This may be unkind to say, but I really do support depictions of Christianity where it’s God and the hierarchies it imposes are portrayed as a mostly unequivocal villain
Not even in a Gnostic way. But as a criticism of the inherent Imperialism and Fear baked into its theology of control. Perhaps there are some sects in other parts of the world that lack that inherent imperialistic impetus, but if it’s a sect that does Missionary Work, funds large organizations like the Catholic or Mormon churches, or participates in avid lobbying against issues pertaining to the rights of marginalized groups I don’t think it’s something that can really be saved
The very structure of the religion with its focus on Binaries , ultimate good and distance from that good, the very concept of sin itself. I do enjoy seeing it villainized particularly.
I’m pro-theism in broad strokes, but still feel that large institutions can and should be criticized. Most major sects of Christianity , in the USA at least, function as legal institutions with vast amounts of wealth and political power, and I feel this is baked into the Theology itself because of its Imperialist roots with Constantine, etc etc
I think it’s fair to Villainize institutions and their accompanying theology and ideology when it reaches a scale of harm seen in USA Christianity

There is no afterlife in Christianity that isn't a punishment to me. Knowing someone who means the world to me is being punished while I'm in heaven and unable to do anything about their suffering would in itself be a punishment.
I can only see two ways around this: 1, one's memories of people in hell are removed or suppressed, or 2, one's ability to care about the suffering of others is altered so that one no longer cares about it. Neither of these seems particularly moral.
"You'll have so many wonderful things to do and see instead of thinking about the bad things!" This is an example of option number 1.
"It was their choice not to believe." -> ok but in this hypothetical situation, I didn't make their choice and I'm still suffering because they're suffering. -> "God will help you understand it was their choice and he will remove your suffering." See option number 2.
There's a third option, and that is that people just do not care about the suffering of others to begin with, sidestepping this dilemma entirely. I can't help thinking there's so much suffering that occurs in this world that could be addressed, except a fair number of people look the other way while telling themselves those people deserve it. They plan on continuing this behavior in heaven.

The amount of family drama I have fucking dealt with over this past....week and a half, that came to a head this weekend. Y’all have no idea (and yeah hey hi, I dropped off the face of the earth, this is why lmfao. My parents suck 👍👍)
Anyway I think if BOTH of your kids sit you down and spend OVER 4 HOURS very gently trying to tell you that you need to see a fucking doctor and get help because you’re hurting other people AND yourself and we’re tired of pretending you aren’t anymore. And your only response to that is to fucking Bible-bash them. And straight up SAY “I know “bible-bashing” is a thing but-” as if we’re MAKING IT UP or it’s NOT REAL. Before proceeding to do FOUR HOURS of Bible-bashing without listening to a single motherfucking thing we have to say.
Then you know what fine. Fuck you. Go “pray” about it or whatever, I don’t fucking care anymore. I’m done. We’re both done with you guys. We don’t care no more.

I’ve said this before, but I always found stories that frame heaven as “evil” and hell as “good” (or less bad) to be genuinely boring. I like more nuanced approaches to each realm.
I understand that for a lot of people, Christianity is a religion they like to criticize and mock, but I feel like if you don’t even understand the fundamentals of the religion, why even attempt to critique it?

I also heavily resent the ever-present implication in mainstream media that at all touches on trauma that we cannot have any sympathy for Bad Victims. That it's evil to write a sympathetic Bad Victim. Hell, that it's bad to portray one at all at times. Writing a victim of trauma who's an addict or self-destructive is already an edge case-- writing trauma survivors who end up actually hurting someone else, being chronically "treatment"-resistant or having inconvenient ptsd, perpetuate the cycle, or are just kind of a total dick is considered an evil move. Instead of like. An actually complex and interesting artistic choice.
Idk. It pisses me off a lot how often Bad Victims[TM] are brushed under the rug and if you dare to speak of them/make art of them, let alone SYMPATHIZE with them you're an irredeemable monster. And that's just fictional characters. Don't even get me started on the way people treat actual people who have ptsd in a way that's at all inconvenient and problematic in their opinion.

Seeing the outspoken atheist anger about being called culturally Christian while most of the ex-Christian atheists I know (online and offline) haven’t unpacked the ways in which Christianity and being part of the hegemonic religion shaped their worldview is so funny to me.
You replaced the word devil with the word church. Congrats! That’s a good first step, but you can’t just end there.
Now it’s time to unpack why you’re deciding that minority religions are the same as Christianity. Now it’s time to unpack why you believe that thinking something is a crime, even if it’s not acted upon. Now it’s time to unpack why you think that everyone needs to believe the same thing as you. Now it’s time to unpack why you think that religion is even a useful classification. Now it’s time to unpack why you believe in punitive justice. Now it’s time to unpack why you think that argument is always antagonistic. Now it’s time to unpack why you think that humanity is irredeemable.
Christianity shapes so many aspects of my worldview as an observant Jew because it’s the water in which I swim. The Christian secular may seem like the default when you’re coming at it from observant Christianity, but it’s not neutral. None of its assumptions are neutral. And if you’re actually committed to claiming you’re no longer Christian, you need to do that work. Because otherwise you’re just a Christian with atheist dressing.

“[…]A lot of it speaks of patterns of arcana across cultures, across time, across dates and you can see Exandrian calendar fragments. You can see notes on repetition and the shiftings of magic. You can see fonts of arcana and power that overlap with celestial events. There's a lot of noting where things continue to recur over long and short periods of time. […] With that, as you're doing this, you glance around and you can see there are other parts of this chamber where more of these notes are still somewhat present, haven't been taken entirely. So you begin to cut some of this away. You notice that in elements of these notes, it calls out historical specialists, people to reach out to in the world that might know this.”-Matt

i'll be real, i always hated it whenever media tries to "critique" Christianity while portraying all Christians as bigoted, misogynistic and irredeemable. its why it matters a lot to me that my own angels have some nuances to them.
Sera is very puritanical and obsessed with showing her devotion to God, but she's still a caring and well-meaning angel.
