'Oppenheimer closes in on another box office milestone as the critically acclaimed biographical thriller from Christopher Nolan enjoys a solid return in China.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oppenheimer climbed to $47.2 million at the Chinese box office following its second weekend in cinemas throughout the Asian nation. However, with its $9.6 million take from this past weekend, per data from Artisan Gateway, Oppenheimer failed to top the local box office, ceding the number one spot to the domestic crime thriller, Dust to Dust, which made $22.2 million during its two-day opening between Sept. 9-10.

Oppenheimer is on track to gross as much as $57 million in the Chinese market, as forecast by Chinese ticketing app, Maoyan, generating a better-than-expected return for the Universal Pictures title. With that tally, the Nolan flick will become the fourth-highest-grossing film released in China so far this year, trailing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($86.9 million), Meg 2: The Trench ($116.5 million) and Fast X ($139.5 million). Nolan actively promoted the movie in China to generate further buzz ahead of its release there.

Thanks to its performance in China and recent boosts in the United States thanks to National Cinema Day and an extended IMAX run, Oppenheimer is now closing in on another milestone as the film is nearing the $900 million mark internationally. To date, Oppenheimer has earned $891 million globally, with nearly $576 million of that tally coming overseas since its shared release on Jul. 21 with Barbie. Thanks to Oppenheimer and Barbie, Hollywood has enjoyed its best domestic revenue in the post-pandemic era, crossing the $4 billion mark.

Oppenheimer Continues to Smash Records

Oppenheimer is the second-biggest moneymaker among R-rated films ever, only trailing Joker ($1.066 billion), and is the highest-earning biopic since 2018's Bohemian Rhapsody ($910.8 million), the movie chronicling the life of Freddie Mercury and his band, Queen. The flick is centered around titular theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and his role in the Manhattan Project, the initiative that birthed the world's first atomic bomb.

Also starring Robert Downey Jr. (Lewis Strauss), Emily Blunt (Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer), Florence Pugh (Jean Tatlock) and Matt Damon (Leslie Groves), Oppenheimer has been regarded as Nolan's "magnum opus" by Murphy and is one of the British filmmaker's best-received movies of his distinguished career. There is no word yet on when Oppenheimer will be available for streaming or home video.'

Hello Hello Hello :),

After we went to China together we will be going back to the roots to be exact back to France for the following months. My favorite types of buildings inspire my newest Set: French Chateaus, therefore it's only natural to call this newest Collection CHATEAU

Basics first!: It always helps me to set the mood and style by creating the build items first; a Chateau needs loads of them. This month I focused on windows and doors, almost all of these items have open versions for versatility. The windows and doors can be decorated with separate frames in two different styles. Other architectural items are dormer windows ( which light up at night), coins, brick/ stone walls, and matching foundations, In total 58 items :)

Just as a side note, while I was building for the promo shot I realized that the new items go very well with the Grove, Berlin, and of course the Paris Set.

Trees in Buddhism (3)

Sal tree (Shorea robusta) – the Nirvana

In Buddhism, there is an important day called 'Sanbutsuki (3 anniversaries of the Buddha)', which commemorates three major milestones in the Buddha's life.

These are Buddhist rituals of the Nativity on 8 April, when Buddha was born, the Jodo-e (becoming a Buddha) on 8 December, when he attained enlightenment, and the Nirvana on 15 February, when he passed away.

The Buddha's death is believed to have occurred on 15 February of the lunisolar calendar in China and Japan, and in many places it is now held on 15 March.

According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha was lying between a pair of sal trees when he died:

Then the Blessed One with a large community of monks went to the far shore of the Hiraññavati River and headed for Upavattana, the Mallans' sal-grove near Kusinara. On arrival, he said to Ananda (Ref1), the chosen disciple, "Ananda, please prepare a bed for me between the twin sal-trees, with its head to the north. I am tired, and will lie down. (DN16; Nirvana Sutra)"

When the Buddha died in Kusinara, there were 4 or 8 sal trees on the 4 corners of his bed. They were said to have bloomed at the same time, then quickly withered and turned white, just like a flock of cranes.

In Buddhism, the brief flowering of the sal tree is used as a symbol of impermanence and the rapid passing of glory. The sal tree is also said to have been the tree under which Kondana and Vessabhu, respectively the fifth and twenty fourth Buddhas preceding Gautama Buddha, attained enlightenment.

The sal tree (shorea robusta, sāla, shala, sakhua, or sarai), is a species of tree in the family Dipterocarpaceae. The tree is native to India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tibet and across the Himalayan regions.

The sal tree is mythologically classified as a 'tree of life', symbolising resurrection, rebirth and rejuvenation, but in Buddhism it is one of the three most sacred trees, symbolising parinirvana, as the Buddha died under two sal trees in a row.

The three most sacred Buddhist trees are:

Ashoka tree: the tree where the Buddha was born (Ref).

Bodhi tree: the tree where the Buddha attained enlightenment

Sal tree: the tree where the Buddha died.

沙羅双樹 (ｻﾗｿｳｼﾞｭ) 〜涅槃会 (ねはんえ)

仏教には、ゴータマ・ブッダの生涯における3つの大きな節目を記念する「三仏忌 (さんぶつき)」という大切な日がある。

それが、ブッダが生まれた4月8日の降誕会 (こうたんえ)、悟りを開いた12月8日の成道会(じょうどうえ)、そして入滅した2月15日の｢涅槃会(ねはんえ)｣。

ブッダの入滅は中国や日本では旧暦2月15日とされ、現在は3月15日に行なわれているところが少なくない。

また、仏教の伝統によると、ブッダは入滅したとき、一���の沙羅双樹 (ｻﾗｿｳｼﾞｭ) の間に横たわっていた。

その後、大勢の僧侶たちの中から選ばれたアーナンダ（参照1）はヒラニャーヴァティ川の向こう岸に行き、クシナラ近くのマッラ族の沙羅樹の林、ウパヴァッタナへ向かった。到着すると、ブッダはアーナンダに言った。「アーナンダ、2対の沙羅双樹 (ｻﾗｿｳｼﾞｭ) の間に、頭を北に向けた寝床を用意してください。私は疲れているので、横になります。(DN16; 大般���槃経)」

ブッダがクシナガラで死去したとき、臥床の四辺に4双8本の沙羅双樹 (ｻﾗｿｳｼﾞｭ)があった。時じくの花を咲かせ、たちまちに枯れ、白色に変じ、さながら鶴の群れのごとくであったという。

仏教では、沙羅双樹 (ｻﾗｿｳｼﾞｭ)の木の短い花は、無常と栄光の急速な通過の象徴として使用されることもある。また、沙羅双樹 (ｻﾗｿｳｼﾞｭ) は、ゴータマ・ブッダに先立つ5番目の仏陀であるコーナニャーと24番目の仏陀であるヴェッサブーが悟りを開いた木であると言われている。

沙羅双樹 (ｻﾗｿｳｼﾞｭ)はフタバガキ科の樹木の一種で、インド、バングラデシュ、ネパール、チベット、ヒマラヤ地方に自生している。

沙羅双樹 (ｻﾗｿｳｼﾞｭ)は神話学的には復活・再生・若返りの象徴である「生命の木」に分類されるが、仏教では二本並んだ沙羅の木の下で釈尊が入滅したことから般涅槃の象徴とされ、仏教三大聖樹のひとつである:

無憂樹: 釈迦が生まれた所にあった樹木（参照）

印度菩提樹：釈迦が悟りを開いた所にあった樹木

娑羅双樹：釈迦が亡くなった所にあった樹木

Buddhism Infodump Ahead😋:

OKAY SO- This all started like 2 years ago I think?? Because I was taking a Buddhism class (at this point my brain hadn’t really connected the dots yet with JTTW and the class lmao) and we were talking about Bodhisattva’s and how they’re all gender neutral (which I thought was so fucking cool). During the class, we talked about Guan Yin and finally it clicked in my brain that hey!! That’s the bodhisattva in JTTW! But I was confused because the book definitely uses she/her, when theyre supposed to be gender neutral? I pulled my prof aside after class and asked why that was?

And SO- the Guan Yin that appears in the book is a specific version from the school of Chan(Zen) Buddhism, which focuses more on meditation as a path to enlightenment. This kind of mediation can be done while going about daily life performing chores. As you meditate, you can be spontaneously enlightened, either triggered by a sound or change in your environment. This school has special versions of the Buddhas and Bodhisattva’s, like Rope Robed Monju and White Robed Guan Yin, who is (usually) depicted relaxing in their home (a bamboo grove said to be at Mt.Putuo) by a reflecting pool. When Christians started coming to China to convert people to Christianity, they saw this super popular version of Guan Yin ((which people at time were depicting as more feminine)(as bodhisattva’s can take any form they want)) and immediately equated them to Mother Mary. The white clothes, feminine appearance, and occasional depiction with children convinced Christians that they were worshiping Mary. Thanks to conversion efforts (and China not wanting to be attacked by Europe for denouncing ‘their God’), Guan Yin as a woman was cemented into the general population. So by the time JTTW was written, Guan Yin was portrayed as a woman! They also spread the idea that Buddhism ISNT a religion but a philosophy! Because then you can worship the Christian god and not yours, because yours is just a way of life not an actual religion! I’ve had ALOT of people tell me Buddhism is a philosophy and it activates my anger every time(These conversion efforts also resulted in a lot of Non-Asain countries having the the wrong idea of Buddhism since the missionaries brought back this warped version to Europe, ideas that still persist today).

Other Funfacts:

One iconographic detail that can help you identify Guan Yin, is that Amitabha is always sitting in their crown (not sure if this applies to avaloteshkovara tho), which also links them to Pureland Buddhism, as Amitabha is the Buddha of the Pureland and infinite light and life😌 (the western heaven in JTTW for context).

While Bodhisattva’s are not gendered, Buddha’s are! Which is probably related to the fact that Buddhas don’t really change their appearances like the Bodhisattva’s do, since they don’t usually interact with humans

Guan Yin is also known as Kannon(Japan), Gwan-uem(Korea), and Avaloteshkovara(India)

Amida (Japans name for Amitabha) also performs the Raigo or welcoming descent and can be accompanied by Kannon and Seishi to take people to the Pureland as they’re dying. This is where they will spend their next life, listening to lectures by Amida, as they try to reach enlightenment

Nirvana literally means extinction, it means removing your self from the cycle of reincarnation and finally resting

When you are enlightened, you become one with everything, including other Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

There are over 80 signs of enlightenment including the urna, ushnisha, and elongated earlobes. The earlobes are from the historical Buddha Siddhartha, who as an Indian prince, would have stretched lobes for Jewelry

You can also ID a specific Buddha by the combination of Mudras they are displaying- Abhaya and Varada are specifically for Shakyamuni (the historical Buddha). Amitabha with the Samahita Mudra (I’m having trouble finding its name, so I’m not 100% sure it’s right)

Two of the Bigger Branches of Buddhism are Mahayan Buddhism(which is more popular in North Asia) and Theravada Buddhism (which is more popular in South Asia)

In esoteric Buddhism, the more heads and arms a deity has, the more powerful they were, see 11 Headed Guan Yin

TO CONCLUDE ALL THESE FUN LITTLE FACTS: Buddhism is a religion and is different in every country it’s practiced in, JTTW showing just a small snippet!
