At 2-3 times larger than red and gray squirrels, the fox squirrel is the largest species of tree squirrel native to North America. So named for it’s long bushy tail which can be up to 15 inches long, the fox squirrel has at least 3 distinct color morphs and 10 subspecies. It is not as strong a climber as the smaller, more aggressive gray squirrel, and tends to spend more time on the ground.

Some subspecies of fox squirrel are threatened due to hunting and habitat loss. The Delmarva Fox Squirrel in particular was once widespread across the whole Delmarva Peninsula and ranged as far north as New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It was placed on the endangered species list in 1967 after it was found to exist in only 10% of it’s historical range. An effort to restore habitat on public and private lands was put into effect, with Delmarva Fox Squirrels being reintroduced to at least 11 sites. Today, the Delmarva Fox Squirrel can mainly be found in protected areas like Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Because these populations appear to be stable, the Delmarva Fox Squirrel was removed from the Endangered Species List in 2015, but restoration efforts continue in other areas of the Delmarva Peninsula where the fox squirrels once lived.

Sika deer are native to East Asia. They are small and keep their spots throughout their lives. They were introduced to the eastern United States. Today, they can be found on Assateague Island, Maryland and Virginia. I found this lady in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia.

The state is located in the southeastern part of the country, and is home to the Atlantic coastline, as well as the Appalachian Mountains. Colonial Williamsburg Colonial Williamsburg is the place to be if you are interested in learning more about the early history of the United States. In addition to the history of the area, there are plenty of interactive activities for kids. Among the most interesting aspects of the colonial town is the fact that many of the buildings are on original foundations. Some are even marked by colonial flags. You can also see a replica of the Governor’s Palace, which was home to the first two elected governors of Virginia. The palace also boasted an 11-bin wine cellar and a natural park. Other points of interest include the official Episcopal church and the College of William and Mary, which is the second oldest college building in the U.S. Founded in 1715, it had students of all levels. If you’re looking for a bit more of a hands-on experience, head over to the Governor’s Palace for a cooking demonstration. You can visit the Stone House, which served as a Union field hospital during both battles. After the Visitor Center, you can head out on the First Manassas Loop Trail. There are also four illustrative working farms from the 1800s. These farmsteads represent different cultures, such as an Irish farmhouse, a West African village, and an American Indian wigwam. Not only does the museum offer fun events, like the “Curious Farm” and the 1820’s American Farm, but it also provides an interesting perspective on the history of the United States. Designed by architect Carlton Abbott, the visitors’ center features three frame gable-roofed buildings grouped around a courtyard. Other displays at the Frontier Culture Museum include a 17th century Irish Forge, an 18th century German Farm, and a West African village. Each one of these demonstrates how the settlers of America were able to combine their native culture with their European and Native American backgrounds to create a new culture. The museum also has an American Indian village, a schoolhouse from the 1800s, and a 17th century Ganatastwi Native American wigwam. Luray Caverns Luray Caverns is the largest caverns in the eastern United States, and one of the top places to visit in Virginia. This cave in the Shenandoah Valley is home to an underground lake, crystal-clear waters, a Great Stalacpipe Organ, and more. In addition, there are several other attractions on site, including a garden maze and a rope adventure course. The Luray Valley Museum is a historical museum that features pre-contact Native American artifacts and items from the mid-19th century. There are also exhibits devoted to cars, stagecoaches, buggies, and more. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of Luray Caverns, or choose to join a guided tour. You’ll find that the tours last about 45-60 minutes. It’s possible to buy tickets at the gift shop, which offers a variety of options. If you do decide to buy tickets, you’ll be able to purchase a ticket that includes admission to the Luray Valley Museum and Toy Town Junction. Other activities at Luray Caverns include gemstone mining, a Rope Adventures Course, a Garden Maze, and a Ropes Course. Shenandoah National Park Shenandoah National Park is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. This park is home to abundant wildlife, such as black bears, white-tailed deer, and many different kinds of songbirds. The park features hundreds of miles of hiking trails and campgrounds. There are also a number of great things to do in the park. One of the most popular attractions in the park is Skyline Drive, which runs along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has over 75 scenic overlooks, making it an ideal place to take in the beauty of the area. Another cool thing to do in the park is to hike on the Appalachian Trail. This trail runs through the park and has three rock scrambles. Hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the peaks. Shenandoah is also home to a number of waterfalls. Most falls occur on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. These falls are generally easier to see in the fall. If you’re looking for something more active, consider white water rafting. There are several areas in the park that are suitable for rafting. Depending on the water levels, you can choose from a variety of difficulty levels.
