Listen, I love going “the people of Camelot must’ve been so oblivious” just as much as the next person
But think about it
You’re living in a time of constant crisis. People are getting accused of magic, most of those people barely even know what magic looks like. People are killed, every day, just because they were accused of something they couldn’t disprove.
And in comes this young lad. This awfully cheery little man who takes his punishments with a smile and is slowly turning the future king into an actual person instead of some little spoiled twat. And everyone loves him. It’s the most joyous Camelot has been since the queen died.
And yes, maybe his eyes glow a little sometimes, and maybe things move on their own when he’s around, but he’s a good person and hes not hurting anyone, quite the opposite in fact.
So at a time where Merlin could’ve been killed if you said the wrong thing to the wrong person, nobody was gonna say a damn word because they did not want to see this boy, practically the one who kept the place running, the light of Camelot, burned at the stake.
They weren’t oblivious. They knew. They just refused to believe it, because if they did, then the great purge would most likely restart and Camelot could fall.

Writing Mordred is slowly making me realise I don’t actually hate him.
The more I think about it, the more I realise he’s just a traumatised child who felt trapped and ran out of options when every single person in his life who was supposed to help him failed in some way or others. Most in more than one way if we’re being honest.
The kid literally had no one to turn to when the girl he loved died and was openly hated by the guy he’s thought of as a god since he was a child.
Like let that sink in.
Merlin openly wished him dead, and Mordred literally worshipped the ground he walked on.
(I’m usually a Merlin apologist but bloody hell he fucked up at every opportunity when it came to Mordred)
Morgana was the exact opposite of his morals but wanted magic free, (at the cost of non magic users lives which is also problematic, but that’s a different conversation) so he didn’t stick around with her, but when Camelot no longer felt safe for him, he ran.
Which is definitely a trauma response considering how he grew up with the Druids and then whatever the fuck happened after he left them.
Arthur was the only person who was continuously good for him, saving him as a child and later becoming a brother/father figure, but then he killed Kara and Mordred had to watch another magic user be killed by Camelot except this time it was someone he truly believed was good. He didn’t see her attacking Arthur like she did, just that the king of Camelot was killing another magic user which was bound to bring up trauma that he hasn’t felt safe enough to unpack and heal from.
I have a lot more to say on this, but I’ve got to leave for work in a few minutes so I’ll come back and scream about it another time
Fucking Mordred though, poor kid. He really went through it.

as much as i hate uther, i don’t believe him to be homophobic. him and gaius definitely experimented when they were younger. i think it much funnier that uther doesn’t care that merlin’s a boy. yeah sure he’s a little stuck on the class difference (why on earth would arthur go for a servant???). but the thing that really sets him off, has him spitting with rage, is the sorcerer part.
he doesn’t care that his sons gay, he can even excuse the class difference, but he draws the LINE at sorcery

So i'm thinking-
Merlin is basically a show about everyone falling in love, adopting or trying to kill a scrawny pale clumsy boy who can change the weather at will

Merlin should've ended with Arthur going, "I know" when Merlin reveals his magic, AND HERE'S WHY
In Arthur's mind, magic is an act punishable by death— It's something that's been pushed onto him for years, with (almost) valid backing. After all, one of the few things he knew about his mother was that she died of magic.
Arthur is also the prince of Camelot, a kingdom that is pretty much notorious for its distrust and hatred for magic and all magic users. So in staying silent, Arthur not only is passively betraying his father and upbringing, he is also going against his own royal position and power over Camelot. His destiny.
So being silent about Merlin's magic betrays his teachings and his royal position. Blah blah blah, we've heard it all before. But there's more.
Arthur is very clearly a man that puts honour and loyalty above all else (as seen by his obedience to the Knight's Code). He's been raised with chivalry embedded into every word and sentence, so this act of deception should absolutely enrage him.
Because Merlin isn't a knight that he sees only for hunting and training, Merlin bathes and feeds and dresses him every single day. He is the closest person to Arthur possibly ever, so it only makes sense for Arthur to be outraged at this blatant act of betrayal.
But he isn't.
Sure, he may have been at some point in time, but the important thing is that he still stayed silent.
And THAT'S why Arthur knowing about Merlin's magic could've been so good. Because Arthur isn't just betraying his father and his kingdom and his entire fucking destiny for Merlin, he is also betraying himself.
His unshakable morals, his unwavering standards for loyalty— He throws all that away for Merlin.
Arthur knowing about Merlin's magic adds nuance and substance to his character. No longer is he a prince who is naive and also apparently selectively blind and deaf, he is a prince who is willing to go against everything he's ever learned and who he is for the people—the man— he loves.
And it also shows how he loves. We all know that Arthur has problems with communicating affection like a normal person, but having him know Merlin's magic gives him a way of bypassing that emotional blockage by showing that he has other ways of showing his love.
Because despite his taunts and jabs, Arthur still hides Merlin's biggest secret from everyone, even Merlin himself. He lives his entire life staying quiet about a secret that could ruin both him and Merlin, because that's how Arthur Pendragon loves—Quietly.
Anyways that was my rant bc I was pissed off at the ending again for the fourth time today lol

Day 20: King Vortigern
Vortigern was an early villain of Arthurian legend, ruling before Uther Pendragon.
He didn’t become king by birth; while Constans, the eldest brother of Uther, was king, Vortigern secured a marriage into royalty. As King Constans was still quite young, Vortigern installed himself as the king’s advisor, and conspired to have the young king killed.
Constan’s younger brothers, Aurelius Ambrosius and Uther Pendragon, were children at the time, so once Constans was dead Vortigern seized the crown for himself and ruled with a tyrannical fist.

Alright I want feedback about this.
I have a strong inclination that Morgana was not originally written as Uther’s daughter, but was added when they came back for season 3. What do you guys think?
