Chadar ‘ECO’ Trek

JULLEY, the region that I am going to talk about and is known to the globe as Zanskar is located towards the south-east of Leh and is enclosed by the Himalayan, Zanskar ranges and mountains that border Zanskar and Kashmir valley. Two years have passed since I trekked the Chadar, and even now when I think about it, I get shivers down my spine. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, The Zanskar river in Ladakh freezes on the surface in winter months and turns into a Chadar or a blanket of ice.

To face the life’s reality was quite creepy! Yeah you step on ice and it cracks, think about the feel. I only think about walking on the ice is that you respect (check & walk) them, they save you, else you fall. Somehow, I managed to survive the chilling temperature ranges between -10°C to -30°C throughout the day.

Eye Catching View!

The penguin walk is the right walk on the thick ice of Zanskar River.

So, the best lesson that I have learned from the trek comes when I was returning from our destination point i.e. Nerak Waterfall (Frozen Waterfall) to Tibb Cave (camp location), we all were resting outside the camp; it was a very tiring day as we almost trekked around 8 kms that day. Suddenly, one of the porters (A localite of Zanskar Village) said “Bhaiya ji, Sab log yaha aata hai aur ganda karke chala jaata h! Aise toh Chadar Trek bahut jaldi bandh ho jayegi” means “Everyone comes here and litter! If it will be like this then chadar trek will end soon”.  And this line touched my soul, it made me feel like I can connect and be a part of nature. This is the gift which I can give to this paradise on earth and I can proudly say; I did something to help the world in Go Green.

A Porter.

I gathered all my fellow trekkers and explained the same. They all were enthralled and excited by the idea to clean the place, some steps towards the nature with our little efforts. Just to imagine how we managed the waste collection on our trek, I am sharing some pictures.

We were 14 members team and collected waste of around 20 kgs. We were not only trekkers; we were not only there for entertainment or fun, but we were sincerely following the “Swacch Bharat Abhiyan”.

And that is why I can proudly name this trek Chadar ‘ECO’ Trek instead of just Chadar Trek.

My experience was petrifying but the trek was an experience of a lifetime. It taught me, as a trekker/person IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP THE SURROUNDINGS NEAT & CLEAN DOESN’T MATTER WHEREVER YOU ARE.
