I know it’s a cut line but Victor comparing Benny’s name to “Bunny” is so condescending and makes so much more sense than calling him fancy pants like he does in game proper.

Victor is a creation of House and his personal spy bot for the Courier and inadvertently Benny. Knowing how patronizing House can be I can imagine it’s a hated in joke between House and Benny that whenever Benny asks too many questions or is being combative House would tell him to hop along and purposely mispronounce his name as “Bunny”. Him adding it to the more personalitied Securitrons is a petty thing he would do.

Bonus irritation on Benny’s part if you imagine he adopting the name Benny at House’s behest and now it’s being used to mock him.

It's a lot worse on twt I will say. Like, half the fandom has the other half blocked purely bc you're only allowed to fully be in love with izzy to an uncomfortable extent and victimize him (which, no, he's a terrible person? That's kind of the point?) or hate him and call all of his fans horrible people (which, a lot of them are tbf but 1. So are some of the haters and 2. they tend to lump the apologists in w/ people like me who consider him one of my favs bc he's like, an interesting character to study). You're allowed to like a character AND want to punch him in the face. The ideas can coexist. He is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER.

HI. WELCOME TO THE CLUB, watch the trigger warnings. but yeah, revolutionary girl utena veers more and more towards surrealism the further you get into the series. it often and voluntarily forfeits narrative/logical consistency in favor of visual storytelling, metaphors and symbolism. i was just talking about it with nic the other day, and if the story weren't so harrowing, i would recommend it to everyone who wants to get into literary analysis, because it is SO packed with symbolism EVERYWHERE that it actually encourages you to try to decode it.

whatever you think utena is about, it is NOT. you can't go in and treat it like your 49293th classical shoujo. utena is a firework show of visual symbolism and it very rarely, if ever, explains itself to the viewer. it refuses to handhold you, but it never berates you for trying and getting it wrong either. there is SO much handholding in modern day media, but utena trusts its viewer to take away something meaningful from itself and to piece its message together on their own. it's one of my favourite pieces of media of all time just for that

#it's almost closer to a poem and to poetry than to a story in the sense that we think think about today #you see why ye standard transformative fandom was never able to take hold with utena? #my suggestion is try to actively analyze what's going on and the symbols presented to you as you go along #find recurring motifs. utena deals a LOT with cycles and repetition (they were playing into their budget limitations and did it brilliantly #what objects keep returning. what characters are they associated with. how do they relate to the irl systems of power the story criticizes #what does the white rose mean #^ had a lot of fun trying to figure that one out. i landed on something other people in the fandom also got but then nic told me his take #and yeah they basically pried my third eye open with a crowbar. #this anime made me want to try out symbolism and allegories in my own works #it's so fucking good #but hey if you finish it and still feel like you didn't get 90% of that you can go to nic metanarrates' blog and check out his rgu tag #basically 50% of the fandom posts are visual and narrative analysis. the other 10% is breathtaking art. the remaining 40% is memes #BUT! wait until you're finished..watch for spoilers #rgu #answered asks

Red Son is drawn as Toko here. Toko is a character who is one alter in a 2-alter system. The other alter in Toko’s system is an infamous and violent serial murderer. It’s all, like. Horrifyingly ableist. A literal caricature of systems.

Literally every system that I know is VIOLENTLY uncomfortable with this art. Especially since this person is presumably a singlet. So yeah

I just have to say this. You have this big analysis on how Guys and Griffith are gay for each other but there's something that really disturbs me about this. Both Guts and Griffith are based on Moira and his best friend Mori. So reading them as gay has really uncomfortable implications. Like I'm not denying the homoerotic tension between them but actual sexual attraction? That's a bit too uncomfortable for me

it's not real, they're extremely loosely inspired by that friendship to the point where Miura has said he swaps who he identifies with more based on how successful he's feeling, and Miura has cited many other inspirations as well, including bl manga and some of his gay friends, fun fact.

but most importantly idc lol, they could be named Miura and Mori and I'd still ship them. And if Miura didn't want that, he should've made them less homoerotic.

What are your thoughts on Vylad and Hyria’s dynamic?

I think Vylad and Hyria deserve an entire episode that's about them sitting around Hyria's cottage drinking tea. I always imagined Hyria found Vylad when he ran away from O'Khasis after becoming a Shadow Knight. He stumbled into the cursed forest, and though Hyria could tell he had a foul, evil magic in his body, she also saw the tearful face of a young boy taken too early. She sees an innocence that's on the verge of total corruption about to be eaten away at by dark magic.

She sees Araphel. She sees Irene. She sees a poor young boy too scared to admit the truth to himself. She sees her friend Zianna's son who just died crying on the forest floor after he nearly collapsed with exhaustion.

She's reminded of the daughter who just left her out of anger. She sees a second chance.

I think it took both of them a lot of growing pains and adjustment time. Vylad was likely hostile to anyone but Zianna acting as his mother figure, and Hyria was hostile to the idea of actually learning to care for this kid beyond helping him not accidentally kill himself. I think there were a lot of days where they barely said a word to each other, or got in arguments bad enough that Vylad slammed the door, climbed out of the window, and ran off to get lost in the woods knowing that Hyria would drag him back.

But over time they learned to care for one another. They bonded over a shared love and adoration of Zianna. Vylad asked Hyria about herbal blends for healing and maybe helping with Shadow Knight symptoms. Hyria helped Vylad learn other languages from her old ass books because he had a genuine interest. Maybe she taught them the wyvern language.

Also speaking of Zianna, I think she visited Hyria still. I think Hyria told Vylad whenever Zianna was approaching the cottage and covered for their escape. I think Vylad finally opened up to Hyria about how badly the calling has been effecting him after Zianna visited the first time and he ran away. Hyria then did everything she could to help him control it, himself, and restrain them if necessary. Vylad told her to keep them in the forest until he could control the calling, and she did just that.

It was only once Vylad had matured, come into his own as a proper adult and learned to control and cope with this new form he had that Hyria let him go. She never said it directly to him, but one day when Vylad was practicing archery and thievery in the forest, he stumbled out near Nahakra Village. They were allowed to do whatever they wanted, go where they wanted, and when Vylad decided to return to the cottage that had become his home, Hyria let him in.

And whatever prompted her to think it was needed, when Hyria decided the world needed Irene, she knew there was one person she trusted to dictate who needed her the most. She's never called Vylad her son, and he's never called her mom outside of a single slip of the tongue, but they don't need to. That's how she views him, forever and always.

I just . Repeating "characters are tools" you end up erasing so much about arashi's character and motivations and interactions with other characters if you avoid using her pronouns aka avoid showing she's transgender. It's on the same level of frustration with the translators i had when i saw they had Mika speaking standard English, there's a LOT that gets lost if you don't show those little things.

#and sure maybe some things wouldn't matter bc - i don't read many knights stories so beyond what's mentioned ab arashi in stories i've read #like those featuring mika and such #so i can't say for her but i can say for mika - because a lot of it is touched upon in ! which isn't getting translated #mika talks about his accent and dialect and such the most in ! HOWEVER #you still have idol story 3 where he talks with Tsumugi about how people perceive him because of his accent and #about how he feels like he's letting people down by not conforming to the positive stereotypes associated with his speech #and if you make him speak the standard language you completely lose that layer #if you erase the fact that Arashi is transgender you completely lose that layer of her characterisation and motivations #she literally has a story in !! where she talks about how much it hurts her to always be cast as the male character #in princess-knight themed shoots when all she wants to be is the princess #but how are you gonna get the full context of that if the story refuses to give you the context you had in the original #ie. that Arashi uses the (hyper)feminine ''atashi'' pronoun and that her speech pattern is one associated with young women #in ! she has a line where she asks i believe koga to not use the slur used for effeminate/gay men for her #because her name is arashi narukami and if anything she wants to be called arashi-chan or naruko #which is also additional context lost if you don't translate it right - the -ko suffix in a name is traditionally feminine #i'm no expert either but i'm a writer and i plan on working as a translator #and these are things that - if lost in translation - will impact your understanding of the entire story and/or character #whether it will have you completely misunderstanding it or just being confused is irrelevant but it's like #in my opinion as a translator it's your duty to translate even the subtext #if you need to show that arashi is transgender you don't need to say it (even tho #she did once say ''i will never be the woman i want to be'' iirc and #i do have recollection of mika telling her ''i don't really get it but you're a girl right?'') #but you should give us the same chance to come to the same conclusions which is to say. translate naruko to the best of your abilities. #idfk Nary maybe ? i feel like the -y ending is usually diminutive rather than feminine but. #something to that tune. and give her a girly speech pattern. it exists in english too. #slang can be associated with gender too #like you guys get it right.
