ive been inspired to make plane furries, but I am not a plane person - can you give me some planes that look soft and or cool to try anthropomorphising?
I'm very biased but I think you can't go wrong with any commercial jets because of their stubby noses for making them look soft as anything. They have such a friendly look to them. I actually in particular think the Airbus jets excel at this, and outsize cargo jets also have a very endearing look to them.
General aviation planes as well can be very cute and fun looking. The Cessna Skyhawk is probably what first comes to mind since it's like, the most produced ever and it continues to be endearing in appearance. If you're willing to branch out, you could even try gliders.
For cool planes, I think probably most people would go for military jets. F-15 Eagle, F-22 Raptor etc. but also military planes also have some of the more... unconvential shapes and appearances due to their specialised build.
I'm not recommending too many specific models bc I think part of the fun of being an avgeek is that it can be subjective. I'd say look up some examples from each area of aviation and finding what you personally think is cool. Planespotters.net has a vast archive of plane photographs and you can search by manufactorer, model etc. to find specifics.

No. 10 - Dodo Airlines
Tumblr media
Well, @vultureworth, I suppose you can.
For reference: I’ve never played  Animal Crossing, so I actually had to do research for this. I saw an interesting thing or two in the process, though, so here’s what I learned! This took me down an entirely different rabbit hole, so two posts are going up today. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
(image: Animal Crossing Twitter)
So, to begin with, just looking up the liveries I’ve seen a few mentions of the DAL logo being a nod to JAL.
Tumblr media
I don’t not see it. I mean, they’re both circles and both follow an XAL format, but that’s true for like a fifth of all the airlines in the world. Both have a bird facing to the left. The fonts used are similar in width and color and both appear to be italic, but the spacing and typeface are visibly very different. I probably wouldn’t have picked up on it had it not been pointed out to me but the Tsurumaru logo is definitely iconic and it’s a neat little detail.
Tumblr media
The only type DAL operates looks like this. It’s too stylized to discern an exact model but my guess would be that it’s meant to be a Cessna 172 or one of the many similar-looking Cessna models. They’re extremely common and frequently fitted with floats. I’ve flown on a Cessna 180 floatplane myself.
Tumblr media
Yep, that’s sure a Cessna 172 on amphibious floats. DAL’s plane isn’t amphibious, only capable of taking off and landing on water, but you can do that too (I imagine it’s even easier); I just had a weirdly hard time finding a picture of a fully aquatic Skyhawk.
Tumblr media
I’m actually pretty sure it’s specifically one of the very old models which had a much more angular tailfin and no rear windows, but maybe by this point I’ve thought more about this than the art team did when designing the plane. That said, I have to question the decision to add a third prop blade to a plane that can barely pull 200 horsepower with aftermarket engine changes. That’s just inefficient.
When it comes to the DAL livery, I enjoy the way that the curve of the main fuselage’s paint is repeated on the pontoons. The logo placement feels weird to me initially but I suppose upon reflection it would be strange to put it anywhere else and it looks fine. It would probably look a bit less fine on a real airplane but this is not a real airplane, this is a cartoon airplane flown by a silly cartoon bird in a video game.
This is making me appreciate just how hard it is to find somewhere to put a logo on a single-engine high-wing plane.
But the DAL fleet are actually jellybeans! That’s right, they come in four different colorways!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
all images taken from either the Animal Crossing wiki or bidoofcrossing.com
I’ll be honest - I like the blue trim on the yellow and the green models, but it looks sort of bad on the red/orange. My favorite overall, surprisingly, might be the yellow. I don’t know - I like the contrast, but the yellow somehow feels less bright than the green.
Overall...A solid C for Dodo Airlines.
Just one thing, though. We’ve gotten basically every angle except directly from behind, but I don’t see a registration anywhere on these planes. Whatever aviation authority the Animal Crossing world is bound to is going to have some words for DAL...

i do find the whole chinese balloon thing kind of interesting
because on the one hand, the stated explanation of being for the study of weather patterns and climate issues doesn't make much sense; the NOAA and NWS data is freely available, and many research teams across China collaborate scientifically with research teams across the US; if you wanted to study weather in the US from a chinese perspective, you'd just call up your american colleagues in cali and ask them to float out a balloon. this would also be much less likely to inflame international tensions! claiming the balloon was not theirs would also be much less likely to inflame international tensions, so it likely is theirs.
but on the other hand, what could you possibly get from a spy balloon that you couldn't get from a satellite or just sending a spy on a cheap low-flying piston plane tour around the US? a balloon like that is a lot more expensive than a cessna skyhawk, and you can get close enough to known secure locations in the US on a skyhawk that you can take excellent pictures as long as you have a decent camera. the only thing i can think of is searching the mountains, but logistics in the mountains are such that it's really unlikely the US would be building much there anyway (and a balloon would have trouble with the weather patterns over them.)
so, like, did they just refuse to collaborate with US scientists for an unknown reason, or did they come up with a harebrained spying scheme the likes of the stuff the 60s CIA did? who knows. i'd sure like to!
the one thing i do know for sure is that whatever it was meant to be used for it was a waste of chinese budget. so shooting it down with a huge waste of US budget is wonderfully on point. you couldn't make a better joke about military industry if you tried.

A list of WTTT headcanons, in no order whatsoever.
• North Carolina and Ohio both fly private, personal planes— specifically two Cessna Skyhawks. Ohio was the one to introduce NC to the aircraft, and it’s probably the *only* time you’ll ever see them get along.
• Austin / Texas’s guitar is coated in stickers from different states— mainly California and Floridas bullshit. It’s become a fun game to see how many you can stick on there before he notices. He dosent like to admit he appreciates the..unwarranted..decoration however.
• Virginia loves boating— it’s his favourite way of visiting his friends down ( or up ) the coast. Norfolk is the worlds largest naval base, and he prides himself on it. Sometimes Virginia can be seen sitting on the coast and watching all the boats be constructed from the pier. He also owns a sailboat with his flags colours.
• Illinois and New York have a Saturday schedule of ordering their respective pizza preferences, a couple sodas and turning on either baseball or football depending on the season. It gives them both something to look forward too..and a reason to fight to the death about college sports. Who would blame them, Baseball bats are multipurpose!
• Speaking of sports, the entire downstairs of the statehouse works as a gym/mancave. It is plastered in some of the most patriotic and obsessive sports merch you will find— from signed jerseys to Super Bowl football’s, cases of beer on beer and multiple couches for all of the states to sit and watch sports on. It has a pool table, a bar and multiple fridges aswell.
• Alaskas garage room doubles as a place for all the states to store their things when their own rooms get crowded. Trinkets, instruments, cards, old photographs and more. Alaska dosent mind much, he spends most of his day cleaning his shotgun and sleeping in his bed to care.
• California has a entire wall dedicated to storing movies. From every time period and decade, to every medium, genre— good or bad, he has it. It’s free for all the states to browse as long as they return them at one point ( speaking of which..all those Wild West cowboy movies seem to be missing for awhile now. )
• Oregon and Idaho have engagement rings made with their state gemstone. Oregon’s is a sunstone, while Idaho’s is the Star Garnet.

who more likeli to the Cessna 172 Skyhawk is an American four-seat, single-engine, high wing, fixed-wing aircraft made by the Cessna Aircraft Company which was first flown in 1955, more 172s have been built than any other aircraft and it was developed from the 1948 Cessna 170 but with tricycle landing gear rather than conventional landing gear and the Skyhawk name was originally used for a trim package, but was later applied to all standard-production 172 aircraft, while some upgraded versions were marketed as the Cutlass and measured by its longevity and popularity, the Cessna 172 is the most successful aircraft in history and Cessna delivered the first production model in 1956, and as of 2015, the company and its partners had built more than 44,000 units and the aircraft remains in production today and a general aviation airplane, the Skyhawk's main competitors have been the Beechcraft Musketeer and Grumman AA-5 series (neither currently in production), the Piper Cherokee, and, more recently, the Diamond DA40 and Cirrus SR20, bilbo or studebaker

Planes are loud :)
Chicken Nugget the Cessna is roaring today! 🥰💕
Many pilots affectionately nicknamed the Cessna Skyhawk as the SkyChicken, and this one's been named Chicken Nugget cause it'll probably never fly again. many newbie/careless aviation maintenance students worked on it, damaged quite a lot </3

Kirsa Wren Mistwood
Known as Kiwi by her family and childhood friends
Known as Skyhawk by the UFAD
Birthday - September 20 (Summer 28), age 33 at the start of Spring, Year 1
Hometown - Zuzu City, Ferngill Republic
Job - Lieutenant Colonel of the Ferngill Republic United Forces, Air Division (UFAD). Currently on a medical leave of absence and working as the owner of Mistwood Farms.

Description
Kirsa is 5'7 with a lean, muscular build. She has bright aqua blue eyes and wears oversized purple-framed glasses. Her wavy auburn hair is usually kept long but rarely worn down - she usually twists it into braids of varying complexity. She has a light dusting of freckles all over her body that tend to blend into her peachy/tan skin tone.
She prefers to wear comfortable outdoorsy clothing, favoring leggings, light pants/shorts, tshirts, button-down work shirts, outdoor boots/shoes. Kirsa always wears a purple silicone medical ID bracelet on her right wrist and a smart watch on her left wrist.
After serving for 9 years in the military, Kirsa has a collection of more than two dozen small scars from various injuries (cuts, burns, breaks, etc). Most are faded and are only noticeable if you're looking for them, but two stand out. A spiderweb like collection of thin jagged lines and haphazardly placed circles in the middle of her right thigh, and a long straight pink surgical scar on her torso that is half an inch wide and runs from the top of her sternum to her navel.
Tattoo
Kirsa has a tattoo that matches those of her squadron - each member of her squad got one to represent their call sign after they graduated from officer training, and all have the letters AETS (Airborne Emergency Trauma Support) and YNDY (You're Not Dead Yet) incorporated into the design.
Kirsa's tattoo (for "Skyhawk") is on her right wrist - a silhouette of a Cessna Skyhawk plane with AETS on the left wing of the plane and YNDY on the right wing, with a dotted line trail that extends from the back of the plane around her wrist but doesn't reconnect to anything.

GA-ASI flight tests state-of-the-art flight computer in the Gray Eagle Extended Range
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/18/22 - 16:00 in Military, UAV - UAV
A General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) successfully performed the first state-of-the-art flight computer flight tests for the MQ-1C Grey Eagle Extended Range (GE-ER) Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS).
The tests took place at GA-ASI's El Mirage Flight Test Facility in El Mirage, California, as part of the development efforts funded by the U.S. Army to update and modernize the GE-ER.
GA-ASI successfully tested the new Flight Control Module (FCM) on September 13 and 14, 2022. Flights included the Eagle Flight Computer Assembly (EFCA) that provides greater processing power, memory and a high-speed Ethernet interface. Modernized avian will allow advanced computing, Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) and automation, as well as redundancy and environmental improvements.
Tumblr media
This series of flight tests also provides critical risk reduction for the FCM-based UAS Gray Eagle 25M, along with advanced data links, avian and communication enhancements, and features of HFE 2.0 and Brushless Generator, which are scheduled to begin the flight test in early 2023.
“Together with our U.S. Army teammates, we are making important progress in preparing GE-ER for successful all-domain operations (JADO) in disputed environments,” said GA-ASI Army Vice President of Programs, Don Cattell. "The completion of the modernization of the GE-ER allows the readiness, reliability, versatility and success of the mission for the U.S. Army's highest priority reconnaissance, surveillance, direction and acquisition (RSTA) missions in all levels of command."
