Of course, nonnie! Here I go...

A Love So Beautiful: To me this is like the classic example of the genre. It's the story of Chen Xiaoxi growing up while being perpetually in love of her neighbor Jiang Chen who seems aloof and pedantic but is just extremelly socially awkward. As usual it follows 5 best friends through high school shenanigans making you feel all warm and fuzzy. This is one of my faves but it has its problems, for starters once they leave high school the shows does a speed run to the present, creating a weird pacing in the last episodes. (It has a South Korean version that it's not...really good.. and an upcoming Thai version which I'm really excited for)

Le Coup de Foudre / I Don't Like This World, I Only Like You: This doesn't follow quite the same timeline but it's a really good show so I'm including. It follows Qiao Yi and Yan Mo, unlikely soulmates that are deskmates in high school. After Yan Mo is set to transfer to England by his parents he asks Qiao Yi to go with him. She accepts but stuff happens with her family and they lose contact for years until they reunite as working adults. The show skips from the present as they are married, to their high school life and their reunion. Featuring: strong female friendship that almost raise a child together, realistic sibling relationships, 30 year old actors in HS uniforms, and Fei Da Chuan the character to ever exist.

When I Fly Towards You: This one just makes you smile like an idiot all the time. Based on a novel written by Zhu Yi , the same writer of Hidden Love and master of writing men with poor self-esteem. Su Zaizai falls in love with Zhan Lurang at first sight and doesn't try to hide it at all. After an incident that gets Zaizai in serious trouble Lurang, Jiang Jia (Zaizai's closest friend), Guan Fang and Gu Ran help her and adopt each other as best friends for life. While the romance in this is top notch (Gu Ran and Jiang Jia deserved more screen time though), this show is mostly about the friendship between them. Also, Lurang and Zaizai are basically together from almost the start but since puppy love is kind of taboo in China it's not official until they graduate HS.

Go Ahead: This one is also a feel-fest. Jian Jian, Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu grow up together when Jian Jian and Ling Xiao's fathers decide to raise them together (yeah... I know...fellas?) and after Zi Qiu is basically abandoned by his mother. They treat each other as siblings and adore each other until Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu graduate HS and go back to their families. Jian Jian feels abandoned and starts treating them more coldly. The drama shows the importante of found family and how it compares to actual shitty blood families. The characters are so well-written, specially Jian Jian my beloved and shows actual mental health problems in a realitisic way. A lot of people disliked the romantic relationship between Ling Xiao and Jian Jian, but I'll let you form your own opinions

The first time I watched alsb, I definitely fell hard for wu bosong and didn’t care for jiang chen very much (in the beginning especially, but warmed up to him a bit eventually). I mean, how can you not… he’s very kind and treats her well, it’s hard not to get the second lead syndrome with him. With every rewatch though, I find myself liking jiang chen more and more after noticing things that completely went over my head the first time around.

At first, I had the impression that jiang chen didnt like xiaoxi at all. To me he was just another typical cold male lead. But having hindsight (+ rewatching many times now), I personally don’t think this is the case at all. Rather than being “mean” or “cold”, I realised a more accurate way to describe him was awkward and anti-social... he’s never outright mean to anyone really (sometimes his teasing towards xiaoxi definitely seems that way though lol), just very blunt. Not to be that guy, but I really do think jiang chen is misunderstood by many people who watch this drama. Hell, I was one of those people who misunderstood him ☠️ He also notices his feelings for xiaoxi much quicker than most people who watch this drama realise, you can see it right from the first episode.

Watching it back with those realisations, I don’t fall for wu bosong nearly as hard as I did the first time (or at all currently, by my fifth rewatch). Yes, he’s a great guy, but that doesn’t mean xiaoxi owes him anything. She made it clear that she considered him a close friend, but he still pursues her. This is just a personal feeling of mine that isn’t really a critique of wu bosong at all, but I find that so annoying 🥲 at that point, all I’m thinking is, just take the hint? Not that it’s even a ‘hint’ anymore if she’s outright said she doesn’t like him that way...

It would’ve been nice to see the show give wu bosong a happy ending, it was honestly a bit ridiculous to me that he was still hung up on xiaoxi long after high school. She was already clear with him, I wish that would’ve led to him eventually moving on and finding the right person for him because he really is lovely.

Summary:

When Tang Monk and his disciples passed through Babu Mountain, they encountered the Almighty Demon, who cast spells. In order to save his master, Wukong was childized by the Almighty Demon. In order for Wukong to recover his mana and break the witchcraft, Wuneng volunteered to come to Heaven for help. After Wuneng went to the Heavenly Court, he visited all kinds of gods to no avail, and then went down to the world. Tang Seng, Wuneng, and Wujing brought the young Wukong to Babu Village and met Sai Xishi. Sai Xishi's younger sister, Wan Zhu, tried many means to get close to Tang Seng but failed. She wrote a letter and handed it to Tang Seng, revealing a shocking secret. Tang Seng watched it, suddenly realized, and then told Wuneng, who realized the method to break Wukong's childized form, and broke the magic. In the Shenlai Inn, the four masters and apprentices worked together to eliminate all kinds of monsters, during which many warm and funny stories happened. After Wukong recovered his true form, he successfully eliminated the Almighty Demon, and was unanimously praised by the villagers of Babu Village. Amid the reluctance and farewell of the villagers, the four masters and apprentices continued westward.
