this was a result of me reading this post/conversation between @originalaccountname and @iwritenarrativesandstuff (hope you guys don't mind the tagging skjfksdjf) and getting really sad about Chuuya — and I had been rewatching the Dark Era episodes for the billionth time and was thinking about Oda and Dazai hugging Ango while they're all smelly to make him go with them, and so I thought "ok what if Dazai did that to Chuuya but in the process they both accidentally discovered how touch-starved Chuuya is"

everyone lives au in which harry is raised by jegulus and remus teaches defence at hogwarts consistently and of course because harry is son of his father and hates seeing his uncle moony miserable at every full moon, he decides he wants to become an animagus too! if even uncle wormtail could do it there was no way he couldn’t, right? teachers were always telling him he was very bright!

james absolutely cannot keep it together when he gets a concerned letter from remus saying that harry has stopped talking and seems to not even want to open his mouth and it makes him feel dreadful because remus knows the first step for the transformation way too well, they had to repeat it at least twice back in his days just because the full moon was cloudy at the end of the month.

regulus reads the letter and just sits there in the kitchen with his head on the table as james excitedly summons a parchment and pen to start writing a lengthy list of tips. sirius apparates in the middle of the room approximately five minutes later looking like christmas, his birthday, harry’s birthday and his anniversary with remus had just come all at once. regulus groans “oh god why did i have a child with you. why is he your carbon copy. why is he your carbon copy. why”

I work in a vet clinic. I’m also an animal trainer. It’s physically painful for me to watch some of y’all with your pets.

Reminder that physically striking your animal as a means of of gaining compliance (no matter how gently) is ineffective and decreases trust between you and your animal.

turn the tables: imagine that a trainer did not speak your language. would you prefer to be trained to behave appropriately by positive reinforcement and encouragement, or scolding and being swatted at and having to guess what you did wrong? would you perhaps resent the person who was harsh towards you? even if you liked the affection and sustenance they gave you, would it erase your fear of being swatted or yelled at for stepping over arbitrary lines that you can’t see and don’t make sense to you?

build trust. be consistent and reliable. do not punish. do not correct with anger. be patient. expect mistakes and handle them gracefully. this works with both animals and humans.

In case anyone thinks chickens are too different than cats and dogs, I dared open crinkly food packaging while they were nearby again, and they all just lined up at the screen door staring at me, judging me, being horribly disappointed in me. They know their imitation crab meat is in a crinkly package, just like they know their corn is in a can, and their shrimp sometimes comes from the microwave, so if I dare use one of those things in their presence without them getting something, I just lose all kinds of favor with them.
