Derek is in the kitchen humming while he washes dishes and Cora wants to know—“Who are you and what have you done with my brother?”
“Damn it gremlin!” Derek snaps, startled. “I’ll have you know that I am still me.”
“Yeah. I mean you look like my brother and well, I would know. After all, I see the female you when I look in the mirror but this whole thing going on with your face is like way more intense than usual. Someone had a good date then.”
Derek’s ears darken and his cheeks flush. “It was really good, Cora. He’s…” he trails off, smiling dopily. “He’s amazing.”
Cora smiles and snags a banana. “So…” she trails off.
“I really like him, Cora-Bear,” Derek whispers.
The raw emotion in his voice combined with her childhood nickname, tells Cora everything she needs to know. She kisses her brother’s cheek and then hops up on the counter. “Okay. So, are you guys dating? Are you going to see him again? Do I need to give him the shotgun talk?”
“No talk but…” Derek nods. “Yeah. We’re going to go to a movie this weekend and dinner Wednesday night. He also said I can stop by work whenever. If that all goes well, then we’ll have dinner at the diner with the kids.”
“Wow. That’s amazing, Der.”
Derek grins as he puts the dishes in the cupboard. “Thanks gremlin.” He leans back against the sink. “I can’t believe we can finally stay here.”
Cora tosses the banana peel in the trash and sends a smile in his direction. “Me too. No offense to the hotel but I wanted to be here in our house. So, what’s he like?”
“Wouldn't you like to know?”
“Uh, yes! Hence why I asked little bro.”
“Well that’s for me to know and you to find out.”
Cora pouts. “I will find out.”
Derek smirks. “I’m sure you will. In time.”
They stare at each other, each waiting for the other to concede but Cora breaks first. “Oh fine you spoil sport. As long as he’s nothing like Ashley and he’s not because he actually showed up, then I approve.”
Derek sobers and nods in agreement. “Yeah. He’s definitely nothing like Ashley.”

Past: Six Years Ago
Derek is running late for work and hurriedly locks his door only to come to a full stop on his front porch when he notices a basket. He hears a soft cry and realizes there is a baby in the basket. He sees an envelope on top and picks it up.
When he opens the letter, he finds a birth certificate, official relinquishing of parental rights paperwork and a note. It takes a moment to sink in and he leans down to scoop up the baby, while the words of the letter swirl in his mind.
𝙳𝚎𝚊𝚛 𝙳𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚔,

𝙰𝚗𝚢𝚠𝚊𝚢, 𝚑𝚊𝚙𝚙𝚢 𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐!
- 𝙰𝚜𝚑
He sways back and forth with the baby to help keep him asleep. The letter is from a one night stand he had a little over a year ago. The baby can’t be more than six months old. He makes an executive decision to take the bus to the hospital.
On the way there he calls Cora and then calls his boss.
The hospital nurse takes his blood and the baby’s blood to test the DNA. Then, they leave him cradling the baby in one of the rooms. He doesn’t know how much time passes between them drawing blood and getting the results but when he hears that this little six month old baby boy is really and truly his, nothing else matters.
“Hey little one. I’m your daddy,” he whispers, brushing the knuckle of his index finger against the baby’s cheek as he sways, uncaring of the tears slipping down his cheeks. Derek’s son—his SON—is perfect.
“Mr. Hale?” a voice says from the doorway.
Derek tilts his head in acknowledgment but doesn’t take his eyes off of his son. “Hm?”
“Mr. Hale!” the voice snaps.
This makes Derek tense and look over. “Yes?”
A short, plump woman stands staring him down, or trying to. “My name is Sara Lewis. I work for Child Protective Services.”
Derek holds his son closer. “I see. What can I help you with?”
She smirks and opens her mouth to answer but falters when Cora pushes past her in a hurry. “I’m Mr. Hale’s lawyer. Here are the forms proving this child is his. Here are copies of the birth certificate and documents clearly showing that the mother chose to sign her rights away. If you feel the need to further press your luck, you can call our main branch. As for me and Mr. Hale, we’ll be leaving now.”
Derek watches the whole thing in amused appreciation and when Cora ushers him out of the room, he quickly goes and they head to her car. “Thank you, Cora.”
She gestures to the backseat where a car seat is all ready to go for the baby. “You’re welcome. Let’s go home.”
As they drive to Derek’s home, he can’t take his eyes off the sleeping baby. “He’s perfect. Have you ever seen anything more perfect?”
Cora grins as they pull up to the house. “Never.” She turns off the car and turns to look at her brother, both of them ignoring the For Sale sign in the yard and what that could have meant if they’d already moved when the baby was abandoned.
🐾╰☆╮🍃╰☆╮🍃╰☆╮🐾
Derek is never far from his son whom he names Ezekiel. Cora offers to drive the car up since hers was a rental and he gratefully accepts, eager to begin their lives in Atlanta, Georgia. Derek has been offered a job as a kindergarten teacher and it’s even better now that he knows there’s a daycare as well.
Little Zeke grows up in Atlanta and is so much like his daddy. He’s all smiles and giggles. Derek has never been happier and when he gets another, better, job offer for a teaching position in Charlottesville, Virginia, a month after Zeke’s sixth birthday, he eagerly accepts.
Zeke picks out the color pastel green for his bedroom walls and gets bedding with tigers on it for his bed. They make their house a home just like they did in Atlanta, only this time Zeke has a bigger hand in how things look.
It’s nearly the middle of August when they are finally settled in. They’ll have to spend a couple nights at a hotel while the electric company makes their final check but otherwise they’re all set.
It’s while they’re trying to choose a movie that Zeke asks a fateful question. “Daddy, can we go play here?”
Derek looks at the tablet to see what his son is asking about. He’s surprised but exchanges a look with Cora, the both of them smiling.
“Please, Daddy? It looks like a lot of fun.”
Cora grins at her brother and Derek can’t help it when he says, “I don’t see why not.” He takes a seat next to Zeke and looks at the website. “Let’s see just what Howlin' Heights is.”

❝ Marisol Crúz is a woman seeking justice. Specifically, she seeks justice against Harlan Maddox, a corrupt Las Vegas casino owner who, just a little over a year ago, had been found to rig his slot machines and who had scammed his customers out of a collective ten million dollars. But Maddox, being rich enough to cheat the justice system, had not received the punishment he deserved, and so Marisol is determined to drain the bastard’s bank account and give the stolen money back to Maddox’s victims. And as the wealthy CEO of a large tech conglomerate, inherited from her father when it was only a tiny startup, she certainly has the riches and resources to do it. But in order to pull off her plan properly, she’s going to need a team - one consisting of highly skilled individuals who will be the best choices to help Marisol hand down her justice.
CeCe Gomez has been Marisol’s best friend since the two of them were small (and a little bit more than that in high school, but that’s in the past). She’s also a certified badass, a former US Marine who was honourably discharged due to a shoulder injury and who now acts as a martial arts instructor in the heart of New York City. CeCe has always been willing to go along with Marisol’s crazy schemes, but the two of them lost contact several years ago and haven’t heard from each other since. But when her old friend’s lawyer visits her gym and asks if she’d be willing to join a team Marisol is assembling, of course CeCe’s answer is yes. She’s never been good at saying no to Marisol Crúz.
Zeke Rojas is a born and bred conman, but he hasn’t wanted to be for some time. He’s been disillusioned with the life of a liar and a cheat since he was seventeen years old, which was kind of a hard thing to be when his entire family consisted of the most accomplished con artists in Chile. He finally got out of the family “business” four years ago, fleeing to the United States in the middle of the night and leaving no trace of himself behind, but it hasn’t been easy to go straight when the only skills he’s ever been taught are cheating and stealing. He’s working the cold streets of Chicago, picking pockets and trying desperately to get a real, steady job, when he’s approached by the personal lawyer of the young CEO of CrúzTech, offering him a chance to finally use his talents for good.
Charlie Kellman has had a lifelong fascination with everything that goes boom, but being an economically-challenged bundle of social anxiety and possible undiagnosed autism hasn’t exactly provided him with many opportunities to use his demolition skills in legal ways. Not that that’s an excuse for assisting in four bank robberies, he knows it’s not, but also the robbers were all very nice and he doesn’t really have any friends, so it was nice to find some people he could hang out with while also being useful. That is, until the cops came upon the most recent robbery and the others completely ditched him, leaving Charlie to run from the law while alone once again. He’s still running when Marisol Crúz’s lawyer finds him, offering to get him an official pardon in exchange for joining some kind of Robin Hood team where he’ll get to use his explosives for an actual good cause. Getting to be around a group of people, no longer worrying about getting arrested, and being allowed to blow stuff up? It’s practically Charlie’s dream deal, how is he supposed to refuse?
Eva Carmichael knows she’s a talented singer. She’s known it from a very young age, and she desperately wants other people to know it too. But without the dough to make connections and properly promote herself, it’s extremely hard to break onto the New York music scene. And apparently Marisol Crúz, a badass young CEO whom Eva has always admired, knows she’s talented as well, because she wants Eva to be her “in” for a heist she’s planning by getting a job as a singer in a Las Vegas casino. It’s not exactly the big break Eva was expecting, but at this point, she’s willing to do pretty much anything to get her talent out there. Plus, she’s sure as hell not going to pass up a free trip to Sin City.
Logan Wilder is a self-proclaimed “hacking vigilante,” using his considerable computer skills to hack into the financial systems of corrupt businesses and give money back to their swindled customers. He’s also a white hat hacker, doing people a favour by breaking into various security systems to pinpoint their weaknesses and informing the owners about them, but either way, he’s never been on the right side of the law. That’s why he’s in a cold holding cell with a rock-hard bench when some lawyer dude he did not call for comes to visit him, proclaiming that Marisol freaking Crúz wants to utilize his skills to pull off a heist in Vegas in exchange for getting all the charges against him dropped. It’s basically a chance for Logan to continue his mission on a much larger scale, plus it gets him off of this awful bench that’s made his ass completely numb by this point, so of course he agrees.
Now assembled, Marisol’s team makes their way to America’s City of Lights, ready and willing to pull off their plan. In two weeks, Harlan Maddox will be hosting a gala in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of his biggest and best casino - the perfect opportunity for the team to strike. And so, putting Marisol’s scheme into action, the team slowly infiltrates Maddox’s business, getting Eva a job performing at the gala in addition to getting CeCe hired as Maddox’s new bodyguard and Logan as the casino’s new IT manager.
The plan seems to be going off without a hitch, but of course it wouldn’t go exactly according to plan. As Logan spends more time around Jack, Maddox’s sweet but overworked assistant, he begins to doubt the fairness of taking all the money away from a man who has people on his payroll. In addition, Marisol has been keeping a secret from the team about why she wants justice against Maddox in the first place - one that may destroy their trust in her if it comes to light.
As the night of the gala, and the heist, draws nearer, the team, who have all become something of a family to each other these last two weeks, begin to wonder: will they be able to pull off this plan after all, or will the heist, and their newly-found connections with it, come crashing apart?
Either way, what happens in Vegas is not going to stay in Vegas. Not this time. ❞

Zeke understood that he was only sitting in the precinct with handcuffs on to 'teach him a lesson' but what sheriff Edwards hadn't realized was that there was no teaching him anything. The older man was writing out another form to put into his criminal record, this vandalism charge being the saddest of all the ones he had gotten, "really sheriff? Are you really that annoyed with me tagging the grocery store? At least this time I didn't take another car," he knew how to fuck with the old man and if Zeke could get a rise out of him, good for him. Sitting back in the chair, he sighed as his eyes spotted a face he didn't recognize, who hadn't belonged in the police office, but she just kept walking towards him. Was this the universe for giving him something back after taking away his momentary freedom?

Heart of Stone - ch 5
A few evenings passed and "later" came, finally; Unsuur headed across the tracks starting from the end of main street and then kept going.   Out this way was the ever-present sand dunes and scrub grass, some yakthorn and yellow lavender bushes, and one of the dry box trees that had managed to hold on in the arid climate; not far from that tree was the first of a series of sharp drop offs leading to landings of flat stone, with a narrow path winding between them all that led to the edge of one the bottomless canyons that had once had Old World buildings spanning across the gap.  Unsuur liked to come out here and sit, let his legs dangle over the edge (the edge near that box tree, anyway -- he wasn't about to put himself in a situation where he could fall to his death that easily), watch the sunset and sometimes he'd stack rocks out here too.
In fact, hints of his last stack were still here, partially buried under a mound of sand and just barely visible in the sunset's fading light.  He plopped himself down next to the mound and began to trail his hand through it, picking out the rocks and generally enjoying the feel of the sand grains sifting between his fingers; he found it oddly soothing -- a good starting point to quiet his mind when he wanted to create a new stack. ((Continued below cut))
It was proving to be a lot harder to quiet his thoughts tonight though; off and on over the last few days he'd tried to logically think his way through this crush of his -- was it a crush?  Was it just a misunderstanding born out of finally meeting someone who seemed to get him more than others did?  Would this just go away in a few days or weeks or months?
Trying to think through it kept circling him back to just thinking about Dawn, which was distracting but also enjoyable but also REALLY distracting.  She was pretty, and smart, and liked rocks like he did, he looked forward to seeing and talking to her, and she definitely had to be stronger than she looked but he wondered HOW strong, and-
Yep.  There he went again.
He took in a deep breath and held it; his fingers found the big, wide, flat rock he'd used the last time as the base to his stack and pulled it free of the sand.  As he dusted it off he decided not to use it as the base again -- it made a good foundation but that's not all there was to it, no sir.  He could picture it somewhere in the middle, as a dividing line and a balance point, or maybe on the very top...he'd done inverted stacks before and while they didn't last as long as one with a wide base he could still enjoy what he'd built for as long as it stood (temporary didn't mean lesser, after all).
Besides, he usually used one big rock as a base or four rocks to form a rectangle and he felt like changing everything up tonight.  He selected three stones of roughly the same size for a starting triangle shape for the base, and was already feeling a sense of accomplishment with how good this one was bound to turn out; he cupped his hand then dipped it into the mound of sand he'd sifted through and moved a tiny pile of it into the open area in the triangle, where he would balance one of the tall and thin rocks on its end for central stability later.
As his vision was starting to get a little hazy he finally let his breath out, long and slow, and then placed the first stone of the second layer on top of the one in the bottom right corner; it was a little wobbly, since that bottom one wasn't completely flat on its top, so he'd need to account for that with a bit of extra weight on the opposing side to keep it from rocking (heh) later.
All right... First stone in place, so time to consider the first question in his mind:
Did he like Dawn?
Answer: yes, he did; super easy answer, in fact.  It was surprising how quickly they'd taken to one another - he'd befriended her a lot quicker than he had anyone else in town, but then, that was probably because they had discovered an immediate thing in common: a love of rocks.
Rocks had really set a strong foundation for their friendship to build on, just like how those three on the bottom made a solid base for this stack.  He set a more spherical stone on top of the rock that made up the point of the triangular base; the bottom one was actually a little concave so the rounder one on top settled into the middle and stayed there without too much fuss, which was nice.  They fit together like they were made for one another.
Next question: did he like Dawn?
Answer...  It didn't feel as obvious as these two rocks did.  He smiled, both inside and on the outside, when he saw or thought about her, and got that warm and light feeling in his chest too.  He liked being around her, and talking to her.  But friends had that sort of emotional feel to them too, didn't they?  He may not smile to himself like that when thinking about anyone else but he enjoyed being around Justice, or Owen, or playing whac-a-mole with Pen, and it was always nice to stop and chat with anyone else in Sandrock.  What weight did the smile and the warmth carry?  Was that enough to tip it over from friendship into crush territory?
He settled a pointy rock on the last corner and then considered the stones for the next layer; if he didn't think about the balance and weight it would all fall over pretty quick, even if it was only three rocks high.
And, likewise, he needed to consider the consequences of a crush.  Feelings could make you do or say dumb things and the last thing he wanted to do was damage things between him and Dawn...in this situation it was still possible that he alone was considering this a crush while the builder could just be that nice in general.  She was a very sweet person and aside from her running away from Pen he hadn't really noticed any sort of conflict between her or anyone else.
With a steady hand he placed a rock shaped sort of like a thigh bone across the bottom left and the bottom right second layer stones; the underside of this one had little pits in it that created small nooks that caught on to the point of the bottom left stone but also acted almost like a flat spot for balancing on the bottom right, and its weight helped to steady the wobbliness of that rock too.
Much like the pits, which would go unnoticed unless you looked closer...there could be something there that he was overlooking.  What if he was wrong and she had a crush on him too?  She did smile a lot when she saw him, and had almost held his hand the other day (which reminded him that he was due back at the clinic to get those stitches taken out tomorrow morning - he needed to remember that).  He'd be lying if he said he hadn't thought about how her hand would feel in his later that night as he'd crawled into bed -- something small and precious, like the agate pin she'd made him.
Huffing out a sigh he selected three rocks at random and held them in his hands, assessing their weight and shapes.  There were times where he tried rocks that maybe weren't the right size, or didn't seem to really fit where he wanted to put them, but...sometimes, even if something didn't seem right, it could turn out ok in the end so long as there weren't too many mistakes made.
Actually, no, that wasn't the best way to describe that thought.
Mistakes could be made, and WOULD be made - that was just life.  You couldn't be afraid to make mistakes or else you may as well consider yourself afraid of pretty much everything, and that wouldn't be a good way to live.  What really mattered was if you noticed you were about to make a mistake, or how you handled the ones you DID make.
He held up a rock that sort of looked like a hand clenched into a fist, then carefully settled it on the ground near his knee and considered the other two he still held in his other hand. Neither of them seemed like they'd balance nicely on this layer, either.  That didn't make them useless, it just meant they weren't meant for this moment -- if he'd tried to force any of them into place everything would've fallen over.   Mistake avoided.
Both of these rocks he set aside with the other and then scooped the rest of the spare rocks out of the sand and balanced them across his legs in full view; it was starting to get a little too dark to see so this stack probably wouldn't be very tall unless he rushed to finish it.  And he could, but it wouldn't be as good.  Something small, and simple, and built with attention and affection, would always be more stable than something thrown together quickly.
Sort of like a crush, he supposed.  With time and patience it could become something more than that, but if he tried rushing things it might all just fall apart before he knew what they were building.  What he needed to do was give it time, see where pieces balanced...and if it still fell over later, well, that happened sometimes.  They could at least still be friends, and he was content with that thought.
One of these rocks reminded him of a honeycomb...he'd take that one home with him along with that big flat one that he'd meant to go in the middle, he decided.  The rest he returned to the sand mound and then he looked at the triangular stack; it was short and squat, and different from what he usually made, but he liked it.
Standing up he dusted his pants off and headed back toward his house -- a glass of water then straight to bed so he could get to the clinic early tomorrow.
-----------------------------------------
For about a week they didn't see a single hint of geegler activity; Justice had them both scouring the area around the Shonash Bridge every day and they didn't find a single lizard or anything pointing to where they may have retreated to.  It was highly suspicious, of course; there's no way they had all decided to leave, not after attacking so directly like that.  Justice was convinced they were up to something and Unsuur agreed with him...but, neither had any idea what.  Not until early that next Monday morning when Unsuur had spotted a column of smoke rising from the direction of the Moisture Farm.
He and Justice were nearly there when they heard several instances of shattering glass, and had burst through the doors to find Zeke standing with his boot planted on a dead geegler and several of the upper panes of glass in the dome that covered the farm broken and falling inward in a glittering rain.  The place stank of smoke and the sharp scent of blood but the only things left in the farm (aside from the plants) were Zeke, several geegler corpses, and, surprisingly, Dawn, who was standing over a geegler of her own and wiping blood off a small blade on the pantsleg of her overalls -- Unsuur hadn't ever seen her carrying a weapon before, but after a moment to register what he was seeing he noticed it was a knife that looked more suited to a builder's work than combat.  He felt a little chill run down his spine - did she have anything to properly defend herself with?
With the blade cleaned she hurried over to a nearby fire that was steadily burning through what looked like nearly ripe wheat stalks -- there'd be no saving those, and obviously Dawn thought the same as she pulled a pair of leather gloves from a back pocket, pulled one on, and then used that protected hand to grab burning stalks and began slicing them off near the soil and tossing the burning bits onto the metal floor behind her, safely away from the planter boxes.  Zeke moved to grab a watering can to begin dousing flames and when the can went empty he switched over to a rake and was pulling damaged and flaming plants away from the others before the fires could spread further.
He and Justice hurried to help put out what fires they could and when everything was finally over they gathered in front of the central pillar of the moisture farm that housed the machinery that made the farm possible; it was scorched and broken into dozens of pieces, and the main part in the middle was little more than slag and jagged metal.
"And I thought the oasis attack was a clear escalation," Justice growled.  "You both all right?"
Zeke and Dawn nodded, though the giant man lumbered over closer to examine the ruined machinery.  "Didn't take long to take care of them but it didn't take them long to break the Hydrogel either.  All the crops will die without it."
Justice stared at him silently for a moment before also moving to look the machinery over.  "You're joking, right?  I can never tell if you're serious or not..."
Zeke shook his head.  "I'm afraid there's nothing funny about it.  Without a replacement, we could be in dire straits."
Both he and Justice, and Unsuur now too, looked over to Dawn.  She was smeared with ash, dirt, and blood, and when she noticed their eyes on her she came over and slipped between them to rap her knuckles on the Hydrogel's buckled door.
"This is something you can help with, right?  ...right?" Justice asked, moving to settle a hand on her shoulder.
Dawn blew out a long sigh.  "It...looks complicated, but I'm not going rule out anything.  I can run home, get my tools, and come straight back to assess what might still be salvageable, since I don't see "repair" being an option."
Justice chuckled, looking relieved as he gave Dawn's shoulder a squeeze; Unsuur felt relieved for a moment too before that nagging worry about Dawn's lack of a weapon came back -- now wasn't the time to ask about it, though.
"That's the spirit!  Qi might know something that'll help," Justice continued.  "See what you can find out then go talk to him.  Zeke, you hold down the fort - Unsuur, you're with me, let's secure the perimeter."
"Yes, sir!" Unsuur replied.  He went to follow Justice out, glancing over his shoulder for one final look at Dawn as she stood there talking to Zeke in a low voice.  She looked impossibly tiny next to the imposing farmer...  She'd be tiny next to one of the larger geeglers too.
He swore he'd ask her about her combat knowledge as soon as they made sure there weren't any more geeglers lurking.
-------------------------------------
The sun had already set by the time Unsuur got a free moment; his feet hurt and he felt pretty dehydrated even though he'd downed three glasses of water before leaving the Civil Corps building, and standing there between it and his house he'd had second thoughts about going to find the builder tonight - it was kind of late, would she be in bed already? - but when he'd walked over to Water World to get a look across the tracks he could still see Dawn's silhouette at one of the machines so he'd jogged out there and paused at her fence.
She'd made a rough table out of scrap metal and had various blueprints and a few notepads scattered across its surface, weighed down with (plain) rocks and writing tools; Dawn herself was seated in front of some kind of drilling machine and between the noise of the motor and the ear protection she had on she hadn't heard him approach, and her eyes were glued to what she was doing so she hadn't seen him either.  The yard was lit by a few lamps and the glow of the furnaces and he didn't want to accidentally startle her in the near-dark so he moved around the fence until he was closer to her line of sight and, sure enough, she noticed him then and acknowledged him with a nod and smile.
He braced his palms against the fence and leaned, and waited; she finished drilling out whatever piece she was working on then turned everything off and took off the ear coverings.
"Good evening-- you look tired."
Did he?  He hadn't really looked at himself today since he'd brushed his hair this morning.  "Only a little tired.  If you're busy I can come back."
"Busy is relative, I think - Qi is finalizing the blueprints for the inner guts of the hydrogel, so to speak, and while I can get some of the door hardware made up and ready to go I can't make the actual door until Qi gets me those blueprints so I'll have measurements in hand."  She wiped her hands clean on her overalls and came over to lean against the fence near him; she had her back and waist pressed against the wood but angled her shoulders toward him so they could see one another, and when she was settled in place she offered him a weary smile.  "Everything all right otherwise?"
Unsuur nodded.  "No sign of geeglers.  But, I came over here because of their attack today --what happened?"
She pressed her lips into a thin line, nodding silently to herself; Unsuur waited patiently.
"Matilda came to talk to me first thing today - said she wanted me to learn desert farming and that Zeke was already expecting me, which admittedly rearranged my entire morning without warning.  But!  I headed out to the moisture farm like she'd asked me to, and I'd barely said hello before those stupid lizards attacked.  Most of them just set some fires and fled but the ones you saw on the floor, and the few Zeke lobbed out the windows, those tried to hurt us."  She paused, then rubbed at the back of her neck.  "Zeke did most of the fighting, honestly -- the geeglers actually seemed to be ignoring me.  Only one got close enough for me to stab it, the rest got thrashed by Zeke."
Well, it wasn't good that they'd been attacked but Unsuur felt a little better to hear that Dawn hadn't been in as much danger as his imagination had been picturing all day.  "Do you have any kind of weapon you can start carrying around?"
She huffed through her nose, a sort of amused sound.  "I always have some kind of knife or tool on me, but I don't think that's what you mean.   And I know I should have had something on me for defense but this morning I sort of...rushed off without thinking about it."
That wasn't entirely an answer.  "But do you have something?"
After a moment she shook her head.  "Not really...  I know I should, even before the geeglers were a problem I thought about it.  I don't really consider myself a fighter," she added quietly.  "I know how to throw a proper punch, and the builder's school gave us some very basic self defense lessons for ruins diving...  Pen has been dogging me since I arrived wanting to give me fighting lessons but frankly, he scares the crap out of me."
"He is pretty big, and loud," Unsuur agreed.
Or at least he thought he was agreeing with her; he was surprised when Dawn shook her head at his words.
"It's not that-- I mean, it IS that, sort of, but it's also more.  He's five times my size and yes, he's strong.  But I don't think combat lessons are all he's trying to force on me, and he seems like the sort of self-assured person to not take no for answer...  Peach knows he hasn't understood 'no' as an entire sentence so far in regards to the lessons."
...oh.  "He won't do anything to you.  Except maybe annoy you, which it sounds like he's already doing.  Justice and I can tell him to knock it off."
She nodded but didn't look convinced.
"Do you know how to use a weapon?" Unsuur went on.  "We have spares at the Civil Corps office and can give you one, if you need it.  I would just need to know what to bring you."
"Something...small, I guess.  I don't like the idea of getting close and personal with something trying to attack me but I doubt I could effectively handle anything big and bulky."
Unsuur shifted to put his forearms on the top slat of the fence, which lowered him down to be closer to eye level with Dawn; she looked uncertain, and had her lower lip between her teeth again.   "A dagger?  A sword?  I can teach you to use either -- I'm decent with both, even if I don't always carry one with me.  Mostly because the sheaths don't fit on my belt all that well with this here too."  He patted the holster at his hip; she looked at it curiously and then up to him.  "I can't give you a pistol though," he added.  "Justice decides who gets one of those, when they don't already have one.  He likes to be the one teaching folks how to use it."
At the mention of the pistol she made a face, nose wrinkling.  "I don't like the idea of using a gun at all."
"You don't have to," he replied quickly.  "It's your choice."
"...I guess a dagger then.  Well, no, maybe a sword.  It'd be nice to have at least a little bit of reach," she muttered to herself, before standing and stretching.
Unsuur straightened as well.  "I'll bring you one, and teach you how to use it too.  We can use the showdown ring for lessons."
"...do we have to?  I don't want Pen barging in."
"I know a lot of open places that will work instead, then."
That familiar warmth hit him as he took in the relieved smile she flashed him; the furnaces had gone quiet while they were talking but there was enough light from the lamps to still see each other and their golden glow softened her expression even further.  He quickly glanced toward town.
"Let me know when you have a free afternoon or evening, and I'll teach you," he said.
"I can't guarantee when that'll be.  I'm expecting those final blueprints in the morning and this isn't something I can take a leisurely pace with -- I have to get that hydrogel fixed before the plants start dying quicker than Zeke can hand-water."
"Can Mi-an help?"
"She is," Dawn answered, shaking a finger at him.  "She has to get all that glass repaired and will be helping replace the planter boxes.  It won't do any good if I get the hydrogel replaced and there's still holes in the roof or not enough space to get replacement plants in the ground."   She was grinning at him so he knew she was only pretending to be annoyed.
He held up his hands in a placating gesture all the same, smiling.  "That's fair.  I'll see you later.  Good night."
"Good night, Unsuur."

You're the baddest Girl

Song inspo: Childish Gambino: LES
C.W: angst, drug use, drinking. MORE ANGST (sorry not sorry)
Ony strolled across campus thinking about his interaction with you. He knew he brought this upon himself by hooking up with Annie. He saw Annie walking across the courtyard heading to class. He ran up to her to ask her a simple question.
"Yo Annie wait up real quick!" Ony yelled. Annie stopped and turned to Ony and rolled her eyes. "How can I help you Ony. I have to get to class" "Yah yah whatev Imma be quick. Why did you come over to my place that day really."
Annie rolled her eyes and said "Oh you mean *giggles* Ony Ony Ony anyway. Im sure the question you wanna ask is why I told you about Y/N and that guy from her class. Honestly, it did look that way and Y/N was being vague about him when I asked. But then I realised she wasn't interested in him. Here's a fun fact to why I did it Y/N knew I was interested in you when we all met first week of Uni but she went out with you anyway so I dubbed her. Yah yah I'm wrong but *shrugs* Oh well. Anyway bye" Ony stood there in shock. All these years he didn't know Annie was being shady with you. He saw the signs but you and everyone said that's just how Annie behaves. Ony turns around and practicvally walk right into Mikasa who looks furious.
Ony immediately thought "Damn Kasa looks pissed tf off" Mikasa looked right passed Ony to Annie's back strolling gleefully to her class. "Ony tell me what I heard come out of Annie's mouth isn't real. cause if it is. I swear.." Mikasa pulled out her phone and called Eren to meet her on the other side of the courtyard. Ony wasn't in the mood for confrontation or drama, he wanted to go home, chill maybe go to Armin's party later to clear his head. Eren came over with the quickness with Connie in tow.
Mikasa started going off telling Connie and Eren about what she overheard from Ony's and Annie's conversation. "Ony, is what Mikasa saying the truth cause this changes the whole thing up." Eren said looking between Mikasa and Ony. Ony stared back at Eren then at Connie and Mikasa "It does but it doesn't I still cheated on Y/N regardless. It's..Anyway guys I gotta go home."
"To smoke weed and cry again." Connie blurted out. Ony stared at Connie and was ready to square up but then he knew Connie was just telling it to him straight, disrespectful but he knew connie was a real one especially to him. "Nah. I'm going to the mall to get a new fit. You guys know Armin parties are insane." "Oh, so you coming then" Eren said with a smirk. Ony laughed and walked off yelling "Like imma miss it."
Tumblr media
Ony finally got home from the mall. He finally got his hands on the Spiderverse Jordan 1's he's been wanting. He got a Represent T shirt and a True Religion Jeans paired with His watch and chain and bracelet. He didn't know if you were gonna show or ot but he decided to not let it bother him too much. He sat out on his balcony and rolled up a blunt and scrolled through his IG. He saw the usual IG baddies in his DMs tryna move to him. He wasn't interested in dating anyone. He scrolled through his Spotify and pulled up Asap Rocky's -I Smoked Away My Brain  and got ready for Armin's party.
Ony rolled up to Armin's party 11:30pm, blunt hanging out his mouth as usual. He was greeted by upper classman Hange, Levi, Zeke and others. He grabbed himself a shot of wreys and nephews and took it down in one go. He walked around looking for Eren or Armin to let them know he's here.
He found Mikasa, Sasha, Pieck, Eren, Connie and Jean chilling up near the makeshift DJ booth where Armin is shouting and acting a fool as usual. As he walks closer. His eyes connect with you. You were there with them laughing decked out in a short black dress paired with a pair of red heels.
Your eyes connected with Ony somehow you were both matching in some odd way, both wearing red. You were here to chill, turn up hang with friends and not beef with Ony. You did the mature thing and greeted him. Everyone around you looked a bit shook. You disregarded their reactions and took the blunt hanging from Ony's mouth and took a toke and handed it back to him.
He just stood there staring at you then he smirked. Annie walked into the fold and wrapped her hand around Ony's waist. You were seeing red. Before Ony rolled up Mikasa told you that Annie isn't to be trusted and she a messy ass hoe. You watched Ony glare down at Annie mouthing "WTF are you on". Your mind was running wild. Why is Annie all up on Ony like that? Are they fuckin'. You glanced at Mikasa who was already making her way over to Annie. Eren tried to pull her back, but she pulled away.
"Annie, really. You really trying to move to Ony after you fucked Y/N over." Mikasa was all up in Annie's face pointing her manicured nail at her temple. Before things escalated, Ony sighed and walked off knowing he didn't want to get mixed up in anymore drama.
At the same time, you were trying to understand what Mikasa meant by when she said Annie fucked you over for Ony. Mikasa slapped Annie across the face and they both immediately started scrappin'. Mikasa was beating the brakes and lights out of Annie.
Armin and Eren eventually pulled Mikasa off of Annie but not before they made sure Annie got her ass beat a lil. You questioned Mikasa on why did she jump Annie like that. You were calling her messy and all kinda nonsense then, Mikasa dropped the bomb she heard. "I'm messy, gurl that bitch Annie went to Ony knowing you weren't fucking around with your group partner to break you both up. Why cause she wanted Ony and you started dating him."
You stood there in shook. Your memory took you back to the first week of Uni were you both saw Ony and suddenly everything clicked. You wanted to swing on her immediately, but Mikasa already did that. You cussed Annie out, Annie looked like she didn't give one fuck about you cussing her out, so you jumped her ass. You stopped caring if Mikasa just jumped her. She deserved another beating for being disrespectful.
Annie was pretty strong; you knew that but the rage in you made you really go toe to toe with her. The fight only got separated because you tried to smash her head on the DJ booth. Connie pulled you away from her. Armin escorted Annie out the party while Eren, Sasha and Connie made sure you were okay checking you for bruising and other stuff.
Mikasa and Sasha took you to the upstairs bathroom to help you freshen up after the fight. Mikasa told you what she overheard from Ony's conversation with Annie in uni earlier. You always knew Annie was messy, but you didn't think she'd dog you for a man. You all let the bathroom and headed back to the group. Connie and Armin were choppin it rolling a fat ass blunt. You watched Eren leave the group saying he's gonna check on Ony.
Eren finally located Ony. He was sitting on top a semi short wall in back yard of Armin's yard, eyes low with the usual tint of red in them. Eren strolled over, rolling a joint in his hand, hopped up on the wall sitting next to Ony. Ony glanced at Eren from the corner of his eyes and said "Go keep Y/N company. I'm sure Mikasa spilled what Annie did. I'm good out here man."
Eren ignored Ony's words in favor of lighting the joint and passing it to Ony. Ony shook his head saying "I'm good man. Think imma head home. Tell Armin, thanks for the invite."
Ony hopped off the wall strolling back inside to go grab a water to sober up. He bumped into you. You looked a bit distressed. He knew you were taking the news badly. He wanted to comfort you, but he knows he was still part of the reason you were hurting. Ony tried to walk right pass you, but you pulled him back.
He turned, looked down at you, he sees you looking up at him with a look in your eyes begging him to stay. He knew he would regret it if he did something dumb by the end of the party but he decided to stick around.
Tumblr media
You heard the bass thumping of Childish Gambino's song LES while you made out with Ony in the bathroom. You were leaning against the bathroom sink, arms wrapped up around Ony's neck, one of Ony's hand is wrapped around your waist the other gripping your jaw.
You really missed this but a part of you knew this wasn't right. You pulled away from him looking up into his eyes. It was low and red. He was faded, he was staring at you with so much emotion but also some desperation. "I just can't" you looked into his eyes saying. Ony pulled you closer against him, leaning closer to your ear saying, "Nobody else matters Y/N. Tell me what I can do to make you stay."
You stared at Ony, knowing you shouldn't have kissed him and started all this. It was wrong of you to do this to him. You were acting reckless. "I don't think we should continue this Ony. I'm sorry." You placed your hands against his chest to attempt to push him away so you can leave. Ony grabs both your hands in his, staring into your eyes. His eyes were getting glassy. "Stay with me please, Y/N. Please I'm sorry for sleeping with Annie, for causing you so much pain and heartache. I'm sorry I didn't express how badly us drifting apart hurt me. I'm sorry for everything y/n."
You waited so long to hear these words from him, but it felt late, right but late. You felt like you weren't sure if you both would ever come back from this. You pulled your hands from his and started walking away from him to exit the bathroom. You heard Ony blurt out behind your head, "Don’t you understand how much it would hurt me to see you go again. Why? Why are you running away from us?” Ony was up on you pushing the bathroom door closed again.
“I love you. And that’s why I have to leave.” You said to him attempting to leave the bathroom again “Well, I love you too and that’s why you have to stay.” you sighed, "Goodbye Ony. I hope you take better care of yourself." You left Ony standing in the bathroom alone.
Ony took a minute before he left the bathroom looking around the party for you. He ran into the Connie and Eren choppin playing pool and smoking.
Ony asked them both if they saw you. Connie responded "Yah she left with Sasha and Mikasa. She didn't look...wait what happened?" Ony relayed what just happened back to them both.
Eren sighed saying "Ony cause you're my bro and I love you man but you gotta drop it. it's gonna just turn toxic between you two." Ony felt his heart break again, this time worse than before. He really lost the one person he truly loved.

I got one more part of this riddled with more angst it would be more of closure. Kinda maybe, who knows.
