The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis

Kenny is the middle child in the Weird Watson family. When his juvenile delinquent older brother starts acting in a way that their parents can't handle, the family goes on a road trip to take Byron to their grandmother, during a very contentious time in American history.

I loved this book so much! Levar Burton has a beautiful voice, and the music and sound effects in the background made this an absolute delight to listen to. I also loved that since this is a book written for younger readers, the author adds in historical context in the epilogue.

Recommended for: people who enjoy historical fiction, fans of A Christmas Story or the short stories it's based on, and young readers looking for something that is both fun and serious.

Book Review: Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis

This was a reread for me, except that the last time I read this was in 2010 and didn't fully understand it. There are a few reasons for that, mainly that I was reading it in Hebrew and it was above my Hebrew level at the time, but also because the book jumps around a bit, especially in the latter half, which was confusing for ten-year-old me.

Despite that, I remembered loving this book and, rereading it, it definitely had a significant influence on me. I also realized that it is by the author who wrote The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963, which was another childhood book I didn't fully get, but really liked. (Sidenote: It's always hard to describe how good books that are about a horrific thing made you feel.)

Bud, Not Buddy is very engaging from start to finish. The way Bud sees the world is very interesting. Truly, the standouts of this book are the characters. I really enjoyed reading about all the different characters, both from Bud's perspective and trying to think what they thought of him.

Unfortunately, I feel that the historical world wasn't as built up, which may also have led to my confusion as a child. There were no mistakes, as far as I know; I just didn't feel immersed in the world like I usually do in historical fiction.

Highly recommended, still.

There’s quite a few landmark pop culture anniversaries this month:

July 1, 1997: OK Computer released in the U.S.

In July 1997, Radiohead’s third album and magnum opus was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 25th OK Computer!

July 11, 1972: Super Fly soundtrack released

In July 1972, Curtis Mayfield’s phenomenal soundtrack to the movie Super Fly was released. The movie itself is good, but the soundtrack is a classic! Mayfield was firing on all cylinders with his brand of soul and funk. I have my copy on vinyl. Happy 50th Super Fly soundtrack!

July 12, 2002: Road to Perdition opens

In July 2002, Sam Mendes’ crime saga was released. I can’t believe that no one ever talks about this movie. Between Paul Newman’s late career best, the breathtaking cinematography and the depression-era production design, this was one for the ages. Happy 20th RTP!

July 15, 1997: ...The Dandy Warhols Come Down released

In July 1997, The Dandy Warhols magnum opus was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 25 TDWCD!

July 16, 2002: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots released

In July 2002, The Flaming Lips’ greatest album was released. I was a casual listener in the 90s and dug some of their stuff, but in 2002, my friend had this album and was heavy into it, so I heard it a lot when he brought it into work. I went with that same friend to see Beck and The Flaming Lips at the Beacon Theatre in NYC on Halloween 2002. Flaming Lips opened, then Beck was acoustic, and then Flaming Lips were his backing band! What a show. Some consider it a concept album, and whether it is or if its just a few songs, it is a definite mood album about dystopia and pondering about one’s mortality. Happy 20th YBTPR!

July 17, 1987: Robocop opens

In July 2017, Christopher Nolan’s WW2 epic was released! There’s a few Nolan films celebrating anniversaries this month. This one, I saw in 70mm at Coolidge Corner and from the minute it starts till it ends, you forget to breathe! Nolan’s ambition, innovative storytelling, and skill with actors is all on full display in this World War II epic! I have it on blu-ray. Happy 5 Dunkirk!

July 28, 2017: Everything Now released

In July 2017, Arcade Fire’s fifth album was released. It was such a polarizing album. The haters emphatically hated it. I guess I’m alone, but I thought Arcade Fire made an impressive artistic statement about living in the digital age! It was a more dance-oriented album, but had some powerful songs on it. I named it my #2 Album of 2017 and my #17 Album of the 2010s. It has accompanied me on many a car trip. Happy 5 Everything Now!

Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.

A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.

What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.

Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis

Bud has been living in an orphanage since his mother died 4 years ago when he was 6. When he gets sent to a nasty foster family, he decides to run away and try to find the man he believes to be his father.

I really enjoyed this, and I know I saw it being read by my classmates in middle school, and having listened to it now, I know I would have enjoyed it. I also really liked the call to action in the author's note at the end.

Recommended for: middle grade readers, people who enjoy history, and parents who like reading with their growing kids

23 Republican Senators & 124 Congressmen signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court asking for a 50 state ban on mifepristone, a drug safer than tylenol that is standard treatment for abortion & miscarriages, "due to safety concerns". The brief DARES to argue that banning the life saving drug would save women from 'reproductive control'. (x) These 147 people would rather have women die of sepsis than let women control their own bodies. If your representatives are on this list, call them and tell their office you will be voting against them in the next election because they asked SCOTUS to throw the US medical drug system into chaos at the cost of American lives.
