Do you have any headcanons about Beth and Lucas's college time?
the two met first saw each other at a sociology course freshman year. first day of class, the professor gave out the syllabi and got right into teaching the content. beth, being the diligent person that she is, was, as always, prepared and began to furiously take down notes. much to her chagrin, this one guy at the front kept on interrupting the lecture by piping up about why the information was wrong and biased and, overall, arguing with the professor. she did find herself agreeing a lot with him, though.
they officially met at a demonstration in the college(second week). lucas, incredibly passionate about the cause, naturally came into his own and took up a front-and-center role in the protest despite only being a freshie. beth had gone to the demonstration because she decided she wanted to get out there a bit more, start making a change in the field she would go into after she got her masters. and, since the demonstration was largely based on urban issues, she decided to go. get involved. and there, right there, was one lucas gray.
beth stayed back after the protest to help clean up. lucas walked up to her and they talked for a bit. turns out they had a lot more in common than just one class and a passion for urban issues.
over the next few weeks, they were just...acquaintances. lucas admired beth...a lot. she often caught him staring at her like a forlorn puppy. it was kinda weird, but also somewhat adorable?
from study sessions to demonstrations, they began spending more and more time together. as a result, they progressively became better and better friends.
by the end of freshman year, they were best friends. over that time, lucas’s crush on beth grew and grew.
sometime near the end of sophomore year, a couple weeks before finals, they were just hanging out together, studying. they got in some cheap wine and some pizza, and just...talked. one thing led to another, and they hooked up. they got up in the morning and decided to talk it out. lucas was fully expecting her to ask him to...disregard that, and he was fully prepared to do so. much to his surprise, she said quite the opposite. she posited that since both of them were attracted to each other, and already knew each other so well(so low-risk), it would make the most sense that they got together.
they started going out that week.
the summer in between sophomore and junior year, they went on several dates in nyc.
that summer, lucas also started volunteering at the nycc and getting involved in the protests there. several times during the protests, he encountered a boisterous woman who looked...strikingly similar to beth. for some odd reason, she “recognized” him too: “mark! mark! when did you change your hair? and where’s your camcorder? you need to record this! markie!!”. lucas...never really brought it up with beth. people are just weird sometimes.
a few weeks into junior year, beth and lucas broke up. as beth cited it, the two simply made more sense as friends. understandably, lucas was slightly upset since he truly did love beth, but he chose to suppress those feelings for the sake of their friendship.
but that was evidently not easy. the two got more involved in the protests around campus, sometimes even organizing them themselves. this was one of the many places that the genius of beth really shone through. and lucas really loved her for that.
one of the protests that they organized was the protest against factory beef in senior year where they shut down the dining hall. a large, large percent of the student body was upset with the two. lucas didn’t care because he was focused on the cause. beth didn’t care too much because she, too, cared a lot about the cause and she also didn’t care much for politics at the time.
after uni and when beth was in grad school, they got a place in poughkeepsie with a couple other classmates.
after some time, when the breakup was less...awkward, they began talking about guys. this went on long after university and into grad school. when beth started dating oren, lucas was pretty upset. he constantly went on and on, “he’s such a drag. he’s so boring. what are you doing with him?”. admittedly, lucas was a bit jealous. but still. oren was wayy out of beth’s league--she was too good for him. he would essentially be a hindrance to beth’s career(about twelve years later, he would be proven right).

dance
no one asked me for this. but here you go anyways. here are my interpretations/headcanons of every character’s relationship with dance.
elizabeth: normal/not that great at dancing. doesn’t dance that often but rarely jams/bops to music every now and then. signature style of dancing is just...bouncing up and down, maybe swaying every now and then.
lucas: godawful dancer. on his own, it’s like he’s got two left feet. signature dance move is just randomly swaying his arms and writhing around and hoping for the best. every now and then, at parties and stuff, david will try to get lucas to dance with him, and this is one of the rare moments that he will dance(because he looooooves him).
kate: loves dance and everything about it. thinks of it as a language of love. sometimes, she and anne will just put on some music and dance around the room(like those couples did in those old-timey movies).
josh: average dancer. never really danced any more than that one dance unit in high school PE and his wedding. that’s about it. does a tiny little victory dance sometimes when things are going especially well.
anne: professional god tier dancer. has been dancing at a professional/competitive level since childhood. especially good at jazz and contemporary dance.
david: above average dancer. danced as a hobby as a kid, the skills carried on.
elena: average/above average. focused mostly on architecture and city planning as a kid, never really much on performing arts like dance. but still skilled and can dance really well when given a choreography.
stephen: doesn’t dance. at all. the only time he did was during his wedding with cathy, and even then, he didn’t really put that much into it.
