Well first of all. I appreciate you. You are so undyingly loyal, you have a bitch’s back for almost anything. And that is so rare these days. Especially on this hellsite.
I also appreciate @thebookofmags she never fails to brighten my day. Either with her long responses to my fics or just popping into my messages just because. It gives me something to look forward to.
I appreciate @laurenairay for being a bottomless vessel for joy and kindness. I honestly don’t know where she finds the grace because I feel like a half feral pit bull chained in some trailer park most of the time.
I appreciate @verdandi-storm for being awesome. They are always fun to see in my dash and in my asks (also please check out their writing!)
@hayzydayz is absolutely wonderful.
@chara-hugs is so eloquent in the tags. Most of the time. Sometimes it’s just key smashes and honestly I appreciate that too. But she is just... I don’t know she just manages to narrow in on any part of a fic that I am unsure about or really proud of and compliments it and that feeling is just really awesome.
@vitekvanecek and I are new mutuals but he writes some amazing gender neutral and male reader inserts which is desperately needed in the fandom. My support is slacking because I just haven’t had the energy lately but seriously please go share the love. We also share a love of Grubauer and his amazing fashion. Who gave that man the right to walk around looking like that?
@kotkaniemi-caufield-mom is a Canadian with indigenous heritage who really just loves the Habs. Her loyalty to her team is unwavering and I’m hoping the Habs take out Vegas for her (and really for all of those who despise that fucking trash team.
Which brings me to @meeshmo who is the only valid Vegas fan. She tolerates me bashing her team (though I really try and utilize the #fuckvegas tag to make filtering easy) but she is just such a peach and my life is better because she exist.
@bqstqnbruin Christina is just a fucking fab human who is KILLING IT in grad school (pretty sure? PhD maybe?) and is the picture of grace under fire because people think that because you’re a fan of the Bruins they can send you hate. (I’ve seen this on the few Bruins blogs I follow and it is *mind boggling*) anyway she is swell and I appreciate our chats.
PART 1
I’m a very loyal bitch until someone does something to me. After that, the loyalty is gone forever. Two loyal ass bitches for life 💖💖💖
Totally agree on the love for everyone else on your list!

Roadtrip Rewind
Where did we leave off… After Bozeman I took two days driving through Montana, South Dakota, and Minnesota to get to Minneapolis, where I met up with Zoey. We spent two nights there, one night in Madison, two nights in Detroit, one night camping in upstate NY, and one night camping in New Hampshire after a day in Vermont. The next day I dropped Zoey in Portland and drove up to boat school. A few highlights:
In Minneapolis we stayed at 300 Clifton, this old mansion in the Loring Park neighborhood that was recently restored and is now a 10-room hotel/B&B (it’s on AirBnb!). It was spooky and fun and way cheaper than some shit motels I’ve stayed in. It’s probably haunted which is a plus for me. Also there were free scones. Another thing that makes me feel like I’m getting older - I’m starting to like all the dry biscuity foods I’ve always hated (scones, muffins, biscuits, shortbread).
Tumblr media
There must have been a little cyanide in my tea
My claim to fame - we went to a camera store to get our film developed and the person who helped us shouted me out on their Instagram! 🥰 And they happened to know the guy from the camera shop in Portland where we bought our stuff earlier this summer and tagged him too, sweet small world of vintage cameras.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Golf courses are a waste of space
I love Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner so I’ve had romantic ideas about Madison for a long time and thought maybe I would want to go to grad school there. In reality it was kinda weird and sterile which is a bummer because they just announced the UW Madison Transdisciplinary Center for Research in Psychoactive Substances with a focus on therapeutic applications for psilocybin and MDMA #therapygoals
John K. King Used and Rare Books in Detroit is massive and chaotic. Loved it! We were hunting for Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici and we met two hella hot and tall employees who were very invested in helping us find the book. One wrote the title down and said he was looking to read more feminist anti-capitalist texts… Like okkkk fucking marry me and read to me in bed until the day that I die!! If I published a hot socialist bookstore employee calendar would anybody buy it?? These two guys would be May and November. I have a copy of Caliban and the Witch sitting in my AbeBooks cart with the shipping address: “Sexy Employee 4th Floor - You Know Who You Are, c/o John K. King Used and Rare Books, 901 W Lafayette Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226.” Venmo me $1 if you care to support my missed connection quest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laughed out loud…one million books in the store and this is their choice of doorstop
Our hostel in Detroit was in the Corktown neighborhood and next door was the Pink Flamingo pop-up which has been happening there every Thursday for the past ~six years. It’s basically an airstream serving a rotating food and drink menu and a cool hangout spot with music and firepits. We had a fruit plate cuz we’d been eating straight junk for days while the DJ made an impromptu and rambling fireside speech about community and the meaning of life. Near the end the airstream hostess started handing out free rice balls as an apology.
Tumblr media
After Detroit we had two long drive days to get to Vermont where we had maple creamees at Bragg Farm Sugarhouse (shoutout to our friend and former housemate Brett for the recommendation!) and caught one of the last Bread and Puppet shows of the season (if you haven’t heard of Bread and Puppet it’s a political/radical puppet theater company based in Glover, Vermont). Holy shit Vermont is so beautiful it’s like a magical hobbit land. The lady at Bragg Farm tried to recruit me to come back and work through the spring maple sugaring season, maybe I should. Straight maple syrup is the new Red Bull.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s it! I can’t believe I drove myself all the way here. Thanks to Zoey for the company and cheers to a summer of buses, bookstores, bikes, and backpacks.
Tumblr media
Before I literally burst into tears
Maine is so beautiful and boat school is keeping me busyyyyy. Does anybody know what the hell a woolen is? I think I’m going to need some here. More soon! Send letters or junk mail my way at 440 Old County Rd, Pemaquid, ME 04558.
XOXO

90 and 32 for Loki and your choice?
Is there really a choice? lol
Pregnancy Fic + Unexpected Virgin
...hoo boy.
Okay, so Loki decides one day to go to Midgard. No real reason why. He’s just bored.
While there, he meets some mildly interesting people, including a young woman about to graduate college named Jane Foster. She’s just escaped an incredibly painful blind date and Loki further helps her avoid the hapless human by pretending to kiss her in an alleyway. Her hot breath on his face actually makes him think of kissing her for real, but that’s a ridiculous notion. What kind of prince would he be cavorting with mortals?
Regardless, as they talk about life and Jane’s plans for grad school, he finds himself intrigued by her. She’s highly intelligent for her species and while her grip on the Bifrost could not be more basic, if anyone was going to figure it out, he’d say it was her.
Over the next month or so, Loki starts visiting Midgard and Jane more and more. As far as she knows, he’s another student like her home for summer break. As they grow closer, Loki thinks more and more about what it would be like to kiss her. Finally, the day comes and by Odin, can she ever kiss.
Of course, there’s no way something like this can last. Even putting aside Loki’s greater longevity, there are so many people out there he’s pissed off. If they know a vulnerable mortal woman has caught his eye, no way they won’t take advantage.
That’s how Jane ends up a hostage of one of Loki’s many enemies. He is able to save her and kill the perpetrator, but he realizes now that their relationship can only end in pain. He knows now just how deeply in love with her he’s fallen. He loves her so much that he can find it in himself to erase every trace of him from her memory. Everything from their first meeting to the day they first kissed. He gives her one more kiss before he leaves her, pouring all his love and magic into it. Along with a wish that one day, somehow, their paths would cross again.
And so, Loki leaves her. Jane wakes up the next morning in her apartment with no recollection of her harrowing adventure or the prince she once loved. It’s as if nothing ever happened.
Except as the days go by, Jane starts to have some odd symptoms. She’s weirdly sick in the morning and feels faint during the day. She’s moodier than usual, only wants to eat food she hates and gets random headaches.
There is an obvious answer that is also completely impossible. Jane is not ashamed to admit she’s never had sex (like it even matters how long someone waits). In fact, she hasn’t dated since that one awful blind date a few months ago (every time she thinks about it she feels sad for no reason, and she still can’t figure out why). Days later, the symptoms persist. As a joke, she buys a home pregnancy test. Not like it’s going to mean anything.
The test comes back positive.
Jane buys three more. All positive.
She goes to the doctor, who confirms it.
Pregnant.
Now, this is a major problem because again, Jane has never had sex. She rarely drinks and hasn’t been to a bar recently. A few guys in her department like her, but there was no way they’d ever do something like that to her. Right?
The time frame of conception is determined. Jane recalls a day during that time when she did go to the bar, and now that she thinks about it, her memory of that week is a bit spotty...
At that point, Jane, being the determined woman she is, decides she can’t worry about what might’ve happened right now. She needs to think about what is happening. The obvious answer is abortion. That or adoption. How can she, a grad student going into astrophysics of all things, take care of a child? It’s not that she doesn’t want kids, it’s the idea never even crossed her mind because she’s just that focused on her goal.
Now, motherhood is an actual reality. It’s still early enough for her to make an appointment at the clinic. She’s online researching, still unsure if she’s actually going to call, when she feels something. At first, she thinks she’s imagining it. She feels her stomach and there it is again. The tiniest movement. Maybe not even a movement at all. Maybe just a heartbeat...
At that moment, something fundamental within Jane changes. She closes her current web search and opens a new one on pregnancy guides and nearby baby stores.
A few months later, Jane’s daughter is born. While it’s definitely a bit on the nose given the circumstances, Jane can’t resist writing Christina on the birth certificate.
It’s not as hard as she thought it would be. Erik and her mother are both huge helps. They immediately fall in love with the baby and watch her while Jane is at school and studying. By the time she gets her degree, Christina is five and has spent the last few years providing constant encouragement for her mother. She walks at Jane’s side during her graduation. She gets a little stuffed bear with a cap and gown while Jane gets her doctorate.
The next few years are a bit hectic. Jane tries to give Christina as much stability as possible. They live in one place for a few years while Jane teaches at the university and builds up goodwill with the staff in order to get the grant money she needs to fund her research. Her efforts finally pay off when Christina is about to turn nine. Jane sets up her lab in New Mexico and they move there for the summer. They might stay longer depending on what Jane finds, but she doesn’t tell Christina that just yet. She’s already complaining about how boring Puente Antiguo is.
To entertain herself, Christina reads and writes about all sorts of fun adventures she could be having. She’s never showed her mom this, or anyone for that matter, but she has a few strange little talents no one else seems to have. For example, she can sometimes move things around without touching them. One time, she swears she turned a mean kid’s hair blue when he was bullying her and her friends. Snakes seem to really like her. She can’t talk to them like Harry Potter, but they do follow her sometimes. There are tons of snakes in New Mexico, but she’s not too bothered by it. They all seem pretty nice.
Soon Darcy arrives and she more or less bonds with her new boss’s kid. When some guy in town starts hassling Darcy, Christina asks one of her snake friends to make him go away and the guy never comes back. Another guy makes fun of Jane on the street, calling her a crackpot. He rather suddenly trips over nothing and knocks a few of his teeth out.
Jane does notice a lot of this stuff, but not once does she think to connect it to her innocent daughter. Meanwhile, Christina is well aware that she’s the one doing this. Somehow or other, she does have powers no one else has, and she’s starting to realize just how strong those powers might be.
It all comes to a head with the arrival of Thor. Jane went out with Darcy and Erik to watch for an incoming storm. Christina had to stay home, as this could be dangerous. So, of course, she snuck along in the back hidden under a blanket. She’s right there when Thor falls from the sky. Terrified that they’re all about to die, Christina unleashes a HUGE wave of magic. Big enough to disrupt the bifrost and send Thor flying into a nearby rock formation. He hits his head hard, and as he is now human. this is not an insignificant injury.
In fact, when they get to the hospital, the poor stranger has already slipped into a coma. Jane is left to comfort her hysterical daughter who won’t stop blaming herself for what happened, She finally admits the truth about her powers to Jane and demonstrates by summoning a pen from the nurse’s station. Jane is shocked and has no idea what to do. Christina interprets this as her mother being scared of her and runs away. Jane chases after her. By the time she turns the corner, Christina is gone. Jane searches the entire hospital, but her little girl is nowhere to be found.
Now comes Loki. He’s been pretty out of it ever since losing Jane. Though it’s been close to a decade on Earth, that barely feels like a week to him. Now Thor has been banished, he has some truly uncomfortable questions to ask Odin about his origins, and to top it all off, one of his old enemies has just randomly appeared with a little girl in tow.
(NOTE: I honestly have no idea who the enemy would be. If I actually wrote this I’d just figure it out later)
His enemy mocks him for growing soft and not protecting his progeny like he should have. Loki has no idea what the hell this guy is talking about until he gets a better look at the girl. Her midnight black hair, terrified blue eyes, that face just like a younger Jane.
Jane...
He hadn’t looked in on her since he left. He just couldn’t bring himself to. Now he wishes to all his ancestors that he had. The enemy issues a challenge, daring him to come and save his newfound daughter. He disappears with Christina, and try as he might, Loki can’t trace where they’ve gone. He has a few ideas, but he’s going to need some help.
And he’s going to need to correct some old mistakes as well.
At the hospital, the police have arrived and are searching for the missing girl. Jane curls up in the waiting room, thinking of everything that led them to this point. If only she hadn’t accepted the grant money. If only she’d gone somewhere else to search for bridges. If only she’d paid enough attention to her own fucking child to know that she was literally psychic. Or magic. Or something!
While she cries, a shadow appears over her. When Jane looks up, a tall man with dark hair and eyes like Christina is watching her.
It all comes flooding back.
She remembers Loki. She remembers their kiss, that monster thing that kidnapped her. Loki saved her, and then he told her they’d never see each other again. Then she woke up at home as if from a dream and it was like he never existed at all.
But he had. She knew now that she had, and she had a daughter to prove it.
Which still begs the question of how. She knows now that they definitely didn’t have sex. Loki’s theory is that his magic somehow infused with latent abilities within Jane herself (she might actually have a small percentage of Asgardian in her) and created a child born of them both. It’s a tenuous idea at best, but it’s all he has right now, and who even cares how Christina was conceived. Point is, she exists and she’s been kidnapped and Thor is in a freaking coma now and can’t help them. Time to gear up and save their kid!
Not going to go into too much detail here as I’ve already written way too much. Basically, Loki teaches Jane to harness the magic within. She already knows a few knife tricks from self-defense classes, so Loki gives her a new knife that never dulls and is virtually indestructible. When she’s ready, they strike out to find their daughter in the enemy’s secret hideout. At some point, Thor wakes up and rushes to help his brother. His willingness to go to a far off planet and fight to the death for a child he’s never met makes him worth of Mjolnir again at just the right time. Loki and Jane rescue their little girl, who instinctively knows her father the moment she sees him. The enemy is defeated and now they’re free to start over and live as the family they were always meant to be.

Black Coffee
Tumblr media
Summary: Coffee aroma surrounds you as you prepare for a long day of studying in your favorite coffee shop. Your focus is shattered by a handsome stranger demanding a very large favor-pretend to be his girlfriend.  Pairing: Bucky x Female Reader Warning(s): Cursing. Innocent fluff. Bucky’s eyelashes. Word Count: 1,383 Beta Reader: My darling honey bun, @supersoldiersruined-me Notes: Congrats Christina, @stuck-y-together, on 1K!!!! My prompt was “I was trying to get my morning coffee, not get kidnapped by some strange man.” Prompt is bolded. Age wise, reader is a grad student or older. No cradle robbing, Bucky. Coffeeshop image credit to @saturday-studying. All other images from google.
You’ve been at Quay 4, your favorite coffee shop, for about a half hour now. It’s taken you this long to set up your study space exactly how you need. You managed to snag a booth located near the giant windows; lending you a gorgeous view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River. Your laptop is plugged into the socket, your textbook lays open, highlighters and colored pens organized in rainbow order, and your notebook open to a fresh page. Set off to the side is a large coffee alongside an equally large cinnamon roll. You were ready for the long haul. This exam was still nearly a week away but you wanted to be prepared. Nothing but focus in your future.
You scowl at the window adjacent to your booth. A man was peering inside, effectively shattering your already shaky focus. What did this guy want? His face disappears from the window and you look back the blank page ready to begin.
The bell on the shop door dings. It’s staring man. He’s attempting to catch his breath while searching around frantically. Curious as you may be, it’s study time. You pick up your favorite pen when you feel the stare. Scratch that. You feel the presence. Someone is standing at the edge of your table; anxiously shifting their weight from one foot to another.
“I need your help.” You look up to see the same man who was creeping in the window. You lower your pen ready to chew him out and he takes it as permission to sit down. Not just down. In your half of the booth, annoyingly close to you. “Follow my lead and I’ll make it up to you.”
The door to the shop dings once more and the strange man’s arm shoots into the air to beckon the two men over to the booth. Your booth.
“So this is the girlfriend, Buck.”
“This is her!” He throws his arm around you.
Your brows raise on their own volition. Your face must be too shocked for Mr. Stranger’s desire cause he nudges your foot gently under the table before continuing.
“Sorry hun. I know I forgot to mention Sam and Steve were coming when you asked to get coffee. Didn’t mean to surprise you.”
“No I’m sorry. I wouldn’t have crowded the table with all my study materials if I knew we’d have company…” You pause unsure. “Babe?”
It didn’t suit him as a pet name. You made a mental note to choose a different one next time. What was his name again? Buck? Not sure if that’s a full name or a nickname. I guess you could work with it. Bucky suggests Sam and Steve get coffee, adding his own black coffee to their order so he can help you pack up. You groan internally having got it perfectly arranged only a short while ago.
“Details. My name is James but I go by Bucky. My favorite color is red. We started dating a month ago. We’re taking things slow ‘cause I have a fear of rejection. We met….we met…crap.”
“Here at the coffee shop?” You offer. You genuinely surprise yourself. You feel compelled to help Mr. Stranger. No. Not a stranger. Bucky. “For someone with a fear of rejection, selecting a random stranger to fake date seems a bit bold.”
He’s stunned but chuckles lightly. You tell him your name, nickname, and corresponding details. “I bought you a cinnamon roll and had it sent to your table asking you to chat.”
“You’re good at this. Fake date often?”
At this point, Sam and Steve have gathered their drinks from the counter and are headed back to the booth. You lean over and whisper in Buckys ear “it pays the bills”.
He’s laughing in earnest when the pair sit down. They slide a bowl sized mug of black coffee over to Bucky. “
“Where’s the sugar?”
“You said a black coffee.”
Steve brings his fingers to his face and pinches the bridge of his nose. He’s clearly heard the ensuing argument one too many times before.
“Tin man, if you want sugar it’s not a black coffee.”
“Yes it is! Sugar doesn’t change the color.”
“Just order a coffee with no cream add sugar.”
“They don’t add enough!”
Steve delicately spoons the whipped cream off his own mug and eats it while checking the weather on his phone. His disinterest in the argument at hand is comical. He ignores his friends not unlike a stoned faced parent. You’re still reeling at how passionate your “boyfriend” was about black coffee.
“Fine I’ll go get the sugar.” Bucky huffs. Sam coughs lightly, something sounding oddly like diabetes, and pulls his hand from his jacket pocket dropping what must be 30 packets of sugar onto the table.
“If you had the packets already why-”
“Enough you two. We came here to meet Buck’s girlfriend not force her to listen to us bicker.”
Your hand rests on the table, toying with the edge of a napkin. Bucky scoots his hand over from his side of the table to rest gently atop yours; fingers gently intertwining.
You look over to him but the words die in your throat the second you meet his eyes. You hadn’t had a chance to get a good look at him since this whole ordeal began.
He was handsome, ruggedly so. He has full cheeks and even fuller lips. His eyelashes are annoyingly long; the kind women curse men for. He’s wearing a plain white t shirt with a light bomber jacket thrown on top to combat the light breeze today. His shoulder length hair fell in shiny waves. You were close enough to feel comforted by the wafts of his body wash. He was expressive with his eyebrows. Wait. No. He was raising them in a slightly panicked inquisitive expression.
“Doll? Sam asked you a question.”
“God you two are gross already. Already drowning in each others eyes.”
A staccato beeping interrupts your assessment of Bucky and returns functional ability to your brain. Steve’s brows knit together as he reads a message off his phone.
“Nat needs us to help set up for that thing tonight, Sam.”
“Damn. I hoped we were off the hook.”
“It would appear not.” Steve’s standing, throwing on his jacket. “Sorry we didn’t get to chat more hun. We’ve been dying to meet you.”
“More like didn’t believe you exist-” Sam huffs as he’s met with a sharp elbow to his ribs. He feigns hurt before his expression changes to one of mischief. “Barnes, why don’t you bring your girl tonight?”
“No!” Bucky shouts abruptly. “I mean, she has an exam to study for. School comes first and all.”
Sam snatches a piece of paper off your stack of study materials. “Schedule says the exam is in four days. You think you can take the night off for some fun?”
You stutter responses with three pairs of eyes staring you down before gaining composure. “Studies have shown study breaks improve information retention… ”
Steve smiles genuinely while Sam raises a smug brow at Bucky. “Great it’s settled. See you tonight, guys.”
Once the two men are out of sight, Bucky collapses back into the booth next to you, jostling his coffee dangerously. His head is cradled in his hands as he mutters to himself.  You sip your own beverage waiting for an explanation but none comes.
“Darling?” you say in mock voice to get his attention. He startles as if you had teleported into the booth.
“You have to come tonight. If you don’t, Sam will never let me hear the end of it.”
“Hold the phone, dude. I was just trying to get my morning coffee, not get kidnapped by some strange man…” An attractive and pleasant smelling strange man.
“Let’s not exaggerate, doll. A rooftop barbeque with the Avengers is hardly kidnapping.”
Your eyes go wide. You know who the strange cute man is. How did you not see it before? If this was Bucky Barnes, Winter Soldier, they had to have been-shit.
“I had coffee with Captain America and Falcon. Cool cool cool.”
Bucky smirks at your nonchalance. “Does that mean you’re willing go eat ribs with me tonight?”
“I guess I could use a study break.”

TRIGGER WARNINGS AND THEMES- Alcohol, club dancing, chasing the girl/the guy.
Hey! Hey!
I'm ready, hey
Boy come and get me
Don't be scared
Show me what you do
Don't you know a girl
Like a boy who move
The club is your typical scene on a night like this- the end to a week of studying, stressing and trying not to lose your patience every time someone  decided to try you at work. So tonight, your best friend, Taylor, suggested that you and the other girls from your dorm go out.
That’s who you end up in Christina’s room, laughing and pripping and pregaming with boxed wine.
‘’Oooh, girl, you trying to catch a man,’’ Tiana had questioned, downing her last bit of wine from her plastic, red cup as she eyed you in your dress.
‘’Girl, no. But I feel good so I wanna look good,’’ you explained, dabbing your makeup brush with highlighter and brushing it onto your cheeks.
‘’Nah, don’t let her fool you. She’s trying to get a boo. I don’t blame her. Now that you’ve left Marcus and his ‘can’t-make-up-my-mind’ butt, you can finally get with someone that deserves. All. Of. This!,’’ Halle exclaims, gesturing to you before she slides her black heels on.
‘’No!,’’ you full on laugh then, ‘’This night is about me and my girls. Now somebody zip me up, please. I’m ready to go.’’
You’d meant it when you said that this night was all about you and your girls. You and Christina are pre-med, Tiana is double majoring in Education and Psychology, Christina is a Theatre major who works two jobs and Halle is going for Business. The days where you all get to hang out are few and far between, so you five treasure your movie days, spa weekends, and girls’ night outs.
So tonight you plan to go to the cub, eat as many appetizers as y'all can afford, dance with your girls, and have great time.
That’s the plan as you all catch a cab to the club, wait in line for an hour, and finally make it in.
It’s the plan when Tiana secures you a table, and the rest of you trek over to the bar for discount margaritas and snacks.
It’s even the plan as you, Christina,  Tiana, Taylor and Halle move to the music, belting out the songs with the other hyped up and drunk patrons on the dance floor.
But then you lock eyes with him, and your plan is pretty much forgotten in favor of your brain focusing on the fine dude staring at you from across the room.
He can’t be much older than your 23 years, you think. And if he is, he looks good. Gold framed glasses glint under the lights as he peers through them to gaze at you.His hair are in perfect dreads that you already wish were entangled around your fingers as your mouth pressed to his firm, full lips.
You don’t even know the man’s name, and he’s already got you sprung.
‘’That’s Erik Stevens,’’ Tiana calls over the music, breaking you from thoughts of this handsome stranger, ‘’We had biology together freshman year. I think that he is a senior now, too..’’
‘’Word?,’’ you respond, eyeing him again before turning back to the other four girls.
‘’He’s been staring at you all night, girl.’’ Halle pipes up, moving her hips to the music and letting ehr large, gold hoop earrings bounce as she does.
‘’Get it girl!,’’ Christina cries, hands in the air like the song instructs before she adjusts her sequin halter top.
‘’Girl, I’m not trying to get nothin’ but a good time,’’ you remind the group, smoothing your hands over the fabric of your own dress.
‘’Mhm. Tell that to somebody that believes you because we sure as heck don’t,’’ Taylor cackles, completely ignoring the guy trying to dance with her, ‘’Look, I’ll dance with you in three more songs. I’m talking to my girls.’’
He kisses his teeth but drudges away, causing her to roll her eyes.
‘’All I know is, he’s been eyeing you all night. He’s a grad student, too, so you know he’s mad smart. And-’’
‘’She ain’t trying to get married!.’’ Halle rolls her eyes, ‘’Girl, just dance with him. Ask him to dance!’’
Halle and Christina are the bold ones in the group, with Tiana a close second. You and Taylor,on the other hand, are a bit more what they consider ‘’old school’’. If Mr. Erik Stevens wants you, then he can come ask you to dance himself.
So you toss him a smile before turning back to your girls, dancing along with them. Every so often you’re in a position to see Erik with his boys, laughing it up with them before immediately placing his focus back on you. He’s cute, calm and collected, trying to look cool in the corner.
But the truth is, you need to be dancing with someone that can keep up with you on the dance floor. Somebody that’s not afraid to feel the beat as the music and the bass pump beneath their feet. Someone who’s not afraid to dance like no one is watching.
Someone who’s not afraid to move.
Erik misses half of what Darnell is saying. He really doesn't care, though, because it was probably about something inconsequential to Erik or his life. He’d actually rather be staring at you, flirting with his eyes like you have all night. The truth is, he can’t keep his eyes off of you. You move so energetically yet so gracefully. So fluidly and softly yet so powerfully. You are a force to be reckoned with, that much he can tell. He knows that if he wants to get to know you, he’s gonna have to be the first one to make a move.
It isn’t until the start of the fifth song since he spotted you  that he makes his way over, silently dancing with you as your girls ‘’Ooh’’ off to the side.
Instigators.
He wraps his arm around you as the music lulls into a softer song a ballad. You’re not sure why, but you're kind of nervous, now. Slower songs have never been your thing, but he seems to got it under control. He dances with you as if you two are meant to move together, and you don’t even question whether or not it’s a true statement.
‘’Thought you were afraid. Took you long enough to come over.’’
‘’Girl, ain’t nobody afraid. I was waiting for the right moment,’’ he tells you, causing you to roll your eyes.
‘’Hmmm.. Had you waited any longer, the club would be closed and I’d probably be dancing with that guy over there,’’  you nod to the other gentleman who has been staring at you all night.
‘’You’d taken that cornball over me,’’ he snorted, confidence laced throughout his velvety voice.
‘’If you weren’t gonna get brave and come over here and dance with me. Now don't be scared. I like a boy who moves,’’ you croon, causing his eyes to widen before he fixes his face.
‘’Word?’’
‘’Word.’’
The two of you dance together for the rest of the night, Erik showing you dance moves and you showing him dance moves. He even buys you a round of cheese sticks for you and your friends, who all coo and call him ‘’the sweetest guy’’.
‘’So, ma, you gonna let me get that number,’’ he questions about two hours later, when you and your friends are patiently waiting for your driver to come get you.
‘’Is that any way to ask,’’ you inquire , not in the mood for anything less than actual communication.
‘’I mean…’’
He can't see it in your eyes. He’s gonna have to step his game up like he did on the dance floor if he wants those digits.
So he makes a big show of falling onto one knee and proposing that you give him your number, all while your friends giggle and snap pictures and tape it.
‘’No. But you can give me your number and i’ll call you.’’
    ‘’POWER MOVE, SIS!’’
‘’Halle, I am begging you to be quiet,’’ you hear one of the ther girls shush her as Erik types his number into your phone.
‘’Don’t be a stranger,’’ he winks before heading back inside, just as your taxi pulls up.
‘’That night, when the bonnet is on and the makeup is for, you lie in bed, fiddling with your phone and trying not to overthink. Like, Erik is cute and all, but you don’t have time for any games.
But if he was brave enough to come be with you on the dance floor and to ask for your number…
You can be brave enough to make the first move and text him.
    So you do.
By the time it’s noon, you have a date set up.
And you’re more than happy that Erik Stevens made the choice to chase you.

Other Lies Excerpt: The Zoo and the Pregnancy Test
I might set Past/Prologue aside and start re-editing this one
Anyway! Here’s another excerpt from Allison’s story!
Enjoy!
Tag list: @editedandwrittenbyhannah and I nominated @thepotatowearsprada
to my tag list. (if either of you want of, let me know, ok?)
Length: 3000 words (roughly)
The next few weeks were hectic. I was able to pull my head out of my worries long enough to study for finals. Finals week fell two weeks before Maria and I’s birthday, so we started bugging Mom and Dad to do something special. We were turning 21 this year, a very special occasion if you liked alcohol. I wasn’t really a drinker, so it was just another birthday.
The campus sprung into bloom all around us. Flowers adorned every tree and bush that’d stand it. The campus lit up with color. Pink, blue, purple, you name it. The day of my Physics final, Coltin came into the room with a bouquet of freshly picked flowers for me. He hadn’t spoke to me in a week. I figured he was still a little pissed about what I said in lab. Still, we started talking again before the final. He asked me to go out with him after finals were over.
I finished off the semester, I felt, as strong as I’d started it. Sure, there was a bit of a bump in the road that had thrown me, but I got back to normal. Well… not normal. The nightmares were still happening with alarming regularity. Despite all my attempts to stave it off, I was still worrying myself sick. Most days, I ended up puking up my guts. I’d missed my period. I tried telling myself that I had just worried too much. Periods could be missed because of stress, right?
Maria dove into her studies more ferociously than I had. She’d been tripped up by what happened, too, but her classes were so much harder than mine. Intermediate Differential Equations, Intermediate Microeconomics, Linear Algebra, to name a few. I’d made the mistake of looking over her shoulder while she was working on her Differential Equations study guide. It was a math class, I knew, but I don’t think I saw any actual numbers. Just looking at it made my head hurt.
Maria was my best friend (don’t tell Jenna), and had been since we’d burst into this world, but I only just realized how much smarter she was than me. Still, she’d slacked off for a minute there trying to help me. Between that and how hard her classes were, she spent most of her home time during the last few weeks of the semester pouring over study guides and practice problems. Most nights, she fell asleep at the table, mid-problem.
Without Maria in the room with me, I couldn’t sleep. I don’t know how much of it was that we’d shared a room for forever and how much was the fact that I didn’t want to wake up from a nightmare and find myself alone. The last few weeks of the school year, I went to sleep in the living room. One morning, I woke up on the couch and Maria was passed out on the recliner. She’d covered me in a blanket before she crashed.
The week after finals, nearly a month after I woke up on the bathroom floor, I went back to the doctor for another round of tests. The day after, Mom and Dad surprised us with a birthday trip to the Memphis Zoo. Our birthday wasn’t going to be until the week after, but Mom and Dad both had grad students defending their dissertations on that day. The plan was for us to go out to dinner that night, but the trip had to be early.
I loved the zoo, let’s just get that clear. I loved animals of all shapes and sizes. Lions, tigers, snakes, spiders, it really didn’t matter to me. Except roaches. Roaches still bothered me, but every other type of animal was cool. Maria was not quite the animal lover I was. She liked the cute fluffy animals, but the creepy crawlies? Nah, she couldn’t stand them. It may have had something to do with how many times I “forgot” my pet tarantula in her bed when we were twelve. She ended up getting the last laugh. Peter (that was the spider’s name, Peter Parker) had gotten tired of Maria’s screams, I guess, cause one day he ran away. I was inconsolable.
So, the Tuesday after finals were over, the four of us got up early and climbed in the car. For once in my life, Dad let Maria and I control the radio. I think that was the first time the radio had left the oldies channel since the oldies were released. Maria put in her Christina Aguilera CD and sang along the entire trip. Every now and then, I’d join in on one of the hits, but most of the trip consisted of me staring out of the window, trying to quiet my thoughts.
Occasionally, out of the corner of my eye, I’d catch Maria give me a despondent glance. I knew she was worried about me, just like I knew my parents were. They didn’t press the issue, but they were keeping a closer eye on me. I had been hoping that once all my tests came back negative and I was in the clear that everything would settle down. I wanted things to go back to normal. Part of me knew that “normal” was a bit much to ask for, but maybe something next to normal would be sufficient for now.
I had been going to therapy every week, like Mom suggested. I was able to start vocalizing some of the things I’d been feeling, but I didn’t like therapy. I always left my appointments feeling worse than I did when I arrived. I told Mom that, and she nodded.
“It makes sense.” She’d said.
“It does?” I’d asked. “How’s that?”
“Well, if you were dealing with everything, you wouldn’t need therapy.” She had explained. “The only way to get better is to deal with things, which can be unpleasant. Ergo, if you go to therapy and actually work at it, you probably won’t feel great leaving your appointments.”
After an hour on the road, we pulled into the zoo parking lot. The front of the zoo had a beige archway fifty feet high, or so it seemed. Lining the walkway to the gates were larger than life animal facsimiles. I vaguely remembered the last time we came here. Maria and I were barely as big as the lion‘s paw. The realization that I was that small once unnerved me a little.
The zoo was packed. School was out for the year, and all the parents must have been tired of their kids already. I couldn’t get comfortable. Every time somebody walked past me, a chill ran up my spine. I hadn’t been around so many people since… I don’t even know. I kept glancing over my shoulder. Maria must have noticed cause she took my hand. I pulled it away. She frowned, but backed off.
“So, which way should we go?” My dad asked, once we were inside. Before I could answer, my cell phone rang. I held up a finger and hurried out of earshot. I could feel my family’s eyes on me.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Hi, is this Allison Evans?” The lady asked.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Hi, Allison. This is Marietta Jackson from the Ole Miss Health Center.” She said. “I’m calling about the tests we did yesterday.”
“Yeah?” I asked. I looked back at my family. Maria was watching me. She fiddled with her charm bracelet. Mom and Dad were looking over the Zoo map, planning the day’s activities.
“I have your test results here,” She went on. “As for your STD screens, all the tests came back negative.”
The pressure around my heart released a little bit. No STDs. That’s good.
“And for the pregnancy test?” I asked, my heart in my throat.
“As for that one, that came out positive. Congratulations.”
Do you ever get those moments where it feels like the world stops around you? Moments where a second feels like a minute or an hour? That’s how I felt at that moment. Congratulations? I wanted to laugh, cry, scream, and curse all at the same time. That asshole couldn’t control himself and… now what? Pregnant… I was pregnant. What am I going to do? I pressed a hand to my stomach.
“Ms. Evans?” The nurse asked. I snapped my phone shut, and hurried to the bathroom.  I hesitated at the door, my heart fluttering wildly. I could feel his hand clamp down on my shoulder again. A woman pushed past me. I clenched my fist and went in. I barricaded myself in a stall.
It was supposed to be over. They were supposed to tell me I was negative for everything. I couldn’t be pregnant. How could this happen? I asked myself. I felt my eyes get hot. I choked the tears down. No. I told myself. I couldn’t break down now. I couldn’t be pregnant. I couldn’t be. Hail Mary, full of grace… Blessed virgin, please let this be a false positive. That happened sometimes, right?
“Allison?” Maria’s voice wafted through the bathroom, echoing slightly. I prayed that my voice wouldn’t crack.
“Yeah?” I asked.
“Is everything ok?” She asked.
“Yeah, everything’s fine.” I lied. “I just… really had to go.”
“Was that-” I heard her moving around. After the noises stopped, she started again, softer this time. “Was that the doctor?”
“Uh, no. Telemarketer. They don’t take no for an answer.”
I pulled myself together, as best as I could, and joined my family outside. Mom and Dad had decided the best path to take to hit all the prime spots. Near the entrance area, there was a fountain spewing water into a small in-ground pool. A dozen children, or more, were splashing around in the pool, enjoying the beautiful weather.
How many of them are going to grow up and hurt others? I wondered. How many of them are going to grow up and get hurt? Beaten? Broken by somebody they weren’t aware existed? I looked over at the parents, standing in the shade of the nearby gazebo, taking pictures of their babies. How many of them wanted their kids at the point I’m at? How many want them now?
Maria jostled my shoulder, snapping me back to reality. She followed my gaze. She looked after Mom and Dad. After deciding that they were sufficiently far enough away, she turned back to me.
“It’s going to be fine.” She said. “Don’t worry. You’re probably not pregnant.”
“What makes you say that?” I asked.
“I don’t know.” She admitted. “I guess I’m just hoping.”
“Girls!” Mom called back. They were nearly a hundred feet down the path, already. “Hurry up, we’ve got a lot to see.”
“Just… try to enjoy the zoo.” Maria said. “Nothing you can do about it now, right?”
I nodded. Maria moved to grab my hand, but stopped herself.  We hurried after our parents. Mom and Dad wanted to get the creepy crawlies out of the way first, it seemed. They lead us to the insectarium and the reptile room first. Maria waited outside both sections. Despite my worries, I found myself grinning. I loved spiders and snakes and komodo dragons (though there were no komodo dragons here, I was sad to learn.)
“I still can’t understand how you can find those things cute.” Maria said, as Mom, Dad, and I exited the insectarium.
“I mean people find you cute, so…” I said.
“Hey, you look the same as I do.” She shot back.
“Really?” I asked, suppressing a smile. “Is that how this whole identical twin thing works? I’ve never been good at Bio.”
Maria giggled and stuck her tongue out at me. I rolled my eyes. After the insects, we made a bee line (no pun intended) for the Asia exhibit. I turned a corner and smacked into a woman.
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” I said. She rubbed her protruding belly. “Oh. I’m really sorry.”
“It’s fine.” She said, winking at me. “He’ll live.”
“How do you…?”
“I can tell. I don’t know how.” She said. “I just can.”
She flashed a smile, and headed off. She was so blithe about it. Sure, she was going to have a baby, but she was happy about it. I realized with a start that some people wanted babies. The concept seemed so foreign to me. I hugged myself, lost in thought.
“It’s a panda!” Maria squealed, seeing a panda. “Oh, my god, he’s so adorable.”
Future ruler of the world, ladies and gents. Maria, I’d learned in my 21 years of knowing her, was a strong independent young lady who had very few weaknesses. Cute things were number one. Any time she got within five feet of puppies, cats, squirrels, and babies she’d turn into a squealing, gibbering, mess of a girl.
Her eyes lit up as a smile broke across her face. For weeks now, she’d seemed so serious. Between stressing out about finals and worrying over me, her smile had been tainted with her troubles. She never seemed to let herself be happy any more. I’d started worrying about her. I’d never tell her that, though. She’d say I was being over dramatic. Still, seeing her in a moment of pure uncontained joy… It was refreshing.
When we were able to pull Maria away from the panda enclosure, we headed toward Primate Canyon. Everywhere I looked, little kids ran around, excited. Mothers pushed strollers through the walkways, every now and then bringing out the little ones to see an animal. I hugged myself. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Mom and Dad exchange a worried look.
Stop it, girl. I told myself. Stop ruining the day. I didn’t like people worrying about me on a normal day, but we came to the zoo to have fun. I didn’t want to kill the mood.
“So, Dad.” I started. “You know anything about gorillas?”
“A fair few things.” He replied.
“You know why they have such big nostrils right?” I asked. He shook his head, brow creased. “It’s cause they have big fingers.”
All three of them looked at me, bewildered. When it hit them, all the tension broke. Dad took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes, groaning. Mom leaned against the wall laughing at my Dad’s expression. Maria rolled her eyes, but couldn’t hide her smile. I started laughing at them all. It was like a valve busted inside me or something. I’d been so stressed for the past month. Now that I was laughing, I couldn’t stop.
I kept giggling sporadically as we went through the monkey zone. When we got to the gorillas, I started laughing hard again. Mom put her arm around my shoulder and pulled me close. My muscles tensed up, but I didn’t pull away this time. Don’t make them worry. Dad kept giving me amused looks. Maria grabbed my hand, intertwining our fingers.
Dad, not to be outdone in the horrible joke department, kept cracking puns all through the zoo.
“Never play poker with these cats, they’re all cheetahs.”
“Oh, my god.”
“…and so he said, with friends like these, who needs anemones?”
“Dad!” Maria groaned. I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe. “Stop encouraging him.”
“Why are Owls so lonely? They’re owl by themselves.”
“Mitch.” Mom chided, but she was grinning.
We finished the zoo around five o’clock and clambered into the car. We stopped for dinner at Outback Steakhouse. Maria and I took half the booth, the old people took the other half.  I sat sideways in the booth seat, my back pressed against the wall. I folded my leg under me. Dad excused himself to the bathroom not long after we’d gotten there. He returned a few minutes later with a couple of glasses of red wine. He passed one to me and the other to Maria.
“Well, you’re not technically of age, yet.” He said with a wink. “But don’t tell anyone, and I won’t.”
Maria sipped her wine and grimaced. “Oh god, that’s strong.”
Oh, please. I thought. Maria had always been a bit of a party girl. I highly doubted that this was her first time tasting red wine.
I grabbed my glass, but hesitated. I rubbed my belly. Isn’t alcohol bad when you’re pregnant? Mom and Dad were watching me. Maria looked over, and nudged me playfully.
“Come on. It’s not that bad.” She said. “I’m just a drama queen.”
I muttered something about needing air, pushed past Maria, and hurried out of the restaurant. Out on the patio, I leaned my back against the wall and slid to the ground. Why does my life suck? I thought. I pulled my knees to my chest. Maria came out a moment later.
“Hey,” She said. “You still worried about the pregnancy thing?”
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
“Look, you can have a glass of wine.” She said. “Besides, I doubt you’re pregnant. You got your period, right?”
I shook my head. Maria’s eyes went wide, but she kept her composure.
“Look, you can miss your period for a lot of things. It could be stress.”
“That’s what I told myself.” I said, my voice was barely a whisper.
“So, listen to yourself. You’re probably fine. When’s the doctor supposed to call?”
“He called already.”
“What?” Maria narrowed her eyes. “Is that the call? The one you got at the zoo?”
I nodded.
“And?”
I nodded again. Maria pursed her lips.
“You told me it was a telemarketer.” She said, her voice shaking. She squeezed her knee until her knuckles were white.
“Yeah.”
Maria got up and stormed inside. I felt a tear roll down my face. I wiped it away and forced the rest down. I couldn’t be weak. My family was waiting for me inside. Don’t ruin their day. I told myself. Don’t let them suspect anything. I sat there a few minutes. Finally, I got back on my feet and headed in to the table.
“Sorry about that.” I said. “Just got a little hot.”
Mom and Dad stared at me, all humor gone. Maria was nowhere to be seen. Shit. “Allison, is there something you want to tell us?” Mom asked.

Happy Release Day for The Flight Path Less Traveled by Leigh Dreyer
Tumblr media
I am tickled to be able to share a special post about this exciting second entry in the Pride of Flight series, a Pride & Prejudice modern continuation story. Blurb:
In this modern Pride and Prejudice continuation and sequel to The Best Laid Flight Plans, 2nd Lieutenant Elizabeth Bennet and Captain William Darcy are facing trials after the events of Elizabeth’s last flight. Darcy’s proposal lingers between them as Elizabeth becomes almost single sighted to her rehabilitation and her return to pilot training. A secret is revealed to Elizabeth about Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s past that throws all she has known to be true into a tail spin. The romance between our hero and heroine begins to blossom through military separations, sisterly pranks, and miscommunications. Can Darcy and Elizabeth come together or will flying in the Air Force keep them apart?
Tumblr media
Let me introduce author, Leigh Dreyer, and her books through a Q&A she is sharing with us.
1.                Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I work as a speech pathologist, currently in the Las Vegas area. I work both in person at a charter middle/high school and a long term acute care facility and doing teletherapy (which I absolutely love) from my home. Yes. I have three jobs plus writing because I apparently enjoy being crazy.  I write while my kids take naps, during teletherapy breaks, and at night. I have an incredible husband who is a pilot in the Air Force and two amazing kids. My son is four and my daughter is two. Both my husband and I are children of Air Force pilots which makes for fun family get togethers. Needless to say, I very rarely have to do a lot of plane-related research.
 2.                Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
Elizabeth Bennet has just gone through tremendous trauma at the end of The Best Laid Flight Plans and now she has to get back up, brush herself off, and push forward. In the original Pride and Prejudice Elizabeth faces a lot of invisible enemies (marriage or lack thereof, the entailment, etc.), but I wanted to see where she would take me when her enemies were very much physical. Would she be strong and fight?
3.                Which writers inspire you?
Jane Austen is the obvious answer, but I’m also inspired by so many JAFF authors. People like (in no particular order) Linda Wells, Joy King, Diana J Oaks, Maria Grace, Abigail Reynolds, Jenetta James, Karen Cox, Beau North, Jan Hahn, Elizabeth Ann West, Rose Fairbanks, etc. inspire me to fall more deeply in love with characters I already enjoy. I also love Diana Gabaldon, Neil Gaman, Aled Hossein, Tom Wolfe, William Makepeace Thackeray, Agatha Christie, and CS Forester.
 4.               What are you working on at the minute?
Book three, Came a Flight Gently and a short story about how Mr. and Mrs. Bennet meet and get married. I’m also working on outlining a time-travel story.
 5.                What’s it about?
Came a Flight Gently will start where The Flight Path Less Traveled ends and will continue the story in New York and feature the Reno Air Races (National Championship Air Races), the last of the great pylon races.
 6.                Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
When I answered this for The Best Laid Flight Plans, I said maybe David Gandy for Darcy and Katherine McNamara or Lily Collins for Elizabeth. Now, I’m kind of thinking brunette Chris Evans and Gal Gadot or a young Marissa Tomei. I picture a modern Elizabeth as a strong, independent female, but also fun and feisty and never cruel.
 7.                How much research do you do?
It really depends on the scenes I’m writing. My favorite research to do is everything to do with food. I have spent many the hour figuring out what to for a big event catered by Mrs. Bennet. I like to really think through what each character would be eating and making. Obviously, Mr. Collins likes potatoes and, if you read book 1, you know Darcy does not eat bacon, but what about everyone else? For flight scenes, I write a lot of them on my own then send them to my husband, father, and father in law to be checked for accuracy. Normally this results in a long page of notes from my father to make it sound authentic (apparently I am very bad at writing what the characters might say on the radio when speaking to tower).
 8.                What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?
After going through The Best Laid Flight Plans I changed the ending because I just wasn’t ready for it to end. I wanted to see what happened next and leave the door open to really learn more about Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, Colonel Fitzwilliam, etc. I needed another book or two or three for the story to end for me.
 9.                This book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?
The Flight Path Less Traveled is book two in a series of three planned books: The Best Laid Flight Plans, The Flight Path Less Traveled, and Came a Flight Gently. The first book is a P&P variation whose story line closely follows the events of P&P. The next two are original continuations although you will definitely see other favorite Austen characters and events as the story continues. Each book is an altered line from a poem that I find meaningful and that I feel speaks to the tone of book I wanted to write.
 10.             For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?
I prefer paper books, but I do the vast majority of my reading on kindle or on my phone because they are so easy to drag around with me. I work a lot and am frequently running around with my kids so carrying a paperback isn’t always practical. I do all my reading on my Kindle Paperwhite and have for about five years.
 11.             What book/s are you reading at present?
Right now I’m reading Rational Creatures edited by Christina Boyd on Kindle and listening to Ghengis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford, but ask me in a few days and I’ll be on to something else. I’ve averaged at least five books a month for the last six or seven years.
 12.             Do you proofread/edit all your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?
I was blessed to work with Christina Boyd of The Quill Ink. Let me tell you, she is amazing to work with and the book is so much better for having had a professional editor. My sister in law is also great about giving me really fantastic feedback as a beta and ARC reader. She is currently working as an editor for some online sources and is amazing.
 13.             Tell us about the cover/s and how it/they came about.
The photoshoot was done in Utah by Monica Cook, a military spouse, who runs Joyous Reflections Photography and Portraiture, at the Air Force museum at Hill Air Force Base. It was important to me to highlight Elizabeth as a female officer. Females are so rare in the pilot world that I wanted to be able to see Elizabeth as I see her, a strong woman who is willing to work harder than anyone else to achieve what she sees for herself. I made the choice to have the little ringlets and her hair up in a kind of braid Mohawk, because I thought it was a fun throwback to the Regency hairstyles. Of course, after the events at the end of The Best Laid Flight Plans, she is pictured out of a flight suit and in her blues, but I wanted to continue to present that strong image as she fights to recover.
 14.             Who designed your book cover/s?
My amazing friend Alishia Mattee. She is a military spouse and my next door neighbor when we were stationed together at Hickam Air Force Base and she is so talented.
 15.             What is your favorite movie and why?
Gone With The Wind. Partly because I am an eighty-five year old woman trapped in a thirty year old’s body (please see my love for all classic film, 1940s jazz and classical music, and other habits like insisting my family eat at the table) I love the costumes, the romance, the huge sets, the language. I love it all. Scarlett is one of my all-time favorite characters. She doesn’t let other people tell her she can’t achieve. She needs to take care of her family, so she does, in whatever way she can. I find her strong, capable head something I would love to emulate, even if she is a little stupid with her heart.
 16.             What advice would you give to your younger self?
Just do it. Jump in. You can figure it out while you’re doing it, but if you wait until you understand every nuance of a task, years will pass and it still won’t be done.
 17.             What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Write. Also, edit. I recently had a friend who decided her NaNoWriMo draft was ready for publication. She had not even re-read it. Yikes.  I tell every aspiring writer I know to write and then let someone read it and critique it. Critique can be hard to accept, but you’ll only get better.
 18.             Can we recognize your adopted hometown of Del Rio, Texas in The Flight Path Less Traveled?
Absolutely. Longbourn City is based on my hometown of Del Rio and Meryton Air Force Base is based on Laughlin Air Force Base which is about fifteen minutes out of town. My parents and siblings still live and work there. You see less of Longbourn in this novel, but the place that Aunt Gardiner takes Elizabeth to eat taquitos rancheros is Julio’s on Highway 90. Julio’s is famous for their chips and salsa. Love those things—seriously, they are amazing.
 19.             What’s the worst job you’ve had?
I worked at a restaurant (which will remain nameless because I signed an “I won’t whine on the internet” clause when I got hired) during grad school in Lubbock and I often refer to it as “the worst job ever.” It was on fourth street in Lubbock, Texas, although that location is now a Chick Fil-A. My manager was crazy and often switched from sickly sweet to horribly insulting. The food was meh at best. I worked there for three months and outlasted eleven employees. That should tell you something about the work environment.
 20.             Where do you get your ideas?
Well, book two is not just a general pilot training book anymore. You read the basics of Air Force life in The Best Laid Flight Plans, but now Elizabeth isn’t a naïve butter-bar Second Lieutenant anymore. She’s learned and grown. Many of her experiences in the novel are based on my friends and family who have had similar things happen to them and gone through the board process. I’m trying to avoid spoilers in these questions, but let’s just say, the events that occur to her are certainly not out of the ordinary. For Darcy, many of his experiences are based on my growing up with a T-38 instructor. Cross-countries were just part of the gig. My husband is in a staff-type job now, but when he was actively flying, he was gone more than he was home.
I do love interviews for all that I learn about the background for author and books.  Thanks so much for sharing with us today, Leigh!

2019 Goals
Am I supposed to be writing right now and instead procrastinating by penning a blog under the guise of “lubing up” my writing chops so I can be ready to write what I need to write today?
Little Mix voice: Hell Yeah I Am!
(Dances to Joan of Arc for three times.)
Anyway, here are my goals for this year and they’re way more than I thought they would be, so I categorized them:
Health Goals
1. Lose 10 inches from my waistline by the end of the year.
5 inches by June
5 inches by December
I went buckwild with the whole “goals need to be SMART - Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Bound” thing. I’m not remotely fucking around this year. I’ve deleted my Tinder and Grindr. Literally no Fucking Around. Also, got no time for men.
This is definitely something I’m gonna struggle with. I’m already not exercising and I’m losing days, but there is still the next day and the next day. Can’t be losing all those inches within a week. That would be unhealthy and I’m not about that. I’m not gonna lose weight just for the sole purpose of being pretty or so I can fit in my fucking clothes. I’m turning 25 this year. I don’t want to grow up regretting all the shitty food I’ve been eating and then paying for it in medical bills. No sir. I will not be a miserable old fuck who can’t walk around or climb stairs. I wanna be a miserable old fuck who CAN.
I can already feel my hypertension acting up again and I’d rather not freak my mom out about it. I need to lose weight, and that’s not just society talking.
2. Learn to cool 6 vegan meals (not snacks)
Again, I’m doing this thing where I need to be healthy. Also, I need to do this thing where I learn some actual domestic skills because growing up all comfortable with maids is not helpful anymore. I need to shape up and get some adult points. Can’t be level 5 adult forever.
This means I need to learn 1 meal per two months. It’s not that fucking hard @ self.
3. Clean room while listening to a new Night Vale episode.
The one sure way to know how deep I am in my depression is the state of my room. The state of my room also sends me into this self-destructive spiral of hate and lethargy. As it get dirtier, I get dirtier on the inside. Clutter begets clutter. Therefore, I will force myself to clean and declutter bi-monthly (eyyy 20biteen!!!)
This will not cure me of the Sads but at least a clean room is something less to stress about. Unfuck The Year!
Writing Goals
I’m dreading this already.
1. Finish HSHL (His Smile, His Laugh) by June 30th, 11:59PM
Wanna hear something funny? I was meant to finish writing my outline on December 31st. Right now, I’m procrastinating from finishing it. LMAO ROFL. FUck Me. But hey, I made it a goal to finish it within the week and I’m on what I like to call “Act V” of the outline so I just need to focus. I’m not doing that now but I sincerely hope that by finishing this blog I’ll be all “lubed up” for it.
2. Submit draft to AT LEAST 25 agents starting July 15th.
Gotta do that break yo. One teacher at my grad school residency talked to us about SMART goals and this was one of them. Submit the draft, sure. But aim for something. 25 agents is a good number. I’ll do more if I have to. We did a project on finding agents too so I can’t say I’m wholly unprepared.
3. Submit 3 stories to 10 journals/magazines
Listen. I don’t want to have to play the game but Capitalism Makes Moral Compromisers of Us All. That said, I started a  writing twitter where I will be “networking,” something I’ve been dreading since I started grad school. Nevertheless, it’s a necessary evil. We are social creatures. Until such time I have fuck you money, I’m gonna have to do this. But also, I do genuinely want to support other writers. We’re all humans and I wanna do this thing where I tell writers about how much I love their writing. It will make me feel good that they feel good. Also, that’s good karma.
But anyway, this is also a good way to stretch my writing muscles. Avoid burnout. Keep things going. Plus, it’s a good way of practicing how to be thrifty with words since most of these things require a Word Count Limit. As you know, and as you can see, I don’t know when to shut up.
4. Finish “Julian’s Body” by February 28, 11:59PM
Guess who’s still writing Dalton fanfiction in 2019. This person! I’m like a few chapters away to the end. Might as well get it out of the way so that I stop feeling bad about it.
5. Finish “Forgive My Weakness” by January 31, 11:59PM
Another fanfic to finish. The fanfic I’m procrastinating on Today. I’m almost kinda done. This shouldn’t take another week. I hope.
6. Read at least one book/full lit mag/journal per month.
Again, an easy in theory goal. I’m reading Three Dark Crowns right now and I’m loving it but I’m also not reading it so...fuck. However, this is something I should stick to because I just finished reading Autoboyography by Christina Lauren and it gave me all those nice writing feels. Reading fuels writing and it’s easy to forget.
Work Goals
I’m quitting my current job in April. It’s no longer the right fit for me. I don’t want to get into great detail about these but I just want what’s best for my account before I leave it.
1. Set up QA team by April 1st, 12:00PM
2. Set up monthly incentive program by April 1st, 12:00PM
3. Set up phone rep incentive by April 1st, 12:00PM
4. Do minimum 4 writing workshops at Spark
This city does not need a Creative Writing teacher so I need to make do with what I have. There’s this cafe that allows people to do drawing/calligraphy workshops. My friend said that I could do writing workshops as well so this is the plan for 2019. I won’t have a stable job, I fear. I hope I get something to push through but if all else fails, I’m gonna fight tooth and nail to get a teaching career going, even if it’s all super amateur.
Money Goals
1. Get new debit card from BPI by March 17th, 12:00PM
Since I’m quitting my job, I’m also going to be losing my debit card so I need to set a new one up before I do so. Then this means I have to change my Amazon, my PayPal, my Spotify, and my Patreon and that’s gonna be sooooo annoying.
2. Pay mom back for treadmill by end of year.
I still owe her a lot of money and if I want to be rid of my guilt, I will have to finish paying her.
That’s pretty much it. There are of course some resolutions I still have like talking to my friends more and helping my sister out with her current situation with our mom. (Not fun, super dumb, why she too christian for her own good.) But I didn’t put them in as goals because I haven’t figured out how to word them in such a way. Resolutions are tough to follow through because of the wording. Still, I want to improve my personal life but that’s going to be up to me. These are the most important goals I want to hit and I’m gonna get through them, sweat and tears and blood and all.
I’m afraid.
I’m unprepared.
I’m procrastinating.
But you know what? I’m capable.

if/then (2.0) - 6
More build up here -sorry this update took so long to post- I had to write ahead to grasp what was happening here. We're approaching some action but I'm still setting the scene, since these chapters are short I think (hope) when read all together it will flow forward more than it does with a chunk every month or so. Some nudity but not over the top. Could use more tweaking but I'm putting it up anyway. Lots ad lots of editing - 7/9
Previously: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5
Read first if you are new! gutted/sorted and wax/wane…if/then is a continuation of those two.
//////////////////////
As the bed shakes, Myka jerks awake, head lifting but shoulders refusing to move. Dark hair falls over her eyes as eager lips cover her own, coaxing her sleepy ones out of their slumber. As she grasps at slim hips, the hair flips back, dramatically revealing the person responsible.
“Hi,” Myka says, lips curling up into a moony smile.
“You're here,” Helena says, pressing their bodies together, dipping down for another kiss.
“Sorry about this morning,” Myka says as Helena pulls back.
“You’ve already apologized,” Helena says, rolling to the side, spreading her arms and legs across the king sized bed. “Quite the luxury, this. Christina will be ecstatic.”
Myka turns her whole body towards Helena and stares; after Helena’s distressed tone this morning, being let off the hook seems really wrong.
“My plane was late, and I had new notes for my meeting.”
“You’ve said,” Helena says, twisting at the neck face Myka.
"I should have texted, at least. You were worried.”
“I was,” Helena says, rolling on her side, cupping Myka’s cheek. “But it matters little, now that you're here."
Relieved Helena’s eyes show more love than resentment, Myka nuzzles her cheek into Helena’s hand and smiles at the warmth transferring between them.
“Have you eaten today?” Helena asks.
“They brought in sandwiches.”
“Did you have one?”
“I think?”
“Right.” Helena slides off the bed and steps towards the desk, then plucks a paper from a folder. “Room service,” she says, flashing a menu.
Myka smirks at the posh tone Helena adopts while reciting their options and snickers as a hand wafts in the air for emphasis. When the menu swings to the side, her attention catches on Helena's third button down, straining in its seat, poised to pop. A heat rises in her belly at the prospect of unintentionally revealed skin, her mind filling with risqué thoughts best left for later.
“You’ve not listened to a word I’ve said,” Helena says, staring expectantly at Myka as her monologue ends. She looks down at her shirt, then up at Myka and frowns.
“I have,” Myka replies, meeting Helena’s gaze but swiftly returning it to the button.
“Then tell me, what would you like?”
“I'd like what’s holding the menu.”
“Perhaps,” Helena says, then sets the menu on the desk. She works the errant button free, then pulls the fabric apart.
Myka props herself up on her elbows, eyes wide in anticipation.
“I’m not convinced you’ve chosen wisely,” Helena says, slipping the button back through its slot and securing it properly.
“Tease,” Myka huffs and flops back on the bed.
Helena hops on top and crawls across the duvet then sits, knees straddling Myka’s hips. “I’ll allow one chance to convince me."
Myka yanks Helena down by her collar and unbuttons that pesky button, then starts the kissing off in earnest all over again.
----------------
Myka lunges across the bed to stop a buzz from seeping between dream and reality. “Hello?” she says into the handset, more as a mumble than a greeting, then listens groggily to the reply. It’s a wake-up call from the front desk; unexpected, but welcome, especially once she asks the time. She thanks the caller and hangs up, then rolls back under the covers.
Did her alarm go off and she not hear it? Or did she turn it off then fall back asleep? The last thing she remembers is Helena kissing her on the forehead before she left.
Dewy usually wakes her at home, demanding breakfast like clockwork, so she's glad Helena requested the call on her way out. And thankfully, the emails she meant to tackle early weren't urgent; she’ll blame jet lag for her delayed replies.
She pulls Helena’s pillow close and breathes in her scent, eyes closing as thoughts drift back to the evening.
Things escalated quickly once Helena’s shirt was off; their bodies tangling together, desperate to remind each other what they’ve been missing. Once blissfully, and hastily, sated, she nearly nodded off, but Helena prodded her awake, insisting she shower. The moment she emerged, their dinner arrived, and she sat on the couch, swathed in an oversized robe, ravenous after her first bite.
Conversation flowed comfortably as they ate, the ease between them hard to replicate over the phone. Heated looks between then grew as the wine dwindled and Myka felt herself blushing at Helena’s flirty remarks.
Glasses emptied, Helena leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to Myka's lips, then all at once, the urgency from earlier flooded back. When Helena withdrew, Myka cupped her jaw and gazed into her dark, sparkling eyes, struggling to remember the last time they’d been alone like this.
Myka initiated the next kiss, but Helena took the reins, exploring Myka's lips with an eagerness reminiscent of their early days. As the kiss lingered, anticipation filled her chest, as if their previous encounter was only a warm up for more.
“Let’s get you back to bed,” Helena said, leaning her forehead against Myka’s, slipping a finger under the lapel of her robe.
She rose and held out a hand, then guided Myka towards the bed, stopping just shy of its threshold. She then carefully pushed Myka's robe off her shoulders, letting her eyes follow as it cascaded to the floor, then trailed them up, caressing Myka’s newly naked form.
Myka smiled as Helena’s gaze met hers, and they stood, staring into each other's eyes until Myka shivered from the cool air. Helena immediately lifted the covers and waved her underneath, then fussed with the duvet, tucking her in.
Helena undressed slowly but surely, looking up now and then to meet Myka’s attentive eyes, then slid under the covers and cuddled up close. She wrapped an arm around Myka's middle and laid her head on her chest while Myka curled an arm around her back and laid her hand over her hip.
Helena's breathing evened out, and as her muscles slackened, Myka's lids drooped then closed. She kissed the crown of Helena’s head and laid her cheek there, feeling at peace for the first time in a long while.
---------------
Bent over her computer, clicking on keys, Myka mulls over syntax, deleting and retyping phrases repeatedly. She jumps when Helena bursts into the room, eyes following as she chucks her bag onto the bed then circles around and kisses her before disappearing into the bathroom.
At the metallic swish of the shower curtain, she turns back to her screen, panicking as she eyes the clock. Their reservations are in less than an hour, and she still needs to get ready, there’s no way she’d going to get this done in time.
She only has herself to blame, thinking it would be easy to pull together, ignoring her gut telling her to chip away at it over time. But her research for Mrs. Frederic's been most important, as she was told a meeting could happen at any time, then there were files from Sally to pour over, to prepare for tomorrow….
“Still working?” Helena says as she slips behind Myka’s chair.
“That was quick,” Myka replies, looking over her shoulder at Helena toweling off her hair. “It's not work work. It’s a thing for me.”
“I see,” Helena says, tilting her head as she blots the ends of her locks. She tosses the towel towards the bathroom and leans toward the screen, laying her hands on Myka’s shoulders.
Myka’s gaze hangs on the towel wrapped around Helena's midriff, watching it strain to stay fastened as she moves. The instant she realizes Helena’s reading her document, she turns back her laptop and folds it closed.
“I should get ready,” she says and moves to stand, but Helena holds her in place.
“Show me,” Helena says, nodding at the laptop.
Myka breathes in, deeply, then exhales slowly as she opens her laptop. “I was nominated for this thing,“ she starts, "this residency, in LA. I’m pretty sure through Amanda.” She clicks some keys and pulls up a website. “It's kind of a big deal, but you have to send support materials to be considered.”
“How far have you gotten?”
“Not very,” Myka laments. “I have a rough outline of my 'interest in the program’ and my grad school artist statement, but I need to update my resume, upload images and make an image list.”
“Busywork,” Helena huffs.
“And,” Myka adds, scrolling down the page, “it’s due tonight, at midnight, west coast time.”
Helena squeezes Myka’s shoulders and examines the criteria.
“I'm not sure why I’m bothering. If I got it, I couldn’t go. It’d be a month away from work and Christina—"
“We’d figure it out. Show me this statement.”
Myka brings up her document, then looks at Helena, her eyes lingering on the swell of her breasts as her towel sags.
A few moments later, Helena abruptly swipes the machine off the desk and walks across the room, eyes glued to the screen. Her towel flutters to the floor as she hops on the bed then slides the computer towards the pillows. She stretches out, propping her head up on an arm, brow wrinkling as she continues to read.
"This is no longer relevant to the work you’re making at present,” Helena says, with a seriousness incongruent to her state of dress.
“You're not understanding the context."
“I understand it intimately," Helena says, fixing Myka with a firm eye. “This 'towing the line between index and archive' still applies, but the rest is entirely too vague.”
“Vague?” Myka questions, scowling as Helena’s attention returns to the screen.
“For example: ‘the textural particularities representative of the everyday,' 'a permanence within the ephemeral.’ Dry. Shapeless. Indistinct,” Helena says, shaking her head.
Myka’s scowl deepens, and she folds her arms over her chest. “I spent months writing that.”
“Over a year ago. I’d wager your oeuvre has digressed.”
“Not materially.”
“But conceptually."
Myka glares at Helena's cocky eyebrow lift, though she knows Helena is right. “Fine. What would you write?”
“I'd mention your new found relationship to loss and nostalgia and the urgency to take stock of your history,” Helena says as if she’d been waiting all night for the question. She turns away from the computer and leans back on her elbows, counting on her fingers as she continues. “There’s the journey you were thrust into because of extreme circumstance, the hardships you’ve overcome in the months since the fire, the growth you've gained through the experience—"
“Too personal."
“It’s what the work's about, is it not?”
Myka squares her shoulders and narrows her eyes; Helena's assessment hits too close to the bone.
“This is no different from Claudia and I’s project proposals at school. You must be direct to win the attention of the reviewers. Pussyfooting around will not impress."
“Pussyfooting?” Myka spits out, her arms dropping to her sides. “Pussyfooting,” she repeats, louder, eyes dropping to Helena's chest to avoid her increasingly smug grin. “I-I can't take you seriously when you’re…” She waves a hand at Helena’s reclining pose.
Helena glances down at herself, then up at Myka and smirks. "That's highly unfortunate, as I've lost the desire to dress.”
"What about dinner?"
“We’ll reschedule.”
“You said it was hard to get reservations."
“They’ll come round again,” Helena says, eyes flicking back to the screen. “Shower, while I work on this.” She turns toward the computer and waves a hand at the other side of the room.
Myka looks toward the bathroom then back at Helena and decides her curves are more seductive than any other task at hand.
“Since we’re not going out, we could...” Myka starts, mouth lifting into a sly smile as Helena looks up, "you know…now…"
“You’ll never finish if we start.”
"Maybe I don't care anymore," Myka says, stepping towards the bed then climbing on top.
“I’ll care for the both of us, then,” Helena says, scooting back against the headboard, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Your ‘determined’ face isn’t working,” Myka taunts. She crawls on top of Helena and plants her hands next to her hips, then lifts her chin up to look Helena in the eye.
"Go, or you get nothing,” Helena says, throwing her nose into the air.
Myka cranes up, pressing her lips to the underside of Helena’s chin. “You couldn't resist if you tried.”
"That's the problem.”
Myka suddenly topples over, blindsided by a pillow smacking her shoulder, and rolls onto her back. “Later,” she says, then slides off the bed. “That’s a promise.”
"I’ll be clothed when you emerge,” Helena warns, but Myka's grin widens, preoccupied with thoughts of "later," as she walks away.

What are some ways fatphobia can manifest in academia? And if there are any instances or spaces where it does happen, what can we do to help prevent it? Sincerely, a fat PhD candidate
It manifests in a lot of the ways it would in a job, I think.

Plus, even as a small fat back in undergrad, I found those ridiculous desk chair combos very tight and uncomfortable.  We didn’t have them in the engineering building, but I often had to put up with them for my other classes.  That was 15 years ago now, though, so maybe that has changed.

Hi! Sorry if you've already answered something like this. Okay so I'm a senior in high school and I love marine bio but am kinda scared to major in it. What exactly can someone do with a degree in Marine Bio?
Great question! The answer is all KINDS of things. Basically whatever you major in does NOT have to affect what you do in life. If you’re interested in it now but then graduate and realize you want to change careers or can’t find a job, DO NOT WORRY, your life is not ruined. One other thing that I thought when i was your age was that if I wanted to be a scientist that it was harder to be a marine biologist than a cancer biologist and let me tell ya right now- that is NOT true. Academia exists for all things, and marine science is super important economically and environmentally.
Just to give you a brief cross-section of my graduating class, here’s what we’re all up to:
Academia
Me - grad student at UConn working on squid in a molecular and cell biology program
Pam - grad student at the Virginia Institute of Marine science working on wetland ecology, hydrology, marine science
Conor -worked as a fisheries scientist for a bit and now is a grad student at URI
Dave - PhD Student, Rutgers University Dept. Environmental Science
Outside academia
Jenna- Dive Safety Officer at the Oregon Coast Aquarium
Steph - Life Scientist at United States Environmental Protection Agency
Tyler - worked for an aquaculture farm for a while and is now working at the Monterey Bay Aquarium as an aquaculture scientist
Sarah - working in marine science education but outside academia
Ross- aquarist
Molly- Research Coordinator at Canadian Organization for Tropical Education and Rainforest Conservation
Arjun - Fisheries Analyst at OAI, Inc.
Katrina - John A. Knauss Fellow, NOAA Office of Law Enforcement
Julie - Animal Trainer/ Presenter at Joel Slaven's Professional Animals
Connie - Assistant Consultant at ERM: Environmental Resources Management
Christina - Marine Scientist at Dial Cordy and Associates Inc.
Outside marine science completely
Nels- getting an MBA
Pat- went to med school
Barcley- Medical Research Technician
Sam- crossfit instructor
Alex - Astrobiology; University of Rhode Island geoscience M.S. candidate
Emily - Veterinary Student at Washington State University
Jules Brouwer- works with medicine or public health in some way

This is where I finished my research and writing for grad school. From here forward, it’s almost all new YA, with some essayists and nonfiction sprinkled in.
I know that I read more comics than this, but I guess I didn’t write them down.
This is the British edition that I bought from a second-hand shop in London, so I’m claiming that I’d never read it even though it’s not so different.
I also did the Book Riot Read Harder challenge, and I did OK. Missed four, or possibly three because I feel weird Googling the sexual preference of authors.

Opinion: The Case Against Pressuring Women to Have Children
By Christina Maldonado (Gallup, NM)
Living as a sixteen-year old in the United States, I have noticed that the current generation of women are less likely to have children. This isn’t just my own observation; it’s a real trend: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that women 30 and older increased their birth rates during the years 1990-2009, while birth rates for women younger than 30 decreased. Meanwhile, according to the Pew Research Center and the National Center for Health Statistics, one measure of fertility reached an all-time low in the United States in 2016.
I find some comfort in knowing that I am not the only young adult who is taking this controversial topic into consideration for the future, because women are not obligated to the title of motherhood.
This generation of women -- unlike the women living before the nineteenth century -- have the ability to raise their voice when it comes to deciding what their future looks like. Women in past generations were expected to be nurturing and comforting. They were of interest if they were capable of having children and providing household capabilities to their husband. In today’s society, this generation of women see themselves with more opportunities, so some of them have decided that they do not want to have children -- and their choice should not be seen as outrageous.
Women, especially young women, should not see themselves as less of a woman if they decide they do not want to start a family early or if they do not want to start a family at all. Society will tell women that they have a “special gift,” which is the process of birthing a child -- a human being -- but that is not the only thing women have to offer.
Morning Consult did a survey for The New York Times, which demonstrated a variety of different reasons why young adults in the United States are having fewer children. Thirteen percent of young adults say their reasoning reflects their own personal view of whether they’d be a good parent. Twenty-three percent of young adults said that they’re prioritizing their education and career. Forty-two percent of young adults say they want more leisure time, 43 percent say they’re waiting for financial stability and 45 percent are worried about the economy. The highest percentage of women -- 62 percent -- say that having children is too expensive.
There are different factors to take into consideration when it comes to women -- and families -- deciding if they want to start a family. A woman close to my age, Jessica Boer, 23, told The New York Times, “My parents got married right out of high school and had me and they were miserable. Now we know we have a choice.”
Children require a safe home, healthy food and attention. Having a child will mean supporting another human being, which requires money that many young women do not have. Brittany Butler, 22, is a first generation grad student, and in the fall she will graduate with a degree in social work. A big priority for parenthood is a safe community, so Butler said that it would take her about 10 years to consider having children, because by then, the poor circumstances in her neighborhood should be fixed. Butler told The New York Times that the idea of having children later in her life makes her “a little nervous,” because it would be tougher to have a pregnancy, but her priority is to pay off her student loans and to live in a safe neighborhood. Young adults are cautious about the reality of how they are going to survive in the world. They cannot survive without money, which bring groceries, homes and vehicles.
Freezing eggs allows women to have a safety net in case they change their mind about motherhood. According to Business Insider, large tech companies -- such as Google, Apple and Facebook -- offer their female employees oocyte cryopreservation; this benefits young women who may not want to give birth in their twenties, but who decide to have children in their thirties. (Of course, freezing eggs is quite expensive -- it can cost $12,000 -- and it does not always result in having children.)
Whether delaying motherhood until their thirties or simply choosing not to have children, young women should not face pressure from society to be mothers. There are a variety of things women can achieve in this society and motherhood is only one of them. Young women have the ability to advance their education, to travel and to thrive in a career they’re passionate about. Women should not be discouraged for the choices they make. Instead, they should be able to craft their own futures.
