tarkir
Tumblr media
The titular Dragons of Tarkir’s third set (Dragons of Tarkir) were a set I was excited to see as the cards were being spoiled. The lore of the plane was interesting, with Magic stepping into a plot with time travel and finally showing us what Ugin looked like after almost 10 years of curiosity. The dragons that would become the Clan leaders had appeared previously in Fate Reforged, and the editions that we’d see as Elders- 10,000 years older and in some cases even wiser- presented a powerful and exciting cycle. Unlike with the Legends dragons, I’m pretty sure all of these saw play somewhere.
Tumblr media
Ironically, though, I’m pretty sure these were deliberately tuned for Standard rather than the format named after their typeline. Even outside of Kolaghan’s line of text that….doesn’t do a whole lot in the format, Ojutai and Silumgar were pretty obviously built to be the finishers in the Esper Dragons deck that ran them, Atarka a clear top-end for Gruul Monsters (and, eventually, Eldrazi Ramp), and Dromoka a potential menace in Dromoka’s Command-backed Midrange lists. These cards are all quite powerful, but they’re built for a different kind of game.
Tumblr media
That’s I suppose the biggest issue with the Dragons of Dragons of Tarkir, they were underwhelming. The set as a whole was fairly middling, though I did truly enjoy the draft format. I’m pretty sure the most played card in the set is fucking Collected Company, one I kind of despise, followed with Kolaghan’s Command which is just a traumatic experience for me. And while 3 of these 5 are seeing more play than their past counterparts, including Dragonlord Ojutai being literally 10 times more commonly seen than Soul of Winter, that difference is largely a matter of power (or lack thereof), the Mythic Dragonlords being obviously stronger than their Rare originals. The rare ones are arguably more fun, though, and that’s what matters to me.
 Legends…2! (aka core set 2019)
Tumblr media
Part of the theme of Core Set 2019 was the story (read: retcon so the ending of War of the Spark makes more sense) of Bolas and Ugin in their youth, which meant that we got to get updated, modern designs of the original Elder Dragons (not Ugin tho lmao). And by Modern, I kind of mean postmodern, because we’re at the point where Commander cards start getting absurd All The Time.
Tumblr media
Each of the Elder Dragons of Core 2019 (copyright WoTC 2018) have the benefits of updated design practices with 24 extra years of experience, as well as not having to have a million words on them for silly reasons like extra mana sacrifice triggers. Even Palladia-Mors, probably the weakest of them (and still pretty threatening!), gets to have flavour text hinting at a potential return (which hasn’t happened yet).
Tumblr media
When you’re designing cards like these, though, it’s inevitable that some are going to be overshadowed by others. Baby Bolas, of course, was one of the flagship cards for the set, being a transforming Planeswalker with lots of abilities that wins the game in just the most classy way I’ve seen in a minute. And Arcades took a fun niche deck people liked and blew it wide open, making Defenders into one of the most disgusting Offensive decks in a minute.
Tumblr media
But then there’s Chromium, a fairly powerful Voltron/Control finisher but not one that leads you in any particular direction. Vaevictis does lead in fun directions, but would then be completely dwarfed by the absurdity that is Lord Windgrace the same year and Korvold the next one.
Outside of a few, this cycle feels like it got kind of lost in the shuffle, and I think that’s not really that much a reflection of the cards (except maybe Palladia, the Naya Problem rearing its ugly head again), and more the greater issue with Magic as a whole just shitting out cards constantly faster than most can catch up.
Welcome to Strixhaven School of Magecraft and Sideboardary
Tumblr media
Our final cycle is the new kids on the block, the Strixhaven dragons. I suppose one way to make the definitely not Hogwarts Houses (they’re colleges, Clearly) seem important is attach a giant Fuckoff Dragon next to them.
Tumblr media
A thing I like a lot about Strixhaven as a set is how it was introducing a new Thing for each of the enemy colour pairs to do- Golgari Lifegain, Boros Graveyard, Izzet Spells But Big Ones Instead Also Treasures?. The set came with loads and loads of cards supporting each of these themes, and having Commander 2021 alongside it and associated with it means they’re well supported by that as well. But, and this is the important part, the Elder Dragons aren’t as overshadowed because they too are doing something different, even if its rather slight in some cases, on their own- but each supporting or being supported by the Dragon in question.
Tumblr media
Beledros is a Big Mana Golgari commander (normally seen in Mono-Green or Gruul) whose huge life cost is assisted by the Lifegain cards Witherbloom got. Galazeth helps ramp into the giant spells associated with Prismari while also making the alternate discard into treasure option some of those spells have a lot better. Tanazir doubles the power of Quandrix’s Fractal tokens, and makes them even more huge when attacking due to then natively being 0/0s. And I don’t really know what the idea in Silverquill is other than “Politics”, but Shadrix looks fucking cool and probably plays really nicely. It’s just a really fucking solid cycle.
It’s not really possible to tell how these 5 are going to play out- Strixhaven is still the latest Standard Set to release at time of writing. But I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the most successful Elder Dragon cycle as a whole assuming you’re looking at, like, mean Decks.
And then there’s The Other One
As part of Modern Horizons 2, cards for a set of characters from alllll the way back from those Legends stories were created- a new Dakkon, a Geyadrone Dihada, and the Elder Dragon that showed up in their story- Piru.
Tumblr media
Piru is, obviously, a reference to the original cycle of Elder Dragons, but in a Wedge colour rather than a Shard. And with an extra keyword, which is something I missed, because it makes all the difference. I had written this card off, until I realised that Lifelink triggered from the death trigger, and when this thing dies it isn’t too hard to gain dozens of life points. That’s a lot and combined with clearing the board it’s not too hard to get virtually unkillable. I love leaning into the downside from the original dragons by adding a powerful death trigger like this.
Piru released very recently, and already has 112 decks to her name. I wouldn’t be surprised if that plateaus, but it’s still rather promising. 8 mana is a lot in non-green colours, but I like Piru, and I’d be happy to see her see lots and lots of play going forward.
While 2021 has so far had more Elder Dragons than any other year, they’ve been a very promising cadre with a lot of interesting ideas going on. With that said, I’m not sure that I want the trend to continue, because the more they make (the more Elders in general, really), the less special they get. But for now at least, it looks like we’re finally getting to a good place for Elder Dragons. Only took us 27 years.

Hey, may you help me? Besides the fact that it is a big company, what’s wrong with amazon?
Hi anon!
I’m not the most educated in economic stuff, but here’s my gatherings on it!
amazon is a big, BIG company - ik you said besides that, but it is and their mono-pole position should not be underestimated. Especially considering how much money it’s hoarding, the majority not going to taxes nor back to the consumer in a different way.
data security / privacy concerns in their face-recognition and voice-assistant technology. [echo]
data collection privacy concern: amazon has its branches in so many fields (books, shipping which covers basically everything, film, audio, amazon web service / providing services, etc.) - it’s a playing field for data collection. I’m not sure if they have access to that data too when other companies use their web services though.
terrible working conditions: it’s very frequently accused that the work condition in their warehouses are bad and that their workers are overworked (a lot of pressure to be as efficient as possible). (think of the Prime Day Strikes, the way delivery drivers [x] and other employees are treated, ignoring asks for leafs during COVID [x], etc.) -- which is an ethical reason why someone might want to avoid using the service wherever possible.
They have so much influence so I think a big part of it is actually just the fact that it is a big company. They do great stuff, yes, and they’re cheap and convenient but imo if possible (aka you have the money and time) it would be nice to support other businesses too, especially local or smaller ones.
That doesn’t mean that you should order from a company that is vastly inconvenient, but most local deliveries where I live only take 3-7 days too and since we don’t use Prime, that’s usually not faster than amazon is to begin with.
While we’re at it, the same counts for other fields - like Google! - so if it’s not too inconvenient for anyone to consider: don’t use chromium based browsers (so basically, use firefox), use google alternatives (duckduckgo, ecosia, ...), don’t sign up for everything using your google account, use firefox containers for facebook and instagram, use open-source or free alternatives to pricey products (Blender instead of Maya, etc.), and stay safe <3
Not directed at you in particular, anon, just... at everyone who reads this.
I think it’s good to try and diversify either way.
but I’m also very bad economically and philosophically haha.

EDH Budget Picks: Torbran, Thane of Red Fell
Tumblr media
Eldraine is here and that means we’ve got all sorts of new generals to build around, and none (save Emry and Ayara) have my attention as much as this stout fellow. I know, we’ve already gotten some good deck techs from other creators for this guy, but I’ve got a fun build for us: Pingers. That’s right, the Prodigal Pyromancer returns to commander and with Torbran it actually has the potential to be a good deck. As usual, our list will only include cards $5 or below, and no more than three of these will be above $2.
While this deck was actually inspired by the deck played on the 25th Anniversary Game Knights episode by LRR’s Graham, I think it has far more potential than... Chromium Esper pingers? We’ll be playing a number of small damage effects that don’t do much on their own, but with Torbran that additional plus 2 will certainly add up.
#1: Cinder Pyromancer On the surface, this elemental looks quite similar to a generic pinger, but with its untap ability you can keep casting spells to machine gun your opponents’ boards away.
#2: Sulfuric Vortex While this card is already a staple in red burn decks, Torbran gives it extra efficiency. On top of its already potent effects, Torbran only adds to the damage dealt to your opponents, so you stay safe losing two life while each opponent loses four.
#3: Pyrohemia This is one of the more expensive cards on our list, but with your general in play it can decimate your opponents’ boards while leaving your own practically untouched. Even paying three mana into it can deal twelve everywhere and leave your general intact.
#4: Kyren Negotiations Even though this card can’t hit creatures, turning your whole board into hasty pingers can stack an immense damage onto your opponents out of nowhere, sometimes even snatching away an unexpected win.
#5: Orbs of Warding I know it doesn’t really play into your burn strategy, but immunity to pingers means you don’t have to worry about your opponents using your own creatures against you. Alternatively, using Urza’s Armor doesn’t grant you hexproof but does prevent Pyrohemia damage to your face and even diminish negative effects of playing Sulfuric Vortex.
#6: Circle of Flame Another protective tool, Circle of Flame keeps small non-flying creatures pointed away from you, and combined with your pingers it can even stop the big stuff.
#7: Magebane Armor It’s somewhat expensive to play and equip, but putting this on your commander gives him immunity to both Pyrohemia and board wipes such as Hour of Devastation and Blasphemous Act. With this on your general and Urza’s Armor in play, you can even sink all your mana into Pyrohemia for lethal, or at least close to it.
#8: Angrath’s Marauders Seven mana is a big investment, but stacking with your general to turn a 1 damage pinger into a 6 damage blaster can put a stopper on event the biggest creatures. Fear no Ur Dragon.
#9: Power of Fire While it does nothing on an empty board, you can at least turn your general into a pinger. The low mana cost allows you to slip it into just about any situation too.
#10: Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh Many of you may have built Chandra’s flipwalker from Origins already, or at least considered it, but Torbran gives us the nice utility of flipping her as soon as her first activation. If she sticks, that’s seven damage in a turn, decreasing to four on subsequent turns.
Torbran gives you immense burn potential in a commander, but don’t forget to include lots of draw to keep your fireslinging going. Artifacts will likely be your choice for this, and I’ll probably be doing a post on mono-red draw packages later on. You may also consider running Neheb the Eternal in your deck to turn all that big burn into big mana. Regardless of your  path, keep the flame burning. Until then, see you on the battlefield.
