Dreaming Wide Awake - Ch 21
PREVIEW:
On the drive home from his first therapy session, Adrien stared out the car window while his mother chattered in the seat beside him.
‘I’m so proud of you, sweetheart.’ She sounded more alive than she had in months.
He gave her a thin smile. He’d made her happy, and that made him happy. Or…it was a relief, at least. The thought of displeasing her – or anyone, for that matter – made his stomach twist.
Like how it twisted whenever he was with Marinette, lately. She never seemed happy with him anymore. He’d failed her somehow.
But she’d failed him. She was lying to him.
With nothing better to do, he dug into his pocket, pulling out the bottle of pills they’d picked up at the pharmacy on the way back. For the third time, he read the name of the medication – the dosage – the instructions.
When he caught the encouraging smile his mother was flashing him, he stuffed the bottle back in his pocket and looked out the window again.
Back at the house, he stepped out of the car, accepting a tight hug from his mother before hurrying inside. The pill bottle burned in his pocket as he raced up the stairs.
In his room, he flopped down on the bed, arms out, his eyes dull as he stared at the ceiling.
Plagg flew out. ‘That was a good first step, Adrien.’
He glanced at Plagg – then stared up again. Not that he cared about his lying, backstabbing kwami’s opinion anymore but…. ‘You really think so?’
‘Of course. You’ve acknowledged there’s a problem. That’s important. Now you can begin to fix it.’
Fix it . ‘I’m a person, not a broken bicycle.’
‘Believe me, I know. If you were a bicycle, all of this would be so much easier.’

Hi!
I wrote this short Adrien salt + Lukanette endgame fic a while ago. Enjoy?
Summary
Ladybug was mad, ENRAGED.
Yet- how come Chat Noir was the one akumatized instead, when everything was HIS FAULT?

He was the one who deceived her!
And now Chat noir- Chat Blanc- was walking around trying to destroy her. And she, Ladybug, ran, jumping on the roofs of the Parisian buildings, and dodging destructive waves aiming for her.
So unfair!

It all started when Chat Noir finally stopped his flirting.
"I understand you're not comfortable, so I'll stop. Besides, I'm in love with someone else now," he had said.
Ladybug was grateful. Really grateful. He finally seemed to take his job seriously and their teamwork improved. It was nice to see that he changed.
Now, she didn't have to roll her eyes at unsolicited advances or for not going on dates she never agreed to. Everything stood professional.
Until that night.
All because she had let her guard down and allowed her excited Marinette self say too much. How could she have imagined that…
"You look happy tonight, Ladybug" Chat Noir hummed. "Did something good happen?"
"Yes. Very good" she smiled widely.
"Oh? What is it?"
"I don't know if I should tell you, but I'm so excited and-"
"Oh?" He smiled and leaned his head to the side, showing curiosity. He imagined that she may have been accepted to her dream university as she mentioned before, but he was eager for her to tell him.
Until he actually heard it. It wasn’t what he had expected.
"I have a boyfriend," she confessed. "We've been close friends for a long time and I still can't believe we feel the same! He's amazing and the most caring boy I've ever met. I’m so happy! I love him very much!" She squealed.
And that's what unleashed the storm.
"No!" Chat Noir stood up aggressively. "You can't have a boyfriend! You're supposed to be with ME! We're meant for each other! I even restrained myself from telling you how much I love you or to kiss you because I know you like gentlemen and- you were supposed to fall for me! I worked so hard to impress you and try to get your attention!"
“What…?” She couldn't register what he was saying immediately, but when she did she couldn’t help but feel betrayed. "Are you saying… That everything until now was an act…? You were just pretending? I trusted you!"
The betrayal was too much to bear. And yet- he was the one getting akumatized? Again. For his selfishness and for not listening to her, as usual.
She was enraged. Hell! She should have been the akuma, not him!
But now - She needed help. All the help she could get.
The fox, the turtle, the ox, the mouse, the dog, the dragon, the snake, the rabbit...
And after a few second chances, they finally defeated the akuma and a purified butterfly flew away. Magical ladybugs did the rest to fix the massive damage caused by Chat Blanc- Chat Noir-, Paris’ former superhero after the events.
"No… M'lady…" he begged, but he could only watch as she walked away, leaving a trail of tears as she left Adrien Agreste sobbing on his own.

"I can't believe it!" Marinette cried, secure in her boyfriend's arms. "All this time-! I thought he was finally maturing, becoming more professional- I really trusted him!"
Luka hummed and rubbed her back. He did wonders calming her down. How many times could have she been akumatized if it wasn't for him?
"And he was Adrien all this time… I can't believe I was so blind! I thought he was sweet, innocent and caring… I even called him perfect a few times, damn it!" She yelled in Luka's chest. "But no! He is none of those things! He's just selfish, disrespectful and irresponsible! I thought we were partners! I thought he would be happy for me when I told him about you!" She groaned. "Hell- he even congratulated us when I had the mask off! You figured out my identity on your own, without magic, just because you care about me…" she took a moment to look at Luka, her hand cupping his face softly and he hummed happily at the contact. She let her hands descend to his chest level, gripping his jacket, and sighed. "Chat, on the other hand, couldn't tell us apart despite his claims of being 'in love'. Ugh, what a joke…"
"You couldn't have known. You did the best you could, melody" Luka kept caressing her back in support.
"And he still got akumatized!" Marinette roared. "He completely betrayed my trust, Paris’ trust, our partnership! And still got offended because I have a boyfriend that makes me happy! Heck- I really should have been the one akumatized, not him!"
"Don't say that… I don't want you to get akumatized... Ever"
"I know…" She softened a bit at that. "But I'm so mad, Luka! I want to scream, to curse, to set a freaking dumpster on fire!" He groaned. "Maybe with a bit of luck his photos that used to be in my room are still there and I can kill two birds with one stone!"
That made Luka giggle. "Didn't you throw them out a long time ago?"
"I did! And I made sure not a single one of them remained! But now I wish there were still some so I could burn them to ashes!" She growled.
"You're funny even when you're rightfully angry," Luka laughed.
"I am rightfully angry! Very rightfully!" She pouted proudly and he chuckled. Cute. A moment later she blushed happily when he kissed her cheek.
"What are you going to do now? With the ring, I mean" he asked.
"I need to talk to Plagg first. Figure things out. And then, I think I'm going to keep the ring inside the box"
"Are you sure?"
"Well, I hope I can count on you if it ever becomes indispensable." She leaned in to give her boyfriend a kiss on his cheek.
"You can always count on me, Marinette. You know that" he smiled tenderly. "Especially if you ask me like this"
He leaned in to kiss her cheek and she giggled. Music to his ears.
"Thank you, Luka. I love you. You're the best boyfriend I could ever ask for. I'm so lucky" She kissed his lips, making herself comfortable in his lap.

Chat Blanc's eyes flickered to the long corridor ahead of them. Despite the morning sun slowly creeping in through the open doors, his gaze remained cold and dark.
His gaze remained fixed there, staring blankly as he said, "There's no bargains left to be made, little mouse."

“What the hell are you doing?” Bunnyx hissed as she stormed towards her, only to come to a halting stop when she saw Ladybug was not alone. “No. No no no no no no! You can’t bring him here!”
Ladybug calmly looked over her shoulder. Chat Blanc hovered closely behind her, his eyes still softly closed just like he’d promised. From the slight baring of his fangs however, it was clear that he wasn’t exactly thrilled to be in Bunnyx’s presence either.
In an effort to soothe his turbulent frustration, she lightly squeezed his hand. His cat ears flattened to his head at her action, but he didn’t seem angry about her gesture. Instead he pressed his pale lips into a thin line, hiding his sharp teeth once more. He shuffled closer to her so that his chest was almost flush against her back. It was as though without being able to see her, he was using every other sense available to him to make sure she was still there before him. Even though he couldn’t see it, Ladybug smiled sadly at him. She gave his hand another squeeze.
“I brought you here to help fix things!” Bunnyx chastised. “This isn’t a job picking up strays for rescuing. If you leave him be then it will all be over.”
“I’m not leaving him be,” Ladybug answered simply. “We’ve just come to a… a compromise.”
Bunnyx continued to stare in disbelief. She’d probably thought that Ladybug had completely lost her mind and would start speaking in tongues any moment.
“I’ve made a promise,” Ladybug continued as she looked at Chat Blanc again. Even with his eyes closed she knew all of his attention was on her. He was still her Minou. Even if the Noir in him was buried deep under sheets of ice and glacial water, she knew he was still there. “And he’s promised me. I trust him.”
Chat Blanc’s cat ears twitched as though he were as shocked at her admission as Bunnyx.
Bunnyx meanwhile had been reduced to a mortified stupor, but she appeared to have relented to whatever craziness Ladybug was attempting.
Taking a deep breath, Ladybug squeezed Blanc’s hand and encouraged him to walk with her. “Come on, Minou. Remember to behave yourself, okay?”
He gave her a fanged grin. “I’ll be the purrfect gentleman.”
They both passed through the portal, leaving a frowning Bunnyx behind, and stepping forwards into a familiar Paris that still hummed with the sound life and sheer existence.

I think this fandom just really hates Adrienette, but I can't figure out the reason (but your theory of the fandom not taking them seriously because they're kids may be true). They write post-s5 break-up "fix it" fics, they say Adrienette should break up to restore the balance (not sure what balance they're talking about). Jeez, Adrienette is literally the cutest cartoon couple I've ever seen, and I've been rooting for them since day one. How can someone want them to break up? Why can't the fandom just be happy for them?
It's literally so baffling to me, nonny. There have been people who have been rooting against them since before they were even official in s5. And for why? For me, them getting together made sense after s4 bc, to me, s4 demonstrated why it couldn't have been LadyNoir. (Actually even as far back as s3 when we had Chat Blanc) And that's why I don't think it will be LadyNoir in the future either even if they did break up. The show has put too much emphasis on how everything goes wrong when the heroes pair up. They both get distracted and tragedy strikes. I don't forsee it being MC or Ladrien either bc MC literally agreed they can't be together, and I think that would go for Ladrien as well. And Marinette already gets enough shit from people for being a "stalker" to Adrien, and it would only get worse if they broke up, and she turned around and dated him again as Ladybug when he doesnt know it's her. I can already see the salt posts about how she's so obsessive and won't move on and how she's taking advantage of him and tricking him.
Adrinette is the side that worked, that's why they went that route. It allows the heroes to be heroes and the kids to be kids. We can still get meaningful interactions with the other sides while they are dating as civilians. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how the dynamics evolve in future seasons. I wanna see MC and Ladrien half-requited with the heroes privately swooning over their bf/gf personally. We got a little bit of it in s5 with Chat swooning over Marinette when she was being a boss bitch. I want that in Ladrien, please.
I don't know why people hate Adrinette being together so much. I don't know where people get the idea that it's boring or problematic or detrimental to their characters or whatever fucking complaint they have against it. The Adrinette we got in s5 was great and so meaningful, and I'm happy that they did what they did. They could have just stuck them together in s5 and been like okay all of their problems are solved, and they're totally perfect and in love, but that's not what happened. They weren't perfect. They had to work together to make it work. They both recognized their traumas and respected each other's boundaries until they found something that worked for both of them. They really fought so damn hard to be together last season, but people just don't fucking care. My heart broke for them when they finally shared their first kiss, and it wasn't the perfect romantic moment they imagined. It was desperate, longing, afraid. All they wanted all season was just to be together, and now they finally have that. And we got that in a kids cartoon! So often love is treated as a fantasy where everything is perfect, and the couple gets together in the end and rides off into the sunset and lives happily ever after. But that wasn't their story, and I applaud them for that. I love that this show depicted the messier but crucially important sides of love about setting boundaries, addressing trauma so you don't hurt the other person, being patient and understanding while the other person is working through something because those things are hard in a relationship. A lot of those things are make or break in relationships, but the ones that want to be together will put in the work, and I think it's so important to show that in an age appropriate way to kids.
So, yeah, fuck anyone rooting for their downfall. Fuck anyone who thinks that the 4 sides are competing with each other and that Adrinette being together is an affront to their favorite side. Fuck anyone who thinks Adrinette being together is bad. It's not, and anyone who thinks it is can feel free to block me.
Maybe instead of rooting for Adrinette to break up, people should be rooting for a reveal. That's how we get the other sides, babes. That's how we should want to get the other sides. But this fandom isn't ready for a reveal tbh. They'd just bitch about how the sides are all the same now, and it's so boring. Can't win for fucking losing in this show.

Miraculous ladybug is such a fantastic train wreck of a show because it manages to be both interesting, good, and infuriatingly bad all at the same time and it's really hard to articulate why. Especially with more plot happening in the later seasons it's interesting to see how it maintains an active audience both in the better and worst parts of the show. Which is funny because they're usually the same parts
Ok for example. Sentibubbler is one of my favorite episodes because it actually engages in an interesting scenario; Hawk Moth has finally managed to find someone who might lead him to Ladybug, so Rena Rouge has to really use her powers in creative ways just to throw him off her trail. It's a actually creative setup compared to the usual Monster of the week format. But while I liked it, the setup, payoffs and consequences feel jarring and sour the whole setup.
Alya just became the Permanent Holder of the Fox Miraculous an episode. And Ladybug is doubting that choice, rightly so I'd say, because Hawk Moth almost immediately realizes that she has a closer relationship with LB because he was spying on known previous holders. She knew this because she caught the spying sentimonsters in the same episode she let Alya keep the fox. She goes to voice her fear and is told she's overreacting by just about everybody in the know despite having experienced tangible evidence that there is a danger(chat blanc), immediately shown to be right and shadow moth is targeting Alya, and then apologizes afterwards for being afraid of something that just happened. And her fear is more than sensible and is shown to be right, because Alya breaks the rules and shares her own identity to Nino. So Marinette is shown to basically be entirely right in her fears, told she is bad for being afraid, and is given the blame when it all comes crashing down. When Rena is rediscover because Nino reveals he knows she's active (in front of Hawk Moth again btw) LB takes the fox back again, which is both entirely justified and arguably the wrong decision because once it happens LB immediately gets all the kwami's stolen.
And to make things seem weirder, Hawk Moth was only spying on Alya because he learned her identity as a temp holder from Miracle Queen and was spying on known holders and watching how LB gets to them. Miracle Queen only became an Akuma because she was angry that ther rules meant that with her secret exposed, she couldn't be a superhero anymore. (Same with Kagami. She's explicitly told that because she outed her Identity, she can't be a super again) So why does Alya not have to follow those rules because their identities got exposed? In the same vein it's not okay for LB and CN to know each other's identities, but it's ok for Alya and Nino to know each other as temp holders(Chat blanc shows an actual effect of sharing identities, but not why the rules apply so selectively).
This show both creates some impressive ideas and seems to never respect them. Honestly it feels like this show operates entirely on dream logic where things just happen as the writers need to, logic be damned, which leads to a bunch of inspirational ideas that conflict constantly. Which is why I think so many people both like the show, engage with the show, make theories, get angry with the show, and then make fix-it fics and Au's that often are better than canon*. I think this is why this show is so popular; it's less of a good show and more like a pintrest board of someone's ideas, designs and inspirations. Most of it clashes but a lot of the base chunks have some really good foundations.
*not me though. I exclusively started watching the show because Hawk Moth acting like a dark and serious person, saying the word "Evil-ize" in a serious voice, and then summon the dumbest villain you've ever seen is so irrationally funny to me. This is a comedy with a fandom attached and both are doing two separate things

The classmates premise in Protection reminds me a lot of something (below the cut for those holding off for chronological order):
The “Kiss will fix everything” theory sure sounds a lot like DARK CUPID, doesn’t it? I mean, kisses never fix everything, but they can sure help sometimes.
Especially when true love’s kiss works, even when you are Ladybug and in full S1 denial about feelings for your adorkable partner.
Sincerely, as someone who literally wrote a Darker Cupid spec fic within the last month because of what canon seemed to be doing.
If Dark Cupid was step 1, Elation gave us a step 2 echo of that same type of moment in frightening chaos of Marinette’s potential Akumatization, and Chat Noir’s hasty version of said kiss to distract her. Was there love there, sure. But he felt unworthy of it because of his own duty.
3. They’ve now established a new pattern of turning a prior, but early Akumatization idea upside down when the villains have been upcycled (Darker Owl, Riposte Prime, etc.) The exact how and the why can vary to however the writer’s have wanted to bridge piece together.
But Darker Cupid would require some Kim backstory...and presumably heartbreak of some sort.
Interestingly, Kim was the only other holder that neither Marinette or Adrien knew about. Master Fu handed him the colors.
Hawkmoth knew about him, though at the end of...S3? They’ve never really played that hand.
Ondine has...not really been present.
Kim had a crush on Chloe, which doesn’t exactly show the best judgment...just vanity.
He tried to throw shade at Alix and she curb stomped him.
Max is his best friend but they’ve never been shown to be very close.
If I was Chloe or Lila, Kim would be the class’s weakest link...and one of the strongest Akuma in terms of mass confusion and damage.
We need Chat Noir to come to the realization that Ladybug does love him. One that he cannot possibly deny. Maybe a Darker Cupid isn’t the mode, but this realization must happen and happen sometime soon.
4. Lastly, if Monarch has shown he can try to Akumatize one, it is very possible for Monarch to try to Akumatize them both simultaneously... especially if he feels that he has no other option left to him.
Especially if Nathalie is actively working against him and Lila has managed to turn the manipulation tables on him...
Fighting off their inner demons would make for a rather terrifying visual.
The resurgence of Ladybug’s trauma and fears at the sight of Chat Blanc and his hauntingly distant blue eyes...that hadn’t quite lost who he was.
Maybe a Dark Sandboy version of Ladybug shouting to his fears that she would never love him...maybe with mirrored echoes of Marinette fearing that their love could never come. That she couldn't love him, especially in his form that could so easily destroy everything in this world.
Making him terrified again that he would be constantly alone, just as he has lost or is losing everyone else in his life.
Where Ladybug and Chat Noir are fighting off their darkest left with no other choice but to save each other...to save the one they love the most at their darkest moment.
The power of love always so strong, perhaps?

However I just wanted to ask: Did the writers ruin Marinette's character or make her OOC and act like Marinette from salt fics by making her act like this in this season?It is a pretty common take I've come across so I really am curious to know.

Although, I'm not sure to understand your question there. For me, they went with what they consider Marinette would have done given the context, the experience and the informations she has as well as her interpretation of said informations.
They went with what she would do considering :
Chat Noir and her are not immune to akumatization (ep : Chameleon and Ladybug, she herself almost got akumatized, ep : Chat Blanc, she witnessed and faced the end-result of an akumatized Chat Noir).
She lost the support of her mentor, friend and confidant, meaning she could lose other people dear to her too.
There could also be times where Chat Noir is unavailable to help her (Style Queen, Mr Pigeon 72) while she has now permanent and direct access to the Miracle Box via her yoyo and can get any ally on the spot herself.
As Ladybug, she is the only one who can repair the damages, but there are also things she cannot fix.
She became unexpectly the Guardian of the Miracle Box and has to juggle with those tasks alongside her other responsibilities and life in general.

Really, I like the analogy that could be made with her Magical Charms. They were not the solution to defeat SM. They were just meant to buy her some time. Some peace of mind. But they weren't enough. They only gave her the illusion that it was helpful. But she never tried to tackle the real problem this season.

Dreaming Wide Awake - Ch 11
PREVIEW:
Adrien was back in the white room, back on the floor, crunched up in a ball with his hands pressed to the sides of his head. He was lucid enough to know this was a dream, that this wasn’t really happening – that he’d gone to bed feeling better than he had in weeks.
So why was he here again?
As before, the dream within a dream filled his mind. The world was washed in the red of rust – the red of neglect – the red of rage. The buildings, the Eiffel Tower – everything had been brought to its knees. And Marinette hung dead in his arms. Only, this time, her image flickered, another image bleeding through.
Ladybug.
A scream climbed up his throat, finding its way out when a hand touched his shoulder, drawing him back to the room. If not for those ice blue eyes, he might not have even seen Cat Blanc. His costume, his bell, his hair…all of it was the same white as the floor he crouched on.
Adrien scrambled backwards until he hit a wall. With nowhere else to go, he pressed himself against it, trembling, as his alter crawled towards him, his movements like a real cat.
Cat Blanc hunched before him, only a foot away, a permanent smirk on his pale face. ‘We killed them both.’
Adrien swallowed. Words wouldn’t form. His mind had gone as blank as the room.
‘We killed them with this.’ Cat lifted one of his gloved hands, inspecting the claws. ‘And with this.’ He put his fist to his chest, indicating his heart – the anger he carried inside.
The anger I hold inside.
Because Cat Blanc was him. He was his potential. Each time he looked in the mirror, this was who peeked out of the edges, waiting to come out. And now, he’d done it.
Cat grinned, like another famous cat. Only, this was no Wonderland. ‘That’s right. Here I am. And we killed them – Marinette and Ladybug. Our fury hurt the people we love most.’
With a whimper, Adrien folded over. With the vision so clear in his head, he was bending over Marinette’s body – Ladybug’s body – Marinette’s body again. Even now, he held such a kaleidoscope of emotions inside. And he understood. He understood….
‘You know why you were akumatised.’
Adrien lifted his head slowly, meeting his alter’s stare. ‘I have no self-control.’

Marinette and Luka?
Luka, like I was saying for kagami I think the alternate love interests were a stupid idea and I don't like luka outside of feluka stuff. I only liked him in wishmaker and I hated him in ephemeral but the colour theory feluka fics have made me somewhat like him. Tho unlike adrigami I try to avoid lukanette like the plague cuz I dislike the ship so much
Marinette (I'm assuming Canon tho I use Marinette for PV too, Ill answer for PV in a separate ask if anyone wants to hear it kshskshs)
, yes I am camp Marinette was awful in season 4, just like nearly every other character but up until kuro neko I related to adrien so Marinette being awful ticked me off the most and I felt nothing for her crying in the finale so ye and it's not like 'oh she didn't tell chat that she told rena her identity' or 'oh she threw chat in the trash in glaciator 2 how could she' cuz those are nothing arguments, it's stuff like not telling him about rena furtive or chat blanc (which yes he needed to know about) or being upfront about the su han thing or what the hell she was thinking in crocoduel by asking juleka to leave luka out of his own birthday (no level of 'oh she has trouble understanding other peoples emotions' will save you from that). Also her falling for cat walker when he's acting 'the way he does with his father' felt gross, left a nasty taste in my mouth.
Also I know there's an argument that 'oh Chat is an awful partner so it makes absolute sense she shouldn't tell him anything' but that doesn't work because that's not what the show thinks or what the characters think, Ladybug is clearly supposed to think chat noir is a good partner overall in the story and 'chat is awful so he shouldn't be told anything' is too much of a meta reason that doesn't work in the story with the characters stated opinions. At least that's my take.
And finally I didn't put actively dislike since I do care about Marinette and feel like her character can be easily fixed cuz all the necessary pieces are there in the way they just aren't for Adrien.

So with Bell The Cat I've obviously had to tweak the character's power sets a little since its a Fantasy AU. Chat Blanc is still Chat Blanc in that his power of destruction is devastating, but for obvious reasons I can't have him blowing up the entire world and the moon.
So instead of that, this fic starts with Chat Blanc destroying his own world as he knew it. Because of events prior to this fic, this action eseentially has the same effect for him as obliterating the whole world in one go, because the one he had been existing in was so small. But because of a certian Ladybug, we know that broken things have a chance at being fixed.
The empty silence was broken by the sound of stone crumbling somewhere once again, disintegrating into debris and crashing over ash-stained marble. He didn’t even twitch at the noise. The sound of the world falling apart was almost comforting as he lay there, staring up at the black sky above him.
The only thing suspended in the void above him was the moon, full and bright but framed by the ruins of his destruction. What had perhaps once been one of the many tall windows was now just a warped and broken metal frame, cutting up into the sky above him and fracturing the pale light he’d been left with. He slowly reached out his hand above him, stretching his claws and splitting that light further.
It was over now. He knew that. In one brief moment he had traded the ice cold water that drowned him for the hot rush of blood that soaked him. He could still see it now on his claws, those ruby rivulets that were slowly drying and staining as the world kept on falling apart.
