okay so! good news! potentially best of news given the situation I went downstairs to sniff around and didn't smell the hot plastic smell at all furnace has been off now for like. four? hours? probably less, but still. it's been off. and now the smell is gone. so it was most likely coming from the furnace and not from the breaker box! it's still not great and we still have to get the furnace looked at/find the source of the smell because it's still vermont winter and we can't not have heat - we have plug-in heaters and blankets and clothes but that's not good enough forever - but we're not likely to have an electrical fire in the middle of the night! it does make sense, it would be weird (but not impossible) to have both a fire in a duct off the furnace and something happening with the breaker box across the room

#charlie babbles #also while neighbor was down there trying to solve the problem he took apart a couple of the cold ducts to see why some rooms don't get hea #he did not discover a reason #we've just been assuming the ancient long-unserviced furnace had faulty blowers and trying to get government funding to get it replaced #which will hopefully still be possible #but yeah bad news is we can't afford to get it looked at so here's hoping neighbor has a connection

I smelled hot plastic smell again and panic-called the neighbor. he didn't answer so I went down and poked around. I did smell the smell, but I smelled it down there before too. Nothing on or around the furnace felt hot or warm except right in front of where the pilot light is and directly above that, which makes sense. No hot wires or ducts. I'm hoping it's just lingering and some wind came through the drafty downstairs door and that's why I smelled it. Left the door open and I'll deal with him potentially returning the missed call later. I'm so so scared of house fire. Big fear. We have so much stuff and it would suck to lose that but more importantly it's a hindrance to locating our cats if something did happen.

furnace successfully cleaned. the guy did say hey you need to get that replaced and we said yeah we're trying but the government either won't help as long as it's working or has us on a wait list and he said yeah well keeping it limping along is worse and I'm thinking. buddy. this little maintenance/cleaning call was less than $200 and we're doing a payment plan for it I'd love to hear how you think we'd pay for a new furnace. he also said we need to get the chimney cleaned but that's according to him another $175-$250. so. but hey it's almost no more furnace time for the year so we'll get through and I guess try to put some money aside over the warm months to get things done next fall

we lost an entire bar of soap today, somehow.

mom unwrapped it and set it on the sink last night, and when she woke up it was nowhere.

not in behind below or next to the sink. not in the trash can laundry basket bathroom cupboards, not behind or around the toilet or in the shower.

not in her pocket or on her bedside table or in her bed or on the kitchen counter or floor, or anywhere else it could've ended up had she wandered around carrying it without realizing.

none of the cats are acting weird or sick or even reacted to the wrapper like I imagine they would've if something in the soap had smelled good enough for them to jump on the sink and steal the bar.

it's gone. it's no longer exists. it ceased to be.

I am excited for craftchat tomorrow despite the anxiety (new people, video call) because I haven't done anything creative in so long, and I picked up some air-dry clay and that's gonna be fun to play with

#charlie babbles #'what effort?' you may find yourself asling. well #I have to febreze my mattress and make my bed #I have to find clothes and towels #I have to empty the bathroom which has many a thing and find and bring in the portable heater #I have to brush my hair then wash my hairbrush because my hair is greasy #then there's the actual showering itself and the mental toll of knowing the water from my shower WILL come up in the basement #which is why I don't shower much and why it becomes a fucking. ordeal every time

lmaooo my neighbor's friend accidentally stole my shoes. we have a bin downstairs of things the cats peed on that I have to wash and that included a pair of sneakers, and when they worked on the plumbing the other day he grabbed them thinking they were my neighbor's? but neighbor texted mom this morning like hey uh...did you have shoes downstairs? cause these aren't mine. so he's going to drop them off.
