Look who just woke up- is that SOFIA PERNAS? No, I must have been mistaken, that’s AURELIA GUNNER from THE HUNGER GAMES (oc, d2). I heard she is 30 and stuck here just like everyone else. Even in the 20’s, they still give off a HAUNTED BY HER SECRETS, CHOOSING THE WRONG SIDE, WILLING TO DO ANYTHING FOR FAMILY impression. They’re known to be quite DEVOTED, but have a tendency to be COWARDLY on their bad days.

Aurelia has had one thing drilled into her since birth; Family was everything. They were all they could trust, all she could believe in, and it was her job to do anything she could to make their lives better. She was born the eldest of eventually three children, a younger sister and the youngest being her brother. They were her entire world, and Aurelia adored them both. Growing up they were all inseparable, especially so when their parents got sick and died when she was sixteen. Aurelia had been taught a lot of their knowledge of healing, their parents knowing enough to be helpful in the community but not actual doctors. But nothing seemed to stop their illness, Aurelia promising to protect and look after her siblings at all costs.

It was a promise that stayed with her the rest of her life, going from child to older than her years the moment she became the sole caretaker of her siblings. Thankfully they were able to take up their parents old practice, teaching the other two how to heal and patch up wounds. Things were going fine, not having too much trouble but things weren’t safe in Panem by far. They were robbed a few times, or people would demand their services for free, and Aurelia always delivered, knowing that to refuse would mean beatings or death for her and her family. She’d rather go hungry than see them hurt.

She should’ve known trouble had come to her door when a bloody boy stumbled in late one night, took one look at her baby brother and told him he was beautiful. Aurelia thought it ridiculous, and thought little of him until she noticed the theft and demands stopped after he was restored to health. And little Lori wasn’t so little anymore, taking a liking to the abrasive man even if Aurelia quietly disapproved. But as long as Lori was happy she didn’t say a word, too busy trying to keep them fed and stocked for anything.

As her siblings grew older and more independent, Aurelia started taking longer visits to the market, and interacting more with the others her age. The rumors of rebellion were just that; foolish rumors, and she honestly thought nothing would come of it. The Capitol did what they could to take care of them all, and she was grateful for what protection they were able to provide at all. It was opinions like this that won her the favor of one of the officials from the Capitol, her beauty drawing his attention and her Capitol minded-opinions making her unique. Most of the others she knew in the District thought her foolish, but she wasn’t bold in her thoughts and not a lot of people knew where her allegiances lie. Her opinions grew even quieter when she returned home one afternoon to find Lori’s tough boy had brought home more tough looking young men. Ryker and his brother Ajax were definitely capable looking, and when she was informed in quiet tones by the others that they were with the Rebellion she realized this was something that was actually happening. War was on their doorstep, and she had let in the wrong side.

The next three years proved to be the hardest of her life, the rebellion ramping up into full swing and Aurelia finding that injured rebels were being brought to her doorstep. Her siblings had obviously chosen side, Lori and his two rebel loves integrated and close with the family now, and she didn’t know how to feel. They were all so hopeful, thinking things would change and the rebellion would be successful, but Aurelia never doubted they would fail. The Capitol had always held strong, and she worried what that would mean when the Rebellion fell. Would they be punished for helping the rebels, or even being close to them? Aurelia stressed about the millions of outcomes and what ifs for years, not knowing how to protect her family from the consequences of their side, and that stress only grew as the rebellion began to fall apart.

Aurelia’s stresses were relieved when she was out for a walk and found herself approached by her same official approached her in a side street, informing her the war was nearly over and the Rebellion all but crushed. When she asked what would happen to the rebels, his answer frightened her even more, telling her just that all the rebels and any that helped them would be hunted down and punished to be made an example of. Aurelia didn’t know what that meant for sure, but she knew she couldn’t protect her family on her own, so when he suggested that anyone who had information on the rebels would be rewarded, she didn’t hesitate to offer her help. Her brother and sister were all that mattered, and that was all she asked for. Their lives, and peace for them all if they could be left alone. She trusted this man, the official giving her a warm smile and an easy agreement, and she then proceeded to make the worst mistake of her life.

Aurelia gave him three names. Ryker Harlow. Ajax Harlow. And Elias Stone.

Those names were enough for him to promise protection when the Capitol came for it’s vengeance, and as he disappeared into the darkness again Aurelia could finally breathe for the first time in years. Her family would be alright, they would be safe. What she never would have predicted was what came next, the Rebellion having lost and the Capitol announcing it’s vengeance. The Hunger Games. Nor did she expect the ruin that would follow, the Peacekeepers taking Ryker off as the tribute to the games, leaving Lori absolutely devastated. Aurelia hated herself for how sad he was, and the wounds on his Elias from fighting to save Ryker from his fate. She reassured herself that at least Lori had Elias. He hadn’t lost both of them.

Until she woke up the next day to find he’d gone off to try and rescue Ryker from the arena itself. Aurelia knew immediately he wouldn’t return, stricken as Lori told her with hope in his voice. Hope his loves would live. And all she could do was stand there knowing she had done this to him. Death had come to their doorstep because of her. But at least he was alive. They were all alive. That’s what she told herself as she watched her brother’s hope die and the crushing sorrow that followed. Saw how Ryker’s death affected his brother, and saw how all this darkness and sadness affected her sister as well. Felt the weight of her own guilt crush her spirit and knew her family likely thought she was unable to sleep because of their losses, not because she was kept up thinking about how it was her fault.

The only time she held any fight was when the second Hunger Games came around, and this time the Peacekeepers were on her doorstep for her sister. Aurelia begged for them to spare her, promised them anything but they took her with nothing she could do to stop it. Aurelia ran to the government buildings immediately, going to the office of the now mayor of her District. The man who had promised her family safety. The man who now told her that she was worthless if she had no more knowledge, nothing to trade that would save her sister. She cried out her anguish, but no amount of begging was enough. She left the confrontation with bruised ribs and a lashing in punishment, finally failing in the one thing she’d been supposed to do. Keep them safe. Keep them whole.

She’d ruined their lives and all she had left in her heart was secrets and regrets.

The Kings of Paradise Guys as Dads! (FLUFF) [KOP-headcanon]

Based on Anonymous request: Whenever you have time, could you do the KOP guys as fathers/or when the MC is pregnant?

I decided to combine both these scenarios and write this headcanon, albeit a bit lengthy and kinda detailed. I've written this with the basic idea of the guys having a daughter, because it really appealed to me. Hope you like it!❤

Taki:

When MC first told him about the pregnancy, he had been over the moon. He had dreamt of having a family with her ever since high school. He hugged her tight and the first words out of his mouth were "Thank you MC, I love you so much, I can't even express how happy I am". And he sounded choked.

He started reading a lot. If not working or pampering MC, he would read various Internet articles regarding pregnancy.

He pampered MC much much more than usual. From bringing her mindful gifts to giving her a fragrant bath or a back massage, he would go that extra mile to make sure she was happy and comfortable. It was almost daily that he brought little gifts for MC when he came home from work, much to her chagrin.

Taki is incredibly mature and that showed in his ability to handle any situation- from MC's mood swings to her cravings.

On those nights when the baby would be extra kicky and render MC sleepless, he would sing to MC's belly and rub it to soothe the baby. It was the most tender version of Taki MC had ever seen.

He had kept all the funds that they would ever require for the baby ready beforehand. He has also secretly kept money in various bank accounts for MC. Not that he'd ever mention this to her because she tends to worry, but this is his precaution to ensure that MC has enough to provide for herself and their baby god forbid something horrible ever happened to him. His biggest fear is not being able to take care of his family and watching them suffer in dangerous situations like he did when young, so he has taken every possible measure to ensure that nothing would ever separate him from them.

He has the best health insurances for himself, MC and also for their coming baby.

He has all big mergers and business deals done before the arrival of the baby so that he wouldn't miss out on the initial few years of it's life. He has everything meticulously planned, it's almost like an OCD for him.

Taki and MC decorated the nursery and baby-proofed the house together. The nursery has several momentos from their journey together from high school uptil that moment, and it is something very sentimental for both of them.

He drove MC to the hospital about 2 days prior to the due date, just to avoid any last minute stress. Whenever MC would feel stressed, he would be there to hug her and make her feel at ease.

He held her shoulders and encouraged her to push when she went into labour. It was difficult for him to see her in pain, but in order to support her, he had to remain composed.

He could barely hold his tears back when he first saw their baby daughter. Her face was more like MC, save for her eyes which were an exact copy of his. One look into her eyes, and he swore that he would do anything and everything in his power to ensure that his family would long for nothing. "MC, she's perfect" he said, looking at his wife in admiration.

The only thing MC does after coming home from the hospital is resting. Taki keeps her away from housework. He also takes care of the baby when MC is asleep. MC admonishes him at times because all that waking up late at night will definitely make him fall asleep on his desk (he did once, and he didn't tell MC this, but she knows better).

He strives to come home early so that he can play with his baby girl. MC loves to see Taki giggling and singing with the baby, and she swears she's never seen anything so adorable.

Taki is yet to get used to the diaper changing and upchucking, but he tries his best. He agrees that MC is so many times better than him at all the baby jobs.

Another reason that he comes home early is to keep the other guys away from his daughter. She doesn't need those immature problematic men with horrible gifting sense.

He's lost count of the number of times he's scolded Yosuke and the others for bringing those extravagant gifts for his daughter, but her 3 more than generous uncles refuse to listen. MC and Taki are confused as to what they are going to do with that mini-Mercedes.

Taki and MC sit together with Sydney and gently introduce her to her new baby sister. Sydney takes her role very seriously- she's even more aggressive towards Yosuke when he comes to see the baby.

Taki death-glared Shun hard when he said that he's going to be baby girl's boyfriend. His annoyance level reached maximum when his daughter giggled back in agreement. MC could barely hold back her laughter.

Taki's lockscreen is a picture of MC with their baby girl in her arms, while MC's lockscreen is a picture of a sleeping Taki with their baby girl sound asleep on his chest.

Yosuke:

Yosuke was really excited but also scared when MC told him she was pregnant. He had a less than pleasant experience with his own family, so he doubted his capabilities as a father.

Although he did not let MC in on it, he had been extremely unsure fir the first few weeks. Did he want a baby? Could he handle that responsibility? But the next moment, he thought about how enriched his life had become since MC, and another little MC wouldn't hurt at all. It was then he firmly decided, he was going to do this, by hook or by crook.

He was very excited, albeit a bit nervous about the first ultrasound. When he saw the tiny little bean- their tiny little bean on the screen, he was filled with an array of emotions all which told him that he dearly wanted this human in his life. That was the day when all of his inhibitions were put to rest.

Since the day MC revealed her pregnancy, Yosuke became extremely protective of her- he personally took care of her meals, even hired a nutritionist and a cook for her, got in the best of doctors and obstetricians and made sure he attended each gynaec visit. MC thought it was fun to see Yosuke so excited (and extra) about something.

He easily gets concerned by morning sickness and MC's mood swings. He cannot handle seeing her crying, he gets panicky and ends up doing weird things. Once when he saw MC crying watching an animal documentary, he went into a panic and came back dressed in a bunny onesie- complete with the whiskers and button nose. He was extremely embarrassed because he had no clue what to do, but that made MC smile so it was worth everything.

He's an compulsive Googler. He Googles practically everything that he is unsure about, and gets antsy when Google doesn't have an answer to his question. Honestly, the last thing he Googled was 'How to raise a baby?' If Google were a person, it would have gotten Yosuke arrested.

When the labour pains first started, he was genuinely more scared than MC herself. His hands were sweaty, and MC, through the pain, had to make sure her husband was okay. Inspite of being panicked, he refused to leave the delivery room so the doctors had to unwillingly keep him.

He watched the entire birth with fearful eyes, ready to collapse anytime with the amount of tension.

Throughout the course of her pregnancy, MC seriously wondered if Yosuke was her eldest forgotten child.

When the doctors handed him their crying daughter, there was an overflow of emotions inside him. He cried, cried a lot- his daughter, wet, kicking and wailing, was the loveliest thing he had ever seen. He couldn't believe this little one was theirs. "Thank you so much MC, I love you baby"

He made sure MC was comfortable in the hospital, and that she had her favourite foods- much to the annoyance of all doctors and nurses.

He spent the first 2 nights awake, looking at his new favourite girl. She had his exact mischievous face and eyes too, but her hair and skin colour matched MC.

SPOILER ALERT: Daddy's baby girl gets whatever she wants, and she isn't even 2 days old yet. He wants to bring her up like a princess, although MC is quite adamant that she doesn't want her daughter growing up to become a spoilt, rich brat. But Yosuke also promised her that he won't let their daughter go the wrong way, and he'll make damn sure of it.

He works from home quite often, so that he can take care of MC and play a lot with the baby. He treats both his girls with utmost care, and gives them all his attention. He does not want either of them feel what he did as a child.

Compulsive photographer. Clicks innumerable baby pictures daily, and most of them look the same, but he wouldn't delete them.

The first time his daughter threw up on him, he was like "Honey, why would you do this to me?" while MC tried hard not to laugh at the scene, making Yosuke pout. She replied, "Don't worry Yosuke, I still love you, even if you're covered in baby vomit"

Yosuke cannot see baby girl crying. The first wail itself is too much for him to take, and her tear streaked little face and desperate cries bring him to his knees.

He won't let the other guys hold her until he's made sure they've had a shower and are clean enough. He won't even let them hold her for more than a minute, and ofcourse Shun or even Taki for that matter, wouldn't listen to that which makes Yosuke really sulky.

When MC once joked about their daughter growing up and getting home a boyfriend just like Yosuke, boy he freakeddddd out. No, she's his baby girl, she doesn't need any other boy in her life except him!

Kiyohito:

When MC revealed the news to him, he teared up. He isn't really an emotional person, so seeing him react that way did worry MC a little bit. But he made it clear that he was happy and those were the happy kind of tears.

For his young age, he was a bit anxious at the aspect of fatherhood. But a mini him-&-MC? He couldn't wait to see that one!

He made sure of being not only physically, but also emotionally available for MC because it was the time for the most drastic changes for her, and he didn't want her to go through that alone. He makes it a point to be more vocal towards MC and tell her how he feels.

He also makes sure he's always there to listen to what MC has to say. He pays utmost attention to all her needs. He insists that MC speak out everything on her mind and he very religiously does the same- fears and inhibitions included. Communication is the key to a healthy pregnancy and relationship and noone knows that better than Kiyo.

He tries to be home early, but if he can't, he calls from time to time to check on MC, if she's had her meals, her vitamins and medications, if she's feeling okay and stuff like that. He has tried to attend as many check-ups as he could.

He always offers MC a soothing body massage whenever she's sore or tired.

He talks to MC's belly a lot. He'll whisper sweet things and rub it affectionately wishing that his baby recognizes him.

He's honestly scared when doctors rushed MC to the delivery room. He could not bear her screams and the nurse had to push him out.

When MC urged him to finally hold their baby girl- her stared at her long and hard, not being able to believe that she was here with them. She was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen besides MC, and she had his exact angelic eyes.

When MC is sent home, Kiyohito usually manages the night duties, and it was then that MC realised: he had a horrible singing voice- it sounded like a constipated alien. But it soothes their daughter nonetheless (that poor baby girl), so MC has never told him that it sucks.

Kiyohito designs many cute onesies, frocks and clothes of a variety of styles for his baby girl. Even at that very tender age, she has a massive closet of her own. MC and Kiyo love dressing her up. He even tries various hairstyles on her baby hair. The other guys find it really adorable and it becomes difficult for Kiyo to get her back once he gives her to them.

He just cannot stand baby poop and vomit. The first time he smelt it, he threw up, no kidding. MC has to do all the dirty work herself.

Kiyohito has hired bodyguards for MC and the baby. He strictly keeps their daughter away from paparazzi. He also keeps her away from his social media. He wants her to have a normal private life. He is also particularly hesitant about his daughter entering into the entertainment or fashion industry because of all the bad politics involved in it.

Kiyo and MC have lost track of the number of diamond studded hairclips their daughter owns, thanks to Yosuke and Shun. And thanks to Taki for getting her that crocodile plush that she really adores. She wouldn't sleep without it and Kiyo is a bit annoyed at the fact that she won't take any of the soft toys he bought for her, to sleep.

Shun:

Shun and MC had been trying for a baby since quite sometime so when MC finally gave him the big news, he was incredibly happy.

He surprisingly cut down on his drinking without being told by anyone. Yosuke teases him a lot about it.

He meticulously tries to adjust his schedule so that he returns home on time for his wife and their new member. He also attends all ultrasound sessions and birthing classes with MC.

Takes MC on a babymoon to some exotic place so that she can relax and unwind.

Is the type to get MC a lot of treats while returning home. He picks up clothes, shoes, food for MC and toys for the baby on an impulse. If he's walking on the street, and he sees something in a shop that he likes, he's sure to bring it home.

He's really romantic towards MC because for the second time in his life, she's made him feel truly alive from the inside.

He wishes that their baby is a girl, because he wants a little girl just like MC. He regularly prays to God for that.

Shun often surprises MC with a bouquet of flowers, a shower of kisses, cuddles, a candlelight dinner or a bubble bath with her favourite bath bombs.

Shun personally gets into the baby-proofing stuff. He does not want to leave any corner of the house untouched.

Just before going to sleep, Shun spends some time on self-introspection and thinks how he can be a better husband and father. Unknown to him, MC hasn't missed the changes in his behaviour and she's thankful to have him in her life.

For all the time he spent carefully managing his schedule, the baby chose to arrive at that exact moment when he wasn't home. Taki, Yosuke and Kiyohito rushed MC to the hospital for an early delivery. Shun at that time was filming the last scene for his last film of the season in another town. So when Taki could finally reach him and tell him about the news, he drove to the hospital as fast as he could. But through the traffic and distance, it took him more than an hour to come. By the time he reached, MC had already delivered their daughter and was tiredly waiting for him.

"Look at our princess Shun, exactly like the one you wanted" MC had barely said the words when he wrapped her in a tight hug and cried to his hearts content. He was happy more than words could express, but also emotional at the aspect of not being able to witness their daughter's birth.

He held his daughter in his arms all night and thanked god for granting his wish. She has taken his dark hair and lip-shape, but the rest of her looks like MC. Once they return home, he has every plan ready to spoil the two of them.

Shun likes to soothe his daughter by playing the piano. When she's fussy, she won't settle for anyone but daddy. Since he's taken a short hiatus from filming, he is almost always at home. He doesn't want to miss anymore of his daughter's milestones.

He's surprisingly a pro at changing diapers, cleaning baby vomit and handling the teething. The other guys were surprised to see him do all the work without even scrunching his nose. They think he must have some sort of superpower.

Shun thinks that the guys are a bad influence for his daughter, and had plans to keep them away from her, but MC told him not to. The baby girl needs to have some entertainment in her life too. It still worries Shun as to what that entertainment might be. He also really hopes that Yosuke doesn't become her favourite uncle.

His daughter is his new muse, his new inspiration. He pens down poems and stories for her and she listens to him with all the attention that she can give at that age- eyes wide, saliva dribbling onto his shirt and hands in her mouth. It is an adorable sight to witness.

Shun has a really good singing voice and it moves MC to tears whenever she sees him singing to their daughter, her head on his chest and her little hand clasped in his- like a protector. His world revolves around his wife and daughter, he's proud of them, for he knows that they're his forever.

Ronnie Biggs

Ronald Arthur "Ronnie" Biggs (8 August 1929 – 18 December 2013) was an English thief, known for his role in the Great Train Robbery of 1963, for his escape from prison in 1965, for living as a fugitive for 36 years and for his various publicity stunts while in exile. In 2001, he returned to the United Kingdom and spent several years in prison, where his health rapidly declined. Biggs was released from prison on compassionate grounds on 6 August 2009[3] and died in a nursing home in December 2013.

Early life

Biggs was born in Stockwell, Lambeth, London. As a child during the Second World War, he was evacuated to Flitwick, Bedfordshire, and then Cornwall.[4]

Career

In 1947, at age 18, Biggs joined the RAF but was dishonorably discharged on charges of desertion two years later after breaking into a local chemist shop. A month later he was convicted of stealing a car and ended up in a civilian prison. On release he took part in a failed robbery on a bookmaker office in Lambeth, South London. During his subsequent time in prison he met Bruce Reynolds.[4]

On his release from prison Biggs tried to go straight and trained as a carpenter. When he was 27, he married 17-year-old Charmian Powell, daughter of a primary school headmaster, with whom he had three sons.[4]

Great Train Robbery

In need of a loan, Biggs approached Reynolds, who offered him a place on the proposed train robbery.[4] Biggs was tasked by Reynolds to find a suitable engine driver to move the train forwards to the unloading point, to which he sourced Stan Agate, known on the gang as "Pop" due to his age. On the night of the raid, Biggs was a passenger in the stand-by getaway car and only saw the haul once the gang returned to Leatherslade farm.Robbing the mail train from Glasgow to London in the early hours of 8 August 1963 (Biggs's 34th birthday),[5][6] yielded the participants £2.6 million. Biggs's share of the robbery was £147,000.[7] The engine driver Jack Mills was beaten with an iron bar in the course of the robbery. Biggs's fingerprints were found by the Metropolitan Police investigation team on a ketchup bottle at Leatherslade Farm. Three weeks later, he was arrested along with 11 other members of the gang in South London. In 1964, nine of the 15-strong gang, including Biggs, were jailed for the crime; most received sentences of 30 years.

Escape and abscondment

Biggs served 15 months before escaping from Wandsworth Prison on 8 July 1965 by scaling the wall with a rope ladder and dropping onto a waiting removal van.[5][8] He fled to Brussels by boat, then went with his wife Charmian and two sons, Nicholas and Chris, to Paris, where he acquired new identity papers and underwent plastic surgery.[6]

Australia

In 1966, Biggs took a British Overseas Airways Corporation flight to Sydney, where he lived for several months before moving to the seaside suburb of Glenelg in Adelaide, South Australia.[6] In 1967, just after their third child was born, Biggs received an anonymous letter from Britain telling him that Interpol suspected that he was in Australia and that he should move. In May 1967, the family moved to Melbourne, Victoria, where he rented a house in the suburb of Blackburn North, while his wife Charmian and his three sons lived in Doncaster East. He had a number of jobs in Melbourne before undertaking set construction work at the Channel 9 TV studios. In October 1969, a newspaper report by a Reuters correspondent revealed that Biggs was living in Melbourne and claimed that police were closing in on him. The story led the 6 o'clock news at Channel 9 and Biggs fled his home, staying with family friends in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Five months later, he fled on a passenger liner from the Port of Melbourne, using the altered passport of a friend. His wife and sons remained in Australia. Twenty days later, the ship berthed in Panama and within two weeks Biggs flew to Brazil.[6]

Rio de Janeiro

In 1970, when Biggs arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil did not have an extradition treaty with the United Kingdom.[8] In 1971, Biggs's eldest son, Nicholas, aged 10, died in a car crash[9] in Melbourne.[10]In 1974, Daily Express reporter Colin MacKenzie received information suggesting that Biggs was in Rio de Janeiro; a team consisting of MacKenzie, photographer Bill Lovelace and reporter Michael O'Flaherty confirmed this and broke the story. Scotland Yard detective Jack Slipper arrived soon afterwards, but Biggs could not be extradited because his girlfriend, nightclub dancer Raimunda de Castro, was pregnant. Brazilian law at the time did not allow a parent of a Brazilian child to be extradited.[11]

In April 1977 Biggs attended a cocktail party onboard the Royal Navy frigate Danae, which was in Rio for a courtesy visit, but he was not arrested.[9] Though in Brazil he was safe from extradition, Biggs's status as a known felon meant he could not work, visit bars or be away from home after 10 p.m.[12] To provide an income, Biggs's family hosted barbecues at his home in Rio, where tourists could meet Biggs and hear him recount his involvement in the robbery, which, in fact, was minor. Biggs was even visited by former footballer Stanley Matthews, whom Biggs afterwards invited to his apartment after hearing that he was in Rio. In April 1981, Biggs was kidnapped by a gang of British ex-soldiers. The boat they took him aboard suffered mechanical problems off Barbados, and the stranded kidnappers and Biggs were rescued by the Barbados coastguard and towed into port in Barbados. The kidnappers hoped to collect a reward from the British police; however, like Brazil, Barbados had no extradition treaty with the United Kingdom and Biggs was sent back to Brazil.[14] In February 2006, Channel 4 aired a documentary featuring dramatisations of the attempted kidnapping and interviews with John Miller, the ex-British Army soldier who carried it out. The team was headed by security consultant Patrick King. In the documentary, King claimed that the kidnapping may have been a deniable operation.[15] The ITN reporter Desmond Hamill paid to accompany Biggs on the private Learjet returning him to Brazil and secured an exclusive interview as well as convincing Biggs to kiss the tarmac upon landing.[16]

Biggs's son by de Castro, Michael Biggs, eventually became a member of the successful children's programme and music band Turma do Balão Mágico, bringing a new source of income to his father. In a short time, however, the band faded into obscurity and dissolved, leaving father and son in financial difficulty again. In 1991, Biggs sang vocals for the songs "Police on My Back" and "Carnival in Rio (Punk Was)" by German punk band Die Toten Hosen. In 1993, Biggs sang on three tracks for the album "Bajo otra bandera" by Argentinian punk band Pilsen.[17][18]In 1997 the UK and Brazil ratified an extradition treaty. Two months later, the UK Government made a formal request to the Brazilian government for Biggs's extradition. Biggs had stated that he would no longer oppose extradition.[11] English lawyer Nigel Sangster QC travelled to Brazil to advise Biggs. The extradition request was rejected by Brazilian Supreme Court, giving Biggs the right to live in Brazil for the rest of his life.[19][20] Following the extradition attempt, Biggs collaborated with Bruce Henry (an American double-bass player), Jaime Shields and Aureo de Souza to record Mailbag Blues, a musical narrative of his life that he intended to use as a movie soundtrack. This album was re-released in 2004 by whatmusic.com.[21]

In 2001 Biggs announced to The Sun newspaper that he would be willing to return to the UK.

Imprisonment

Having 28 years of his sentence left to serve, Biggs was aware that he would be detained upon arrival in Britain. His trip back to Britain on a private jet was paid for by The Sun newspaper, which reportedly paid Michael Biggs £20,000 plus other expenses in return for exclusive rights to the news story. Biggs arrived on 7 May 2001, whereupon he was immediately arrested and re-imprisoned.[6]His son said in a press release that, contrary to some press reports, Biggs did not return to the UK simply to receive health care which was unavailable in Brazil,[22] but that it was his desire was to "walk into a Margate pub as an Englishman and buy a pint of bitter".[23] John Mills, Jack Mills' son, was unforgiving: "I deeply resent those, including Biggs, who have made money from my father's death. Biggs should serve his punishment."[24] Mills never fully recovered from his injuries sustained during the robbery. He died of an unrelated cause (leukaemia) in 1970.[25]

On 14 November 2001, Biggs petitioned Governor Hynd of HMP Belmarsh for early release on compassionate grounds based on his poor health. He had been treated four times at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich in less than six months. His health was deteriorating rapidly and he asked to be released into the care of his son for his remaining days. The application was denied. On 10 August 2005, it was reported that Biggs had contracted MRSA. His representatives, seeking for his release on grounds of compassion, said that their client's death was likely to be imminent.[26] On 26 October 2005, the Home Secretary Charles Clarke declined his appeal stating that his illness was not terminal. Home Office compassion policy is to release prisoners with three months left to live.[27] Biggs was claimed by his son Michael to need a tube for feeding and to have "difficulty" speaking.

On 4 July 2007, Biggs was moved from Belmarsh Prison to Norwich Prison on compassionate grounds.[28] In December 2007, Biggs issued a further appeal, from Norwich Prison, asking to be released from jail to die with his family: "I am an old man and often wonder if I truly deserve the extent of my punishment. I have accepted it and only want freedom to die with my family and not in jail. I hope Mr. Straw decides to allow me to do that. I have been in jail for a long time and I want to die a free man. I am sorry for what happened. It has not been an easy ride over the years. Even in Brazil I was a prisoner of my own making. There is no honour to being known as a Great Train Robber. My life has been wasted."[29]

In January 2009, after a series of strokes that were said to have rendered him unable to speak or walk, it was claimed in the press that Biggs was to be released in August 2009 and would die a "free man".[30] His son Michael had also claimed that the Parole Board might bring the release date forward to July 2009. On 13 February 2009, it was reported that Biggs had been taken to hospital from his cell at Norwich Prison, suffering from pneumonia.[31][32][33] This was confirmed the following day by his son Michael, who said Biggs had serious pneumonia but was stable.[34] News of his condition prompted fresh calls from Michael Biggs for his release on compassionate grounds.[35]

On 23 April the Parole Board recommended that Biggs be released on 4 July,[36] having served a third of his 30-year sentence. However, on 1 July Jack Straw did not accept the Parole Board's recommendation and refused parole, stating that Biggs was 'wholly unrepentant'.[3] On 28 July 2009, Biggs was readmitted to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with pneumonia. He had been admitted to the same hospital a month earlier with a chest infection and a fractured hip but returned to prison on 17 July 2009. His son Michael said, in one of his frequent news releases: "It's the worst he's ever been. The doctors have just told me to rush there."[37]

On 30 July 2009, it was claimed by representatives of Biggs that he had been given "permission" to challenge the decision to refuse him parole. However, the Home Office stated only that an application for the early release on compassionate grounds of a prisoner at HMP Norwich had been received by the public protection casework section in the National Offender Management Service.[38] Biggs was released from custody on 6 August, two days before his 80th birthday, on 'compassionate grounds'.[39]

Later life

Following his release from prison, Biggs's health improved, leading to suggestions that he might soon be moved from hospital to a nursing home.[40] In response to claims that Biggs's state of health had been faked, his lawyer stated, "This man is going to die, there is going to be no Lazarus coming back from the dead, he is ill, he is seriously ill."[40] However, Biggs himself stated, "I've got a bit of living to do yet. I might even surprise them all by lasting until Christmas, that would be fantastic."[40]On 29 May 2010, Biggs was again admitted to hospital in London after complaining of chest pain. He underwent tests at Barnet General Hospital. His son Michael stated, "he's conscious but he's in a lot of pain".[41]

In August 2010, it was claimed by the Sunday Mirror that Biggs would be attending a gala dinner where he would be collecting a lifetime achievement award for his services to crime.[42]On 10 February 2011, Biggs was admitted to Barnet General Hospital with another suspected stroke. His son Michael said he was conscious and preparing to have a CT scan and a series of other tests to determine what had happened.[43] On 17 November 2011, Biggs launched his new and updated autobiography, Ronnie Biggs: Odd Man Out, The Last Straw, at Shoreditch House in London.[44] He was unable to speak and used a word board to communicate with the press.

On 12 January 2012, ITV Studios announced it had commissioned a five-part drama, Mrs Biggs, to be based around the life of Biggs's wife Charmian, played by Sheridan Smith and Biggs by Daniel Mays. Charmian Biggs acted as a consultant on the series flew to Britain in February 2012, from Australia, just before filming for Mrs Biggs began and visited Biggs.[45][46]In March 2013, Biggs attended the funeral of fellow train robber, Bruce Reynolds.[47] In July 2013, The Great Train Robbery 50th Anniversary:1963–2013 was published, with inputs from Biggs and Reynolds.

Death

On 18 December 2013, aged 84, Biggs died at the Carlton Court Care Home in Barnet, north London, where he was being cared for.[4][48] His death coincidentally occurred hours before the first broadcast of a two-part BBC television series The Great Train Robbery, in which Biggs is portrayed by actor Jack Gordon.[49]

Two Projects Are Filming Again. Here’s How They’re Doing It.

Baltasar Kormakur, the Icelandic director best known in the United States for “Everest” and “Contraband,” turned to a color-coded armband system to get his Netflix sci-fi series “Katla” back into production in Reykjavik after the coronavirus shut it down in mid-March.

The producer Lucas Foster made the difficult — and expensive — decision to isolate his entire cast and crew in a small town in Australia to make a reimagined horror film based on the Stephen King short story “Children of the Corn.”

The two filmmakers are among the few who have found their way back into production amid a pandemic. Armed with expansive medical staffs, stringent protocols and imposing security guards willing to yell “Two meters!” whenever anyone gets too close, Kormakur and Foster are the unlikely trailblazers at the dawn of a new era in filmmaking.

Everyone wants to know how they did it. In lengthy phone interviews, the two explained in detail the steps they took to get cameras rolling again.

Color-Coding on an Iceland Soundstage

Kormakur has talked through his methods with London’s film commission, the American Society of Cinematographers and his former partners at Working Title and Universal Pictures. He’s currently making a video for Netflix to share with other eager creators looking for a way back.

“I will probably be more known for Covid than for any of my films,” Kormakur said with a laugh. “That is kind of sad.”

In March, Kormakur began filming “Katla,” an eight-episode supernatural drama centered on a subglacial volcano that disturbs a tranquil small town. Four days into filming on a 50,000-square-foot soundstage that he owns, the government shut the production down along with the rest of the country. Sheltering at home with his wife and four children, Kormakur engineered a system he thought would allow the cast and crew to return once the virus had peaked.

His method involved a color-coded armband system: Those wearing yellow could be near the camera; the actors, and the makeup and costume professionals wore black and spent most of their prep time in a cordoned-off area of the set; and the producers, script supervisors and visual effects people wore red and were sequestered near the monitors. A few lucky ones were given blue armbands, which allowed them access to all areas of the set. No group had more than 20 people in it. “This way we could monitor each other,” he said. “It’s hard with crews. People have a tendency to roam, and it’s easy to lose control of it.”

Kormakur’s system was only possible because of Iceland’s rigorous testing policies. Netflix, too, was heavily involved, with executives testing Kormakur’s methods. The streaming giant financed the extra costs associated with the safety protocols and paid the cast and crews’ salaries when they were shut down.

First, under the system, Kormakur and his entire 80-person cast and crew were tested. Then, each morning, everyone entering the set had their temperature scanned. Catering was turned into individual boxed meals. Doorknobs, toilets and other surfaces were sanitized on the hour. Most everyone except the actors wore masks, and the makeup artists and production designers were gloved. “So much for protecting the environment,” he quipped.

Production has been up and running now for four weeks. And though Kormakur and the other directors filming the series have yet to try a scene involving any close contact or intimacy, it’s continued without incident. (Kormakur says they will address those scenes once restrictions loosen further. If that doesn’t happen in time, they will retest actors before filming them. Iceland is currently reopening in phases.)

Two crew members who went to the set with elevated temperatures wound up testing positive for Covid-19. They were both sent home to self-isolate for two weeks, and no one else became infected.

“Our methods worked,” he added. “We caught two people who in another case would have been working with this virus without knowing it.” He added, “I think if you can create filters in society then you can help find the virus and stop it. Whether it’s film companies or other companies.”

When I spoke with Kormakur, only three Covid-19 patients remained hospitalized in Iceland. Now, Kormakur and the Iceland government are looking at bringing foreign crews into the country to bolster production. He says he could isolate them in empty hotels and get them all tested so they could begin work, a scenario he thinks could help restore Iceland’s struggling economy.

“At a certain point, the support and financial packages are going to run dry,” he said. “I don’t know if the Iceland government has much more to give.”

Isolating in a Small Australian Town

Foster, a “Children of the Corn” producer, was 10 days out from finishing his film when we spoke, and at the end, he said he would turn to the mountains of phone messages and emails from eager filmmakers looking for advice.

In a recent phone interview, he debated whether what he has experienced could be translated to other jobs: “I finished my 24th day of photography so I have 24 days of experience doing this and learning,” he said. “I think that’s the valuable part. But what we did in Australia is not a direct crossover to, say, shooting in Los Angeles or in Vancouver.”

The need for a cornfield in November is what first brought Foster from his Los Angeles home to Richmond in New South Wales. The pandemic is what kept him there. And on May 28, he and the writer-director Kurt Wimmer will complete production on their horror film, shot entirely during the spread of the coronavirus.

Like Kormakur’s set, this one was divided by job function. A nurse, a paramedic and a doctor were present daily. The cast and crew were required to fill out wellness questionnaires at the beginning and end of each day. Temperatures were checked. Surfaces were sanitized. During one particularly challenging sequence shot at night, the actors were dressed in neoprene suits both to keep them warm and to offer them another level of protection when they came in close contact during the scene. (According to Australia’s policies, the “two meters” rule did not have to be observed when the cameras were rolling.) Hand sanitizer was ubiquitous.

It was also crucial that the majority of the movie be filmed on an isolated farm in a small town. (The cast and crew have taken over hotels, Airbnbs and some cottages in and around Richmond.) Australia has also been very successful in flattening the curve and has begun opening its economy.

But for Foster, who said that the extra precautions added at least 20 percent to the initial $10 million budget of his indie film, the most crucial decision he made was to house his entire cast and crew together, including the guardians for more than 25 child actors. He even quarantined an actor’s dog.

“It was an uncomfortable decision but one that made this whole thing possible,” said Foster, who himself has been isolating with his film family for close to 80 days. “It’s not an inexpensive way to operate a film.”

He also contended with a shortened shooting schedule because of the usual restrictions placed on minors, navigated the stress levels of a disparate crew and found replacement actors when a few dropped out at the last minute. One 12-year-old was too afraid to get on an airplane from Los Angeles. Another actor, based in Sydney, decided against making the trip to Richmond.

“There is no cheat sheet for this,” Foster said. “Every single thing that everybody in every department has to do” must be rethought, he added. “Retraining on the job has been the most challenging thing.”

He also said that he underestimated the toll filming during a pandemic would take on actors, who had to stay present while copious distractions swirled around them. In the initial days of production, he admitted, he didn’t pay enough attention to his crew’s mental health, a situation he’s rectified with more thorough monitoring and less news watching.

“Everybody was stressed,” he said. “The economic impact of this and the physical toll on people was something we may not have handled that well at the beginning.”

Yet, even with all the extra pressures, Foster is comfortable with his plan to proceed.

“We made the decision as a group that we were better off isolating in a small town with each other and continuing to do our work, keep our employment alive and our sanity,” he said. “Our creative output is a large part of our identity. I didn’t want to kill that.”

Hello everyone, I am an international student who's been in the USA (Buffalo, NY) for the past 2 years working hard on my masters (i'm 25 now). I bought a POS Saturn last year for 2000 dollars and, well, for that i needed to get car insurance since it's mandatory in this country. Since i was from abroad and i had a learner's permit at the time, i had to get insurance with my international license. Progressive was my only choice so i paid around 700$ for 6 months. That's the rate I've been paying for the last year. Unfortunately, i just don't have the money anymore to pay 700 more dollars for the next 6 months. I tried different insurance companies but they are all around the same range. Apparently, i was stupid enough to not get a credit card as soon as i landed in this country. I was raised with the if you don't have money, don't spend it philosophy so i just used my debit card. This is the only reason that i can see for these absurd rates. Every single one of my friends ( all international students ) pay around 200-250/six months dollars for their pieces of crap cars. I just feel like i'm not being given a fair deal. Not having any credit might put a penalty on me, i understand somewhat how a capitalist mind works... let's say about 100-150 more dollars for 6 months, but a whopping 500 $ ? Don't you think it's kind of messed up that first of all it's mandatory, and then there's no baseline to at least make sure that noone gets ripped off. Today i was FRANK AND STRAIGHT TO HIM and told him about my question asked on different online forums and all the answers and suggestions which were discussed with me. Recommendations of car insurance for someone who is an experienced driver but it is their first cover?

My husband has held a driving licence for 10 years. We don't own a car and never have done as we couldn't afford it but fortunately we lived in London so we had good use of public transport. Over this time we have rented a car numerous times and have driven all over England up and down motorways and country roads plus on all our annual holidays abroad. In addition, we have loan of a car for 7 months every year of a family member who goes abroad for the winter (and are on their insurance). We've just moved out of London and have now bought a car but when we've got quotes for insurance (looking at direct quotes as well as websites as via GoCompare) they are expensive ranging from 715 - 1695! When we called up a few insurers to find out why it is this high, they say it's because it's the first insurance he has had and it looks like he's an inexperienced driver. They say that they need proof of his experience to be able to bring the premiums down however when we say we have proof of him being on the family member's insurance as well as being able to show previous car hire rentals they won't accept this. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or know of any insurance companies they'd recommend for situations like this. Many thanks.""

Car insurance claim against me?

Hi, I have received a letter from my insurance company stating that i have had an insurance claim against me, and i asked them for more detail, the time and date. They gave me the place and date, and i was there at the time of the incident, but i did not hit the car that they stated. I was parked (front of car) against a metal barrier, spaces either side of me, but someone went and parked behind me. i got my friend out the car to guide me back as i did (sort of a 3 point turn) to get out sideways. I did not hit the car. Someone was approx 50-75 feet away and they must have taken the reg plate. There was noone else around at the time, otherwise i would have asked them to move their car.
