i’m going to go on a small rant about dragon ball super Goku

so the first ever dragon ball show i watched was dragon ball super cause at that time all i had was a school chromebook and an illegal website (😭) which had very limited anime to watch.

they only had dragon ball super. no dragon ball, dragon ball z or gt. so yeah, i started off getting into the dbz fandom by watching the worst series in the entire franchise (according to other people)

at the beginning i was super confused, like, “what?? he has a son? a wife?? two sons?? am i missing something?” but i pushed through and i absolutely fell in love with dbs.

it was that series that got me into dragon ball and everything, and i have a huge amount of respect towards it. it has some pretty good arcs, especially the TOP arc. but as i went back towards the beginning, watched og db and dbz, i started to realize that dbz Goku was not the same as dbs Goku.

Goku. isn’t. stupid.

well yeah, he’s still kinda dumb (and i find that absolutely adorable), but not to the point where he doesn’t understand the most basic concepts of anything that isn’t fighting.

i refuse to believe that his level of understanding is that of like a 5 year old toddler.

so to make super a bit more bearable, i have a little headcanon.

Goku just acts dumb because he finds everyone’s reactions hilarious.

like in ep 42, where Beerus disguises himself as Monaka (probably filler but still), i like to think he pretended not to know that Beerus was actually in the costume and internally had a wheezing fit seeing the destroyer put on an uncomfortable outfit.

actually, i think he just went along with the entire “Monaka is the strongest warrior i’ve ever fought” thing because it’s funny seeing Beerus panic

also Chichi’s probably in on his little secret too.

i'm currently thinking about how, for so long, you couldn't be an asian on the screen unless you were a side character that was pretty much built on stereotypes. and there are standout asian actors, but i'm a teenager so legends who made a name for themselves are kinda before my time. but both michelle yeoh and ke huy quan are the embodiment of not giving up on your dreams. even if it takes a while, you're time will come, and in a way that honors yourself. every time i see another post or edit of their oscar wins, i tear up.

i didn't grow up watching asians on tv. my only likeness as a child used to be mulan, but people at school used to tell me i couldn't just pick her as my favorite disney movie because she's asian (which, kids are dumb and that reasoning is stupid and besides the fact the she was the only representation kid-me had, mulan had a great storyline and message and characters and soundtrack and it was and still is a really great movie). i remember seeing characters like mike chang from glee on tv, but he was a character always pushed to the side, and those shows always had a way of just mocking and reaffirming stereotypes.

i think about how sometimes the only space for asian women was so that they could be sexualized, or how there was even less room for asian men on the screen unless they fit a certain look. how asians had to become an image to get their space.

and in recent years, the representation for asians has increased, and i'm so thankful. i wish i had that when i was younger, but i'm glad to have it now. with movies like shang chi or crazy rich asians, we get to see how respecting and celebrating culture is significant, but it's also not an asian's entire identity. how we are still people with stories that deserve to have main characters.

i'm so happy that eeaao gave michelle yeoh and ke huy quan their space. how this door opened for them and asians to be seen and respected. how they inspire people to dream big. how it feels possible for big dreams to really and truly happen.

when i was a little girl, i was obsessed with superheroes, which led me to my obsession with the tv show agents of shield. and i adored melinda may, played by ming na wen, who was a bad*ss character. and her character revolved not around her culture (although culture was not ignored) but how even without it she is still a character with a complex history and development and personality.

it's nice to be living and experiencing an era where asians are getting their recognition. representation is so important because it reaches so many people and lets them know that somewhere out there, achieving the dream, even for someone who looks like us, is within our reach.

we finally get to exist in the mainstream. and for that, my inner child is so grateful.

Marvel Phase 4 is literally the best phase and here is why.

Imagine the MCU as a restaurant. When it started out it served a very specific type of food, let’s say it served cold sandwiches. Now, I don’t really like sandwiches and I have a low tolerance for gluten. So while there were a couple of sandwiches worth eating from the MCU, I couldn’t really go there a lot and when I did I often left feeling a little off. Some people love sandwiches and that's great! The MCU was an incredible sandwich shop! But I, personally, can’t eat that many sandwiches.

Over the course of phase 2 and 3 the variety and ingredients in the sandwiches has changed. Maybe they got hot subs, vegetarian sandwiches; maybe they’re experimenting with different cultural foods and flavors in their sandwiches but...they’re still just all sandwiches.

Phase 4 is like...what happens when that amazing sandwich shop starts expanding its menu. Suddenly they have gluten free bread, they have dosas, they have tortillas, they have injera! They’ve expanded to serving soups.  They’ve started to offer “bread-less sandwiches” in the form of creative salads - all the same ingredients, different delivery system. The nice little sandwich shop is now a legitimate lunch restaurant, and the expanded menu has increased the number of diners who can enjoy the food.

Sure the sandwich purists are maybe annoyed their little sandwich shop is suddenly busy and the menu looks different, but they can still get their sandwiches so its not like the menu has excluded them.

All the previous phases of the MCU were leading to, and focused on, a single story line that culminated in the final film of the Avengers Saga. And now the MCU is branching out into an entire universe of ideas. And yeah, you’re not going to like all of it, but ultimately that doesn’t matter. The fact is that the MCU is getting creative and serving up a whole lot of things. And if folks can’t get over their parasocial relationship to the MCU, that’s not the MCU’s problem. I, personally, am grateful they’ve branched out because up until very recently, I couldn’t eat at the MCU restaurant very regularly, but now? They have my favorite meal.

So, to wrap up this long winded food metaphor...Phase 4 of the MCU is the best phase because of it’s diversity not only in characters, but in format, story, and relationship to the larger MCU universe. Variety is the spice of life, baby.

I love that Marvel is changing and subverting expectations! I love they’re playing with genre, changing scenery and cheesing it up in their new projects— I’m pretty sure they’re doing it because fans/audiences expect the tried-and-tired formula, and how boring is that to just give it to you? Haha no more easy post credit lead ups— since they know that’s what we’re looking for. Why would you want the same endings for these new beginnings?

Honestly, If you want the “old Marvel” go rewatch the earlier movies, and if that still doesn’t satisfy you— read the comics, or better yet, read a fanfic.

Marvel movies and TV shows will always revolve around the themes of hope for the future, protecting your loved ones, and overall togetherness. It’s just being wrapped and written differently— deal with it. A big saga ended and we’re in the beginnings of a new one, so enjoy the ride. Some stories speak right into you, and some to the people around you. Even in the realm of blockbuster feel-good-superhero movies, we should challenge ourselves to witness newness. If it doesn’t appeal to you anymore, that’s fine, we move on! Just don’t dampen anyone else’s excitement on your way out. Similarly—Marvel and Disney shouldn’t peddle the same old same old (under even tighter deadlines) to keep bitter fans, and those “fans” need to stop asking for Cap and Iron Man. Their /main/ stories have been written and closed. Phew!

As longtime followers or new fans, we should be happy to enjoy these fresh, vivid worlds and feel the thrill of empowerment in new heroes! Your favorite characters would want you to ❤️

Like LITERALLY L I T E R A L L Y !?!?!?!? Do they know that half the time there isn’t a “goal” over the combined storytelling of decades upon decades !? Sometimes, it’s just absolute chaos and authors and artists and creatives in comics retcon each other literally ALL THE TIME !?!?!?!? Carol Danvers has fought a clone of herself at least 4 times over the course of her comic book history — it’s a part of her character’s journey to always be fighting herself and challenging herself (literally). What other fucking storytelling device is going to have that other than superhero narratives???

I bring this up bc I want us to get over the “first ten years” of marvel studios — marvel has EARNED the public’s trust and money: they don’t NEED to make their name again. Endgame was a shot in the dark as far as I’m concerned — it was the combined weight of storytelling & luck over the course of a decade starting with Kevin Feige and Joe Quesada and Jon Favreau’s combined gamble with Iron Man and RDJ. We all got lucky with that era of Marvel bc it still had to earn the audience’s trust; it had to SELL itself to a public that up until that point had no real exposure to Marvel superheroes and its universe.

We won’t see that AGAIN.

Please, for the love of Chris Evans’ velvet clad ass at the 2019 Oscars, get OVER it. Please just go to these movies & have fucking fun — stop trying to guess at what they’re building to bc I’m so exhausted with news outlets telling me “Marvel is failing” or “Marvel is directionless” or “Marvel has lost its edge.”

No, you just don’t want to enjoy superhero movies anymore that are just self-contained and sensational. You NEED there to be something more and something ATTACHED to this epic labor of CGI, art, and ridiculousness. In other words, it’s not enough for you.

I’ve gone to Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Eternals, No Way Home, Doctor Strange, and Thor the past couple of years and I’ve loved all of them, but not because I expected there to be MORE attached to these movies. I didn’t need there to be MORE AND MORE AND MORE — I went and saw great superhero media. I saw characters I loved from the comics I grew up huffing transformed into fun and entertaining live action movies.

Please just go to these movies and watch Doctor Strange wear a fucking screaming cape of undead spirits and watch Thor turn an army of 7 year olds into epic warriors and watch Eternals for a beautiful & diverse cast of people with cool powers. And if you miss the Infinity Saga so much, GO REWATCH IT — but please leave the interconnected shit out of it. I’m exhausted.
