Lotus Lantern is a story about breaking the cycle
[ID: A three page comic done in white and shades of purple. Characters are uncolored, but have shading.
1. The first panel shows Liu Chenxiang with a determined expression from the shoulders up. Behind him is a shot of his torso and arms, gripping his axe. Text next to him reads, "Liu Chenxiang, son of son of Yang Chan and Liu Yanchan, came upon a mountain with axe in hand." The second panel shows Chenxiang, on the ground, facing his uncle as he approaches Mount Hua. There is somewhat skewed perspective, following the mountain as it reaches into the sky, accented by the clouds haloing it and Erlang Shen. Erlang Shen is on a cloud in front of the mountain, accompanied by XiaoTianQuan. Text on the mountain reads, "Intent to cleave open the cold stone." The perspective on the text matches that of the mountain. The third panel melts into the second panel- the grass beneath second panel Chenxiang's feet melting into the abstract background behind third panel Chenxiang. Here, Chenxiang is lifting up hi axe behind his head, preparing to strike. Text next to him reads, "As his uncle once did so many years ago."
2. A silhouette of two figures, a brother and sister with backs turned to one another. The lower parts of their body are obscured by clouds, which appear to be spilling out from a mountain which is separating the two. These clouds and this mountain serve as a backdrop to a young Erlang Shen crying and running into the arms of his smiling, teary-eyed mother as they reunite. His mother has her arms out to hug him. Text at the top of the page reads, "A tale told once before." Written on the silhouette of the brother reads, "A brother and a sister at odds." Written on the silhouette of the sister reads, "A mother imprisoned." Written on the mountain separating the two reads, "And a son, with love powerful enough to move mountains."
3. The first panel shows Erlang Shen from the shoulders up, looking down at Chenxiang with a disapproving gaze. Text on either side of him reads, "Erlang Shen had lived this tale once before" and "It had been his own story once upon a time." The second panel shows a skewed top-down perspective on Chenxiang as he stands atop a somersault cloud in the sky, glaring up at his uncle with an angry expression as he holds his axe. Text on either side of him reads, "So then why-" "-did the face looking back at him..." Third panel is dark and contains only text. It reads, "Remind him of someone else entirely?". Fourth panel shows a zoomed-in shot of Sun Wukong's face during the havoc in heaven, with an angry expression echoing Chenxiang's. There is a dark purple gradient from the bottom of the page to the top of the page.

Timeturner-jay, thank you for your kind and detailed comments on An Unadmitted Defeat !!! The reason I haven't replied directly to your message is because I want to keep it in my inbox forever!!! Journey to the West and Lotus Lantern hold a special place in my heart and I love these wild and fun and volatile and lively characters that amplify things we're so familiar with - familial disputes, friendship, betrayal - into a cosmic, mythological scale. It's been a while since I could work on any of my fics, but this one is on extended hiatus. Though it really is another one of the many retellings of Lotus Lantern, one that focuses on Sun Wukong and Chen Xiang's relationship and training time. The core of the story is there, and the next part is up to Chen Xiang to save his mother :) I really wonder if Light Chaser studios or another animation crew is going to pick up something Lotus Lantern related soon. Thanks again, I'm so glad you could read this work and find joy and inspiration. I'll always be into JTTW and LL.
Awww, I'm really happy that my comments mean that much to you! :D You deserve them though - your writing is so heartfelt and lovely, and I haven't stopped thinking about it!
Fun fact, I'm re-reading chapter 9 of An Un-Admitted Defeat right now because I miss Sun Wukong and Chen Xiang's Sifu-Túdì relationship so much. :') That chapter was my favourite - Wukong just cares so much about this kid! And he teaches him so much more than just fighting. He teaches him how to read and write, how to listen to nature and recognise its creatures from sound alone, how to give aura to others and how to use it to create wards, how to play Go... And he also makes sure that this kid gets to have a proper childhood. 😭 He shows him how to do the perfect cannonball into the pond, he shares sweets with him, ropes him into a cricket fight, lets him play and make friends with the monkeys - and if he can present a lesson or a training exercise as a game instead, he does. He sees this kid who is so jaded and hurt and determined and traumatised and far far too filled with hatred for his young age, and he helps him be a child again and watches over him and soothes his nightmares, and I'm just so emotional over it. 😭 There's nothing he wouldn't do for that boy.
He'd even throw away his hard-won peace and fight Heaven all over again just to keep him safe, evidently. :')
I just care about them so much. The way you write them and their relationship is everything to me!
Hey guys! Go read An Un-Admitted Defeat please, it's really good and it owns my whole heart and I'll never be over the cliffhanger it left off on! 🙏

Heyo. Wukong has his army of children but here's a fun fact. I don't think it's Canon to LMK but he actually had another one named Chen xiang from a story called "the magic lotus lantern". And this kid is actually erlang's nephew. Without getting into spoiler territory. Wukong becomes his mentor (father) and helped Chen xiang on his quest to beat the shit out of his uncle.
Tldr: wukong adopted erlang's nephew and helped him prepare to beat the shit out of his uncle.
I figured as the current leader of dad wukong supremacy you would maybe find this funny.
OH I KNEW THIS! I HEARD OF THIS!
I — AHEM i actually DO want Chen Xiang to show up but idk how canon he is to JTTW lore or anything but one can dream right?
Anyways I find it funny that I was planning to design him and add him to my Revived AU but— oh i have this stupid hc that Chen Xiang is Xiaotian’s descendant? Or more so QXT is his reincarnation 🤔🤔
Like.. imagine we get Erlang and he recognizes Xiaotian and goes, “nephew?” and THAT’S one of the reasons why Wukong wanted to take him in as a successor? Because that’s his adopted son? BUT ANYWAYS
YEA YEA I LOVE THEM i wanna give them a dynamic name and all but AAA i gotta read Lotus Lantern first.. I gotta — yes I have to. For dad!swk. It’s what he would’ve wanted

Yang Jian: “Chen Xiang???!”
Chen Xiang: “Tell me who the hell you are!!!”
These two lines in the New Gods: Yang Jian trailer 2 have me believing that Yang Jian, after finding his 12-14yo nephew which he made homeless and motherless, trains him in martial arts and magic just like the role of the Pili Thunder Immortal in the original. Yang Jian is Chen Xiang’s master in this verson.
Except Chen Xiang has NO IDEA this guy. Is his UNCLE. This guy who is randomly good to him. Is his SCUMBAG UNCLE. This guy, who caused ALL of his child life crisis. Like man is not doing it out of the goodness of his heart, he feels responsible as his UNCLE. Because poor Chen Xiang has no idea Erlang Shen is just Some Guy called YANG JIAN.

沉香 chénxiāng, agarwood A type of wood commonly used for incense. Trees afflicted with heavy stress are highly preferred over their healthy counterparts, as it is their infected heartwood that provides agarwood's valued fragrance.
[ID: A portrait of Liu Chenxiang from the waist up, looking forward solemnly. He is holding a mountain-shaped incense burner which is emitting incense smoke. Where the smoke crosses his face, features of a young Erlang Shen are visible instead, including his Heavenly Eye. Behind Chenxiang is a split log of agarwood, the inside of which is infected and blackened. Where the incense smoke crosses the log is desaturated, making the log appear more like a mountain. The shadow of the log extends upwards and where it intersects with the smoke is colored like a 青绿山水 painting. Over the shadow is written “香炉墩 (Lit. Incense burner, Fig. Only son in the family)” from right-to-left in golden seal-script. A red stamp to the right of the text reads "宝莲灯 (Lotus Lantern)." End ID]

Hey MDZS fandom. I want you guys to be careful interacting with this person.
Tumblr media
If you don't already know, Chinese people have had a long history with cultural erasure when it comes to taking on English-language names. It started with imperialism, and continues as a way to "assimilate" and avoid mockery of our language in western countries.
For Chinese diaspora like myself, it's another form of racism we face, to the point where some of us are reclaiming our names in everyday life. Here's an article about this movement happening across Asian diasporas in the United States -- just to name one instance out of many.
The responses to this post reflect that:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see that my comment assumed "good faith." However, OP deleted these comments and blocked me. (That didn't stop other people from calling it out as well, though I have to assume that if OP was so offended by my comment, the next few people will receive the same treatment.)
Tumblr media
I honestly didn't like whipping up the diaspora statement -- that I wrote with multiple Chinese diaspora fans of MDZS, all of us hailing from multiple different countries and backgrounds, our ancestry coming from completely different regions of China -- because it meant that we were encountering another microaggression.
If you ever wonder why MDZS and danmei fandoms in general seem to be so bereft of Chinese diaspora voices, that's absolutely because of these microaggressions: Someone makes a joke, writes a story, writes some meta, that is culturally ignorant at best, offensive and harmful at worst, and when we gently correct them, explaining why it's racist, the person in question shuts us down, dismisses us, gets defensive, or worse.
Regardless of where you are -- fandom, social media, on the street, at work, at school -- as long as you are interacting with other people, your words matter and affect other people. That includes being racially offensive, even if you didn't intend to be. It's how you respond to the people you've insulted that reveals your character, how willing you are to be complicit in their mistreatment.
My rule of thumb has always been this -- if multiple people, including those of the culture you've just made a microaggressive joke about, find it unfunny, racist, or harmful, then you listen. Dismiss or ignore them, then yes -- you absolutely are racist.
