Ch191, Special scissors

Why does Layla have this pair of scissors that can cut into the top of Ronald's lawnmower death scythe and jam up the works of its rotating blades? It must be made of the same stuff as those lawnmower blades. But it doesn't look like a death scythe.

It could be a death scythe disguised as something else, like how Undertaker's sometimes looks like a sotoba, but here's another possibility: it could be a special pair of scissors meant specifically for cutting cinematic records, and those might be made of the same stuff as death scythes... but serve a separate purpose.

Ch60 has Undertaker explaining what reapers do: they collect souls and send them off for judgment. They also cut the cinematic records right after the word "END". He's shown with a death scythe but also with a pair of scissors. It seems to me that death scythes aren't always good for precision work, like cutting between two frames in a cinematic record, especially if your death scythe modification is anything other than shears or a simple blade.

There are two major possibilities here: either death scythes convert into shears/scissors for precision work... or reapers typically carry a death scythe and a special pair of scissors, which are probably made of the same material. The whole issue is complicated by Undertaker saying just before (previous page) that cinematic records "come to an end at that moment" that the soul is collected.

I'm thinking that "END" pops up in their cinematic record at that moment, but cutting the film is something different.

Well, perhaps Yana-san isn't entirely sure how to illustrate exactly how reapers carry out their duties, so the images and explanations are a bit vague and slightly contradictory. A third major possibility now exists: reapers don't normally carry around scissors, nor do their death scythes convert to that shape; the scissors shown in ch60 are just shown there to help us understand (but ultimately cause more confusion) and aren't actually used in the process.

All the same, Layla has been entrusted (unless she somehow stole it before she headed to Athena Sanatorium) with a weapon that can compete against reaper death scythes... and could therefore also be used to kill reapers and demons....

Mu Qing’s shoulders tensed.

Xie Lian continued, “Only today did I find out that you’re much more skilled with the sabre than you are with the sword.”

Mu Qing’s expression relaxed and turned around. There was even a little smile playing on his lips. “Really?”

“Yeah!” Xie Lian answered. “But you might’ve been too hasty. Swinging a sabre is not like swinging a sword, look here…”

The moment the topic shifted to martial arts, Xie Lian became highly enthusiastic, even more possessed than when the Guoshi played cards; he jumped off the bed without even putting on shoes, demonstrating his point on the spot using his hand as the pretend sabre. Mu Qing wore a complicated expression, but after Xie Lian demonstrated a few moves, he started to watch seriously. Feng Xin on the other hand, swung the now properly wrapped long sabre, and chased Xie Lian back onto the bed, shouting,

“IF YOU’RE GOING TO SHOW OFF AT LEAST PUT ON YOUR SHOES BEFORE YOU DO! You’re the Crown Prince! Hair loose and feet bare, what a disgrace!”

Xie Lian was just at the height of his excitement but then got chased onto the bed like ducks to the pen, and was rather bitter.

This scene was split over two pages, so I couldn’t manage to get it in one image, but the interesting thing about these two panels is how they operate together, so…

First, how Krieg looks and acts. He’s losing his cool, he’s furious, he’s getting out the big guns because more than simply killing Luffy he NEEDS to make him bow to his authority. Contrast that with Luffy’s relaxed and matter-of-fact attitude, despite the way Krieg (and his underlings) have had the upper hand so far this entire fight.

It’s even down to some subtle things about the art. Krieg fills the whole panel, and gets “speed lines” to heighten and emphasize his reaction. Luffy is standing alone in a totally blank panel with just a DON.

The other thing is look at their words. Krieg is giving evidence, he’s making a case, he’s NEGOTIATING with Luffy. Meanwhile Luffy is giving him nothing. He’s even more terse in the original Japanese.

Finally, both times in this chapter when this interaction happened Krieg and Luffy were placed on opposite sides of the spread. In the first, Krieg and Luffy were at the same eye level, “facing off.” In this second one, Krieg is at the bottom of the page and Luffy is at the top, giving a subtle power shift in Luffy’s favor.

It’s a fun quirk of the comics medium that authors can use this sort of visual story telling to shift the mood of the readers.
