ELECTRIC BUSES AND ELECTRIC TRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As cold weather sweeps across the U.S., some electric vehicle owners are learning a bitter truth: Low temperatures can stop the cars dead in their icy tracks.
The issue crystallized this week when some Tesla owners in Chicago discovered their EVs' batteries had died in sub-zero temperatures. Drivers also said some of Tesla charging stations weren't working, or if they did work that the stations were taking longer than usual to charge up their vehicles.
“I've been here for over five hours at this point, and I still have not gotten to charge my car,” Tesla driver Brandon Welbourne told CBS Chicago. “A charge that should take 45 minutes is taking two hours.”
What happens to electric vehicles in cold weather?
Here's what to know.
Electric vehicles are less efficient in cold weather, with Recurrent's research finding that below-freezing temperatures reduced driving range up to 30% on 18 popular EV models.
An EV with a 200 to 215 mile range may only go 150 to 175 miles in the cold, Recurrent's Case said, while noting even that reduced mileage is often sufficient for most drivers. “The average person with an EV drives 30 miles a day,” he said.
Still, a shorter range in cold weather could be an issue for some owners if their EV runs out of juice miles earlier than expected, potentially leaving to hunt for an available charger or, worse, stranded in dangerously frigid conditions.
....today I learned that you have to pay to charge an electric vehicle at one of those charging stations. I just assumed it was free. I have a masters degree.
Nyobolt EV Concept, 2023. An electric sports car prototype designed by Julian Thomson based on the first generation Lotus Elise engineered by Callum with battery tech by Nyobolt that has a claimed charge time of 6 minutes. Nyobolt has revealed new battery technology that is smaller, lighter and faster to charge. In the Nyobolt EV, set to weigh close to one tonne, this translates into a 35kWh battery that is capable of fully charging in 6 minutes with existing charging infrastructure, delivering a range of up to 250km. Nyobolt claims that its battery will enter production in early 2024 and is “ready to be adopted” across the automotive industry.
we can romanticize astigmatism as a treat i think. maybe i like when the city at night looks like a field of luminous dandelions and disco balls instead of discrete points of light. tbh people w normal eyes are missing out
Okay i have yet to see a post about this that isnt filled with ppl being Annoying as Fuck on it, but,
theyve found wreckage of the submersible, it imploded (thank god, thats better than a drawn out suffocation over the course of several days, implosion means it was pretty much instantaneous) and the us navy have revealed they heard a weird sound on sunday from about where communication with the sub was lost, that was probably the sound of the implosion, [implied that they didnt say anything cos they didnt want to jump to conclusions without evidence of a wreckage, if there was a chance they were still alive.] no idea what the banging sounds were.
I do hope rescue efforts are extended to the migrants off the coast of greece, and am angry and horrified at their mistreatment, and that the media clearly cares less for their fates than that of the billionaires on the sub.
also, while i have you here,
The difference between a submersible and a submarine is not that one is safer. The titan was a submersible that was unsafe, but that is not because it was a submersible.
A submarine (or sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater.
A submersible is a watercraft designed to operate underwater, usually supported by a nearby surface vessel, platform, shore team or sometimes a larger submarine.
submarines generally dont go as deep as our deepest submersibles, but some can be down there for months at a time bc it is like. a self sufficient Ship. not all submersibles can go crazy deep, but to my knowledge, the only crewed vessels that can go that deep, are submersibles. (Alvin, deepsea challenger, limiting factor, trieste, fendouzhe or "striver").
i have like. the strongest urge to make a COD Film Crew Au,,
like i can see Price as the director yk? Ghost as the director of photography (camera man). im. screaming. Gaz as the key grip (handles the rigging for the lights)? i know it's obvious to see Soap as the Art Director/Production designer but i can only see him as the gaffer (in charge of the lights)
and Laswell as the producer funding this whole mess production
Until you need to charge it and there isn't a station nearby.
Until the charging station nearby doesn't have the right plugs. (Like having the wrong charger for your phone, but instead it's a whole car.)
Until the charging station is broken.
Until the charging station is being used by someone else.
Until you forget to charge your car overnight.
Until the power goes out and you can't charge your car.
Until you have to drive in freezing temps without the heater because it immediately drops 10 miles off your range, and that 10 miles is what is making sure you get home.
I'm all for electric vehicles, but only if the infrastructure is there to make them practical.
I promised to be annoying about the games I play again, so here is my Subnautica update.
I haven't played the game for almost over a year, so when I came back I noticed a pinned blueprint. My husband did recognize it as the cyclops and together we found the materials for it (I had almost everything I needed but copper).
Then, after it was built, I looked at upgrades and noticed that I need Nickel. So I boarded my prawn suit and went to search for Nickel. It is fun decking the sea creatures in the face! Even the young leviathan at the blood kelp zone got decked into the face (but it mostly was interested in hunting other creatures).
What I couldn't find was Nickel.
What I instead found was an alien structure but I didn't have enough food and water with me for an investigation so I wanted to go back.
Only to notice that I got seriously lost! I had no clue where I came from anymore and I just couldn't find the way to my beacon back. My husband luckily noticed an exit (he knows the game very well) and maneuvered me out.
Only for the prawn to run out of energy like 500 metres away from the base! But prepared as I was, I did pack a Power Cell ^^
Well, that could have gone better... I will bring some beacons next time to find my way.
