A friend of mine is visiting Fukuoka, Japan and asked for restaurant recommendations, and without hesitation my first answer was “Kawaya!” While they do have a few other items on their menu, Kawaya specializes in grilled chicken skin, or “kawa”, hence the name of the shop. There’s a minimum order of ten skewers but you’ll eat way more than that, trust me. Be sure to call ahead to make a reservation as they fill up quickly!

Something about the book and note combination makes this discovery particularly hilarious. I found this terse note (admonishing Scotty for throwing chicken skin into the sink) in an 1897 book about Robert E Lee.
The note reads: “Scotty never throw chicken skins down sink - I had to dig it out it almost caused flood”

Why is all the talk about keratosis pillaris negative?
Even when it's a celebrity it's talked about like, "Oh she suffers from the condition" even though the only suffering is her having to deal people wanting her to hide it.
Keratosis pillaris, aka strawberry/chicken skin, is when the skin produces too much keratin which can build up around hair follicles and make small bumps that appear pink on light skin, and darker browns on darker skin stones. This poses no health risks besides you maybe absent mindedly picking at it. The condition itself is not uncomfortable and does not cause itchiness, though it may appear more with low humidity.
And approximately 40% of people in north america have it! Young people are most likely to have it since it can dissappear with age, usually around 30.
So why are so many people talking about it negatively? It's just some bumps, that is it.
We need to talk about as the neutral thing it is, it is just a way the human can be. It is not harmful, it's not "unsightly" or "cosmetically displeasing" it is just a part of a lot of human bodies.
It's fucked that keratosis pillaris is talked about like a problem to be solved.

Chicken Skin
Leo: When chicken Yokai and chicken mutants get goosebumps, shouldn't it be called "piel del pollo"?
FTaaH Leo: God, I wish I'd taken the Peepaw Route and tried to kill you when we first met.

The Lowdown on KP
For all my Gen Z readers, no I’m not talking about Kim Possible here. Although the theme song is super catchy, I’m talking about Keratosis Pilaris. I have had KP since I was little and also struggled with it since I was little. Otherwise known as ‘chicken skin’, keratosis pilaris is annoying, irritating, and causes embracing little red bumps that appear on my upper back and the back of my arms. They itch and can at times me super sensitive. They get worse during the winter months, the wrong kind of sunscreen can cause a flare up, like I said are just downright annoying.
I have tried nearly every product under the sun. I’ve been to dermatologists, I’ve read skincare articles and honestly I’ve found, like with everything else, KP has no one size fits all solution.
I have found a gluten free diet has been the biggest game changer for my KP and overall health but still I get the occasional flare up which can last weeks to months at a time.
Over the last few months I’ve discovered that AHA/BHA + lactic acid based body washes have been the biggest saving grace for my skin. Because acids  gently exfoliate and help my skin cells turn over faster, my skin is smoother and less irritated. I highly recommend using a rich body oil or body cream after though. Lock in moisture and also wear sunscreen. AHA/BHA will make skin super sensitive to sun.
Best Body Washes I’ve Tried For KP:
Necessaire The Body Exfoliator ($30; Sephora.com)… This one made my skin super soft and smooth, however the niacinamide did give my skin a slight niacin flush.
SkinFix Resurface+ Glycolic Renewing Scrub ($32; Sephora.com)… I love love love this product first because it goes on pre shower and turns to a cream leaving my skin feeling soft, but second because the line is specifically made for KP. I love that it’s clean, and cruelty free. I saw a complete difference in my skin after just one use.
Others To Try…
First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub with 10% AHA ($30; Sephora.com)
Peach and Lily KP Bump Boss Microderm Body Scrub ($28; peachandlily.com)
*NOTE: AHA/BHA should not be combined with a retinol. All products listed are anti-aging and prevention skin products. <3

Tuna Tacos, Pan Seared Black Seabass, Curry Duck Breast, Poblano Mac & Cheese Casserole, Honey Soy Brussels, Sticky Toffee Cake (shared all). Table 28. Little Rock, Arkansas. 1.13.2024.
NOTE TO SELF: Everything here was fine, but it lacked that special something to make it worth talking about. With the exception of the Brussels, which were excellent. The rosemary crema was interesting, in a good way. I've always wanted to go to Table 28, but -- for the money -- I'm not sure I need to go back. If the vibe was better, maybe, but the vibe is weird -- probably because it's in an old Best Western hotel.
Currently ranked 4th of 13 January meals.

[Little bit of the cheddar. The maple syrup kissed the smoke. That's a contender for the title right there, buddy. -Thank you very much. -The chicken skin, a little bit of maple syrup, tastes really good.]
