COUCH TOUR: ETHAN IVERSON with Ben Street and Eric McPherson, MEZZROW’S, 28 AUGUST 2023, 7:30 pm set
I wouldn’t miss a top notch pianist with such a strong rhythm section anyway, but ETHAN IVERSON is more than just a top notch player. I know him as much as a writer/critic/educator from his Transitional Technology/Do the M@th blogs to the point that I don’t know what to think about his playing.
I was late to The Bad Plus party and so think of them as Reid Anderson and Dave King who did their old (with Iverson tunes) with Orrin Evans and the disappointing Chris Speed/Ben Monder quartet. The sound is distinctive and I can’t tell what is Iverson vs. Anderson/King in that amalgam. But he doesn’t play or, perhaps more importantly, write in that vein. He plays standards, he writes smart, opinionated criticism. I take him seriously as a writer even when there’s something that pulls me up short. He may tend to the cranky young man vein, but I don’t have the chops to argue against him. I may not be sure what “the real bebop” is (something Keith Jarrett eschewed along with McCoy Tyner), but who could be against that? Not me.
So his playing is intelligent, but what part is musical and what part is critical.
This set list was well curated and wide ranging with a carry through logic:
—Oscar Pettiford’s Blues in the Closet—a playground for Ben Street’s massive bass tone, there’s a relaxed groove thanks to Eric McPherson’s precise cymbal work. Pettiford is a foundational be bopper, checking that box.
—Bud Powell’s Hallucinations—oh, is that the name of that one? Not too much of a finger twister. More bebop, presumably quite real, and tipping the hat to a key piano hero.
—Everything Happens to Me—a great great Great American Song Book tune, not quite as dirge like as I hear it, but wonderfully somber.
—Stompin’ At The Savoy—more of a swing era tune, but it sure does swing but everyone gets to explore
—All The Things You Are which Iverson abstracts and, after Street plays a big solo, he closes out majestically. He reports that Kern regretted what the “jazz cats” did to his song, so he just does more of the same.
—“A piece of sound track music,” Johnny Mandel’s Shadow of Your Smile. A fine later GASB tune, but yeah “sound track music.” Still it’s taken seriously and not at all kitschy. They all make lots more of it than one might think.
—I’m Getting Sentimental Over You which Iverson associates with the Monk tradition. He hints in that direction but does his own thing with it.
—the quicker closer, Monk’s 52nd Street, written for Bud Powell, so making that point again.
And that concluded our lecture/demonstration of something—bebop (Pettiford, Powell, Monk) and its roots, Stompin’ at the Savoy. But there’s that nicely off kilter All The Things You Are and Shadow of Your Smile taken seriously.
But maybe it was just a jazz gig, with Street sounding very rich and organic as sometimes bassists don’t on the Mezzrow’s streams and McPherson both shimmering and propulsiave. The piano player delivered too and I might be projecting my analytic brain on him. Of course, I would relish having just a fraction of his musicality, but that’s not how I connect with him. It’s through the writing and those ideas. I know that magic, but somehow it discounts the music magic.
Too bad for me. He’s a fine fine player who demonstrates “the real bebop.”

During my recent re-watch of the Fantastic Fours, I realized even more why Rise of the Silver Surfer is one of the best sequels ever made. It succeeds where too many followups fail. It stays true to the protagonists while also further developing them, raises the stakes, ventures into new territory, avoids rehashing, and balances the drama-action-levity masterfully.

Some of the interesting aspects:
-The movie opens with bizarre disasters going on across the globe. Right away, the audience is informed that there is a mysterious and much bigger threat this time around.
-Re-introducing the Fantastic Four being the Fantastic Four. They're full-blown celebrities now, Reed and Sue keep having their weddings derailed, Ben is comfortable in his rocky skin, and Johnny is more hilarious than ever.
-Reed is as eager to get married as Sue, but he can't help his fixation with trying to save the world via science. Still, it's evident that if he had to choose, he would pick superhero retirement to have a family with Sue.
-All criticism for Sue prioritizing her wedding is absurd. She's concerned about Johnny's power glitch and understands how important it is that they cooperate with the military. Her role as Team Heart gets expanded. Her empathy convinces the Silver Surfer to be their allie. It is devastating when she tries to protect him, but the alien technology penetrates her force field. She's deeply pierced in the chest. It is so gut-wrenching to watch the Team Heart bleeding to death from her own.
-Chris Evans incredible emotional range as Johnny. He's still the kid of the team with innocence and vulnerability behind his showboating persona, but there's clearly more to him. After being the one most in love with his powers, he's now seriously struggling in that area. He's also going through growing pains and trying to figure out what he wants out of life besides media attention.
-Ben went through so much sorrow in the first film and he's completely earned the happiness and peace of mind he has now. He's more outgoing and adored by children. He's willing to go down fighting, but admits he'd rather go out holding Alicia. He is the Team Muscle and strong support pillar for the others.
-The Four have individual arcs and interpersonal relationships, but they're obviously a unified team. Whatever disagreements between them, there's no doubt what an inseparable force they are.
-It's so amazing how well the sub-plots mesh together. Johnny's power issues, Sue and Reed's wedding woes, and the Silver Surfer arriving on Earth are necessary for the end and wrapped up nicely.
-The pacing was great, never too rushed or dragged out. There are plenty of human moments instead of hurrying to get to the next action sequence.
-Victor Von Doom returning without crowding the film or being Magneto levels repetitive. He's supposed to be hostile towards the Four, but Julian McMahon's chemistry with the rest of the cast comes off as if he's comfortable with their temporary truce. Victor and Reed working together looked so natural and he even appeared quietly proud when Reed asserted himself authoritatively towards the general. It's easy to interpret their inevitable fallout as a 'what could have been' scenario.
-The Four having actual friends besides their fans. Alicia is much closer to the other three now, especially Sue. Her relationship with Ben gets more screentime as well. After getting acquainted with the team for less than a day, the Silver Surfer is more loyal to them than any alleged friendship in the X-movies.
-Messages like true heroism requires a lot more than flashy powers. Also, how arguments in a family doesn't necessarily make any one member absolutely wrong or right. No view is dismissed as invalid. Compare that mature approach to the mcu's marketing of Team Tony vs. Team Steve.
-An ending that would make even the hardest heart jump for joy.
I am so grateful for the Definitive Fantastic Four films, especially with what's happening in current day. It's a shame that if any future comic book movies stay true to their source material while also being entertaining, it likely won't be in my lifetime.
A sad situation I might have to remedy.....

Have I Got Views For You
Alongside three Peston Geek of the Week badges we can now add an appearance on Have I Got News For You for IfG charts. Ian Hislop seemed surprised by the appearance of  'A graph on a comedy show' - he should check out the open (data) mic night vibe of a Whitehall Monitor launch or a Data Bites event...
The most up-to-date version of that chart, and our other resignation charts, is here - and thanks too to BBC News for including a number of our charts in their summary of Theresa May's premiership, the beginning of the end of which began as this newsletter went out last week.
The end of May is likely by the end of July, once the Tory party leadership contest is complete. Having overtaken Gordon Brown this week in terms of time served, May will boot the Duke of Wellington out of the way shortly, followed by Neville Chamberlain, before falling short of Jim Callaghan.
Her resignation speech highlighted two data-based initiatives as successes: the race disparity audit (which we welcomed at the time, and which the women and equalities select committee applauded while demanding better data) and the publication of gender pay gap data. There have been a few other open/data initiatives of note, such as the Home Office crime map, which Paul reminded me of during this event. But May's premiership - if it is remembered for anything other than Brexit - will be remembered as an object lesson in opacity and secrecy, hindered by her closed style of governing and decision-making, on everything from Brexit to the disastrous dementia tax announcement. Ben Worthy's 2017 piece and 2018 piece on these issues are still well worth reading. It should prompt politicians to consider a more open style of leadership in the 21st century, as an opportunity as well as an obligation. But it probably won't.
Political support for the open government agenda has undoubtedly weakened, to a concerning degree. The UK finally published its Open Government Partnership National Action Plan this week, many, many months late. (Full disclosure: I'm a member of the Open Government Network steering group in the UK.) Thanks are due to the civil servants who got it over the line. But Tim's take on the 'lamentable' state of open government and his disappointment with the Plan is required reading (see also Mor's pre-publication pessimism). We can rightly blame the political situation and political disinterest for a lot of the problems; we *can* find positives in the plan (the contracting commitments are in line with our recommendations, amongst others). But there is a need for some civil society soul-searching. What are we trying to achieve from and through open government? Are we trying to bring together too many disparate areas, interests and groups under one heading? Are we after big, headline-grabbing initiatives or smaller, more practical business-as-usual steps (and did we get either)? Where do we go next?
This is a more optimistic development. Though the less said about Justin Trudeau's session at the Open Government Summit in Ottawa, the better, by the sound of it...
This side of the Atlantic, we've had the European elections to contend with. Putting the politics to one side (*knowing look to camera*) it's a great opportunity to compare how different outlets treat the same data - see the many, many links below. The fact the elections were somewhat unexpected in the UK may have been a blessing - rather than money wasted on thoughtless 3D graphics we got simple, succinct storytelling. (Though I do wonder whether we could think even more deeply, and, well...) There may be some more to come from us on this, too - keep an eye on our explainer, Aron and Lee.
I've rambled on far too long. In part, that's compensation for what will be a very short W:GC next week, if it appears at all: after hosting our third Data Bites on Tuesday night (come! or livestream! and put Wednesday 3 July in your diary for the next one!), I'm heading to Berlin for a conference and then preparing for the Orwell Foundation's Barbican residency.
And if you've not had enough of me, you can keep track of the IfG's future technology in government project here, and you might even hear me if you tune into Radio 5 Live this morning...
Gavin

Wonder Woman (2017) Review
I know my duty, I stand ready to fight any and all to protect Earth and mankind. I train harder than any other; I am steadfast in my faith and skill and I am unable to be swayed, even by my own mother.
Is Diana full of over-stuffed flamboyant language which amounts to the same amount of truthful meaning as one of Donald Trump's campaign promises? Or is her honour and good intention beyond reproach? I give my thoughts below…
Tumblr media
Diana, fittingly named, is fierce, innocent, honourable, beautiful & one of the biggest, bad-ass warriors whom evokes a sense of palpable tension as you await the outcome of her unlikely success against overwhelming odds. I say she is fittingly named because the name Diana means luminous and/or perfect. She dos shine as a beacon of hope that the superhero genre as a whole can be saved because this movie is great! I sum it up in one word: charming.
That is not a slight against the movie in fact it is the highest compliment I've given a movie in a long time. When I say its charming, I literally mean I left feeling charmed by the movie. The score I've given, probably makes you wonder then why I give such high praise, but not the highest score. Well I'll come on to its shortcomings further in the review; its direction is, in my opinion, without fault. Patty Jenkins does this movie, and indeed the genre as a whole, justice and a great service. The superhero genre has been suffering from an oversaturation and fatigue problem for a few movies now, and this shows in the darker, more subdued tone which has dominated the past several movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and it spread over into the DC Comics Universe (DCCU) with the unveiling of Batman Vs. Superman - the title alone lets you know that this is a darker, more antagonistic movie.
If we look at the source material this is not the point of these comics, or going to the original material myths, the whole point of these myths is to encourage cohesion and peace through strength. However, as all good art does, the MCU and DCCU are reflecting the times in which we live. I won't go into politics on this post, as it’s a Movie Review, but needless to say this discord which is felt in the world is precisely the time when we need our superhero's to reflect the best of humanity and our aspirations not echo the fear and division which is being sown as an excuse for violence and war.
Wonder Woman achieves this and puts in me min mind of the chivalry and charm of the original Captain America. It says something about the time period they are recreating and society today; we may have advanced technologically but have lost our sense of patriotism - not necessarily in ones country but in ones community and ones morality. Diana is steadfast in her position and has her beliefs challenged, and in some cases obliterated. This combination is why I le feeling charmed by this golden nugget of a movie.
The writing is as good as what can be expected for this genre, it has everything one could ask for: love, action, drama, mystery, intrigue etc. That isn't to say its perfect, there are few surprises and it plods along almost in an iambic pentameter predictability, but honestly at this point in the superhero movie expansion, that’s to be expected. As mentioned above I can't fault the direction in any sort of way, the use of space and slow-motion combined with the pace of special effects being immediately introduced makes for an easy-on-the-eyes viewing experience.
The acting is surprisingly great and as I say the comparison to Chris Evans with Haley Atwell to Gal Gadot and Chris Pine is apt. The charm and sense of honour with which great nations were built and seems to have been lost, both in reality and in the MCU & DCCU, is rekindled in Captain America: The First Avenger and now in Wonder Woman. The innocence, romantic & sexual tension is played beautifully between Gadot and Pine and it makes the reaction of Gadot to the ending all the more poignant.
For all its selling points and excellence there are some areas where it fell down. In true Snyder - producer - style the preamble is a little much, as such it could stand to trim fat in the editing process. This however is a minor annoyance and warrants only a minor point deduction. The reason there is such a heavy point reduction is down to its musical score. The music does not compliment the action on screen, it doesn't add - and in many sequences detracts from -  the drama and tension which is being constructed so beautifully by the camera work, the direction, the writing, the acting, the lighting; almost every aspect of the film is near perfect for these sequences except for the musical score. This is partly due to the jarring 'theme' for Wonder Woman which began with Hans Zimmer in Batman Vs. Superman; the fast paced, edgy electric guitar and drum beats which make for a much more rough around the edges character, perhaps more suitable to a Wolverine type character; certainly not that of Gadot's Diana Prince.
All of that having been said, the music whilst an important aspect, cannot detract from the charming nature of the film and the return to funny, fun and even slightly camp nature of the film and genre. So I give it a solid 9.0/10 low considering my high praise I know, but the musical score cannot be easily forgiven.
With that I leave you with the note of encouraging you to go and see this movie in cinemas near you; you won't be disappointed.

so this thought just came into my head and i want to explore it.
in my life i’ve only seen 3 films so far that i read as books before they became movies. im not counting comic books/graphic novels that became movies bcs thats a little different, books that became tv shows, or plays that became movies. but its interesting to think about that.
i didnt read harry potter until well after the films (all of them lmao) were released, i’ve never read how to train your dragon, i’ve never read the hobbit/lotr, the animated alice in wonderland came out in the 50s, i have only recently read the last unicorn, i read World War Z after the movie came out (and ive never seen all of the movie), and i read the neverending story when i was cast in the play.
the books that i read before they came out in film are; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Warm Bodies, and Goosebumps.
Goosebumps kind of fits but it was made into a tv series first, and im not sure if i read the books or saw the shows first. i did both, i know that much.
I read Warm Bodies only bcs I wanted to see the movie but thought the book would be cool to read (its amazing and has a completely different feel from the movie), and Lion Witch Wardrobe was bcs my dad read it to me when I was younger. That and The Magician’s Nephew are the only Narnia books ive ever read.
I was going to try and read Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children before the movie came out, but that work out for me.
if you want to count comics and graphic novels, then the list gets bigger. but comics already have the characters drawn out, so unlike books, you dont have an idea in your head on what the character looks like. that is so often changed in film, plus you loose so much detail and nuance when you go book to screenplay to film (this is also true with comics, but its still different)
However, and the biggest reason as to why I’m thinking about this, two movies will be coming out in the next few years, and both of them are based on my favorite books of all time (aside from the alice books of course).
The first is Captain Underpants! I know that this is a book series with words and pictures, so technically its a graphic novel series, but they’re kids books! and those tend to have an awful lot of pictures. This series was my FAVORITE (other than the alice books) as a kid!! they were fun, hilarious, relatable, and just all around super great. So when i saw the trailer for the animated film that’s coming out this year based on the series i was ECSTATIC!! Were it live-action i would be bummed out since kids picture books usually fair better when animated (im not a fan of the diary of a wimpy kid movies....) but this animation is handled a lot like The Peanuts movie. The animation look like a color and 3D version of the exact art style!! its wonderful and im SO EXCITED
The other one, and this i am VERY VERY nervous about, is Ready Player One. that is my favorite sci-fi novel ever. i often say its my favorite book ever bc it deserves more love! and i do so much love it. ive reread it i dont even know how many times. and what do you know, they’re making it into a movie!! when i heard about this i had so many mixed feelings, and most of it has to do with the style of the book and the characters.
-Ready Player One Spoilers-
In Ready Player One the protagonist starts out as a dirt poor, fat, unattractive teen boy, and later he gets more physically fit/healthy and rich. he claims to still be unattractive at this point (mostly bcs he jues doesnt like how he looks and he looses all his body hair). this is very important to the character! i’m afraid that in this movie hollywood will do as they always do and make him a skinny conventionally attractive teen from the get-go. people will probably pull the Holes excuse of “the filmmakers didnt want to make the actor gain a bunch of weight and then loose it all” BULLSHIT they can cast a fat actor! and through his training and as they film the movie he can loose some weight or they can use movie magic (like when they made chris evans a scrawny little thing). its not that hard, people.
Another character, and this was super important to me and was a big subplot, is that Wade best friend, Aech, whom he only knows through the game (OASIS) plays as a white, straight, guy avatar, but they’re actually a black lesbian named Helen. And she plays this avatar to protect herself and to get a job and be taken seriously within OASIS. is super sad she has to do this, but its a big part of her character. she’s also fat as well, and im REALLY worried that in the movie she’s going to be a skinny straight white girl.
Two other characters who have important characteristics are Art3mis (Samantha) and the creator of OASIS James Halliday. Art3mis is Wade later love interest and GF. She is notable bcs her avatar is just like her, a chubby girl with black hair, but sans her port-wine birthmark. I know they’ll keep her birthmark, since its an intimate reveal, but they’ll probably make her skinny and i hate it. Now it’s only half canon in the books, but i’ve chosen to go with it, but at one point Wade talks about James Halliday’s childhood and his personality and all that, and mentions that he might have been autistic. Now, since it’s only he “might have been” in the books, the filmmakers will probably not make him autistic. That’s fucking sad to me, I mean, it would be amazing!! This character is one of the smartest, most famous, most prolific video game programmers/designers in history!! And he’s autistic! That is some wonderful representation and the filmmakers should jump on that opportunity. It’ll inspire so many autistic people who have a passion for video games to pursue their dreams. But, i have a hunch they wont go with it.
Two other characters, Daito and Shoto, are Japanese young guys who claim to be brothers (and their characters are) but are just friends in the real world. My initial hunch was that the filmmakers would keep them Japanese, but given the recent whitewashing of important Japanese characters, I have my doubts.
My few other concerns are that this movie won’t have 80s pop culture as the main style and focus of the era they book is set in, not to mention OASIS and most of people’s interests. It’s incredibly important to the novel, but so many dystopian movies choose to go with gritty, futuristic, edgy stuff. The other concern is how they will handle the real life vs OASIS look, since over half of the book takes place inside a VR video game. I’ve seen news that they are utilizing VR technology, but i havent read too much. I’m wondering if they’ll animate all of OASIS and the avatars and action and anything in the video game! That would be awesome.
So these are all my thoughts. I havent looks at who they’ve cast yet, so I’m going to do that right now. I do know that Steven Spielberg is directing it, which could be fantastic or terrible. Okay, cast time.
------
So the IMDB doesnt say who is cast as Daito and Shoto, but Wikipedia says that Win Morisaki of PrizmaX will play him, which is great! I hope that’s what happens.
Art3mis/Samantha will be played by Olivia Cooke, who in my opinion is way too old. She’s older than me! The character’s age (i think) isnt mentioned in the book, but she’s got to be 17-20, and Olivia Cooke looks older than that. She’s also not chubby, but hey, maybe they’ll fit that. She also doesnt have the birthmark, but that’s gonna be makeup. (wouldve been cool if they found an actress with a port-wine stain on her face...)
Parzival/Wade will be played by Ty Sheridan. He was Cyclops in X-Men Apocalypse. He’s the right age, but way too fit and attractive. DAMN IT Well, I guess there’s always makeup and special effects, but i’m 80% sure now they wont make Wade fat.....
Aech/Helen will be played by Lena Waithe who is almost PERFECT. She’s much older than Aech, who is around 18, but like Samantha i imagine they’ll have make up and acting to cover it. My biggest concern is that she’s not fat like Aech, which means they’ll use a body suit or effects or Lena will gain weight, or they wont do anything.....
T.J. Miller will be playing I-r0k, who is another OASIS player and a bigtime douchebag jerk. This is perfect. We don’t know his age, or really anything other than his personality and avatar, and T.J. Miller is hilarious so this/ll be great.
Mark Rylance will be playing James Halliday, witch is fine by me. He’s not quite what I imagined, but thats what makeup and wigs are for. He’s worked a lot with Steven Spielberg, so that makes sense as to why he’s cast here. I just hope he can portray an autistic character well and with respect.... (would be better if he IS autistic but ya know.....)
Simon Pegg will be playing Ogden Morrow, the co-creator of OASIS, and thats perfect. No complaints.
Nolan Sorrento (the antagonist of the book and head of operations at Innovative Online Industries) will be played by Ben Mendelsohn, who was Director Krennic in Rouge One. He is much older and not quite and slimy as I imagined him, but this can totally work. I pictured Nolan Sorrento as Andrew Scott in my head, since he seems like the perfect evil, charismatic, slimy, attractive but ugly inside business man.
----
So, after looking at the current casting choices im a little let down, but still excited! I’ll have to wait patienly for the trailer, since this thing is coming out in 2018. Dang, this turned into a Ready Player One post, but its been on my mind recently.
If you read through all of this, good job! let me know what you think! i probably dont talk about Ready Player One very often but thats bcs i dont know anyone in real life (other than my dad) who has read this book, and the online fandom seems nonexistent. Who knows?
But yeah, I guess I made this post bcs I wasn’t able to share the collective nervousness, complaints, and excitement of Harry Potter or LotR or Percy Jackson fans when their fav books became movies.

Action movie comparison( The Dark Knight vs Avengers Infinity War).
This post will consist of the analysis and evaluation of two of my personal favorite action movies Christopher Nolan's 2008 master piece the Dark Knight and The the 2018 box office breaker Avengers Infinity War.
Tumblr media
The first of the two films I will be analyzing is The Dark Knight. The general plot of the movie is  With the help of allies Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman (Christian Bale) has been able to keep a tight lid on crime in Gotham City. But when a vile young criminal calling himself the Joker (Heath Ledger) suddenly throws the town into chaos, the caped Crusader begins to tread a fine line between heroism and vigilantism.
The first point I will be addressing is the characters following the character type theory of character types by Vladimir Propp. The hero of the movie is Batman(Christian Bale) a one man war on the constant crime of Gotham city. The films villain is the Joker(Heath Ledger) an “agent of chaos” as he puts it, the characters sole purpose is to make the hero break his one rule which is “I will not kill”. The helper of the movie is commissioner James Gordon(Gary Oldman) as batman's main ally throughout the movie as well as his main source of Intel for all crime within the city. While the film itself lacks a donor and a dispatcher it does contain a false hero. Harvey Dent(Aaron Eckhart) begins as the charismatic DA of Gotham city, dents most iconic quote in the film is a perfect foreshadow for whats to come. “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” is a brilliant tease to how Harvey eventually becomes the villain two face.
The movie itself contains many traits that would you would associate with an action movie explosions, gun shots, police cars and cops etc. What makes this movie so entertaining is how it grounds a comic book property in a grounded and realistic environment, the way in which Nolan managed to make the film feel as real as possible adds to its effectiveness. The shots within this movie themselves range from wide aerial shots of Gotham to batman's shaky cam brawls with criminals.
Tumblr media
The films most iconic shot is shown above, as batman stands over a pit of money that the joker had previously burnt, he realizes the joker’s true message about chaos. This shot alone is seen as the films most iconic and recognizable images and applies to Jokers established mentality of that some men just want to watch the world burn, which is beautifully symbolized by the Joker burning the most important asset in making the world function that being money.
Levi Strauss’ theory of binary opposites is applied to Batman and the Joker, the light and the darkness, the Joker’s quote “what would I do without you” highlights that one of them cannot exist without the other.
Tumblr media
The films itself possesses a closed narrative, the only real story present is batman's mission to stop the joker, no other characters possess any character moments that don’t involve batman except for maybe the joker.
Plot twists are not really present within the movie except for Harvey’s sudden transformation into the villainous two-face thanks to a severe injury he received due to do the joker’s actions. Harvey himself would fill the slot of the false hero according to Propp’s character theory as he starts as an ally to batman before becoming an antagonist. The teaching of Aristotle’s tragic hero applies to the character of Harvey also.
A macguffin is not needed in order for the plot to be moved along, instead the story continues through the characters actions.
This is my dark knight portion of the blog.
The second of the two action movies I will be discussing is Avengers infinity war, the cinematic event which acted as the culmination of 18 previous movies.
Tumblr media
The plot of this movie is  Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet -- the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.
One aspect that immediately differs this movie from the dark knight is the over whelming number of characters. Whilst the dark knight follows Propp’s character theory very well with one set hero, villain, helper etc, Infinity war has a total of around 30 heroes with only a handful of villains. The most likely main heroes of this movie are most likely Tony Stark (Robert Downy jr), Steve Rogers( Chris Evans) and Thor(Chris Hems worth). The primary objective of are heroes is to stop the films primary villain Thanos(Josh Brolin) and his plan to wipe out half the universes population. One thing that separates the character types within the two movies is the realistic factor. Whilst the dark knight is set in a grounded realistic setting, infinity war is set in a universe comprised of magic, aliens, Norse mythology and advanced technology. whilst Batman is for the most part a character of realism, the trio of heroes of infinity war consist of a super soldier, a literal god and a genius inventor with a armored suit to advanced to be deemed realistic. Taking a look at the films antagonists the Joker and Thanos one of whom is a psychotic madman and the other is the soul survivor of a deceased alien race. There is a clear difference between the two antagonists.
One thing to discuss is the antagonists motivation. In most action movies the main villain of the movie is evil just for the sake of being evil, however both the Joker and Thanos have such complex motives that each receive their own response. As mentioned above the Jokers main objective is to drive Batman to killing him which in turn would destroy everything the character stands for, whislt this is a interesting premise it lacks any real motive or logic behind it. Thanos on the other hand is the complete opposite, as previously mentioned Thanos is the soul survivor of his race who went extinct due to over population and lack of sustainable resources. He wishes to gather the films macguffn the six infinity stones and use their combined power to wipe out half the universe at once so that the other half of the universe can survive. Thanos’ sparked many debates upon movie goers who were discussing whether or not they sided with him or not. At the end of the day what defines an antagonist is their effect on the hero and their world. Whilst the joker failed to break Batman he did succeed in making the rest of Gotham see him as a murderer which in turn led to him hanging up the cowl. Thanos, in a shocking turn of events succeeds in completing his goal of destroying half the universe, with one snap of his fingers many beloved characters began to fade away to ash, the list included Spider man(Tom Holland), Doctor Strange(Benedict Cumberbatch), Black Panther( Chadwick Boseman) and many others. This led to Thanos having a both physical and metaphorical impact on the heroes.
Whilst the dark knight contains action grounded within login, meaning hand to hand combat and shootouts, infinity war uses its unrealistic to its advantage. Fight scenes are present throughout the movie spanning places like New York, Edinburgh, Africa and even another planet. The camera work incorporated into the movie consists of many close ups on characters faces to show their responses to certain things, transitions back and forth between characters as well as pans across the many environments to give a sense of scope are also used. This movie is packed full of action movie stereotypes with large scale explosions, desolated areas etc. The dark knights single hero left most of its action scenes feeling repetitive as they were all pretty much just Batman vs a single or multiple antagonists. Infinity war makes sure to incorporate its large character roster into its actions scenes, in terms of action set pieces the two films possess their own unique style.
The film does posses a potential Deus Ex Machina in the form of Thor as not only is he an actual God but he also turns the tide at the battle of Wakanda. Whilst the dark knight lacks the presence of this narrative device. This is not seen within the dark knight, the dyer situation is saved by those within it, not a seemingly out of nowhere occurrence which helps add to the films realistic tone.
Infinity war has very prominent  uses shot reverse shot which is when a characters eye line is met and then what they were looking at is revealed. This camera method acts as the introduction to both Thanos and Captain America. In the beginning of the film the character Loki(Tom Hiddleston) gazes towards an unknown figure before the camera pans over to reveal Thanos menacingly standing above a injured Thor, the scenes score adds to its effectiveness. Later on, while the characters of Scarlett Witch( Elizabeth Olsen) and Vison(Paul Bettany) are cornered by two of the movies second tier antagonists, immediately the characters glance over towards an unknown figure who is then revealed to be Captain America.
Unlike the dark knight which was a very self contained closed narrative piece, infinity war is an open narrative with the movies character being comprised of multiple groups throughout the whole movie. Each of the main trio I previously established lead a group to forward the plot. Iron man and company venture to space in order to combat Thanos head on, Thor along with two members of the guardians of the galaxy who are another team of marvel heroes who are dragged into the conflict are in search of a weapon powerful enough to kill Thanos, meanwhile down on earth the remaining heroes as well as black panthers army are led by Captain America as they combat the enemies attack on earth. This film is supposed to be the culmination of 18 movies worth of character development and its plays off very well.
Tumblr media
The main difference between these two movies is their scale and their character roster, while both have gone down in history as possessing two of cinemas best villains it is clear that the two of them are drastically unique. Whilst Propps character theory cannot be applied due to the shear number of characters however Levi Strauss’ theory of binary opposites can apply to the films forefront conflict of Tony Stark vs Thanos both of whom have been aware of eachother just not by name.
Tumblr media
This could be argued as the movies main conflict throughout as Tony and Thanos are at the forefront of their respective role as hero and villain.
Both movies possess different key themes, The Dark Knight and its themes of chaos and anarchy can be summed up by both the shot I previously showed but also the quote spoken to Batman by Alfred(Michael Cain), when referring to the joker he says “some men just want to watch the world burn” which again correlates to the shot of batman standing over the jokers pile of burnt money, the movies main tagline in advertisement being “welcome to a world without rules” . Infinity war is a film about loss and sacrifice which plays a role throughout every key scene. In order for Thanos to receive one of the six infinity stones he first had to sacrifice guaridans member Gamora who is in fact his own daughter as he is told by the stones guardian” you must lose that which you love most”. Later on in the movie when Thanos is confronted by Doctor Strange( Benedict Cumber batch) he tells the sorcerer supreme that “the hardest choices require the strongest will”. At the films end when Thanos succeeds in wiping out half of the universes population he is seen speaking briefly to the spirit of Gamora who asks him what achieving his goal cost to which he replies “everything”.
To evaluate both movies are of the action genre and comic book genre but are so drastically different in almost every aspect which is what makes both films some of cinemas most iconic pieces.

Rebelle Rally 2018
Rebelle Rally Sponsorship
Overlanding BC believes in giving back where we can and where appropriate to our brand. We fully support the amazing work and opportunity that the Rebelle Rally presents to female adventurers. It was a natural choice to support two teams local to us on their quest to complete the Rebelle Rally 2018.
Our sponsorship took on two forms, one of a cash donation and the other of education time.
Who
Deciding to support two teams was a perfect choice. We had two teams that live in the Pacific Northwest that we wanted to support, both of which are hugely enthusiast and experienced pairs. It’s a joy to help in a small way their journey with the Rebelle Rally. For more information and to help support them, please follow the link to their team bio’s!
Team Free Range Dames
Elise Bent and Mercedes Lilienthal are the Team Free Range Dames. We decided to help them by a cash donation towards their fundraising campaign. We know both Elise and Mercedes from the Overlanding world and have spent time with them both in Arizona, Oregon and British Columbia. We wish them safe and fun adventures on their Rebelle Rally quest.
Team Anamcara
Penny Dale & Thayer Cook are Team Anamcara. We wanted to help them by providing some driver training both in generic off road driving techniques and training specific to their vehicle and its technology. We have spent time with both of them in Arizona and British Columbia including a fantastic three days of teaching on our iconic Whipsaw Trail. We wish them safe and fun adventures on their Rebelle Rally quest.
What Is The Rebelle Rally
The Rebelle Rally is a unique women’s-only traditional navigational competition held each October. This rally was started in 2016, by Emily S. Miller, a successful rally race driver and off-road instructor. It isn’t a race for speed, but a challenging vehicular-based event that uses your navigation skills and driving wits to find hidden checkpoints across the Nevada and California desert, as well as Glamis sand dunes. Rally teams need to find each checkpoint at the right time, in the right distance, while only using only maps, compass, and a road book.
No technology is allowed during the 10-day rally. Teams of two surrender their phones, Wi-Fi enabled DSLRs, GPSs, and all other tracking/navigational helpers. It’s returning to a time when explorers navigated with map and compass, vs. a TomTom to tell them where to turn.

Behind the Music with the DJ Judge Show on Deconstruct
My music is a dream come true. Making music with old and new friends and in some cases people I never would have dreamed I'd play with.
Band Name: DJ Judge Show- Strength In Numbers (The Fools Rush In vs. The Cosmic Crime League)
Person Interviewing: Odell Robinson
Song name: Deconstruct (Ode to the Moms) feat. Cortney D and Charles Carrasco
The song is about the day in the life of a Mom with challenging children. Lyrics are written by Cortney DeAugustine who is a talented musician who happens to be a Mom of 3 kids. The music is inspired by Led Zep's song Kashmir, hence the "deconstruct"
My music is a reflection of my life. Good friends and a beautiful family. My project Strength In Numbers features some of the best musicians in the Sacramento area and from around the world. My music is a dream come true. Making music with old and new friends and in some cases people I never would have dreamed I'd play with. It's rock n roll, it's a poppy, slamming good time.
I play a unique instrument. I play 12 string bass. The bass is featured prominently on the song "Deconstruct.." My direction is forward, making as much music as I can with as many guitars as possible.  Its shame things are the way they are. From giggin' to record companies, the "business" is a drag. Being a musician today: The art of making music is better than ever. Technology has made it so I can record with someone in Italy or Brooklyn, NY (which I did.) Gear is crazy and fun to integrate into my music. Being a musician is great. Why you love to create music: It's just what I do.
What piece of music advice forever changed your way of thinking?: I don't know who said it, but multiple people at some point or another have said to me, " Don't worry about it. Just do your thang!" So I do my "thang" with no fear... and I don't worry about "it".

'Spider-Man: Homecoming': Did Marvel Universe Help or Hurt the Movie?
The latest Spidey reboot finally gives fans what they’ve been begging for, but is it what they really needed?
[Warning: This story contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming]
One of the better running gags in the new film Spider-Man: Homecoming is how 15-year old Peter Parker, in an attempt to hide his superheroic alter ego from his friends and family, says that he’s in an internship program for Stark Industries. Better that than revealing that he’s the viral-video sensation Spider-Man, enabled by Tony Stark as a possible future recruit for the Avengers. The Stark connection makes this new Spider-Man a good deal different than earlier cinematic iterations of the character, which isn’t always in the film’s favor.
The newest version of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man (Tom Holland) was introduced in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, when Robert Downey, Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man brought him into the fold to fight against Captain America and his half of the Avengers. As Spider-Man: Homecoming unfolds, Peter is antsy and impatient to get back into the fray, but constantly told to wait by Tony and his chauffeur/right-hand man Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). Whatever rebellious streak previous Peter Parkers displayed on screen, it’s amplified in Homecoming, as Peter investigates an underground criminal ring that’s using alien technology to nasty ends, eventually causing a near-catastrophe on the Staten Island Ferry where only Iron Man is able to stop human lives from being lost. This leads Stark to take Peter’s tricked-out Spidey suit away from the kid, a la a father taking his son’s favorite toy away from him as punishment.
The surrogate father-son relationship between Tony and Peter is an interesting dynamic that isn’t explored as much as it should. (Whether it’s for storytelling reasons or because Downey was only available briefly, Tony’s only in a few scenes of the film. At one point, he’s literally phoning it in: Tony calls Peter via an Iron Man suit to scold him briefly.) But it also speaks to something that slightly drags on the overall effect of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Earlier this summer, Marvel released the delightfully entertaining Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which managed to pull off a near-impossible feat: feel totally separate from the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Star-Lord and friends occupy space within the MCU, it’s possible to watch both Guardians movies without knowing much about Tony Stark, Thor, Steve Rogers, or the other Avengers. Spider-Man: Homecoming, like basically every other MCU movie, operates in a much different reality. The pre-title scene, where we’re introduced to bad guy Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), takes place immediately after the climactic battle of 2012’s The Avengers; later, we see an iPhone-shot video from the deserted airport hangar where the big hero vs. hero fight in Captain America: Civil War takes place. Guardians of the Galaxy, to its credit, doesn’t require past MCU knowledge for you to enjoy it. Spider-Man: Homecoming expects you to come prepared.
The moments when Spider-Man: Homecoming works best, largely, have nothing to do with the grander MCU. (Of the MCU regulars, the one who generates the most laughs is Chris Evans as Captain America, showing up via public service announcements played at Peter’s high school.) Peter Parker, in each of three cinematic encarnations over 15 years, has always been grounded by starting as a high-school student, but Homecoming is the first time where it feels like more than lip service. Peter is very much a nerd–he and his buddy Ned (Jacob Batalon) plan on spending time building a Lego version of the Death Star — but director and co-writer Jon Watts, along with the other five credited writers, manage to make the other kids in Peter’s circle seem like actual teenagers. Even a throwaway gag featuring the cheesy production quality of the school’s student-run news show makes the teen-movie chunk of Homecoming feel at home with forebears like The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (the latter of which gets visually called out in a good joke).
In the second half, especially, Homecoming becomes more about Spider-Man’s place in the MCU, if he has one. Though the film tries to keep a decent balance between the superhero and teenage-angst sides of the story, specifically by revealing an unexpected connection that Keaton’s character has to Peter’s home life, it still leans too hard on the former. The explanation is easy: even after Peter, when offered an official place among the Avengers at the end, decides to “stay close to the ground” in New York and help out the little guy, we all know he’s going to show up in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War, and may be one of the new focal points of the MCU like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. So he has to become a bigger part of the MCU and move past his realistic roots.
Being beholden to the established rules of the MCU doesn’t mean that Spider-Man: Homecoming is any better for it. Holland’s a winning Peter Parker, and Spider-Man remains one of the most entertaining of all movie superheroes; when Peter says he wants to fight for the little guy, it’s believable because Spider-Man has always felt blue-collar. Spider-Man: Homecoming, like most of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is bright, colorful, and largely enjoyable. But like most of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it drags the most when it has to build up the future of the franchise instead of staying in the present.

The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.
[Video Game Deep Cuts is a weekly newsletter from curator/video game industry veteran Simon Carless, rounding up the best longread & standout articles & videos about games, every weekend. This week's highlights include videos on the making of Raw Data & the surprise debut of Scanner Sombre, plus the history of seminal NES emulator NESticle.
A quick and early newsletter this week, since we're in Texas for a few days visiting friends game-centric & non game-centric - among them Venus Patrol/ex-IGF supremo Brandon Boyer (& world's cutest megadog Scout), as well as Gamasutra publisher/EIC Kris Graft.
One thing I did find interesting from the links I still managed to excavate, though - the recent GDC video linked below about the making of VR standout Raw Data has a fairly high dislike-to-like ratio compared to other GDC videos (more dislikes than normal).
Why? Well, partly because the game dared to hit Early Access at $40 USD with a fairly linear story, by the look of it. If the hope was that VR would ensnare the 'core gamer', I'm starting to wonder whether VR experiences are even core gamer-compatible in terms of narrative, linearity & replayability. Which would be a pretty big stumbling block, if true... Anyhow, until next time?
- Simon, curator.]
-------------------
The future of dialogue in games (Alex Wiltshire / PC Gamer) "Getting to discover the politics and personalities of a new location should feel like a reward, but the same formulaic text dump from city to city can make you feel awfully weary. Being NPCsplained at with screeds of exposition and feeling you’re taking little meaningful part in it all, game dialogue can make you want to run back into the hills."
[Game] Story - What Is It Good For? (Thomas Grip / Gamasutra Blogs) "This "go write a book instead" attitude isn't new. One of my favorite articles on the subject is Jesper Juul's "Games Telling Stories?". Interestingly, I pretty much agree with all of the points that Juul raises, but reject most of his conclusions. I think that video games are very well suited for telling stories and that there is no inherent conflict. [SIMON'S NOTE: another response to that Bogost article, of course!]"
Early Access Lessons From Raw Data (Chris Hewish & Mike McTyre / GDC / YouTube) "In this 2017 VRDC at GDC session, Survios' Chris Hewish and Mike McTyre break down the technological and artistic challenges, insights, and decisions that continue to influence and evolve the development of Raw Data and helped it climb the Steam charts while still in Early Access. "
When Fans Take Their Love For Twitch Streamers Too Far (Cecilia D'Anastasio / Kotaku) "It was one in the morning when the Twitch streamer Ellohime heard a knock at his front door. He had been grinding away at a PC game that night in December 2015 while his infant daughter and fiancée slept. His 22-year-old brother was crashing in the central Florida home, too, and it wasn’t unheard of for him to invite friends over at odd hours. Ellohime left his desk and went downstairs to the door."
Analysis: 'Scanner Sombre' (Errant Signal / YouTube) "Scanner Sombre is the latest game by Introversion Software, the team that brought you Uplink, Darwinia, DEFCON, and Prison Architect. It's definitely pretty, but what if anything is going on beneath the surface?"
Inside Marvel vs Capcom Infinite: an in-depth interview about accessibility, combos, ditching cross-platform play and sweat equity (Alex Donaldson / VG247) "I sat down with producer Mike Evans and associate producer Peter ‘combofiend’ Rosas to talk about these challenges and chat about Infinite’s gameplay systems in-depth. Rosas in particular is a voice that carries some weight with the fans – he’s a community hire of Capcom’s, and is famous in the fighting game tournament world for performing one of the greatest fighting game comebacks of all time with a lone, vulnerable Spencer in MVC3. He knows his Marvel. Here’s our chat."
Epic, near-EVE-worthy troll sabotages Elite: Dangerous community event (Lee Hutchinson / Ars Technica) "In the vast simulated galaxy of Elite: Dangerous, a years-old mystery concerning an unknown region of space called the Formidine Rift was poised to take a dramatic leap forward on Saturday. An NPC going by the name of Salomé was preparing for a frantic, fast return to the main inhabited core worlds with information that would advance the mystery’s plot. Eliteplayers could choose to try to escort Salomé to safety, or could try to gun her down."
Gamasutra Plays Playerunknown's Battlegrounds with Brendan Greene (Gamasutra Team / Twitch / YouTube) "The Gamasutra crew sits down with Playerunknown, aka Brendan Greene, to talk about the success of Bluehole's latest game Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. [SIMON'S NOTE: the Gamasutra crew are doing more and more live Twitch chats with devs, & here's a particularly notable recent one - more archived on YouTube here.]"
Tumbleseed and the obscure mechanical arcade machine that inspired it (Andrew Webster / Verge) "It never went on to become a huge hit, but for game designer Greg Wohlwend, Ice Cold Beer proved inspirational. So much so that he, along with a small team, set about taking the core mechanic and expanding on it for the new video game Tumbleseed. “We’ve got to be true to the source material,” says Wohlwend of the development process, “out of love and respect for this awesome game that not a lot of people know about.”"
Boom, Headshot! (Martin Annander / Gamasutra Blogs) "However, let’s not rail against violence. That’s not what this is about. Violence can be thrilling, its narrative exciting, and the skills required to master the gameplay can be quite rewarding to attain. We’ve played first-person shooters for decades for reasons other than murder. [SIMON'S NOTE: from a couple of weeks back, but only just spotted it - a powerful partner to Ste Curran's 'Double Tap' GDC 2017 talk?]"
How the Mixed Reality Game 'Bad News' Brings Towns Like 'Twin Peaks' to Life (Steven T. Wright / Glixel) "We were inside a sprawling exhibition hall at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art,where a trio of PhD students from the University of California, Santa Cruz are showing off their project, Bad News – an interactive experience that, much like a play, incorporates aspects of real-world performance."
The Story of NESticle, the Ambitious Emulator That Redefined Retro Gaming (Ernie Smith / Motherboard) "The product of a talented programmer who designed a hit shareware game while he was still in high school, NESticle was so good that everyone looked past the fact its name was basically a dick joke."
In Gacha We Trust: The Appeal of Japanese Free to Play Games (Allen Kwan / Medium) "Richard Garfield recently penned a manifesto on free to play (F2P) games that encourage spending, or what he calls “skinnerware”. While there is perhaps a little bit of irony in the fact that the person responsible for creating one of the bigger “skinnerware” games, Magic the Gathering, writing a manifesto decrying the exploitative nature of these types of games, reading his post made me reflect on the F2P games that I play. [SIMON'S NOTE: this editorial is a little old, but popped up on social media recently & is well worth revisiting!]"
Faithfully updating the art of a classic in Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (Joel Couture / Gamasutra) "Ben Fiquet spent a great deal of time playing the 1989 Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap as a child, wandering around its wondrous worlds. The game made a strong impression on him. These feelings would well up again, years later, when Fiquet found himself working on the recently-released remake, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap."
Rock and Roll Days of StarCraft: a Development Retrospective (StarCraft: Remastered / Blizzard Entertainment) "The year was 1997, and Blizzard art director Samwise Didier’s ’65 Mustang was producing an alarming amount of smoke. The ancient vehicle was held together by little more than duct tape and prayer, and by the time Didier pulled into his garage one sunny Southern California afternoon, it was clear that neither countermeasure would suffice for long."
Interview: The creator of the Conquests adventures on what made them special (GOG.com) "During the steady stream of Quest and Larry games that established [Sierra's] legacy, a couple of less-known but no less-loved titles came along: Conquests of Camelot and Conquests of the Longbow. To celebrate their long-awaited arrival on GOG.com we've approached their creator, Christy Marx, for a chat on what made them so special to her and to so many adventure game fans."
'Hearthstone' Director Ben Brode Talks Surprise Success and Tough Choices (Joshua Calixto / Glixel) "As Hearthstone’s director, Ben Brode has a firm understanding of how much is riding on the game’s complex design. If he and his team tune things to be too random, the competitive scene suffers. Nerf a card too much, and players start to feel like their monetary investments are losing value."
Tom Hall: 5 key design lessons I learned directing Wolfenstein 3D (Jon Irwin / Gamasutra) "Wolfenstein 3D came out exactly 25 years ago, on May 5th, 1992. Nothing was the same after that day. “We knew it was new and special, but we were pretty blown away by the reception,” says Tom Hall, the director and co-designer of the game."
A three-year-old Elite Dangerous mystery is finally unravelling (Wesley Yin-Poole / Eurogamer) "Elite Dangerous players have taken a significant step in solving a mystery that has befuddled its most rabid secret-hunters ever since the game came out. The Formidine Rift mystery, as it's known, kicked off back in 2014 with the release of Drew Wagar's novel Elite Reclamation. Since then players have searched for clues in an attempt to solve this mystery. This week, a major discovery was made that suggests a solution is near."
Lessons from Escape Rooms: Designing for the Real World and VR (Laura E. Hall / GDC / YouTube) "In this 2017 GDC session, escape room designer Laura E. Hall discusses the design fundamentals and structures necessary for creating real-world experiences that offer not only entertainment, but create immersion and transportation for players in order to understand how "physical play" can be a foundation for virtual reality design and beyond. "
