The World Says

The world says, ‘Be yourself, Follow your dreams,’ But if I don’t make those dreams reality I’m a failure

The world’s narrative is telling me That my identity can be found in What I do and by what I achieve

The world says, ‘Be yourself, Listen to your desires,’ But how can I listen to my desires When they conflict and contradict?

What about my desires That wish to hurt others Including myself? We all have a streak of self-destruction Within ourselves

The world says, ‘Be yourself, Do what feels right to you,’ But what makes anyone think It is right to listen to their own Flawed moral compass?

How many times I’ve hurt others And myself For doing what I thought was ‘right’, What makes us think we can trust ourselves?

The world says, ‘Be yourself, Don’t listen to anyone else,’ But how can I ignore the wisdom Of others who may know better?

How many times I have done things my way, But would have benefitted if I listened to other people, Not relying on just myself; Don’t you realise, that we need one another?

The world says, ‘Be yourself,’ Saying we can define ourselves, But expects us to prove ourselves, Expects us to achieve, Expects us to be self-reliant; Yet we become ego-centric, Believing that we know best, Ultimately glorifying ourselves

Hereby I say: I refuse to follow the world’s pre-made path to the self-discovery Of my identity - Identity based on these things Is not liberating; It is limiting

The world tells me to find myself, Define myself, But I won’t and I can’t

God says, ‘I love you, You are my beloved child’ - That is my identity; An identity received,  Not for anything I have done Or achieved

My once self-given identity Based on my success, Caused me to risk losing myself, Caused me to let failure Define me

How much more precious To be given an identity by my God, To be glorified by the One who loves me More than anyone else ever could? How much more precious Than me defining myself, Than me glorifying myself? My past identity Had a shaky foundation, Was built on sand, Rooted in something unstable, Fluctuating I had self-worth And confidence, Until I failed

The only stable identity, Is the one I found in Jesus Christ; My self-worth cannot be shaken, Because my identity has been rooted In Him

Even when I’m a failure, An outcast, In the eyes of the world, I remember that In the eyes of God I’m a success

The light shines in the darkness

The light shines in the darkness

I open the doors and the brisk night’s air comes pouring in. They tell me I’ll get a cold or pneumonia but i don’t listen. I step outside, and barefoot, on my tippy toes, i lean against the fence.

The light shines in the darkness

It’s all clear to me. I was born to gaze at the stars. I feel like i belong in this world, a world that’s quiet, a world that’s sleeping, with the lights out at the neighbour’s house, only the purple- red shines from the tv screen. The world feels small right now- the world’s the garden that i’m standing in. I feel so big in it- I’m the young and  body about to soar upwards to the skies. Oh, stars, i glare at you like you’ve got all the answers.

The light shines in the darkness.

But i don’t always want to. The train dashes past the sunflower fields, the cottages, the mountains peeking at me from behind each other’s shoulders. The girls across from me are cackling, high pitched voices, lamentations about nothing. John is silent, he sits in his seat and stares at the scenery. He doesn’t want to talk to me right now. Where are we even going? Let’s reverse, a complete darkness’s better than a lonely dimness.

I blow on the candle and the little flame yields. It’s gone. I’m standing in the midst of a strange black room. There’s no light anymore, I can’t even see my own hands. “So what you gonna do?” He asks. I hum somberly into the night. “I don’t know,” I say. My feet are cold, my hands are cold, the curtains move in the midnight air. I look up.

“I don’t know. I guess I’ll have to be the light.” i reply

A Higher Power

It doesn’t matter who wins or loses; when it comes to love, everyone has bruises. I wish that I could shine a light into this darkness, and I can’t see because I’m blind. I am looking for a higher power from above to show me the meaning of love. I don’t know where to start or being; all I know is I am needing your might to help me love again.
