somewhere in time, somewhere in the universe we're in our kitchen, together, baking chocolate chips cookies and dancing while waiting for them to be ready. somewhere in this world we're tasting the cookie dough left out and laughing while staring at the ones in the oven. somewhere in this crazy and nonsensical timeline we're watching them grow, our children, under our eyes. I can hear billy joel's songs play in the background, a music we both forgot to love. so you turn around, a chocolate chip on your upper lip, and leave me alone in front of the oven. alexa, increase the volume, I hear you say just a moment before seeing you back in front of me, down on your knees. you glance at me. I glance back at you. I recognize the song―just the way you are―and I can't help singing, moving my lips word by word. and you smile, shy as your always, as you're not the kind of person who’d dance or sing at the top of his lungs in front of someone else. but I do, though I'm a little bit off-key. you don't care, you go on smiling and then pull me up on my feet. we start singing together and moving around, pretending to be awesome dancers. I didn't know you knew the words. you knew billy joel. I gave him a try, you say, like I gave every song of that messy playlist of yours a try. we have so different tastes, and yet you did it. you listened to that my-father-would-love-it kind of music that I love so much (you said it on one of our first dates). I lose myself in the meantime, and would've forgot about the cookies if it weren't for you, who constantly checked on them. then, the timer rings and billy joel's voice suddenly seems to disappear from our tiny flat. neighbours'll envy us, you said proudly on our moving in day. and perhaps you were right. I pull them out of the oven, placing the tray on the counter. they're perfect, I satisfyingly state. you bring me closer, kiss my temple and say obviously, we did them. we've always made up a successful team, after all.
somewhere in the future we’re waiting for the cookies to get dry and crispy. we’re looking at them silently, our heads in our hands, billy joel’s songs back out of nowhere―because I can’t remember you talking to alexa once again. somewhere in a flat in a indistinct place of an unspecified european capital city you’re tidying up the mess I always bring with me. I’m checking the cookies, their now golden and crisp look. they’re getting cold, I tell you, more and more excited. we can eat them, then. and you sound even more impatient that me. we taste one together, a cookie for two. you have chocolate on your nose, I have it under my nails. but we don’t care―the cookies are fabulous, we baked them.

Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies 🍪 🍪 🍪
Tumblr media
I feel like everyone fears straying from their family recipes, or telling your mother that, no, you’re not using her recipe today. my mom’s chocolate chip cookies are infamously perfect, but I’ve never been a big fan of sticking to a recipe. I know if you’re new to baking at home, changing up the recipe is sacrilege, but if these were born of altering a family recipe, imagine what you can do!
ingredients!
here are your ingredients listed in the order you use them, and apologies ahead of time for my metric users.
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- vanilla extract
- semisweet chocolate chunks. yk what I hate? stable chocolate chip cookies. add as much chocolate as you can fit, and use chocolate chunks, not chips! chips hold their shape, chocolate chunks make pools of chocolate in every bite and I’m tired of pretending they’re inferior.
instructions!
(oven at 350F, don’t forget to prep your pans ahead of time)
1. toast that butter
I promise this step is the key to delicious cookies. melt the butter in a saucepan and let simmer until golden brown (about 10 minutes). be careful, browned butter has a habit of popping and sometimes exploding if you don’t stir it enough. once that’s toasty, pour it in a freezer safe bowl and chill until solid (I left mind for 45 minutes).
2. (most) dry ingredients
easy peasy. whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. set aside.
3. sweet!
once your butter is chilled, I recommend letting it thaw out a little bit or zapping it in the microwave until you can mix it easily, because next we’re breaking out the hand mixer. beat the butter in a large bowl for about 30 seconds. nothing special, just break it up. next, add in your sugars, and mix until light and fluffy. then add vanilla and eggs, and beat for another 3 minutes.
4. add! more! stuff!
gradually add your dry ingredients. simple enough? once it’s a cohesive dough, add in your chocolate chunks. literally so many chocolate chunks. I used a whole bag, and if you can fit more, add more. who doesn’t like loaded cookies?
5. scoop and bake
self explanatory. I personally like huge cookies. I use an ice cream scoop, and they were the size of my hand (granted my hands resemble that of a 10 year old boys). give a good deal of space between your cookies, because they spread far. bake for 9-12 minutes, until they’re golden on the outside and puffy in the center.
6. cool and enjoy!
when you take them out of the oven, they will continue to cook. the centers of these cookies will look very fluffy coming out, but tap the pan on the counter a few times and they’ll deflate. let them rest before you remove them to cool on a wire rack. or eat them warm! I can’t tell you what to do, but I recommend the latter.
have fun!! I’m rooting for you <3

Homebake Cookies!
I got an urge to make some homebake cookies yesterday, so I made them! They have milk chocolate chunk and white chocolate chip fillings! I'm going to use the leftover cookie dough to make chocolate spread filled cookies, since I had a flash of inspiration yesterday with that! It's always when nice when cookies have a nice melty chocolate center, don't you think?
Here's the ones I made yesterday!

Baked from scratch! I hope they look tasty enough!

Sour Cherry Muffins Recipe
I inherited SO MANY sour cherries recently. Here's my #muffin #recipe. https://wp.me/pLP9Y-5cI #sourcherries #chocolatechunk #yummy #mildlycriticalofothers
With a Chocolate Chunk Sour Cherry Variation My father-in-law recently passed away. My mother-in-law proceeded him in 2021. With both of them now passed, my husband and his siblings are in the midst of settling the estate, cleaning out the house, and selling most of it. Among other things, I inherited a freezer full of frozen sour cherries. There were gallons and gallons of them going back to…
