“The mesa used to have a thriving kingdom, or at least, the books say that.” One librarian says to Jimmy, hand clutching a leather bound book- a history book, it looks like. “Mezelea, it used to be called. The most colorful kingdom to ever be built.”
“What happened?” Jimmy finds himself asking despite knowing the story himself. Pix told him the story before they parted ways. He never really bothered to ask why and how Pix knew about Mezelea and talked about it in such details. He’s a historian, an archeologist, of course he knows things like this.
But the way he talks about the Mezelean King like a good friend is kinda weird.
“The books say that a Rapture happened and ruined the world. The king then died of sadness when his palace was destroyed and his wife disappeared.” The librarian said.
“Jo- King Joel was devastated when he found out that the debris reached his kingdom. The palace was hit with a massive debris right in the middle of it.” Pix told him when he asked about the Rapture. He sounds so melancholic, eyes distant like he’s remembering being there. There’s a look in his eyes that screamed ‘I saw the aftermath. I was there’. It was gone as quickly as it came. “And then he found out that his wife, the Ocean Queen disappeared when the ocean dried out. Then he died, of sadness, probably.”
“Oh- oh jeez that’s dark.” He says, lowering his hat in respect. The librarian gives him a sad smile.
“Yeah, it is. It sounds like a simple legend but we have found some relics that proves the kingdom's existence. It is hard to find anything in this land. It has been thousands of years after all, long enough to bury the ruins.”
“It’s been thousands of years but who knows, maybe you’ll unearth something from that empire.” Pix said before they parted ways. Jimmy didn’t dwell on it much.
“Anyway, if you need a place to stay for the night, we have a spare room.” They offer, but Jimmy shakes his head.
“Thanks for the offer, but I’ve already settled on the edge of the mesa. I'll come back and tell you when I find something interesting.” He promises, a grin on his face. The librarian smiles back, waving.
“You better be!” At that, they both bid each other goodbye and Jimmy makes his way back to his soon-to-be home. With an idea for an empire and a plan to maybe play archeologist at some point.

Humans are weird: lifespan
Clara had known the mission was a bad idea. That guess was reinforced when the ship crashed. The other members of her little crew had died on impact, but she’d only been injured. From her guess it was just a few broken or otherwise messed up bones- annoying, yes, but not irreparable. She’d tried communicating with her crew, sending out transmissions and mentally screaming for Indigo, but nothing came to her rescue.
By some miracle, the air was breathable. The climate was on the warmer side, reminding her of the Caribbeans. It was quite nice, and if it weren’t for the three moons, binary star system, and the lavender sky, she would’ve been able to believe this was in a familiar system.
She stumbled out of the ship, swearing to herself when she saw what a wreck it was; there was no way she’d be getting back into the air with that.
Instead, she looked around. It appeared that she’d landed in a field of sorts- on the horizon she saw what appeared to be a civilization, maybe a town, and around her were tall trees that had pear-like fruits on them. A quick scan said they were edible, so she grabbed one. It was perfectly at her shoulder level, which she appreciated. The fruit was tasty, reminding her of earth’s apples or the kalrin-fruits Indigo had introduced to her.
It took a few minutes, but soon Clara had made herself a splint for her broken arm and gathered what she could from the ship’s remains.
She was about to make her way towards the town when she heard a strange chittering noise behind her. The translator didn’t pick it up, which either meant this was an undiscovered language or it was broken- it was really a 50/50 chance. Turning around, she saw a small creature, maybe reaching up to her knees, chittering at her. It seemed to be a bit scared, but still interested. It gestured for her to follow it, which she did, being led to another small town. All around her were the little creatures, rushing about, some coming up to her. They were cute, in a way, with mint-green skin, four arms, fur down their backs, six large eyes- well, she assumed they were eyes- and a bipedal walking pattern. They led her to a building with what appeared to be a collapsed roof, which only reached up to her head. Easily enough she fixed it, and the creatures seemed happy, surrounding her and making those same chittering noises, much more happy-sounding this time.
The Chiri, as Clara called them, were a fascinating civilization. They had a complex language of clicks, chirps, and assorted chittering sounds that took Clara a while to learn properly. Their planet was far faster than earth, one of earth’s weeks was the equivalent of a month for them, and an earth month was the equivalent of a year. Most Chiri only lived for a few of their years, but their lives were filled with celebration. It felt like every week Clara got invited to a new celebration- either a wedding, a coming of age, a new harvest, or even a funeral. Even though Clara took only around six months to fully recover, by that point she had become known as a Chiri guardian. She’d been on the planet for a number of their years, becoming a guardian figure. Where her ship had crashed was turned into a shrine of sorts, new towns being built around it. In exchange, Clara protected them, guided them, and shared her knowledge with them. She’d even learned their language to the point where it was as fluent as any other, even without her translator, which she was fairly certain had broken.
The Chiri had given Clara a new name that they called her, Xi-Rai’du. Most of the children knew her as Xixi.
Clara trusted her friends, they’d taken her in and healed her. They felt like family just as much as her crew on the ship did. Despite their short lives, the Chiri were a people who valued learning. They passed down stories from generation to generation, and Clara would help to remember them as well. She taught them to write, transcribing their stories.
One of the young rushed towards Clara, a little girl who had only recently become old enough to talk. “Xixi! Xixi! There you are!” The little one, her name Si’ra, reached out her four arms for Clara to lift her up, making a high-pitched noise that was roughly the same as a laugh. “The celebration was about to start without you, come! Dari and Lixai want you there!”
Clara nodded, smiling. Dari and Lixai were getting married, and Clara didn’t want to miss out. Still carrying Si’ra, Clara made her way towards the town.
All around the town were banners decorated in vibrant colors, flowers in every windowsill and a clear trail of petals leading to where the wedding would take place. Clara had always loved the Chiri’s celebrations, they were all filled with laugher, music, dancing and festivities that could go for days. As soon as Clara showed up, she was surrounded by lively music, cheers from the Chiri who’d arrived for the celebration, and the greeting of Dari and Lixai, both wearing gorgeous formal attire. Clara bowed to them, smiling as she let Si’ra down, watching her rush towards the other children to join in there game.
“Lady Xi-Rai’du, welcome.” Lixai spoke first, joy clear in all six of her eyes.
Clara shook her head, “Today isn’t a day for celebrating me, it’s for you two.” She gestured to the crowd, “They’re all here for you- so go, celebrate! You’ve earned it.”
Lixai and Dari smiled, taking Clara’s hand and leading her into the crowd.
The wedding was a joyous one, and Clara couldn’t help but feel incredibly proud of Lixai and Dari. Weddings were a major event for both humans and chiri, although the chiri certainly had a more lively celebration all the way through.
The next day, Clara went to the cave where the Chiri kept murals of all their major events. She smiled as she looked, seeing paintings of herself defending the town from wild beasts, celebrating amongst them, and even when she’d first arrived, now over a year ago.
Deep down though, she knew couldn’t stay. Her crew still needed her, and she knew the Chiri had to grow into a full civilization on their own. She was torn out of her mind though when she heard what sounded like screams outside. Sa’ri rushed in, panicked. “Xixi! Help! There are- there’s something outside!”
Clara, admittedly, panicked. She picked Sa’ri up again, letting the girl lead her out. As soon as she left she saw the cause of the panic. In the sky above was a ship. Her ship.
As soon as it landed, Clara put herself between the ship and the Chiri. She faced the panicked crowd, trying to keep order. “All of you! Please, calm down. These newcomers mean no harm.”
The Chiri trusted her, more or less calming down. Clara sighed in relief, facing the ship as the bridge lowered. What she saw surprised her- another human.
It took a moment for Clara to realize they were speaking English- she’d become so used to hearing the chiri’s language of chirps and squeaks- but when she registered what they were saying she almost laughed. It was a declaration of peace, saying they were only doing a recovery mission. Apparently they’d finally gotten the distress signal Clara had sent when she first was crashing, tracing it back to her.
Clara approached the ship, Sa’ri in her arms, and faced the stranger.
“If you’re looking for the recon group that was sent out here a little over a year ago..” she sighed, “I’m all that’s left. I’ve been living on this planet for the past year, and the civilization you see have helped me. They nursed me back to health, gave me a place to stay, and trusted me.” Behind her were the people who she’d protected for what were generations to them. “My name is Clara.. but it is also Xi-Rai’du, and these are the chiri.”
The human seemed shocked, but they didn’t do anything agressive.
“The crew thought you’d died..” they muttered, “they hired me as a replacement. How are you even alive?!”
She couldn’t help but laugh, “I told you. The chiri took me in, and the planet’s atmosphere is breathable.” she put Sa’ri down, and she hugged my leg before running back to her family, as though sensing that this would be the last time she saw her. “I assume you’re here to bring me back now that you know I’m alive?”
They nodded, gesturing for Clara to follow them.
“Just give me a second,” Clara turned to face the Chiri, bowing to them and switching back to their language. “Thank you, all of you. Now I must leave.. but I will return. Reach for the stars, and perhaps we will meet in the cosmos one day.”
The chiri seemed to understand, solemnly accepting that their guardian was leaving.
“Xixi!” Sa’ri called up from the crowd, “I’ll find you again, I promise!”
She turned, nodding to the fellow human. “Bring me back onto the ship.”
Maybe, just maybe, part of the reason she’d turned was because she wanted to hide the tears forming in the corners of her eyes. But when she returned onto the ship, Clara was reminded of where she belonged, amongst her family in the stars. The chiri had been kind, but she had to go. Besides, when Indigo saw her again, xir expression just about made all of the time away worth it.

In 1803, a round vessel drifted ashore on the Japanese coast and a beautiful woman emerged, wearing strange clothing and carrying a box. She was unable to communicate with the locals, and her craft was marked with mysterious writing. This story of an utsurobune, or “hollow ship,” in the province of Hitachi (now Ibaraki Prefecture) is found in many records of the Edo period (1603–1868), and Tanaka Kazuo, professor emeritus at Gifu University, has studied the topic for many years. What drew him away from his main research area, applied optics, to investigate this curious episode? And what really took place?
Tumblr media
“Like a Flying Saucer”
Tanaka says he began to research the ship after the deadly subway sarin attacks in 1995 by the Aum Shinrikyō cult. “There was a lot of coverage of Aum founder Asahara Shōkō's prophecies and claims to be able to float in the air. Yet the cult’s senior members were part of the scientific elite. I started giving lectures considering paranormal phenomena from a scientific perspective, which meant that I was collecting all kinds of materials for teaching, such as about UFOs in the United States and Japanese folklore. While doing so, I came across the utsurobune legend.” He adds, “Long before the American UFO stories, the craft depicted in Edo-period Japanese documents for some reason looked like a flying saucer. This was fascinating to me.”
UFOs became a modern sensation after the media reported US businessman Kenneth Arnold as having witnessed “flying saucers” on June 24, 1947. A flood of similar stories followed from around the world. Most famously, a UFO was alleged to have crashed to the ground near Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. “In the end, though, no wrecks or alien bodies were recovered,” Tanaka says. “There was only the ambiguous testament of witnesses. It was the same with all the other UFO stories from around the world—they were mysteries without any substantial evidence. The utsurobune legend, however, has a number of documents to examine as leads, so in this sense, for researchers it’s a mystery with substance.”
A book published in English by Tanaka Kazuo on his research.  There are similar oral traditions about “hollow ships” across Japan in the Edo period. Tanaka’s research is focused on the various documents that describe the 1803 incident in Hitachi and include illustrations of a beautiful woman and a strange vessel, although they cite different dates. One of the best-known sources is the Toen shōsetsu (Toen Stories), an 1825 collection recording fantastic rumors, which was written by the Toenkai literary circle and edited by Kyokutei Bakin, famous for his lengthy historical romance Nansō Satomi hakkenden (The Eight Dog Chronicles). Others are Nagahashi Matajirō's 1844 work Ume no chiri (Plum Dust), as well as collections like Ōshuku zakki (Ōshuku Notes), Hirokata zuihitsu (Essays by Hirokata), and Hyōryūki-shū (Records of Castaways), which gathers stories of foreign ships washed up in Japan and of Japanese sailors who came ashore overseas.

Picture 1-  Hyōryūki-shū (Records of Castaways) by an unknown author. The text describes the woman as being around 18 to 20 years of age, well-dressed, and beautiful. Her face is pale, and her eyebrows and hair are red. It is impossible to communicate with her, so it is unclear where she is from. She holds a plain wooden box as though it is very important to her and keeps her distance. There is mysterious script written in the boat. (Courtesy Iwase Bunko Library in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture)

Title: The Dango Shop
Prompt: You've recently opened up a dango shop and Team 7 is excited to try it.
Pairing: Kakashi x Reader
Rating: E
A/N: This was meant to be angst and it turned into fluff lol Also, I am 3/3 on sitting down to write this week. It's amazing what a week away from the corporate world will do for your brain.
***
Dango.
160g joshinko non-glutinous rice flour
40g shiratamako glutinous rice flour
60g sugar
200ml hot water
1 tsp matcha green tea powder
red food colouring.
***
Spring
“C’mon, Kakashi-sensei,” you heard a shrill voice gripe. The commotion caused you to look up, peering though the steam emitting from the warm stove of your dango shop. When no one arrived through the felt fabric curtain, you returned to patiently kneading the dough until its correct consistency.
“You said you would buy us a treat!” Another voice spoke up from the dirt street beyond the shop. You looked up again, noticing four pairs of shinobi sandals in front of your shop. You smiled at their banter, looking back down at your work as you pushed the dough between the palms of your hand. You added more water to the mixture.
“Fine, fine,” you heard an adult voice concede, a heavy sigh in the wake of his response. “This is what you want?”
“Yes!” Two voices said in unison.
One pair of sandals turned, pulling back the cloth veil that separated the outside world from your little street shop. A bushel of silver hair emerged first, bowing his head as he entered.
Shinobi. You stood up straight, smiling as three children followed closely behind him, nipping at his heels.
"Welcome," you greeted them warmly. You slapped the ball of dough back on the wooden board, placing your hand on your hip.
"Hello," the man said, looking up at you for the first time. Your eyes met his single dark gaze and you felt your back flush, spreading to the backs of your ears like wildfire.
Kakashi of the Sharingan.
Your eyes remained locked for a beat, the commotion of the children seating themselves a distant noise between the two of you. You had heard of him, of course. Even civilians in the village had heard of such a legendary shinobi. But you had never seen him in person, let alone this close.
He was much taller - and more handsome despite three quarters of his face being covered - than the rumors had said.
Finally you blinked, looking away and greeting the children.
"We heard your shop is the best Dango shop in the village! Better than old man Chiri's down the street!" the yellow haired child said, his enthusiasm contagious. The pink haired girl grinned, following the lead of her sensei to sit at the counter.
You flushed, scratching the back of your head as you grinned.
"Thank you - but I'm sure that isn't entirely true. All dango is delicious. I'm glad to have you all here though!" You looked between the group, assessing them all. "So - what'll it be?"
"Matcha flavored!" the yellow haired one exclaimed, practically crawling onto the counter. He picked up a pair of chopsticks, eager to touch anything in his site.
"Red Bean Paste, please," the pink haired girl replied calmly, her cheeks rosy from the heat of the day.
"Kibi Dango," a brooding voice from the end replied, his shoulders hunched over the countertop. You wrote their orders down, lifting your head to Kakashi, your pen poised for his order.
"And you?"
"I am good, thank you," He waved a kind, dismissive hand. "Not much of a sweets man."
"No worries," you smiled to him. He smiled in return. You began preparing the ingredients, plopping them neatly on a plate and distributing them to each customer.
"Wow!" the yellow haired boy exclaimed, "this is even better looking then Old Man Chiri's too!"
"I'm sure his is just an older recipe," you reminded him, returning to your dough kneading. "Everyone makes dango differently. Just because his may not look good doesn't mean it won't taste good!"
"She's right, Naruto. Respect your elders," the sensei corrected him.
"I'm just speaking the truth!"
"You don't have to say everything that comes to your mind out loud," Kakashi reminded him, peering over at him irritably.
"Delicious," the pink haired girl hummed, her mouth filled with the dessert.
"Thank you," You smiled happily, your lips pressed together.
"Whicha makin' back there, anyway?" The one named Naruto asked, his mouth filled with dessert. A piece of dango fell from his lips.
"Close your mouth when you eat, idiot," the dark haired boy leaned over the counter, irritated. Naruto flushed, his eyebrows knitting together as he swallowed the dessert whole.
"More dango," you told them, lifting the ball of dough.
"Obviously," the dark haired one said again.
Naruto growled, kneeling on his stool and gritting his teeth as he stared at the other boy.
"No fighting you two!" Kakashi huffed, pulling Naruto's jacket back into his chair.
"Why does Sasuke have to be so rude all the time?"
"He's not being rude, you're being rude!" the pink haired girl defended.
"Keep out of this, Sakura!"
The sensei sighed heavily, placing his chin in his palm and looking up at you - begging for sympathy.
"See what I have to deal with?" He said, his eyebrows lifted.
"I'm sure it's not all that bad," you replied fondly, cutting off the piece of dough with your hands and rolling it into a ball.
"If my hair wasn't already grey, it would be grey by now with these three," he continued to watch you, a self deprecating chuckle coming from behind his mask. You laughed as well.
"The grey suits you as a sensei," you teased, glancing up, "very distinguished."
"Distinguished?" Naruto scoffed, already standing up to exit the shop.
"Ha!" the pink haired girl followed, Sasuke close in her wake.
"No respect," the silver haired shinobi shook his head, shoving his hand in his pocket. He sectioned out his change in his palm and placed it on the counter. You noticed the hefty tip.
"Thank you," you smiled, rolling another dough ball. "And good luck!"
He laughed, looking up and catching your eye again, "thanks. I'm going to need it."
***
One Week Later
Sweaty and tired, the three children and their sensei walked through your shop door, shuffling their feet as they sat down at the counter.
"Oh," you smiled happily, pleasantly surprised. "Back again?"
"They haven't stopped talking about your dango since we left the last time," their master responded, amused as his students shoulders slumped from a hard days work.
"Boy, you wore them out today, huh?" you noted, watching the trio staring into space.
"They'll get used to it," Kakashi said, ruffling Naruto's blond hair. The boy swatted him away.
You watched as he pulled a familiar book out of his back pocket, slipping his thumb through an indented page. You started rolling another row of dango balls.
“Icha-Icha fan?” You asked, pushing your hair from your eyes with the back of your coated hand. Flour dusted your face and your hair stuck to your forehead like glue. One onyx eye raised to meet yours, wide with curiosity and surprise.
“I am,” he closed his book, amused as he leaned over the counter. “You're familiar?"
“I’ve got the whole series in hardcover and paperback,” you replied pridefully. You never had anyone to talk about books with and you were pleased to have a fellow literature lover in the shop. He adjusted himself to face you.
“I also have the author's commentary of Volume I as well."
“Commentary, huh?” You could tell he was barely containing his astonishment. His eye glistened.
“It’s quite good. It really ties together some of the underlying themes of the series. The drama and romance is unparalleled to anything I've read before. I could let you borrow it, if you’d like.”
The young girl beside him looked over at Sasuke, her green eyes wide as she stifled a giggle. The boy ignored her, placing his cheek in on the base of his palm and huffing as he turned away. The sensei ignored them both, his eyes fixed on you, his jaw taunt.
“That would be wonderful,” he finally responded with a grin. Your heart sped up, your pulse quickening under your perspiring skin. It suddenly felt hotter than usual in the room, despite the cooler spring temperatures just outside the threshold of your shop.
You hadn’t realized you had stopped rolling the dough balls, the one ball that was in your hand melting under the heat radiating from your palm. You felt yourself flush under his gaze. You looked back down at your work, severing the connection.
“What was your name, by the way?” The sensei asked, trying desperately to compose himself as Naruto lifted his head, observing the now obvious tense interaction between the two of you.
"Can I just have some food, please?" the boy complained loudly.
You looked up, sweating profusely from the short interaction. You glanced over at the sensei, unsure if your mind was exaggerating the interaction in your head. He straightened his back, rolling his shoulders as he cleared his throat uncomfortably.
"[y/n]," You answered, your eyes connecting again with his, "And I'll have that food coming right up, kids."
***
The trio continued to come in each week with their sensei. Every Monday well into the summer months, they would arrive disheveled and defeated, their faces covered with sweat and grime. Their master always sat in the middle, each week growing more and more attentive, it seemed.
"The same, please," he would order for them, their foreheads all placed tiredly on the counter.
Carefully, you arranged the dango on plates and passed them to each of them. One by one, they lifted their heads from between their arms and began eating.
You watched as Kakashi began to lift Volume II from his back pocket, perching it between his fingers as the trio began to eat next to him quietly. Before he could crack it open, you placed a plate in front of him.
"What's this?" He asked, a confused smile behind his mask.
"A new recipe," you replied, "It's made with a soy glaze. It's more savory then sweet. You said you didn't like sweet. I mean - I have been working on it for awhile. I didn't just make it fo- ... Maybe you could be my tester before I put it on the menu?"
He looked up at you, barely hiding a pleased smile as you stopped the string of words coming uncontrollably from behind your lips.
“Thank you,” he nodded, looking down at his plate. He placed his book back in his pocket. “This looks tasty."
"I hope you like it," you offered, feeling a familiar blush creep up your cheeks. "It's on the house."
"I'm sure I will," he winked.
***
The last week of summer was quickly approaching. The heat bearing down on Konoha more than it ever had before. Your dango shop felt like a sweat shop rather than a sweets shop.
"Ohhh, [y/n]!" You heard Naruto call out from beyond the curtain of your shop. "Where's my dangoooo?"
"Right hereeee," you called back to him.
Your relationship with the group had grown since the spring. You saw them every week, sometimes twice a week if you were lucky. You learned Sakura's favorite food was syrup covered dumplings, and Sasuke, who didn't speak much, loved rice balls. You experimented with the trio, always asking for their feedback on new desserts and treats. They always loved them. Especially Naruto.
"Oh!" you had exclaimed one afternoon, your eyes landing on Kakashi. "I have something for you."
"Oh, another treat?" he asked expectantly, his eyebrow lifted as he uncrossed his legs and faced you.
"I guess you could say that," you patted your dusty hands on your apron, retreating to the back.
"Man, Kakashi-sensei always gets the good stuff!" Naruto whined.
"You just had free dango last week," you heard Sasuke remind him.
"Yeah, but-"
You returned from the back, a beaten up book in your hand. With a smile, you passed it over the counter to Kakashi. He looked down at it, his eyes suddenly bright.
"The Icha-Icha authors commentary," you explained, returning to your dough rolling. "We spoke about it the first time we-"
"Yes, I remember," He looked back up at you, his crows-feet prominent as he smiled. He began inspecting it. "Jeez, It's almost as beaten up as my novels are. The spine is coming apart from the pages."
"Oh, hush," you waved a hand, "I better get that back when you're done! I don't want to have to hunt you down for it, Hatake," you pointed a knowing finger at him.
Kakashi laughed, ignoring Naruto as he peered over at the contents of the book. The young boys cheeks flushed as his eyes skimmed the page.
"You will," he chuckled, "don't worry."
You glanced back up at him, a soft affectionate gaze catching your eye. You averted your eyes.
***
The crisp chill of fall nipped at your cheeks as you finished closing up the shop. You tightened the scarf around your neck, pulling down the curtain in front of the storefront.
It has been a long day, your knees aching from standing for well over twelve hours. You sighed heavily, bending your spine in an effort to relieve the tension.
"Hey," you heard behind you. Turning around, Kakashi stood nearby, a smile behind his mask as he greeted you with a wave.
"Oh, hello," you smiled, brushing the hair that swept in front of your eyes from the wind. "It's not Monday."
He laughed, his eyes looking at you fondly, "I know."
"Come from some soy glazed dango?" you asked, chuckling.
"No. Not quite," he smiled, kicking a rock with the tip of his sandal.
"How about returning my book?" You needled him fondly. You relished in how easy it had become to banter with him.
"Actually," He paused, pulling your book from his back pocket, "Yes."
You smiled, taking it out of his hand. You noticed the spine was reconnected to its pages. The front cover had been cleaned off.
"I glued it with fabric glue the best I could," He offered modestly. You looked up with the book in your hands and smiled.
"Thank you," you replied, "You didn't have to do that."
He shrugged coyly, "I wanted to."
Slipping the book under your arm, you turned and stood on your toes to reach the "open" sign of your shop. Above you, you saw an arm reach over your head, flipping it to "closed" for you.
You turned back around, looking up at him. You laughed, flustered. "Thank you. I've been meaning to move that sign down so I can reach it better."
"Maybe you just need to get taller," he quipped. You snorted, pushing his shoulder.
"Where are your students?" you asked, changing the subject, "Did you exhaust them again today?"
"Hmm," he replied after a moment, "No. I went fairly easy on them today."
"Are you sure about that?" you teased, looking back over at him. "Last time you said you 'went easy on them' Sakura nearly fainted. Some sensei you are."
"I'm quite sure they are fine," he laughed lightly. "But thank you for the vote of confidence."
"Anytime," you replied cheekily.
A few people walked passed your shop and you smiled at them. A few moments passed where no one said anything, the awkward silence between you both growing deafening.
"Well, is there anything I can help you with?" You asked finally, adjusting your bun uncomfortably.
"Uh," he began hesitantly, "Yes, actually."
He looked down at you, cautiously. "I was wondering if you wanted to go for a walk. Together. Just the two of us."
Your felt your breath leave your lungs, feeling a cold shock to your body as your eyes meeting his. You blinked in astonishment. He smiled reassuringly.
"I -" you began, your brain suddenly blank.
"You don't have to if you don't want to," his quickly responded, his cheeks blushing in unison with yours.
"No!" you told him quickly, your hands lifted in embarrassment. "I mean yes! I mean, of course!"
You both stared at each other, rouge painted across both of your cheeks. Finally he smiled, his eye rounded as his cheekbone lifted.
"Well then - after you," he gestured forward. You stifled a smile.
You began walking. Fall foliage skidded across the cobble stone street as you bit your lip. You saw him glance at you out of the corner of your eye. His shoulder grazed yours.
"So," he began earnestly, "Tell me about yourself..."

Day 10: Love is devotion
Rated General, Cord/Rysn, Dawnshard spoilers
Dear Akilu,
I know it's silly to write to myself as though this were a letter to you, but that's how deeply I love you. When I think of myself, I think of you, dearest Akilu, my protector.
It’s been nine times nine days since our common cause came to an end, and we decided to part ways. In the rush of relief and victory, we didn’t know how we felt about each other. You were wise to ask for this time apart.
In those days of anxiety and trouble, keeping our secret safe was our highest priority. You, Nikli, Chiri Chiri, and I were together every day through it all, and our shared secret became a shared bond. But every bond is different, as you said. In the days since our parting, I have thought of Nikli less and less, though I wish his horde every success. Not so with you, Akilu–not to say I don’t wish you success, of course! I would say I wish you the world, but we’ve already learned how much responsibility that is. No, when my thoughts turn to you, I wish you happiness, and peace, and success at every endeavour.
More to the point, I have been thinking of you–and missing you–more and more every day. Today, on this eighty-first day, I can say it with confidence. It wasn’t just our proximity that made me feel this way. I’m not alone here on the Wandersail, and many of the crew have become friends. My attendant is thoughtful and precient with his care, and I am freer than ever to pursue any adventure I’d want. I have money, and time, and good heath. I have everything–except you.
Akilu, I miss the steady pace of your footsteps just behind me. I miss the little huffs and sighs you made as you judged the people I bargained with. I miss your smile when you eat good flavourful food. I miss learning your language, and I miss teaching you mine. I miss your stories of the Peaks. I miss the way you looked at me, the way you focused like I was the only person on board.
Without this time apart, I don’t think I would have understood just how much those things mean to me. Without it, I would not have known just how much my devotion to our shared secret had overshadowed my growing devotion to you.
I'm sure you'd be delighted to learn that for those who follow the Passions, the eighty-first day is an auspicious one. Nine days times nine gathers our deepest desires and brings it back to us amplified and clear, and we may even see an omen. I haven’t always been the strongest believer but I can’t deny that I have wished for a reason to go back to you, and today there was an opportunity to go to the Horneater Peaks. I can’t help but feel that it’s a sign that–
Dear, sweet Akilu, I’m going to save this and show it to you when I see you! I can’t tell you how much your spanreed surprised me. Here I am writing in my journal about how much I want to see you, and you find me first. The second I finish writing this, I’m going to start organizing the caravan. I have to speak to the captain! She could drop me off near Vedenar.
I can’t wait to see you, Akilu. I’m brimming with joy. I am hoping with every passion in my heart that you feel the same way.

Dragging his wagon through the mesa was not fun. His arms ache and it feels like they’ll fall off any second and his legs feel like they’re slowly getting swallowed by sand. This is the moment he’s starting to regret the fact that he didn’t look for a horse before going to the mesa. He is also starting to regret choosing the mesa as his empire.
But just as he was about to continue to complain to no one about wagons, horses and red sand, something catches the wheel of the wagon and the abrupt stop trips Jimmy, face falling first into the sand. Great. Just what he needed.
Grumbling as he clumsily pushes himself to his feet, he bites his tongue to stop himself from cursing, and goes to check whatever made his day a tad worse.
There’s something jutting out underneath the first wheel to the right- the color blends well with the sand, just a little lighter, like terracotta. If it wasn’t for the odd shape of it, he would’ve passed it for a block of terracotta and ignored it. But his curiosity’s now piqued, his annoyance was shoved to the side as he pushed his wagon backwards to kneel down. Hands on the ground and sand already getting caught in his nails, he parts away the sand.
About a third of the way deep in the sand, he can make out what seems to be a statue, or at least, a part of a statue. With more enthusiasm, he digs faster and when he's sure he can finally pull the thing out easily without it gettinf broken, he gently lifts it up and examines it.
It’s an unfinished bust of a woman- her face delicately detailed with a gentle smile, her eyes looking warm despite it just being a sculpture, and her hair’s long and wavy and looks halfway finished. On top of her head is a crown, an odd one with what seems to look like corals but it still works nonetheless. It just looks like a normal statue of a woman, of a queen… if you ignore the fins where the ears should be.
Jimmy stared at it for a while, curious and intrigued.
Huh, she kinda looks like Lizzie.
…
Jimmy smiles, scoffing as he stands up and carefully places the bust in his wagon.
“What a silly thought.”

Chiri’s Fic Updates (& whatnot) for 2024!
Hi guys!
Since we are now in the thick of 2024, I thought it was time to address a few things in regard to my works - I put out… 5 different series? In 2023 and added 3 in 2024. I wanted to touch base with you all in what I currently have planned for 2024. My thoughts are kinda all over the place but I'll try to make it make sense (lol).
Planned fics
'My Wife in IT' - The sequel to 'The Girl in IT' is set to start shortly after we conclude 'The Girl in IT'. It's inevitable that Joel and Sugar are to be married - it's listed (kinda) in Joel's list, and I thought it would be a good idea for Sugar to have a list of her own! I'm really excited to start planning it - I'm wondering if I should crowdsource Sugar's list with the readers as a thanks for all of the love and support that 'The Girl in IT' has received! I'll probably be posting a poll shortly!
'A Bounty Hunter Walks into a Cantina' (rough working title) is the Din Djarin equivalent to 'The Girl in IT' with a "Mr. & Mrs. Smith' twist - it's very early in development and I am debating if I should make it a Modern Din story over a Star Wars universe one.
Current Fics & Series
'The Girl in IT' - I am floored at the response that this little series got! I am 100% committed to see it through and finish. I have a rough timeline and chapter list - no more than 10 chapters (9 main chapters and 1 epilogue/teaser).
'Meet Me at the Farmers Market' - I think that I will still continue the series but it won't be updated as frequently. I had intended the series to only run for the holidays, so I tried to give Joel and Sunflower a resolution / happy ending before the year ended. I still have a few ficlets that I want to post to supplement the series - and will try to post them in the coming weeks.
'Call it Karma, Call it Fate' - Should be completed by the end of January.
On Hiatus (or slated to be canceled)
First and foremost, I have decided to put my earlier works - ‘Our Violent Hearts’ (Joel), and ‘The *** Diaries’ on indefinite hiatus. Honestly, if I could eradicate OVH from existence I would, only because I feel like my writing has gotten better and OVH was written and planned so poorly that I want to get rid of it, so if you notice it gone from my masterlist, this is why. Honestly, I had good intentions when I conceptualized it but my heart is just not in it to finish.
With ‘The *** Diaries’, I wanted to try something different, but it ended up being more work than what I was willing to put out, so for now, I have no intention to move forward with it.
‘The Impossible Man’ (Din) is on hiatus, but with one more chapter to go, I might just bite the bullet and finish it, but only when I have some time to do so. I hope to get it done by the end of the first quarter.
'A Woman Under The Influence' will also be going on a small hiatus - I love the concept of the story but didn't realize how daunting it is to write a story set in the Star Wars universe. There is a lot of research and planning that goes with it, and it can be quite overwhelming.

Nadeko Sengoku and puns
i thought i would write about some wordplay on here to take my mind off things. i think some of this stuff is common sense but there’s also more double-meanings you might not find reading subtitles or translator’s notes alone.
please note that i am not fluent in japanese! if this post is missing anything or if i’m wrong about something, definitely let me know!
i chose to write about Nadeko because she’s the most punny character that comes to mind. of course most of them have something punny going on, but Nadeko’s name itself is a double pun, and so is Otorimonogatari as a title. i also want to talk about the Renai Circulation lyrics.
first things first, Nadeko’s full name is spelled as follows: 千石 Sengoku (surname) 撫子 Nadeko (first name)
literal readings of the writing for Nadeko 撫子 include “dianthus girl” or “caressable child”. 撫 means dianthus (a type of flower, the traditional japanese one is pink and is called dianthus superbus) and 撫でる, a verb, means “to stroke, to caress”. most japanese first names ending in -ko use the 子 kanji (”girl, child”) as a suffix, which denotes that they are feminine.
together, the two kanji 撫子 can be read as “Nadeko”, but the most common reading is “Nadeshiko”. Nadeshiko is a first name as well but it is also synonymous with Yamato Nadeshiko, the “ideal woman” archetype in japan : soft, graceful, humble, good-natured, faithful, etc. in Renai Circulation, some of the puns make reference to the Yamato Nadeshiko archetype (keep reading for direct quotes).
the surname Sengoku 千石 means “a thousand stones”. a lot of people have noticed this but Sengoku is pronounced the exact same as the name of the japanese period of continuous civil war that eventually led to the unification of japan and put an end to the feudal system. it is written differently though, Sengoku 戦国 (war + country), so i don’t know how relevant this one is (i can’t remember but this could’ve been mentioned once or twice in canon?)
now, onto Renai Circulation, because there’s one particular verse i really like:
Senri no michi mo ippo kara! (Even a lengthy journey begins with a single step!) Ishi no you ni katai sonna ishi de (With this determination, hard as a stone) Chiri mo tsumoreba Yamato Nadeshiko? (If dust is piled up, then Yamato Nadeshiko?) "Shi" nuki de (Without the “shi”) Iya shinukide! (No, I’ll go all out!)
i roughly translated it line by line above but as you can tell, it is incomprehensible in english since none of the puns hold up.
i’ll break this down further with more thorough translations :
Senri no michi mo ippo kara!  (Even a lengthy journey begins with a single step!)
“senri” (”long distance, lengthy”) means “a thousand ri”, with ri being a japanese unit of measurement. think of it as if in english “thousand mile-long” was a phrase commonly used as a euphemism to describe something that goes on for a great distance. the use of the word “senri” is interesting because the “sen” 千 in senri 千里 is the same as the one in Sengoku 千石 (”a thousand stones”).
Ishi no you ni katai sonna ishi de (With this determination, hard as a stone)
in japanese, the words “determination, will, volition” 意志 and “stone” 石 are pronounced the same, ishi, but written differently. the character for stone 石 can be read ishi like it is here, but also koku, like in the surname Sengoku 千石 (koku turns into -goku because it forms a liaison with the previous syllable)
Chiri mo tsumoreba Yamato Nadeshiko? (If dust is piled up, then Yamato Nadeshiko?)
this one makes no sense in english but it is the punniest line out of the whole verse!!! i love it. there’s a proverb in japanese that goes, Even dust, when piled up, turns into a mountain. it’s basically the “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow” of japanese, “small yet repeated efforts lead to great achievements”.
in romaji, the proverb goes “Chiri mo tsureba yama to naru”. compare with the above, “Chiri mo tsureba Yamato Nadeshiko”. the “yama to naru” (which means “to turn into a mountain”) is replaced with Yamato Nadeshiko. (in the official lyrics, the japanese line is written in full hiragana)
"Shi" nuki de (Without the “shi”) Iya shinukide! (No, I’ll go all out!)
in reference to the previous line: without the “shi”, “Yamato Nadeshiko” becomes “Yamato Nadeko”.
a literal reading of “shinukide!” 死ぬ気で (from the last line) would be, “with the feeling like one is dying”. as a common saying, it means “to go all out”, “to desperately give it one’s all”, “to go at it like hell”, etc. the pun here is pretty straightforward : “Shi” nuki de and shinukide are pronounced the same.
that’s it for the Renai Circulation verse!
now onto Otorimonogatari! Otorimonogatari 囮物語 is the first Monogatari arc narrated by Nadeko. it means “lure tale” or “decoy story”.
if you compare the writing for Otorimonogatari and the writing for Bakemonogatari, a first pun emerges :
Bakemonogatari  化物語 Otorimonogatari  囮物語
the “otori” kanji is the same as the “bake” kanji, it’s only difference being as if written inside a mouth 口 kanji (which makes sense for a “lure” kanji if you think about it).  化 + 口 = 囮 (as a side note, Hanamonogatari 花物語 uses the same formula, the kanji for “hana” 花 (flower) is the same as “bake” 化, only with a grass radical over it)
this is pretty neat on its own, but we can go further with the mouth 口 kanji. the writing for “snake” (hebi) in japanese is 蛇. in Otorimonogatari, Mr. Serpent, aka Kuchinawa-san in japanese, is introduced. “serpent” is a great localization for “Kuchinawa”, because kuchinawa is actually a more archaic reading of the 蛇 (snake) kanji mentioned previously. this reading comes from the writing 朽ち縄 kuchinawa “rotten rope”, but kuchinawa can also be written “rope with a mouth” 口縄. it seems like “rotten rope” was more common, but for the sake of the pun i really like the mouth thing. it circles back to otori 囮.
in the novel, Kuchinawa is written using katakana クチナワ (ku-chi-na-wa), and in the anime his giant form has 蛇 ideograms floating around inside him, so i would say this one isn’t necessarily intentional.
welp that’s it! thanks for reading!!!!

I am mostly sfw and write death, trauma, loss, tragedy, mental illness, suicide, afterlife, blood, body horror and other similar dark topics, so just be aware of that. Tropes you will never find in my writing include none come to mind, honestly.
In my humble opinion, my best work I've posted is Humanity's Demon because Demonic will forever have my heart and the inspiration I had for writing that story was so silly and random and fun.
Something I'd love for you to know about my writing that isn't listed in this game is I haven't been writing as much lately and have been gaming or focusing on other creative projects but I hope to return to it soon. I get tons of ideas constantly, so don't get too attached to an idea and the idea of getting to see it to its end, even if I seem to throw everything into it.
Thank you for reading and now I challenge the following people to fill this out: @lordkingsmith, @perasperaadastrawriting, @jade-island-lives, @ren-c-leyn, @incandescent-creativity, @the-writers-bookshelf, @deniselavestal (if you want).
