Winner Takes All
@lar-mx asked @howlingday -- "dumb idea 2, nora dies for a pancake… she comes back a week later telling jaune that he has to play a poker game against god or else they will both die (in nora's case again), jaune tries to lose but the lady of fortune shouts: (I didn't keep you alive so you would surrender to that bitch (the god of light))."
I'M SO SORRY!!! I CAN'T RESIST!!!
/==/
Jaune stood in the small cemetery that was part of Beacon's grounds. A quiet and peaceful place reserved for those students that didn't have a family to take possession of their remains.
Jaune: *sniffling* Nora, how could you leave us? Ren is just not himself anymore... and Pyrrha has lost her smile... it's just so senseless... a pancake... it shouldn't have...
Nora: JAUNE-JAUNE!
Jaune whips about and sees a slightly pale Nora looking at him with a bright smile.
Jaune: *VERY UNMANLY SCREAM OF TERROR*
Nora: Why is everyone doing that?
Jaune: No... Nora? How? You're...
Nora: Yeah, yeah. I'm dead... or was!
Jaune: Was?
Nora: I... well... um...
Jaune: *eyes narrow* What did you do?
Nora: I convinced an otherworldly being to resurrect me... yeah, just that, only that?
Jaune: *raises an eyebrow while crossing his arms over his chest* Really?
Nora: Really.
Jaune: What's the catch?
Nora: Someone has to play them in a game to make this stick!
Jaune: Is that it? *sees that Nora is fidgeting* Nora...
Nora: Well the thing is...
Jaune: I'm waiting.
Nora: Someone has to play and WIN to grant me my complete resurrection... but if they lose...
Jaune: If they lose...
Nora: They also die? *unleashes a Ruby-esque set of Puppy-Dog eyes* I'm sorry?
Jaune: *sighing and shaking his head* Nora... which being is it?
Nora: It's... hey, you're taking this whole thing rather well, the scream not withstanding. How is that possible? Pyrrha fainted and Ren just... sat there, ignoring me.
Jaune: This is not the first time...
Nora: What now?
Jaune: Nothing. So which entity is it?
Nora: The Brother of Light.
Jaune: Okay... wait! Did you just come to me because Pyr and Ren wouldn't do it?
Nora: Well... I did say Pyr-Pyr fainted, and well Rennie is not in a good place.
Jaune: So I'm your THIRD choice.
Nora: Sorry.
Jaune: Fine. When is this supposed to happen?
Nora: You'll do it?
Jaune: Of course. To get you back, I would do just about anything.
Nora: That's SO sweet of you!
Jaune: So wh...
Brother of Light (BoL): How about now... Mr Arc.
Jaune: *sighs and shakes his head* Fine.
Tumblr media
Jaune (With Nora hovering at his shoulder) : B4
BoL: *grumbling* Hit... you sunk my battleship.
Jaune: Well that's it, I won so....
BoL: Best of THREE!
Jaune/Nora: That wasn't the...
BoL: BEST. OF. THREE.
Jaune snorts and gives the Brother of Light the stink-eye, while Nora pouts.
Tumblr media
BoL: *Looking at his hand, showing a pair of queens and a pair of nines* I call *pushes all his chips into the centre of the table*
Jaune sighs, and pulls out of his stack just enough to cover the bet.
BoL: Read 'em weep... two pair, queen's high.
Jaune: Not bad... *Jaune lays down his hand* Full house... Aces over Kings.
BoL: How?
Jaune: Just lucky... now that's two wins to one...
BoL: BEST OF FIVE!
Nora/Jaune: What? No!
BoL: Are you...
????: That's enough of that. You lost... pay up.
BoL: Fate? What are you... NO! That's cheating!
Fate: Cheating? Who me? Why would I do such a thing? Just because the Arc's are descendants...
BoL: But she... she...
Fate: You made the deal...
BoL: Fine *crosses his arms over his chest and pouts*
Nora: Is it over? Do I get to stay alive?
Fate: Yes my dear. My beloved Jaune has won you.
Nora: Thank you! *Hugs Jaune and places a kiss on his cheek* Thank You! I get to live again! I can be with Renn....
Fate: Ah Ah Ah. That's not how it works.
Nora: What?
Jaune: No... no... no... I don't need...
Fate: Hush now, dear. You see Ms Valkyrie, or can I call you Nora? I would prefer Nora, as you'll be part of the family soon.
Nora: Say what now?
Fate: Jaune won you back from the after-life... do you contest that?
Jaune: No.
Fate: And do you understand the implications of such an action?
Nora: Umm... no?
Fate: It's like this...
Jaune: *cutting off Fate* It's like this... I won so I now own your soul, which means you are mine until the...
Nora: Jaune?
Fate: Tell her.
Jaune: We are bonded together... *sighs and rubs the back of his neck* ... until the end of time.
Nora: What? How? I don't...
Fate: You and Jaune are now ... for the lack of a better term or concept... husband and wife... in the cosmic sense... didn't Jaune warn you?
Nora: I... *eyes narrow* No he didn't.
Jaune: Oops... My Bad?

Granny picked up the baby and laid a hand on its forehead.
"Fever's gone," she said.
MISTRESS WEATHERWAX? said Death from the doorway.
"Yes, sir?"
I HAVE TO KNOW. WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD NOT...LOST?
"At the cards, you mean?"
YES. WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE?
Granny laid the baby down carefully on the straw, and smiled.
"Well," she said, "for a start...I would have broken your bloody arm."

Perfection was, for me, a kind of eternity I thought I could own. If every detail was in its place, I thought the world might just come to a stop and stay that way forever.

Still not sure if I like the placement of the words on the Faro game peices but I couldn't think of anything better so here we are.
I enjoyed Anatomy class so much my love for the stranger continuing. They just wanted to learn and that teacher was just being a scaredy-cat and a meanie, they gave you a gift after, you could at least be grateful.
For being another not really important episode I did really like Taken Ill on the first listen. This line is so off putting I love it.

Part of me pt 2: Bionic dad Harry:
*Mentions of dark events, accident, death, trauma, angst and some gore and mutilation mentioning*
It had been weeks since Rowan had spilled his woe to Harry. It was confirmed that neither Perry nor Jessica survived. Maxine on the other hand was still on life support. Rowan choked back his culpability at the funeral. Looking at the three coffins of the ex high school students was superabundant for the former. Harry's supportive arm hadn't moved an inch during the ceremony of remembrance for the tragedy that Friday night.
But in the forthcoming months, it was Harry that became clingy to Rowan. Not the other way around. Confusion sparked in Rowan as to why his father couldn't resist checking his windows every night, or adjusting his pillow to an non suffocating level. At first these little protective quirks, didn't resonate with the boy as he was still too shaken from the whole thing. But once they started interfering with his power practices, it became more acute.
Sporadic quarrels broke out of scarcely energy; repeated memories of the trauma were brought up over and over again; tense mists became the causal until finally the words "You should have never been with them! That was a dumb choice Rowan!"
Rowan stared blindly into Harry's eyes. Eyes became chilling and vacant; mouth dry, yet set in a firm frown; eyebrows were straight, not furrowed in a frown or curved in confusion or sorrow, just straight....like an aloof statue. The clutching grip on the reigns of his son's emotions were enough to lower Harry's own pride.
"You're right. That was a stupid mistake....." And then Rowan left. Just turned around, walked up to his bedroom and closed the door silently locking it. Maybe he wanted Harry to feel his heart hit his stomach and his lungs fill with contrition. Or maybe, even he was lost in his own universe of sober pain.
It wasn't until later that night, when Harry came to Rowan's bedroom with his dinner and a plea for forgiveness. His eyes were red, puffy and runny like a broken tap. He couldn't imagine the mental strength Rowan must have had to pull from somewhere just to see another day. The unfeigned father, carefully set the plate down on the desk before taking a seat next to Rowan on his window seat.
"Hey kiddo," Harry watched as Rowan stared blankly at the moonlit sky that vapored it's glow into the velvet painting of navy sunset. "How you doin?" Rowan continued his stare out the window, barely making any eye contact with his father. "I'm sorry," Rowan shifted his eyes over to Harry a little.
"I'm really sorry for what I said Row." The son looked down, finally shifting his body to his father. He nodded, before allowing his glossy eyes to look into his dad's pleading ones. Like he was beckoning him to spill his deepest secret of what happened that night, like there was more than what Rowan could shove into words. But Harry also his some tortuous classifiables.
"Rowan," Harry set a gentle touch to his hand, "When you told me what happened that night.....I was scared. Very scared. My mind couldn't even fathom; that you were in that car with all those kids....and then...." Harry choked, "You could've died."
"Rowan, I know you're at that age where you can take care of yourself a little bit by now, but.....it still scares me. I know you're older now, making your own choices and fair enough you might come across something like this. But it just shocked me to see that you were in that car, with all those kids......most of them are dead.....and one of them.....well..." Rowan's eyes followed Harry's head as it hung low.
"She's- their gonna pull the plug tonight," Rowan shook his head and met his matching emerald eyes with Harry. "You're very fortunate."
A sharp gulp aroused more shabby feelings in Harry. "Rowan....." He took his son's hands into his, "No matter how old you are.....I'll never stop worrying about you or your wellbeing. Ever. You're a part of me in a way and if anything ever happened to you..." A gasp for air is what the father was choking on. His eyes were overflowing, filled to the brim with tears that trickled down his red cheeks; like ice melting a glass of sizzling soda, sending it's tears running down the side of the glass.
"I'm sorry dad," Rowan finally stripped his poker face of a more pained look. "That was stupid and I am very lucky aren't I?" Harry nodded. "Yes you are."
He saddled his arm around him; the pair just looking into the night sky with a bright star shooting itself down...barely missing the window. It made Rowan think of Perry, Maxine and Jake. All those souls shining brightly in the sky.
Rowan was just grateful to have the chance to wish a goodbye.

Dear people who survived life-threatening health conditions and accidents as babies and children,
You are literally so cool?? Oh my god??? Death wanted to take you early and didn’t. Couldn’t. You cheated Death. That’s one of the most hardcore, badass things ever, flipping off Death in such a vulnerable stage of life. You came into this world fighting and with a little help you beat the odds and made it.
I’m so happy I live in a time and place that you’re here. You’re an inspiration and I admire you for your strength and perseverance. Keep kicking ass out there. ❤️

MAG 29 Cheating Death
Our statement giver is Nathaniel who can't read or write given he was born in the 1700s but he has a name.
He doesen't say what nationality he was seemingly not remembering but he gives his name.
I don't think he remembers his name. He just got a human flesh body that was probably new and decided "Hmm. Yes! This form of human flesh on my bones look like a Nathaniel to me!"
I love death avatars. I remember someone in a TikTok comment mentioning how funky he was. Can't agree more. He is fun.
The first time listening, I had a mayor interest in it, because I got a love towards the American Revolutionary War. (Yes, I whatched Hamilton on Disney+, why would you ask?)
Now listening back, I had to check the fandom wiki because if Elias was a filing clerck there in 1975, he would be like 60 in S1 that he isn't. He joined in 1991 what still makes him like 40ish.
Makes me interested. Does Elias has the memories of Jonah's previous bodies or he just used the Eye to know when Jon asked?

Am I saying this will be your new favourite show? That it will make you smile and shiver and puzzle and delight? That it's something really special? That it will ease the pain of waiting for other shows to happen?
Yes. I am saying that.
It's SO good. And it starts in three weeks...

Round One Part Four - Match 29
Barring any of the post-apocalypse statements, I think this is our very first actual main character statement giver episode! I will say that Cheating Death is a very interesting take on the "gambling with death" trope.
