im gonna be honest. i love hero x villain ships, and i love angsty enemies to lovers. but i hate catradora
why?
because of that dumb fucking redemption. if it was just a funny lil "what if the hero and villain had a thing for each other" ship i would've loved it.
but trying to redeem an abuser, blame the victim and play the relationship off as healthy? fuck no, catra is to be held accountable for all of her actions and adora deserves better than her. catra is a horrible person and the show should treat her as such, instead of an "uwu gay disaster baby".
enemies to lovers shouldn't be a victim being emotionally scarred from an abuser, it should be enemies who are equal to each other. i would much rather ship catradora if catra hated everyone else just as much as she hates adora
if you ship catradora, fine. good for you, honestly. but don't hit me with the "its healthy" bs, or the "you don't know what enemies to lovers means". i do know what it means, i just don't like the abuser x victim sort

s5 and the trivialisation of catra's crimes
i couldn't be the only who noticed the language that s5 used whenever it came to talking about catra's actions.
(i probably missed a bunch of other instances, so feel free to reblog and add more!)
“hurt people” = huge understatement.
you also abuse them, try to control them, emotionally manipulate them, gaslight them, and attempt to murder them.
“for everything” = again, vague.
what's everything? we see later that catra still holds adora accountable for “abandoning her”, she still acts like adora is dumb and weak and easily manipulated, she still shows no remorse for the way she treated adora. what did she mean by everything then?
“tried to kill me a bunch of times” = only touching the surface.
she also physically and emotionally abused you, scarred you, kidnapped your friends, mind controlled you, kidnapped you, drugged you, and almost ended the entire universe just to spite you.
“stubborn brat” = huge understatement 2.0
she was acting like an abusive bitch person. stubborn brat makes it sound like catra is a pre-teen throwing a temper tantrum (which is exactly what she acts like, to her credit).
“i thought things would be different”, “fixing things” = vague terms + trivializing the situation.
adora is speaking as if the only problem here was a rough patch in a relationship or a bad breakup and not, you know, dealing with a literal war criminal and abuser.
“it's a long story” = vague and refusing to explain further.
said long story being that catra only sided with you because she had no choice and is still actively abusing you.
we're talking about a war criminal here. we're talking about someone who put the safety of the entire universe at jeopardy.
why is s5 using such vague terms and trivializing everything that catra did? why is it acting like the only problem with catra's character was that she had some relationship issues with adora?
oh wait, i know why. it's because the creators were hoping that we don't remember what happened in the previous seasons or sweep everything under the rug. and luckily for them, 90% of the fandom fell for it.

Me ranting about Catra and Catradora:
Catradora is not a toxic ship. They do not get together till they both figure out their issues. If anything they are a toxic codependent friendship, where they have obvious feelings for each other. But again they do not get together till they both work on their issues. Which hello character development and redemption. Emphasize on the both of them, because Adora has deep issues too that she needs to work on. Catra's issues are rooted in trauma and abuse, its not ok or and exuse for her actions (she goes through learning that the hard way). But its trauma response to that. And dealing with that is not pretty, it's a work in progress, you fail and go back to square one a lot.
What she did went through is basically the same as what Zuko did in Avatar the last Airbender. It's not an excuse on either of them. But everyone seems to hate on Catra more 🙄😒. I wonder why *sarcasm*. The whole point of this rant? Is me just wishing people would stop hating on catra and catradora. The story telling in shera especially where Catra is involved is brilliant and great story telling to me. An amazing redemption and story arc for female character. But what do I know thats just my opinion. I'm not telling people to not dislike Catra or the catradora ship. People are entitled to their opinions. I just wish people would stop calling it toxic. Because it's not.
(Don't like don't read. Post hate and I'll block you)

I think the difference between the "I can fix him" trope and the "love helps people change" trope is that the former implies effort on the lover's part, and the latter on the person needing to change and grow.
Because a character realizing they're going to lose someone/have lost someone they care about because of their bullshit and actually fixing themselves because that person means the world to them? Beautiful. Poetic cinema. Zero effort on the other person's part. Character shows up on their lover's/family member's/best friend's doorstep like "you deserve better and so I'm going to do everything I can so that you are happy and have your back even if it means I don't get to be with you because I don't expect anything from you" and the other one looks at them and the concrete actions they took to do that and goes "Okay. Maybe you can stay."

Redemption Arc Therapy Incorrect Quotes #361 (Catradora meets Bakudeku)
Adora: Sooo.... How long have you and Bakugo been dating?
Midoriya: Oh, three years!
Catra: Who's that? Does he always follow you two around?
Bakugo: That's our third-wheel.
Todoroki: Hello.

The fact that the characters of Season 5 She-Ra are handled so badly, it makes me hate the Season 5 poster even more.
The characters could have called Catra out for her actions, but no.
It's almost like a different show compared to Seasons 1 to 4.

you ever just walk around and suddenly remember that one character that you haven’t seriously thought about in a while and it’s like OH YEAH! I completely forgot you controlled my existence for a considerable amount of time! good god I adore you! into the deep end we go xoxo

it's crazy the way c//a stans compare the ship to other romantic ships in media and try to find similarities, when c//a is most similar to a bunch of sibling relationships i've seen in media.
let's see:
these are the duos that c//a remind me most of and they're all siblings, either blood-related or otherwise.
i haven't watched tangled the series but i know that rapunzel and cassandra are shipped by the fandom, despite both of them having the same mother (gothel being rapunzel's adoptive mother and cassandra's actual mother). not to mention, the feud between them is the same as most of the other relationships here - a desperate need for parental validation.
all of these duos have the same dynamic as c//a, with one person being the golden child (azula, rapunzel, claudia and vi) and the other one being the scapegoat (zuko, cassandra, soren and jinx/powder).
the conflict between the two siblings is usually based on the way they were raised and the competition for parental validation. (the only example where this is not exactly the case is with jinx and vi, since jinx doesn't seem to be bothered about being validated by vander, she's more troubled about the idea of being abandoned by vi. which is also eerily similar to the way catra feels about adora.) this is a very common sibling dynamic and it's really weird to apply it to a ship that's supposed to be romantic.
i can understand the idea of feeling inferior to a romantic partner, but in catra's case, she was very clearly bothered by the fact that their mother preferred adora over her. this does not bode well for any kind of romantic chemistry.
apart from the fact that catra and adora was specifically written as siblings, the VAs also describe them as sisters multiple times and the official character sheets say the same thing.
it's ridiculous to still think that they were always meant to be romantic partners when the truth is so obvious. i don't want to assume things about nate or anyone in the crew, but it's more than a bit suspicious and concerning that c//a is not the only example of an incestuous ship in spop.

You know how some Star Wars fans pretend episode 9 isn't real? I might start doing the same with spop season 5!

Why do you think people wants Sasha and Anne to be always fighting each other? Just this last week I saw: the fanon Sashanne is bad because Sasha isn't a bitch to Anne, Anne is mis characterized as a damsel in distress and being "small" in comparison to Sasha so her saving Anne is bad, that they are a bad written Catradora, that they would never work without Marcy in the relationship, that people always give them bad break ups and that Season 3B Sashanne is bad because they don't fight 🤷♀️
honestly I think it's just based off of two things I've seen in the fandom over and over: 1) they throw a fit when Marcy isn't involved and 2) people are dead set on this idea that Sasha is abusive. Sashanne is a very wonderful ship but it's also the most complex out of all the trio ships, so it... is not surprising that a lot of people just want to see it burn. you're talking abt a fandom that, like a lot of other cartoon fandoms, thinks primarily in black and white. ofc they're not going to want to see a friends to enemies to lovers arc, they're going to want it to stop at the enemies part. especially since Sasha never seemed to be truly remorseful about his actions until s2/s3; he was kind of just fucking shitty. which is. literally normal. sometimes you are just a shitty person before you get better. but to people who cannot understand nuance to save their lives, this means he is abusive and that he should always be a bitch to Anne or else it's out of character
