Me, being one of this team's few fans. (They had so much potential. They could have been scarier than Cipher if they had handled them properly, but they really didn't. Control over news media, eavesdropping on Holocaster conversations, Masters shows they have plainclothes agents, something that was kinda hinted here, Malva being a double agent in the E4, among other things, there's a sense they have a secret stranglehold on Kalos and it would have been amazing if they built on that sense of paranoia.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wonder if the scientists will ever make it into Masters? They do have interesting designs, but even as far as admins go, they don't really have much going for them personality-wise. Maybe I'm spoiled with more recent villain admins like the ones from ORAS or Faba 😅
This had me so confused initially playing thru X back in the day, very randomly coming across this HUGE, imposing man (the chibi player is like up to his knee) saying something about an immortal Pokemon before lumbering off. This is the last we see of him before he's captured by Flare, and I always wondered how they brought him in. (And if it was Malva or Lysandre who captured him.)

Just for fun, I'm going to make an absolute WORST CASE scenario for Pokemon day (with sillies)
Pokemon decides to announce NFTs (they did put out a job listing for an NFT expert months ago)
Pokemon merch that's just more overpriced garbage. Shitty pastel tshirts that just have the pokemon logo stamped on the left breast area- $50, only goes to size XL.
Pokemon Go has way too much screen time for yet another Kanto fest
Pokemon Masters, Unite, and Cafe just won't end their trailers.
New tv show that's just a vague reality show about celebrities that liked Pokémon once, and it's more of an episodic celebrity biography show with one line or two about Pokémon. Not even fun ones, C tier at best. So, something like T@yl*r Sw*ft's boyfriend's football career, but one line about playing Blue for a few hours at his cousin's house.
Pokemon Home fees will increase
Pokemon Bank will close TODAY
Port of Red, Blue, Gold, Silver, Ruby, and Sapphire to NSO- you have to pay for online to access it over cloud- internet connection required, and for some reason you have to pay extra for them in a Pokémon exclusive expansion pass. No word of third versions. Does not include the events or Japan exclusives.
Black and White 1 remakes announced. It's chibi like BDSP, colors are dry and washed out, there's graphical errors in the trailer frames, they state BW2 specifically is not part of the remake, they promise tweaks to make the gameplay EASIER than ever. Parts of the game are made with AI and script rewritten by Chat GPT, with an error you spot easily in a trailer. Masuda has the remake game director's neck clenched tightly from the back. He looks at you and says "you will buy the games this time. This isn't a request." Japan pre-order exclusives are amazingly crafted Reshiram and Zekrom statues that even have light up tails and eyes, and also you get shiny versions of them only in the Japanese copies, US gets a cheap piece of paper with generic stock images of Pikachu and Charizard on it, everything is shiny locked for everywhere not Japan.
They tease a Legends game. You think it's going to be amazing, you think oh my god we're getting Legends Unova... wait, it looks Japanese, maybe LEGENDS CELEBI???...it's Legends......... KANTO, and it's the most gorgeous thing you've ever seen after the clear lack of care put into their non gen 1 games since the Switch launched. A selling point is, once again, no new Pokémon after the og 151 so older fans can enjoy it better. Your starters are Charmander, Charmander, and Charmander, you might encounter Bulbasaur and Squirtle in post game. Your job is to stop EEEVIL outsiders from the rest of the regions with their newer Pokémon from settling into Kanto. Johto is having an awesome party next door with all the regions invited, but there's been a convenient landslide blocking the only way over. It's just reskinned Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. Professor Oak is your age and putting moves on your mom.
Features a mythical Pokémon based on depression that looks like a tiny salary man, comes with its own movie featuring Ash as a depressed Millenial realizing he peaked at 10. He has to get a job. Pikachu is dying of old age and Ash has to "grow up" and release him and all of his other still living Pokémon. It cuts to real life, and Pokémon was just a game he has been playing for years to cope with his parents' divorce and eventually his own with Misty, then May, then Dawn, then Serena, then Goh, etc. Ash's dad is finally revealed: it's Chris Pratt with bad cgi wrinkles, back with milk. They go to the arcade to play Mario to stomp on some................................................................................................................................................................................... KOOPAS.
"Well that's all. Oh wait, one more thing!"
Ed Sheeran and T@yl*r Sw*ft music video featuring 1 Pikachu in a frame that can be easily edited out, with a song not even about Pokémon. The song sounds like shit and is about another breakup.
There, the bar has been lowered to the floor. It cannot get worse.

Alex is an aloof, sarcastic, moody, surly, and sometimes a downright ass of a teenager. He just wants to be left alone, but the universe doesn't seem to get the message. He's come to Paldea on a Student Exchange, his family hoping the time abroad helps him find what he needs.
Max is the polar opposite, an energetic, happy, wholesome young teen with a love for grass type Pokémon and sports. Nailing a sponsorship from the Kalos Tourism Board and then an endorsement from Galar's own Champion to boot, Max has eagerly come to Galar to pursue all his interests at once in the League Challenge.

About the Players:
Pokémon Violet is being played by one-half of a dynamic duo (Taz/Trina of tazsaintsart) while Pokémon Sword is being played by the other half (Hope, aka gleaming_hope). Since our respective games are new to us, and we wanted to share our thoughts and quips and feelings on these games through the eyes of our youngest characters, Alex and Max. Additionally, we have the support of our friends Dia (@diamondphantom) and Alyss (@calicowitchling) who are assisting Taz with filling in character tones on story posts~!
FAQ:
Q: Is there a set posting schedule? A: Hell no. Making a schedule and deadlines is the quickest way to destroy my motivation to draw. The pressure turns into anxiety which turns into guilt which turns into shame and then nobody gets anything fun anymore.
Q: Sword's old! Why would you include it? A: Because it's new to Hope (OP's husbando) and he has his own quirky sense of humour worth sharing too. Besides, it means more story posts for you and I feel it's a great counterbalance to the story of Violet.
Q: Will you include the DLC? A: Eventually! Gotta' finish the main story first!
Q: Is it just me, or is the scaling/heights between characters a bit wonky? A: It's not you! The in-game player charas skewed my perception so it took me a while to figure out character heights that I could use consistently, so Alex might seem shorter than he should be in earlier posts, while Max was a bit bigger than he was meant to be.
Q: What's this 'Lato' thing I keep seeing mentioned? A: Lato is a fan region based on Poland, created by this blog's art assistant @diamondphantom~ In Alex's canon/backstory, he had a particularly lengthy school trip through the region four years prior to Paldea. It doesn't really affect the current story beyond showing that Alex has had a significant mood shift in the four years since the school trip.
Q: Will you draw '_____'? A: Maybe, maybe not! Aside from a set motivation for the boys, posts will just be whatever we feel like sharing.
Q: Can I suggest ideas, or submit my own work to this blog? A: The Ask and Submissions boxes are open for this very reason! If you would like to share a moment where our paths cross, you're very welcome to! We only ask that you keep it SFW and don't post major spoilers for either game; you can see where the boys are at via the badge counts in the blog header.

Nintendo Direct: June 2023
I have been catching the last couple of Nintendo Directs, and I was super psyched to see the most recent one. The one before gave us old handheld systems playable on the Nintendo Switch. So I was hoping for good news in games coming up...
Tumblr media
Now, I watched it on 6/25 so days after. If you have a switch, you can still watch it. Or maybe Youtube? Here are some of my thoughts on the games I saw:
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC: I have been out of the pokemon loop for while but the DLC’s look good.
Sonic: same thing with pokemon, but glad to see it still alive. It has been around a while.
Palia: looks like a neat real life simulator.
Persona 5 Tactica: Cute characters in chibi form! Happy to see a title that has only one other title on switch to have more titles.
Mythforce: this is such a nostalgia trap, but it looks real fun! I would totally play this!
Splatoon 3 Splatfest: This game seems like COD but kid version. I never really got into this. But this looks like DLC.
Detective Pikachu Returns: The movie was great, the game was good. I love this as a direction for Pokemon.
Super Mario RPG: This is a remake of an older game of the same name. It looks like a refreshing take on mario games, which are classic.
New Nintendo Switch Peach Game: This looks like another remake of an older game.
Luigi’s Mansion 2 Dark Moon: Another old remake, I do love the Luigi games and hope that this is to appease the players as they make a new one.
Batman Arkham Trilogy: This was supposed to be one of the better batman games and comics, and this looks dope-I am looking forward to playing this for the first time on switch.
Gloomhaven: Good looking game, card based.
Just Dance: nice active game, nice to see it continuing.
Silent Hope: Anime game. meh.
Fae Farm: this looks good, I kind of think there are too many simulators out, but it is supposed to be one of the better ones.
Hot Wheels Unleased 2: Looks ok for a racing game, but I also kind of feel like there is a lot of competition in this genre.
Manic Mechanics: This game looks like overcooked, and the builder game. I love games like this, this one is happening.
Mario + Rabbids Spark of Hope: Mario doesn’t do well in turn based games, in my opinion, but its an interesting game.
Dragon Quest Monsters: This looks like a pokemon wannabe, but it looks not bad.
Pikmin 1, 2, 4: I have never played this series but it looks cute and I would not mind this as a multiplayer family game.
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection: this is an old game, I might even try it if it goes on sale.
Vampire Survivors: This game looks really fun, simple but oh so deceptively hard. I do really want to try this game.
Headbangers Rhythm Royale: I am getting this game, its a beat game with birds. Yes.
Penny’s Big Breakaway: It looks like a hodgepodge of many games but unique in its own way.
Mario Kart Booster Course Pass Wave 5: I should be more excited but I am not.
Star Ocean The Second Story R: Meh, another anime game.
WarioWare Move It: This looks like 1 2 switch but mario, I mean wario. Might be nice for an active game.
The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Amiibo: Amiibos are still a thing? This game looks good, but there are so many zeldas out at one time right now.
Super Mario Bros Wonder: Looks like a new direction for the mario side scroller.
For those that want to read more about this: https://www.nintendolife.com/features/nintendo-direct-june-2023-every-announcement-and-game-reveal
There were so many games revealed, that I had to reference the list to make this post. Obviously, ones that did not stick with me means I was not the intended customer but there are so many gaming customers these days! Games I am looking forward to are: Headbangers Rhythm Royale, Vampire Survivors, Manic Mechanics, Batman Arkham Trilogy. What games are you looking forward to?

My Favorite Fishing in Video Games Where Fishing is Not Core Game Play
A really awesome surprise for me is always to boot up a game that is full of action and suspense to be introduced to a fishing side activity. I have toiled away at fishing in games for hundreds of hours at least. It has gotten so bad in some instances that my friends have asked me why I haven’t just taken the plunge into real fishing. It’s definitely because that is a lot of work and in real life I don’t catch a fish every 30 seconds. They have also wondered why I don’t just play a fishing simulator like Planet Fishing (Shout out to Planet Fishing that’s a great game). And that’s where I have to think for a while. Fishing while you have better things to do like save the world is very special. You aren’t fishing because it’s the objective of the game or because that’s why you are there, you are fishing because it’s fun and maybe you need a break to swing a fishing rod instead of a sword. And then you can stop, and get back to fighting or whatever the rest of the game entails. Below are games that have fishing in them for mostly no reason at all. I have shamelessly spent way to long with my bait in these waters and absolutely loved every second of it and I hope that you (the reader) can find a lot of relaxation in these waters as well.
Tumblr media
Pokemon Series
Since the very first Pokemon game there has been fishing. You get the old rod from some guy and then you are free to fish up as many goldfishes that you want hoping that one of them will grow up to be a 21 foot tall dragon. Pokemon has combined their fishing with their main game play and makes you at least start a battle with the fish you drag onto shore. Now fishing in Pokemon is pretty subpar mainly because a single Pokemon game hasn’t really been known to have more than a handful of Pokemon that you can fish for. Also if you are looking for a strong water type Pokemon you could do a lot better than fishing for it. Typically a Pokemon player will fish about 5-10 times total. And although fishing for Pokemon isn’t all that great it has been in every game for over 20 years and that is pretty impressive. It’s a small detail that makes the world of Pokemon feel like a real world of wild creatures.
Tumblr media
Sonic Adventure DX
In Sonic Adventure DX you are given the choice to play as a lot of different characters, one of which is named Big the Cat. Most of the characters are combat characters that rely on speed and attacks to get through levels, some even wielding rocket launchers and extremely oversized hammers. However when you start the story of Big the Cat you are thrown in a completely opposite direction. Big the Cat is a giant purple cat who lives in the jungle with his best friend Froggy. Froggy accidentally swallows one of the most powerful objects in the Sonic universe and Big the Cat must chase him all over the world trying to fish him out of where he is hiding so that he can eject the Chaos Emerald out of him and they can return to their life in the jungle. The fishing mechanics in this game actually are really good and this is probably because Sega had just put out a series of mildly successful Bass fishing games before releasing this game. Either way its absolutely hilarious that Big the Cat gets to defeat Chaos 6 right before Super Sonic has his showdown with Chaos Perfect.
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy XV
In Final Fantasy XV you play as Noctis and his favorite hobby is fishing. When I first played this game I sped through it and never fished once and reached the end of the game never indulging Noctis in his hobby. When I replayed Final Fantasy XV I fished for 50 hours and then ejected the disc from my console. The fishing in Final Fantasy XV is surprisingly deep with a lot of the vendors supporting what you could call a fishing road trip. In the game it is extremely dangerous to be out at night so I would plan day trips to lakes to maximize the amount of fishing I would get to do. I would prepare days in advance to make sure I could afford the trip and that I had enough supplies to both protect myself at the lake and have enough supplies to last the whole day. Final Fantasy XV really is a game about getting really distracted and fishing is probably its best distraction. My days on the lake were the perfect balance of peaceful and rewarding, this game offers an awesome reward of well planned trips and a good haul of fish.
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy XIV Online
Final Fantasy XIV is the only game I have ever played where the fishing played exactly like its combat. When you are fighting enemies in a dungeon in FFXIV you are constantly adding buffs, landing hits, using consumables, and managing resource bars. When you are fishing in FFXIV you are constantly adding buffs, landing hits, using consumables, and managing resource bars. Note you are doing so at a much more leisurely and less life threatening pace but you are still doing it. I never maxed out the fisher class but I got it into the expansion content which was a really long and relaxing experience. Yet another Final Fantasy title where the real meat of the game is in getting distracted. When you fish you also sell on a player market that fluctuates based on market price just like real fish. You get the relaxing fishing side of the game and also an aggressive economic number crunching side as well. I spent way too long with a real pen and paper deciding how much I should sell for on any particular day and bossing around my two cat girl employees. The MMO aspect of the game adds so much to what you would expect to be a very solitary experience.
Tumblr media
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Have you ever gone fishing for hours to receive an empty bottle? That is exactly what kick started my addiction to fishing in Twilight Princess. An empty bottle in Twilight Princess means another way to heal yourself, another way to add oil to a lantern, another way to carry useless water around. The only way to get the 4th bottle in the game is to go to a dedicated fishing spot and fish until you pulled it out of the pond. The actual fishing is pretty weird, it involves motion controls which I still am not entirely sure what they do or how to properly use them but it is really fun to hold the pole in gyroscope and set the lure in the water waiting for fish to come get a nibble. Although the physics with the water make it difficult to see if you have actually gotten a bite or not it still is enjoyable the other 85% of the time it works.
Tumblr media
Stardew Valley
So this one is at the top of every other “fishing in games” list and there is a big reason for that. It’s really good. I think in my first Stardew Valley farm I gave up farming entirely and fished all day every day and stopped to buy food to replenish my energy and go back at it. I really didn’t care about getting rich or making enough money to expand the farm or get to know everyone I actually spent about 50 hours just fishing. The fishing takes some skill and a pretty keen eye but the random jerks of the fish and the rhythm of the game play are so fun to try to master. It’s a part of Stardew Valley that I felt like I was continuously improving on as time went on and it was really fun. I mean I don’t recommend it because you’ll end up moderately poor but it was really fun.
Tumblr media
Fantasy Life
Fantasy Life offers you 12 potential jobs, you could be a brilliant blacksmith or a devious potions maker, a lumberjack or a knight, a hunter or a seamstress. However your inner dad is calling and you decide you want to play through a fantasy RPG as a fisherman, hell yeah. the story is relatively short so you can quickly unlock a lot of locales to fish at and there is a manageable economy system that lets you deal in fish in advantageous ways. You can even pick up cooking on the side and make fancy dinners and sell the fish for higher you can do that as well. Fantasy Life is like a clever mix between Animal Crossing and Final Fantasy XIV and it kind of succeeds and falls short of it. The fishing also takes a good amount of skill and rhythmic approach to master so it doesn’t get boring almost at all until you have cleared the game.
Tumblr media
Maple Story 2
Maple Story 2 is one of the most expressive and cutest games that I have ever played. And the fishing is no different, its all about style. The fishing in Maple Story 2 is monotonous and can get old but you do it for the chibi clout. Because much like the rest of the game you can look however you want and do whatever you want and sometimes you just feel like kicking back and throwing lure in the water at the beach. I never got super into the fishing in this game but it won me over with its adorable design and stylish atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Animal Crossing Series
Of course I had to include the most popular game right now. Animal Crossing has become something of a connection between people when we can’t leave the house. A thing we all have in common on social media and with our friends. My first experience with Animal Crossing really starts with New Horizons and I was completely blown away. The fishing isn’t super complex or difficult but the range of what you can pull out of the water and what you can do with it is absolutely breathtaking. For a game about cartoon people living with humanoid cartoon animals the fish looking photo realistic. And the museum where they can be kept is stunning. The museum looks like it was designed to capture the feel of being in a museum and matches the design of all the great real life aquariums and observatories. Although it is a bit frustrating when your rod breaks it is easy enough to make one (or worst case buy one) to get your bait back in the water.
Tumblr media
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Tell me I’m wrong, you can’t. Isabelle getting added to Smash brought a very powerful fishing move that isn’t practical all the time but is really funny. Wouldn’t recommend this game if you are looking to relax and fish but I do recommend hooking your friend with a fish hook and send them flying off screen if you had to.
Tumblr media
Minecraft
I have a very special role in Minecraft when I join a friends server. A role that I assign to myself. While everyone is off getting awesome swords, spelunking for diamonds, and exploring the infinite landscape, I build a small wooden shack and I set up a farm with an irrigation canal and start fishing. A steady supply of food is necessary and while I’m hanging out with my friends in a server I’m happy to be the one to provide it. The fishing in this game is probably the slowest of all the ones on this list but is the most useful. just throwing the fish in the oven creates food that can help keep you and your companions alive for a long time. I think I definitely have my limits with Minecraft fishing and I couldn’t do it for hours on end it is rewarding to set up shop and find a nice place to settle down for a few hours to fish.
Tumblr media
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
This is the only Tactical RPG in this post. Fire Emblem: Three Houses has sections between combat where you can go and talk to your students and do other activities. We aren’t here to discuss other activities though we are here for the fishing. The fishing allows you to catch fish for some reason that I’m sure is good but never intrigued me enough to learn. All I know about the fishing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses is that it’s fun. I started to bust through combat just so that I could get back to fishing. The funniest part about this one is that the fish has a health bar. Pressing the A button at the exact moment finds a way to become easier and still find ways to mess you up. Either way, I’m not that interested in tactical RPGs but I heard there was fishing in this game so I had to play it and it was worth it.
Tumblr media
Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
In Jak & Daxter, Daxter gets turned into a small animal by dark eco while exploring a dangerous island off the shore of his home with his best friend Jak. To get back to the island to investigate, the pair have to borrow a boat owned by a fisherman who is troubled by an invasive species of poisonous eel that is ruining his haul. He asks Jak to catch fish for him without catching any eels. This fishing mini game can only be done once but it is going to either be something you think is very unique or a huge waste of time. All I’ll say is that the sound that the fish makes when it goes into the net is absolutely a reward in itself it is so satisfying. But anyways, more intense than some other options here but get it done so you can get back to absorbing eco powers and jumping on stuff.
Tumblr media
Shovel Knight
Shovel Knight is a 2D action platformer but you can also fish. And you fish for the best kind of fish, money. You can get some other stuff too like health pickups and magic replenishers but we know what you want. You see that little glint and you pop out the fishing rod and pull out those money bags. If you are devoted enough you can even get a surprise from the Troupple King (long live his highness) if you fish out the right stuff. I don’t even know if I fished all that much when I played Shovel Knight but it’s hilarious that you can.
Tumblr media
NieR: Automata
I did not play a lot of NieR and that’s because I was fishing. I don’t know why all I did was fish but you throw your little robot in the pond and you lean on a magical stool so honestly it was good enough for me.
Tumblr media
Club Penguin
If you know then you know. In hind sight there really wasn’t a whole lot to do in Club Penguin but this mini game really messed me up. You basically get to move up and down, catching fish and avoiding trash and other hazards. Basically trying to do this and catch as much fish as possible to avoid having to ask your parents for real money to pay for snacks to feed a virtual ball of fluff with eyeballs. I don’t really remember how challenging it really was but I remember getting decently high scores to about like 100 fish per round so I guess it was pretty easy if I could do that at age 10.
Tumblr media
Rune Factory 4
I’m gonna be very honest about this one and say that the fishing in Rune Factory 4 is basically just Animal Crossing fishing but more anime. The fish react to the pole the same, the fish almost look the same, and the buttons to respond are the same. What makes this one special is where you can take it. You can fish in the little moat in town, in the lake, in a dungeon full of monsters, in a lake that is eternally the season fall, anywhere. You are constricted by the boundaries of Stardew Valley and that is how much energy you have and how much time you have in the day. It’s still fun to fish but I wish that they had used their fun fantasy setting to give the ability to fish up some cool made up fish instead of strictly things that exist in real life.
Tumblr media
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Ok, diving, fishing, same thing. Diving in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is just fishing with your whole body. It works a lot in the same way as Pokemon where you fish up monsters to fight and get the rewards from them. It is a completely optional activity however if you decide to undertake the grind of scavenging in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 then you will never hurt for money ever again. It makes my wonder why Rex stopped being a salvager to do odd jobs because this was PROFITABLE. The main incentive is that there are spots that spawn a certain enemy that drop cores. Cores are like gacha or loot boxes that contain new anime girl partners that deal huge damage in fights. They even have their own side quests and story lines. I spent maybe 30 hours grinding before giving up on this game and while it does become tiresome I really enjoyed the random rewards of possibly getting a new companion or a really cool weapon.
It’s been tossed around that every great RPG has fishing in it. I won’t argue that point but a lot of great RPGs certainly do have fishing in them. Everyone needs a break sometimes and fishing is the perfect activity to remind us to stop and take that break. Even games can get long and without these distractions it might be so much harder to complete these harrowing tasks. Don’t forget to take breaks and just enjoy the sound of the water every once in a while because there’s no rush playing video games.
Honorable Mentions:
Kingdom Hearts: Sora fishing with his bare hands on Destiny Island
Persona 4: Weird aqueduct fishing
Persona 5: Marina fishing life
Sea of Thieves: A pirates life for me

hi gamers im pretty much finished with my playthrough of pokemon shining pearl, i have about 80 hours on there right now so heres my review!
i dont normally post game reviews but since many of you know me as that sinnoh loving guy i figured reviewing a game i wanted for such a long time, a remake of one of my fav generation's pokemon games would make sense, and its easier to post that kind of thing on tumblr so here it goes. also this whole review is spoiler-free.
summary - i really like this game and i recommend it to anyone who loves diamond and pearl or has interest in playing them for the first time! they fix a lot of issues with the originals however there are many missed opportunities thatll talk about under the cut. this game is a good return to form of the adventure that many of us older fans felt when we first played these games as kids. i do not want this to seem like a huge blow to these games but they are not without flaws either.
graphics:
I know the chibi art style was a huge miss by many fans when it was first shown off, but ive always found it cute and fitting of the game. in its final form, the graphics of bdsp are very charming and cute and the natural scenes and backgrounds are better than theyve ever been in a mainline title. this game really does feel like how we would have imagined it as kids! the top-down style works best for this type of game and its very polished. if you still arent sold on the style, i promise that if you just get into the game and start playing it for a bit itll convince you. also this game lacks screen tearing that the originals had (yay!) and the overworld is a lot nicer to look at color-wise.
music:
I have to say i was kind of worried about what they'd do with the music, because it is probably my favourite out of the whole series, but its actually breathtaking and many tracks are a million times better than they were before. they really emphasized the jazzy-ness of this game's music which i really appreciate haha. they even added some new tracks for the post-game area and also the DS sounds key item which is so so great.
new additions:
bdsp greatly expands on the underground feature by letting you catch pokemon down there! this is a feature i never knew we needed but now that we have it oh man i could never go back. its so fun hunting for pokemon down there and digging for statues. i do kinda wish there was more multiplayer stuff you could do down there, cos rn all you can do really is dig together, but honestly thats fine by me since i didnt even get to do That in the originals.
this game also changes how contests work compared to the original dppt. i do kind of miss being able to dress up your pokemon but i do have to wonder how that would even work in a 3d game. anyway i do like the new "rhythm game" approach to pokemon super contests. they are a lot faster to do than they were before so you can do more of them in less time. sometimes the old one felt like rng cos you had to perform moves to a judge and just kinda hope no one else picked the same judge as you. i havent done a whole lot of the new contests just yet but as of now it seems like a welcome change.
bdsp also introduce walking pokemon in the overworld in almost every area, when before you could only walk with a select few in amity square. i think walking pokemon is always a welcome addition but its a bit strange to me how it was done in bdsp. its a huge upgrade from sword and shield (dlc) though i have to say. it really kinda sucks in those games because your pokemon will run to catch up with you and constantly bump into you. they dont do that as often in bdsp but there are times where if you have a slower pokemon they will just never walk with you and are always teleporting about. i think hgss really mastered the walking pokemon because they were always at the same rhythm as you were, and it just seems very half-baked into every other game they've tried to add it into since. (except let's go....it's actually pretty good in let's go.)
also, its worth mentioning that the sinnoh games are no longer extremely slow. youve all seen the meme with blissey and close combat right? yeah that doesnt happen anymore, neither does saving a lot of data (rip), and you surf faster than a snail now.
but the biggest and best feature that bdsp added was the hidden moves app in the poketch. basically, you no longer need to teach a pokemon an hm move (a field move that cannot be forgotten under normal circumstances) you can just open your watch with the R button and use a hidden move from there. its extremely handy and id recommend these games over the originals just for this feature alone. dppt have the most hms required at once time out of the entire series and not having to worry about them anymore is a HUGE plus. you can also access your pc boxes out in the overworld too instead of having to go to a pokemon center, which is awesome.
missed opportunities:
ok, now as we get into some more negative parts I have to say, yes I am aware that this game was never supposed to be a platinum remake. its a faithful remake of diamond and pearl, it is exactly what it says on the tin. (i have to say this phrasing has bugged me since the start, though, it feels like an oxymoron. of course a remake is going to be faithful?) and you know, they did add some platinum dex mons into the game via the underground feature i mentioned earlier. but my issue is, why did they only add some of them and not all? why pick and choose which pokemon we can access when the entirety of the platinum dex IS IN the game? we already know about the rotom in the old chateau and the gift eevee from bebe so why not let us access those? they seem to be walled off for absolutely no reason. and there are still so many of gen 4's added evolutions that you just cannot access within the main story, such as gliscor that you have to wait til postgame for. there is no point to these restrictions so why have them? it was literally not like that in platinum, so why go back to it? and i also like some of the changes to the gym order and designs inside the gyms they did in platinum. but plat is my fav pokemon game of all time so of course i am biased in that regard.
i also have to say that not using platinum teams for trainers like flint and volkner was a missed opportunity too. i like that gym leaders added new moves and abilities onto their team members to keep the battles fresh, but why did we have to go back to these stinky teams when we did it right in platinum? it just seems like two steps forward, one step back to me.
and this is a pet peeve to me but....where is looker???? he hasn't been in gen 8 at all???? he was introduced in gen 4 so....why not bring him back now? and where is the battle frontier gamefreak i want answers.
as for the story, ORAS is one of my fav pokemon games and i love how they freshened up the hoenn region in that remake, and i would have loved for something similar in BDSP. they ended up not doing that and we still have a good game on our hands here with bdsp, but i do think it could have been even better. i think remakes should set out with the goal to transcend the originals and create a definitive version of that generation's game. i think bdsp fell a little bit flat in that regard. we still have legends arceus coming out in about a month though. I do think that this is going to be the game that transcends and im really excited for it! but i think bdsp could have been more too.
also, why did they go back to single use tms? who is responsible for this??? i need a word.
another peeve of mine is that they did not add any pokemon past gen 4. as a kid i desperately wanted to bring my gen 5 favs into sinnoh, so that was a huge blow. again, they should have done it like oras. i dont think anyone would have minded if most of the later-gen mons were post-game anyway. and im not going to mention megas much but i like them and they would have fit so well here ok bye
glitches and crunch:
if youve been following these games since launch you know that they come with their fair share of glitches. of course, most pokemon games do. they are known for it, really. and most of them, even in bdsp, dont really come into play during your actual playthough, you have to actually go out and initiate them, and many of them are being patched right now. however, this game was also released unfinished, with a day 1 patch being required to download in order to get all of the cutscenes, music, and more. now personally i dont agree with that practice...i grew up in the sticks with the worlds slowest wifi, and i was also the type of kid who wanted to play their new games on the ride home. if your game needs an internet connection to download half of your game, that's just annoying. i know that's just the way nowadays...other consoles do it all the time, when you buy a ps4 game on the disc you have to wait for it to download too. in the age of internet its easier to patch games. back when the gba games had a glitch in them (look up ruby and sapphire berry glitch) you had to send your game back or go to a special kiosk to fix it. now you can just leave your switch on at night to download the updates. so while i definitely disagree with this decision, i can see why they did it. i really hope that doesnt become a mainstay for pokemon games going forward. its a real hassle, and encourages the harsh deadlines that nintendo and gamefreak have in place to continue.
challenge level/difficulty:
this game has a....weird level curve in it. it uses the gen 7.5/gen 8 experience share, which means that every pokemon in your party gets experience after you defeat or catch a pokemon. you are not able to turn this off, but you can put pokemon into your pc boxes to stop this effect. anyway, the original games did not have this, and were not designed around it. Around the 3rd gym or so i really felt the effect of it. my team was really getting up there in levels, and it doesnt help that the 3rd and 4th gyms are the same levels, either. so yeah it was getting clear that i was overleveled and the gym leaders and boss fights started to get kinda easy. ok, you might say, of course they were, its a kids game and a game and one that ive played before. not everyone is going to have that experience. however, the pokemon in the underground scale to your badge level, meaning they are typically around your level or higher when you go down there after a gym battle. meaning. you are going to get your ass handed to you down there. but then...not by any of the trainers in the story? probably not until the elite four, who each have ev-trained pokemon (this means they have really beefed up stats that compliment what moves theyre gonna use) with competitive battling move-sets and items. and then the champion, who has a completely cracked competitive team with items on all 6 pokemon. now many of us were thinking that they would dumb down the champion battle, but they beefed it up so so much. as an adult player of the series i really do like this level of challenge. even if youre just doing a vanilla playthrough its bound to be a little difficult. i mean it took me 3 tries! and then if youre a kid playing this game....well its never been easier to grind in a pokemon game than in gen 8. so...i dont know what to say about this i just think the difficulty in this game is kind of lopsided at times.
should you play?
as a new player: yes! these games are more accessible than the og diamond and pearl, which go up WAY past the $60 msrp if you want a legit copy. and with the additions in quality of life i think they are definitely worth it. also, they have online play which the old ones dont anymore. you can emulate, sure, i won't stop you, but if you do emulate either dppt or bdsp you wont have the multiplayer aspect either way. multiplayer adds a lot of mileage to a pokemon game.
as a veteran player: yes! these games miss a lot of content from platinum and are basically the same story, i won't deny that. but they are full of nostalgia for if you love gen 4 and have felt like newer games have been missing the mark. and if you didnt like gen 4, a lot of its issues are solved here like the hm one. this is a good opportunity to give it another chance.

My Top Games of the Last Decade
The year 2020 is here, ushering in a new decade to live in. Instead of looking at the bad events that occurred over the years, I instead want to look at my favorite games over the last 10 years. It’s crazy that back in 2010, I was only in my second half of the fifth grade. Oh how young and naïve I was and an even worse gamer. Now in 2020, I am in the second semester of my second year of university, studying in the psychology field. I feel how I was raised over the last years shaped of how I am as a person and I am still learning, no one is perfect. Those developments shaped even the gamer I am now. Back when I was younger, I just liked games that were fun to play. But now I am a person who puts Character Development and Story before Gameplay. You will see this shift as the years go by.
Well let’s start with 2010. And I will try to limit how much I write each game to about a paragraph each. Don’t want to make this post too long. I can give a more detailed explanation at a future date if someone is interested.
PS. All the games are Nintendo Games. I’m only a Nintendo gamer so sorry if you don’t see like Persona 5 or Last of Us.
2010: Kirby’s Epic Yarn
Tumblr media
Gosh this game is too freaking cute for words. I remember the stories about how much I wanted this game when I was younger, even the embarrassing ones. While this game is easy even for Kirby standards, this game is so fun to play. The levels are enjoyable to play, you can get lost hours doing minigames and playing music (Frosty Wheel is still the best), and is just cute. This game is cute incarnate. And if you don't want to play the original version, you can play a port of it on the 3DS with even more goodies on it.
2011: Pokémon Black and White
Tumblr media
My favorite Pokémon games and generation even if I started with Pearl. Gen 5 of Pokémon is super special to me as I know it is for many others, being the first game I bought the day of release. I was also pretty blind in my playthrough, finding new discoveries as they came along and finding new Pokémon that I might have not liked at first but became my favorites. Pokémon like the Krookodile line, Emolga, the Leavanny line and so much more. The game also first brought to my attention to how characters can be written well and still is my favorite story in a mainline Pokémon game.
2012: Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure
Tumblr media
So I’m kinda cheating with this one since I didn’t play it until 2013 but damn it, I don’t care! This game is awesome. I am super terrible with rhythm games but this game is one that is very enjoyable with an excellent story and characters. Phantom R is such a cool guy that you just want to hang out with and go dancing with and not the fact he’s a gentleman. The rhythm minigames are mostly enjoyable and have a wide variety to play so you can't bored very easily (the gyroscope one can go die in a fire though). All I want to know is where is the damn sequel already Sega?! It’s been 8 freaking years with that teaser you showed at the ending of the game and no I don't count that bad IOS game you made a year later. We fans need our fix and answers now.
2013: Mario and Luigi Dream Team
Tumblr media
Bowser’s Inside Story will always be my favorite Mario and Luigi game but this game comes to a close second. As part of Year of Luigi, this game did not disappoint. Luigi is front and center and he is the best of the part of game, with his dream abilities and overall character. The story is also very good with the adventures the bro’s have on Pi’illo Island and the soundtrack of the game is my video game soundtrack of all time. There is also the fact that giant battles return and if anyone knows me, knows I love me those giants <3
I also have two honorable mentions for 2013 that I will give a brief note while I like them
Fire Emblem Awakening
Tumblr media
First Fire Emblem game, got me in the series. Characters are great and story left me generally shocked at points. Make a yearly tradition to one playthrough each year
Super Mario 3D World
Tumblr media
Favorite Mario platformer, Peach being playable and being a cat. Yes please
2014: Kirby Triple Deluxe
Tumblr media
I freaking love Kirby games :D Triple Deluxe was the first Kirby game on the 3DS, using an engine that looks beautiful on the 3DS that was used for the next game they did. The game is super colorful with its vibrate worlds and use of pastel colors. The new abilities is super fun to play with as well, Archer being my favorite. Supernova is also a neat gimmick for the game and glad it was present in many of the levels and used in new ways to solve puzzles.
2015: Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle
Tumblr media
Surprise! I said favorite games of the decade and mobile games count. This game means so much to me, being the one of the mobile games I keep track of everyday, even looking at what the JP version gets. I am proud of my account and how far it has come over these past years. Though I was not there right when it released, it has felt like that long as I have had my account for over 4 years now and don’t plan to quit now. One day I will have my full husband team, just you watch <3
2016: Dragon Ball Fusions
Tumblr media
This game was my answer to a playable Dragon Ball RPG to play on Nintendo consoles (before Xenoverse 2 got ported over on the Switch). The chibi artstyle gave this game its own identify from other games like it. The gameplay was fun as you can make your own character and fly all across the world fighting characters from the Dragon Ball timeline. The game is all about the fusion mechanic, but with an expanded roster of characters to fuse and the ability to fuse your favorites is a blast.
Brief Honorable Mention to Pokémon Sun and Moon for a fun region to explore, new pokemon to love and pretty good story.
Tumblr media
(Lillie is so precious for this world I swear. And Snowy as well :D))
2017: Miitopia
Tumblr media
A lot of people would write off this game as a simple Mii game, but it is so much more than that. This game has much more personality than one might think, with its class system, characters even when you chose who is what role and the story as well. The story and characters allows many possibilities of ideas for stories and art for creators to make and enjoy, as this game and Tomodachi Life was used as a template for a rp that me and my bf do. And this game can get hard, like wanting to rage quit hard, so be prepared for grinding. The OST is also a charm of the game, being one of my favorite OSTs ever.
Like with 2013, I have two honorable mentions that I will give a short comment on.
Splatoon 2
Tumblr media
Love it more than the original, Aerospray is still the master race and Off The Hook is better than Squid Sisters, don’ t @ me XD
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Tumblr media
Amazing story, characters and unique experience from other games I have played. Berkut x Rinea OTP
2018: Dragon Ball FighterZ
Tumblr media
As much as I like the Super Smash Bros games, I was more excited for this game to come out. I was glad it did come to Switch so I can play it. FighterZ was my first proper fighting game with button inputs and it threw me for a loop, but eventually I got the hang of it and is still learning. The story is a fun experience if you don’t think too much about it, me loving Android 21. And of course I main my husband that is in the gif above <3
2019: Pokémon Sword/Shield and Super Dragon Ball Heroes World Mission (That’s right, a tie)
Tumblr media
I was excited for SwSh since day 1 and was not disappointed even with the dex cuts. The Wild Area has been a blast exploring, finding all the new raid Pokémon to catch and train. The new Pokémon are super fun to use, some of my favorites being Ponyta, Scorebunny and Dreepy. My baby Eevee also got a GMax form and she is super freaking fluffy, big and I want to hug her <3 I’m excited for the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC when they come out.
Tumblr media
This game was huge to us USA fans of the series as this was the first time we ever got anything DB Heroes related here. The cards were fun to make teams with and make even custom cards. It was a full experience without to play the irl game, which would still be fun. Though the game is slow to add updates, I will be waiting for what will be coming. I am glad the game came out so we can finally enjoy all of what the game has to offer. (Though I played the previous game in the series being Ultimate Mission X through Citra, so I got a headstart XD)
This is it for this post. Even though I am late at posting it, better late than never. If anyone is interested, I’m glad to give more detailed descriptions. I realize I have to do better at explain my opinions in a more detailed matter.
Thank you so much for reading :D

So I’ve been having really intense dreams almost nightly for the past week, and then forgetting to document them, so here’s a shit ton.
May 4th
There was something about playing video games at some random girl’s house, but the details have since grown hazy.
And then I was five years old again. There was a magic school bus that would take you to different dimensions. The first trip we took, I was with an asthmatic boy who reminded me of Mikey from The Goonies, or my childhood best guy friend, or maybe a combination of the two. The bus took us to this pink mountain range, kind of like the one time space Kaguya sends Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi during that fight arc in Shippuden. Another person joined us for the second trip, but I can’t remember where we went. The third time was the most memorable and the most haunting, though. We were on a field trip to some pavilion, and I had flashbacks to when I was a kid and we visited the Indian River Lagoon. Me and this boy and three other kids snuck off to the bus, or maybe it was four other kids so that the math I present next will add up, because when we got to the bus it turned out it had a capacity of only five. We tried to pile inside but it was like the bus knew how many kids were inside of it and the boy was automatically, magically outside somehow. Our teacher was Steve from Blue’s Clues and when he noticed what we were doing, he started to gradually lose his mind. He panicked when he saw us all on the bus, and then the bus started slowly moving through the parking lot, and then it began to shake as if revving up for interdimensional travel. By this point, he had sprinted across the parking lot and was outside screaming “OPEN THE DOOR! OH MY GOD, OPEN THE DOOR! OPEN THE GODDAMN DOOR!” banging on the door and the windows and just overall losing his goddamn mind. And then one of the windows shattered and broke the bus’s magic, effectively stopping us all. I don’t remember what became of us afterward.
May 5th
My boyfriend and I were in what was supposed to be the guest bedroom at my grandmother’s house. There was a mattress on the floor and a window at the furthest end of the back wall right next to the corner, and the view outside was that of a street. My boyfriend and I were sitting on the floor hanging out when a black man on a cell phone shows up a little too close to the outside window, and he looked sketchy just by the way he was dressed and presenting himself (almost like he was homeless), and I had no idea what he was doing there so I start to panic. I tell my boyfriend to get down so he can’t see us and we do. And then outside, another man shows up, an older white man with long greasy gray hair. He’s carrying what I’m assuming is a machine gun. He starts shooting. The bullets break the glass and start coming through the window. I’m assuming he likely killed the black man. My heart is racing and I know if we stay where we are, we’re going to die so I grab my boyfriend’s hand and race to the bedroom door but it was shut (it always was). I’m standing there trying to turn the knob as the bullets rain in but I’m freaking out and my palms are probably sweaty and my anxiety is getting the best of me and I can’t fucking get it to turn so I basically have to tell myself to calm the fuck down and concentrate and I eventually do finally get the door open.
This dream then fades into something about an old dream I had once about my grandmother’s master bathroom being connected to the guest bathroom by way of a door or a closet or something like that.
And then that transitioned into a really weird dream about walking to school. It was the same school that has appeared in my dreams many times before, some strange take on my high school that I’ve never seen in real life before. But anyways, I was walking through this neighborhood with the intention of getting to campus, only to soon realize I was being followed. Behind me was this nerdy girl with mousy brown hair, long and parted down the middle, and glasses, and her nose constantly stuck in a book. She had this very plain look about her, no makeup, not necessarily pretty but not ugly either. She kind of reminded me of a girl I knew back in middle school. But anyway, her presence only made me that much more nervous about all of this seeing as I had no real grasp of where the fuck I was going. At one point, when I was in what looked like an empty town square (there was a brick office building about three or four stories tall that kind of reminds me of downtown where I live currently), we ran into another group of students who were also walking to school. They were being led by who I can only assume was my most recent French teacher. She called after the nerdy brunette following me to tell her that she was going the wrong way and had to turn down the next street, therefore passive-aggressively telling me that I, too, was basically going the wrong way. I was left with an overall overwhelming sense of panic and frustration feeling as if I was completely lost and incompetent.
May 7th
I was on this weird, giant cruise ship, the inside of which resembled this mall that I kind of recognize appeared in a different dream from a while back. There was this princess procession, mainly girls dressed like Belle first, that I of course took great interest in. As it turned out, it was part of an audition for a local party princess company. Afterward, all of the girls auditioning left this little shop that the company was based out of. I was standing outside. One of the people who leaves the shop is Cory Nation who, if you’re active on TikTok most likely, posts a lot of Disney cosplay vids on there. So he’s standing outside this little shop as all of the other girls auditioning are leaving and I guess mistakes me for one of them as he comes over to me to tell me how I had done such a good job. I feel kind of awkward about it knowing full well I was not among these girls, and feel as I don’t deserve the compliment, but I don’t say anything about it. Later on, I end up going swimming with him and some others and we’re all in the ocean in full on mermaid tails swimming alongside this sidewalk that looks like a pool deck with lots of greenery in the background. On our way back afterward, I run into my mother who I guess at this point I hadn’t seen in a while and so I start walking along with her. She asked me if I had seen my wealthy aunt at all on the trip and I said no. Then just then as we turn the corner on the pool deck, there she is sitting in a lounger. The last thing I want is to get into a conversation with her, so to avoid the confrontation, I grab my mom by the wrist and start running, dodging other people and whipping around corners just to get away from this woman. Running leads us into this weird Alice in Wonderland type maze thing—I just remember finding our way into a small room made out of ivy-laced black wrought iron fencing that had this diorama windows inside like the ones you find on Main Street in Magic Kingdom. One of them was really bizarre, displaying something like a bunch of chibi Lumieres dressed like Belle? I don’t know, it was weird as fuck.
May 9th
The first dream was brief and kind of boring but I was at a bar and ran into my elementary school crush, who started flirting with me, and it was overall just very weird.
The second dream returned me to my childhood best friend’s house for some birthday party. I remember some sort of mermaid theme. Anyways, my childhood best friend and I haven’t spoken since middle school but we follow each other on social media so I see all of her shit and everything that goes on in her life. Everything about both of our lives at this point is completely separate, and that really shone through in this dream. I was back in this house that, as a child, I had considered a second home, but I was surrounded by people I didn’t know and I just overall felt very awkward and like I didn’t belng there. It was really jarring, especially scrolling through social media the next day and seeing a lot of posts from her.
May 10th
The first dream had me back in my creative writing class at my community college, or at least a version of it. I had forgotten my book. I remember sitting there only half-listening to the teacher as I tried to devise a plan to sneak out of the room with the smaller backpack that was inside my bigger backpack so I could get my book unnoticed. I excused myself to the bathroom. I remember slightly panicking inside a cramped stall as I reorganized my clothes-- I had a hoodie that I slipped on and a button down that I tied around my waist. I forget the rest.
The second dream was the most vivid and perhaps the most unnerving/surreal. I was in what was supposed to my grandmother’s neighbor’s house. This was based on my grandmother’s real life next door neighbor, a woman we’ll call Dolly, who died a couple months ago. She loved puzzles and her house always smelled kind of musty. When I was a kid, she bought me my first Webkinz, an elephant. But besides all that, in my dream I was in what was meant to be an iteration of her house. It was one of those sweeping two story homes that you’d expect an old person to live in. It was me, my grandmother, my parents, and a few other people (all anime characters: a knight with long blue hair in a ponytail, and his daughter who had matching blue hair and a dress, and then Jessie and James from Pokemon and their two canonically non-existent children) who were there, and the house was empty. Dolly, in the dream, had just recently died and I guess we were there to help clean out her things. There was a lot of dust and cat hair (even though she doesn’t have a cat) clinging to the staircase so I took it upon myself to wipe it all down. As I was cleaning, I came across what I had thought was a clump of dust sticking out from underneath one of the stair boards, so I forced it up to pull it out only to find Dolly’s lifeless, disembodied head. So of course I start freaking out, calling for everyone to come take a look at this shit. My mom almost immediately turned back around on the verge of vomiting. My grandmother lost her shit. My dad just kind of stood there calm as he could be and was just kind of like “Well that’s intense.” And the anime gang (save for the little girl, who was not there) kind of exchanged looks and then ultimately decided they could not do this and that they needed to leave. Then the scene switched and we were all outside. The backyard was a makeshift cemetery where patches of dead grass shaped like Christian crosses indicated where the dead were buried. A weird game was ensuing where there were two teams of three people, each run by an old man coach, and the goal was to see how many points each team could rack up by having people take turns kicking golf balls across a field. I was on a team with my boyfriend, who was a soccer player in the past so I remember thinking to myself “He’s got this,” with our captain an old stout man with a plaid newsboy hat on. He was probably from the UK somewhere, I’m thinking Scotland. The other team was led by a rather crotchety old man in a suit, and I don’t remember any of the other members except for a little baby no older than two. The baby was the one I was up against. I gave a decent kick of the golf ball, and then it was the baby’s turn to go but she just kind of waddled around off in her own world, so the crotchety old man took matters into his own hands. He picked up the golf ball and launched it across the field on his own, which made the Scotsman incredibly angry. He started fuming, grabbing a shovel and threatening to dig up one of the corpses, I’m assuming Dolly. Chaos ensued. Everyone started running around and screaming “Don’t do that!” And then next thing I know, I’m on the ground staring into a hole where a corpse had been buried, and all along the dirt wall leading downward were tiny doors in dark muted colors with gold plated numbers, like apartment doors for a dollhouse. And then the next scene saw us all sitting around the staircase staring at this disembodied head, which we had quickly discovered was fake. A hyper-realistic rubber head. Someone, maybe it was myself, made a comment about “Well, you know Dolly and her dolls.” Someone else demonstrated the way you could see the cross-section of the different layers where the neck was, and how you could take the head apart to study each layer. For the last scene, I was outside of my own body watching from afar as the anime group trekked past the house at a great distance through deep snow, feeling unresolved and yet as if they did what they had needed to do. The little blue haired girl, the knight’s daughter, suspected nothing, but everyone else was relatively forlorn.

Skyla (Anniversary 2022)
Haven't done one of these chibis in a while but since I started playing Pokemon Masters again (thanks, new phone) and got Skyla's Anniversary outfit, I figured I'd make a new one.

Moekuri
Alright, so by nobody’s popular request. Moekuri: Adorable Tactical SRPG.
It’s an interesting kind of game. You start out being able to choose a classification for your own character, and after that you’re basically unleashed upon the world to become the pokemon-master a summoner.
You catch monsters, you train monsters, but most importantly: you customize your team of summoned monsters into an unstoppable force of perfect synergy.
As a summoner, depending on what specialization you picked at the start, you will learn new abilities and skills as you level (abilities and skills that you can pick and choose from). Your monsters will learn new skills but no new abilities.
The monsters have different abilities, different elemental types, different skills, and wildly different ways to be utilized by a summoner.
The strategic aspect of this game are really quite top-notch, even if the camera (and the inability to play full-screen) could do with some work.
Now, having said that? Moekuri is a game designed around much the same idea as the pokemon-mod “Moemon”. AKA, the monsters you capture are cute girls, and together you shall emerge victorious.
As such, there’s an expected level of lewdness in imagery that I’m not going to argue against (and will not be bringing up here). Whether the cute girl is barely dressed or wearing full combat-armor, at the end of the day it’s a cute girl and as such thematically appropriate.
Going from there however, we run into my first real problem with the monsters.
They’re horrifically inconsistent. Not just in drawing-style (which is fair enough, I feel like they might’ve lost a lot of their budget trying to commission 150 artworks for characters that the player might never even see), but in character-design.
First off, as a disclaimer: I’m not an artist, I’m a writer and haven’t really tried drawing in literally a decade. The fact that I’m still noticing a clear difference should be a worrying sign, but again I’m not an absolute authority on the subject of drawing cute monster girls.
So, let’s start off with an example of a really good one.
Tumblr media
The Skeleton. The drawing-style is a bit awkward, and I sympathize profoundly with its hand, but as far as design is concerned? This one is brilliant. The white shawl-thing that reminds us of the ribs, the zipper for the spine, the white stocking-holding-things reminding us of the skeleton’s thigh-bones. And it’s shown to stand underneath a starlit sky, implying some form of darkness (which is its element).
The chibi-version in the corner is what it looks like on the field, and thanks to the very solid design-choices it’s a very non-cluttered and very elegant kind of picture.
Overall? It’s a very well thought-out design, and I’m very much enjoying it.
Compare this to the raijuu.
Tumblr media
The Raijuu. Again, the drawing style is a bit awkward, mainly in the proportions. Still not a terrible image, and with an elegant kind of design that translates well into the chibi-format.
However, there’s nothing in this image that implies anything whatsoever related to the girl being a raijuu, other than the fact that that’s what it’s called.
A raijuu is a beast that descends from the sky in the form of lightning. Generally it’s assumed to be a wolf-like creature, sometimes with some form of wings (which the hair-clip might be referencing). Certainly, the long ponytail of the girl could be related to the long tail of a raijuu, but it could also be implying a lot of other things, and feels very much like a stretch.
So there’s no signs of this girl being either a raijuu (a wolf-like beast related to lightning), or to give her any kind of signature towards lightning (which is her element). So despite of how very streamlined and elegant the final chibi-version ends up looking, the lack of signature design leaves it unable to capture any kind of “raijuu“-like spirit.
I could bring up more of these clear issues with character-design (there’s 150 pictures, that’s a lot of room for mistakes), but I’m going to settle for one more.
Tumblr media
The Selkie. Which is something like a seal-mermaid in legends, where fishermen steal their pelts and force them to remain with them forever on land. There’s again some signs towards an inexperienced artist being the creator, but the chibi-version comes together in a fairly uncomplicated manner.
I’m... not even going to try to figure out how this particular design was thought of, considering what she’s supposed to be, because I have no idea. Though I will applaud the fact that we can see an iceberg in the background, clearly implying her element to be ice (which it is).
A lot of it can probably be summed up to the game being Japanese in origin, meaning that the artists are Japanese as well, something which likely limits them rather thoroughly in figuring out what they’ve been asked to draw.
(It’s admittedly also a possibility that this fault lies at the feet of the translators, but I kind of doubt it.)
Tumblr media
The Naiad. A somewhat obscure creature of Greek mythology, they’re water-nymphs who frequent small fountains, wells, and springs.
Now, knowing the origin of the name, it becomes somewhat obvious that the background includes reflections of sunlight across water. But it’s an extremely tiny portion of it, and she doesn’t exactly look otherwise water-implying beyond the fact that she’s wearing a blue shirt and ribbons.
As a result of this, the chibi-version again doesn’t really manage to capture any kind of “naiad“-like spirit, though considering how human-like nymphs are supposed to be, I won’t argue about it.
In comparison, we can see how blatantly obvious it can be when the artist knows what they’re drawing.
Tumblr media
The Tengu. A crow-person and an omen for bad weather, usually depicted with a big nose.
Even missing the big nose, she’s wearing clothing that’s generally seen in tengu-related artwork, has crow-wings, and is swinging around fans that’s creating an obvious wind.
The chibi-version ends up looking a little bit cluttered thanks to the red-white stripes on the rope tying her hat under her chin, combined with all of the other minor details.
So, interestingly enough, the very detailed and obviously accurate depiction of a “cute tengu” is hindered in it’s “chibi-version” by that very same attention to detail.
There’s another example of knowing what they’re drawing though.
Tumblr media
The Sphinx. A winged lion with a human face, generally associated with Egyptian mythology, though it often makes an appearance in Greek myths.
Excellent design, VERY well-executed drawing-style. The wings are there, the cat-like eyes, the lion’s tail and ears, the Egyptian jewelry and haircut. On top of that, the background is filled with bricks and faded-out browns, easily implying that her element is earth (which it is).
Despite this attention to detail, it still remains remarkably uncluttered in chibi-version, thanks in large part to the choice of very smoothly blending colors and large “blank“ areas of only a single color.
If every monster was like the sphinx, I would’ve ended up feeling guilty over buying Moekuri on a sale. It’s amazing.
Still, this isn’t so bad. A few monsters are well-made, a few of them not-so-well-made. Why is this causing me to rant about it?
Tumblr media
The Peri. A winged spirit, known for its beauty, from Persian mythology.
It’s well-drawn, the design is consistent with what it’s supposed to depict, and the chibi-version isn’t too horribly cluttered.
In the game, it’s a fire-creature and the red background and bright lights can be seen as hinting towards that.
Pay attention to the saturation of that image.
Tumblr media
The Kou. Supposedly somehow related to the Qilin (either too obscure, or too badly translated for me to find anything about it).
This is a fire-creature.
As you can see, with the two fire-creature side-by-side, there’s just this... blatant lack of “these two things belong together“, despite how they share an element.
The extreme differences in saturation just makes it all the more blatantly obvious that the artists likely had very little in terms of oversight/guidance in finding a common theme. And it just kind of... pisses me off a little bit.
Mainly because in any work you do, you kind of need to gather everything together so that it all meshes well together. And despite how solid the strategical parts of the game is, when it comes to character-design, sometimes this game really falls flat (despite how it’s literally designed entirely around the idea of capturing and surrounding yourself with cute girls and emerging victorious from countless battles).
(I’m still not clear if they tracked down artists for stuff they’d already made, or if they commissioned the art from the get-go, and I must admit to some curiosity on that side of things.)

Android games to look forward to in 2018
We wouldn’t be very good to you if we didn’t give you a great list of games you need to be expecting in 2018. And we want to be good to you, so join us as we try to hype up your 2018 Android gaming prospects with this list. Some of these games are set to launch before the year ends, so you may see one or two of these titles arrive in a few days’ time. Some of these are in the pipeline for a 2018 launch. Get excited with us for these.
Check age of empires 3 cheats.
Star Wars: Rise to Power
With the release of a new feature film, you will never lack for Star Wars games in the Play Store. Here’s another one coming your way – Star Wars: Rise to Power is a strategy game set in the Star Wars universe. Players will get to influence who will control the galaxy by choosing a faction, establishing their base and building a fleet. You can imagine the battles that will rage on, and ultimately players will decide if the controlling power is the Empire or the New Republic. Are you interested yet?
One Piece Thousand Storm
This is an RPG game based on the popular anime One Piece. We don’t know much about the game, only that it will feature all the fan favorites and Straw Hat Pirates from the “2 Years Ago” and “New World” story arcs. The gameplay is reportedly 3v3 team battles with RPG elements. The game was set for a late 2017 launch, so this could hit the market any time soon.
Tekken Mobile
They only had to mention Tekken and we’re going to get on that train. Whatever needs to be done to be able to experience a true blue Tekken fighting game on mobile, we hope that Bandai Namco does it. The game is crazy popular on consoles, and it will blow up like crazy if Bandai Namco is finally able to bring this to mobile. We’re hoping that the game becomes very accessible and that the controls will reflect the combo fighting elements of Tekken.
Runescape Mobile
The game that started the MMORPG trend, the game that most MMORPG players have played at one point or another, is set to have a mobile client. That would have been difficult to imagine a few years back, but Jagex is going to give us a cross-platform Runescape that will allow players to bring along the game on their mobile phones. This game is set for a 2018 launch, and we can’t wait to see how it fares with hardcore Runescape players.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite
Potterheads will be excited to know that the Harry Potter universe will be getting a number of official games soon, one of them is Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, an augmented reality game. This game is being built by Niantic, makers of hit AR games Pokemon GO and Ingress. By the looks of it, players will explore real-world neighborhoods and cities to go on quests, learn and cast spells, discover mysterious artifacts, and encounter legendary beasts. It already sounds massive.
Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition
If you loved Final Fantasy XV on the console, you’ll probably love the idea of being able to play the game on your mobile as well. Cute chibi versions of Noctis and co. will take over from their highly-rendered 3D versions, and it looks like the whole game will be ported to mobile, in cute chibi version. Square Enix has probably made another home run with this game, which everybody will want on their phones.
My Tamagotchi Forever
If you’re of the right age, you will know what a Tamagotchi is and how big the craze was before. I even had a friend who shed real life tears for her dead Tamagotchi (she forgot to feed it, you see). A Tamagotchi is a digital pet, and My Tamagotchi Forever looks to bring that same experience to mobile. Will we have another generation of kids who are forever minding their digital pets? Let’s wait and see.
Battle Breakers
If you’re into the hack-and-slash, action RPG genre, then you should wait for Battle Breakers. This upcoming action RPG from Epic Games is being designed for Unreal Engine 4, so you will expect the graphics to be great. The game gives a vibrant sci-fi cartoon vibe, and Battle Breakers will let players recruit hundreds of unique heroes for their teams. You will need to battle monsters from space, and to do so, you will need to master the elements and defeat your enemies with strategy. If this is your type of game, watch out for it in 2018.
Tumblestone
From the Quantum Astrophysicists Guild – makers of popular game “The Bridge” – comes another puzzle game that would probably catch the attention of the casual gamers out there. This is an already popular game on console and other platforms for Nintendo, so people already know about this. The game will have a multiplayer mode where you can play with your friends. The puzzles will get progressively more difficult as levels advance, so let’s see who catches the puzzle fever with this game.
Hyper Sentinel
This upcoming shooter by Huey Games is a call back to old school arcade shoot ‘em ups that you used to love. The great thing about this is that it is rendered in gorgeous 4K graphics, with awesome power-ups, and epic boss battles. If these are the type of games that interest you, then Hyper Sentinel is surely one you should watch out for.
